Animals found are nationally rare or endangered. 13 species of mammals are recorded for the Park and its vicinity although only 9 species have been sighted directly. Other factors that are contributing to ecotourism are beautiful landscapes, peaks, lakes and tarns etc. But now-a-days the problem of Solid waste is increasing at an alarming rate because of the heavy influx of tourists and improper management practices. 640 Epidemiology of Snakebites—Hock Heng Tan Original Article Epidemiology of Snakebites from A General Hospital in Singapore: A 5-year Retrospective Review (2004-2008) 1 Hock Heng Tan, MBBS, FRCS A&E (Edin), FAMS Abstract Introduction: This is a retrospective study on the epidemiology of snakebites that were presented to an emergency department (ED) between 2004 and 2008. Materials and Methods: Snakebite cases were identified from International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code E905 and E906, as well as cases referred for eye injury from snake spit and records of antivenom use. Results: Fifty-two cases were identified: 13 patients witnessed the snake biting or spitting at them, 22 patients had fang marks and/or clinical features of envenomations and a snake was seen and the remaining 17 patients did not see any snake but had fang marks suggestive of snakebite. Most of the patients were young (mean age 33) and male (83%). The three most commonly identified snakes were cobras (7), pythons (4) and vipers (3). One third of cases occurred during work. Half of the bites were on the upper limbs and about half were on the lower limbs. One patient was spat in the eye by a cobra. Most of the patients (83%) arrived at the ED within 4 hours of the bite. Pain and swelling were the most common presentations. There were no significant systemic effects reported. Two patients had infection and 5 patients had elevated creatine kinase (>600U/L). Two thirds of the patients were admitted. One patient received antivenom therapy and 5 patients had some form of surgical intervention, of which 2 had residual disability. -

We herein provide the first list of 42 species of amphibians and reptiles, in which, 12 species are newly recorded for the herpetofauna of Ha Noi City. In addition, morphological characters of these species are also provided. In terms of conservation concern, two species are listed in the IUCN Red List (2020), five species are listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book (2007), and two species are listed in the Governmental Decree No 06/2019/ND-CP. Oxybelis aeneus is a broadly distributed vine snake of the New World (Keiser, 1982; Savage, 2002). Its enormous range stretches from Arizona and southern Texas, through Mexico, Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and into South America where it is found in Colombia, Ecuador, north-western Peru on the Pacific ver- sant, and as far south as Brazil and Bolivia on the Atlantic versant (Keiser, 1974, 1982; Dixon and Soini, 1986; Keiser, 1991; Pérez-Santos and Moreno, 1991; Lehr et al., 2002; Savage, 2002; Hernandez, 2004; Uetz, 2006; Cisneros-Heredia and Touzet, 2007; AGFD, 2008). It is also found on Trinidad and Tobago and other islands such as offshore atolls around Belize (Campbell, 1998; Platt et al., 2002). O. aeneus is easily recognised from other Oxybelis sp. vine snakes by its light-grey dorsum and black mouth lining. It is a common colubrid snake within its range, inhabit- ing open areas, grassland with scrub, forest edges, clearings within forest, abandoned pas- tures, riparian premontane wet forest, premontane rain forest, in addition to lowland wet and dry forest (Franzen, 1996; Savage, 2002). -

ABBA1,2 1Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universiti Putra Malaysia, UPM Serdang, Selangor Darul Ehsan Malaysia 2Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Maiduguri, P.M.B 1069 Maiduguri, Borno State Nigeria SUMMARY An adult female Elephant Trunk Snake (Acrochordus javanicus) was reported to have been weak and inappetent for five days. The following morning the snake found dead, while in the process of shedding its skin. On post mortem examination, there were multiple circumscribed caseous nodules of various sizes distributed all over the liver, along the respiratory tract and on the lungs. Bacteriological analysis of the lungs and liver swab samples yielded Burkholderia pseudomallei, which was confirmed by PCR amplification of specific 16S rRNA. The condition was diagnosed as melioidosis and the organism was genotypically characterized as sequence type 51, a genotype that has been previously characterized in humans in Malaysia. Antibiotic susceptibility by both Disc diffusion or Kirby Bauer and E-test minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) showed that the organism exhibited susceptibility to meropenem, imipenem, ceftazidime, cotrimoxazole and co-amoxyclav; the antibiotics recommended in the treatment of melioidosis. They feature prominently in folklore, mythology and other belief systems of the indigenous people of the region, and are of ecological and conservation value, some species supporting significant (albeit often illegal) economic activities (primarily, the snake-skin trade, but also sale of meat and other body parts that purportedly have medicinal properties).
