Responsible for many bites in Asia is the widespread genus Trimeresurus. While bites lead to hae- Coagulopathy morrhage, only a few species have had their venoms examined in detail. We found that Trimeresurus venom Fibrinogen causes haemorrhaging by cleaving fibrinogen in a pseudo-procoagulation manner to produce weak, unstable, Antivenom short-lived fibrin clots ultimately resulting in an overall anticoagulant effect due to fibrinogen depletion. The Phylogeny monovalent antivenom ‘Thai Red Cross Green Pit Viper antivenin’, varied in efficacy ranging from excellent neutralisation of T. albolabris venom through to T. gumprechti and T. mcgregori being poorly neutralised and T. hageni being unrecognised by the antivenom. While the results showing excellent neutralisation of some non-T. albolabris venoms (such as T. flavomaculaturs, T. fucatus, and T. macrops) needs to be confirmed with in vivo tests, conversely the antivenom failure T. -

Rhabdophis tigrinus sequesters Bufadienolides from its toad prey and stores them in the nuchal glands as a defensive suBstance. Among more than 3400 species of snakes, only 18 Asian natricine species are known to have the nuchal glands. These 18 species Belong to three genera, Balanophis, Macropisthodon, and Rhabdophis. In Macropisthodon and Rhabdophis, however, species without the nuchal glands also exist. This evidence suggests multiple independent origin and/or secondarily loss of the nuchal glands. To infer the evolutionary history of the nuchal glands, we investigated the molecular phylogenetic relationships among Eurasian natricine species with and without the nuchal glands, Based on variations in partial sequences of the oocyte maturation factor Mos (c-mos) gene, the recomBination-activating gene 1 (Rag 1), and the mitochondrial cytochrome B (cyt.B) gene (total 2.6 kBp). -

Since its establishment in 2008, we have undertaken a range of projects that deal with conservation. Dakshin works with an understanding that challenges of conserving our environment is one that necessitates an active engagement between the natural and social sciences where conservationists accommodate expertise that transcends disciplinary boundaries. Dakshin’s applied scientific research aims at filling some of the critical gaps in our current knowledge of marine ecosystems. Through long-term monitoring of select ecosystems and taxa, our research aims to advance our understanding of the patterns and processes that maintain ecosystem function and resilience to anthropogenic stress and climate-induced changes. Introduction: Taxonomy and Distribution Sea snakes are venomous snakes that are specialised to inhabit marine ecosystems (Voris 1977; Heatwole 1999, Ineich and Laboute 2002) and have evolved independently from terrestrial snakes of family Elapidae (Voris 1977). Further taxonomic divisions have categorized sea snakes into two subfamilies: the oviparous sea kraits; Laticaudinae and the viviparous ‘true sea snakes’ Hydrophiinae (Lukoschek 2007). There are ~65 species of sea snakes reported from the modern oceans.
