Ossining MATTERS Education Foundation 10 th Annual 5K Run/2 Mile Walk! We hope you’ll join hundreds of Ossining MATTERS supporters, on September 8 th for our 10 th annual run/walk. HomeStay Announces Fifth Annual Visit of Yokohama Commercial High School to Westchester County HomeStay, an organization devoted to finding space in Westchester County for visiting companies and groups, today announced the fifth annual visit of Yokohama Commercial High School to Westchester County, on October 12-14, 2012. Japanese high school students from Yokohama Shogyo will be visiting as part of a program titled, “The World At Your Door!” organized by Ossining-based HomeStay. Thirty- eight foreign teenagers will stay with American hosts selected by the organization. HomeStay president, Beverly Harris, said “The program offers local families and their guests the unique chance to explore and appreciate each other’s culture and daily life. The visits are a lot of fun and produce lasting memories and friendships.” She went on to describe some of HomeStay’s previous exchanges including a visit by 26 young people from Sendai, near the Fukushima nuclear facility. HomeStay was asked to arrange host families for a two-week stay. The students took ESL classes at Pace University and created the NYC event, “3/11 Survivors,” about the earthquake and tsunami that struck them. Openings are available for hosts for future HomeStay visits. Hosting families can consist of a single adult, a couple, parents with kids or other combination. Some spaces may become available for this October as well. Schools and organizations can utilize the program as a fundraiser. Hudson Chorale Accepting New Members in September After a thrilling live performance of Paine’s Mass in D in May, Hudson Chorale is welcoming new members in preparation for its 2012-2013 season. Singers in all voice parts (SATB) are invited to join Westchester’s largest mixed-voice choral group for an exciting January 26, 2013 concert. It will feature an eclectic program for chorus and strings including Mozart’s Missa Brevis in D Minor and excerpts from Porgy and Bess , with a little Mendelssohn, Sondheim and Whitacre thrown in. The May 11, 2013 concert will be an all-Beethoven program with full orchestra featuring the Mass in C and other pieces. The chorus’ goal is to provide both audience members and singers with the best possible experience in choral singing, offering a repertoire that ranges from the great masterpieces to contemporary compositions. Singers looking for a new or additional choral family are encouraged to consider the Hudson Chorale. Michael Conley is the Music Director of the Hudson Chorale. Mr. Conley enjoys a multi-faceted career as a conductor, composer, pianist, organist and singer. In addition to serving as Music Director of the Hudson Chorale, Mr. Conley is the Music Director of the highly popular West Village Chorale and the Judson Memorial Church in Manhattan. On Sunday September 9 th , the 5 th annual Toughman Half Triathlon will take place in Croton. The event begins at Croton Point Park at 6:30 am with a 1.2 mile swim . The 56- mile bicycle course which begins at 7:15 am will be located on the Route 9/9A southbound lanes and the southbound lanes will be entirely closed to vehicular traffic from Annsville Circle to Briarcliff Manor from 5:30 am to 1 pm. Residents who wish to travel south should use the following detour: Route 129 east to Quaker Bridge Road, travel over the Quaker Bridge, continue south on Quaker Bridge Road south until it meets Albany Post Road, continue south to access Route 9 south in Ossining. The 13.1 mile run course which begins at 9:30 am will travel through Van Cortlandt Manor out to Route 129. The road will remain open, however, the lanes will be narrowed with cones and you may experience delays travelling on Route 129.Residents are encouraged to cheer the runners on as they travel to and from Croton and to head out to Croton Point Park to witness the finish. There will be shuttle bus service from the train station to the park between 5 am and 4 pm.

Ossining Village and Town 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony - A Salute to America’s Heroes The Village and Town of Ossining will hold a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Tuesday, September 11 th at 6:30 p.m. The Ceremony will be held at Engel Park on the waterfront adjacent to the Ossining Boat and Canoe Club. On the eleventh anniversary of that fateful day, the Ossining community is gathering to remember and recognize the sacrifices of those who lost their lives in the tragedy and also our local heroes who risk their lives everyday in the service to others. "The Chemistry of Food and Cooking," a Westchester Community College Mainstream course for senior citizens age 60 plus, is scheduled to begin on Friday, Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Ossining Senior Center, 95 Broadway, Ossining. Courage, resident of Valhalla N.Y., has been garnering national attention for a book he co-authored. Most recently, the Illinois State Historical Society announced that a Superior Achievement in Scholarly Publication award had been given to Richard’s book titled, “The Muse in Bronzeville: African American Creative Expression in Chicago, 1932-1950. “Of Gods and Men” is the September Feature at International Film Festival By Maryknoll Fathers And Brothers Of Gods and Men will be the first featured film for the 2012-2013 International Film Festival sponsored by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers . It will be shown Friday, September 21, 7:30 p.m. at the Maryknoll Mission Center, 55 Ryder Road in Ossining. Everyone is welcome and admission is free. Of Gods and Men is a 2011 French film from director Xavier Beauvois. The film is based on the true story of Trapist Monks who lived in harmony with their Muslim brothers in Algeria until the political situation turned lethal.

2012 Harvest Festival The Greater Ossining Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the 3rd Annual Harvest Festival which is scheduled for Saturday, October 27th . Bicentennial Cookbook Committee Seeking Recipes, Stories and Pictures for 2013 Commemorative Cookbook The Bicentennial Cookbook Committee is seeking your recipes, stories and pictures for the Ossining Bicentennial Celebration cookbook, “A Place at the Table”. We’re celebrating Ossining’s history, the food we make and the people we share it with . Please share special family favorite recipes along with their stories or pictures to be included in this special cookbook. We are seeking to include material from all the people who help to make Ossining special; our residents, our school faculty, businesses, houses of worship, organizations and institutions. The committee is also seeking volunteers who wish to contribute a few hours of their time or skills. If you are interested in volunteering, please email the address below. Also needed to produce the cookbook are in–kind donations, paper, printing, graphics, photos and financial donations (checks should be made out to Village of Ossining Bicentennial Cookbook – financial donations are tax deductible.) Proceeds from the cookbook will help subsidize our Bicentennial Celebration. Recipes, stories and pictures are being accepted between now and September 3, 2012. Taconic State Parkway Bridge Closure – Northbound over New Croton Reservoir Beginning Monday, March 26 th through Friday, November 9 th northbound traffic will be moved onto the southbound roadway and be reduced to two lanes in each direction. This shift will occur just north of Pines Bridge Road, continue for 3 ½ miles, then shift back just south of Underhill Avenue. The Reservoir bridge closure is necessary to perform extensive repairs.
