  • Forward Starting
[Type text] Forward Starting Hockey is a very fast game with many changes of directions. A game can be won or lost in fractions of a second. Players must master the ability to stop and start in order to adjust to the flow of the game. If a player cannot start out quickly, he /she will be behind the play and will not have success racing to loose pucks. During a game, a player will be confronted with the situation of having to start from a stationary position. This situation may happen during a face off alignment, confrontation in front of the net or getting up off the ice after receiving a good body check etc. To be effective a player does not require great speed but instead great quickness. This skating ability requires a player to reach top speed in only three or four strides. Players such as Paul Kariya, Joe Sakic and Pavel Bure have a great gift of being able to perform lighting quick starts. They are in full speed within two or three strides. By developing great quickness through proper starting techniques a player can lower the amount of time needed to reach his / her top speed. Explosive starts require quick choppy type strides which are followed by powerful, rapid and long leg drives. The ability to start effectively requires three skating components: Quickness – often we hear the term “quick feet”… to rapidly turn the legs over. Power – when skating the majority of a player’s power comes from his /her thighs i.e quads . It is a force exerted by the legs and body weight against the inside edges of the skates.

FOR MORE INFORMATION Mary Williams: 518.364-0668 Email: [email protected] Albany-Tula Alliance sponsors area youth hockey team to play in Russia Capital Region Sister-City Organization supports an opportunity of a lifetime for 14 local children April 4, 2018 – (Albany, NY) The Albany-Tula Alliance, a not-for-profit organization that promotes ties between Albany, N.Y. and Tula, Russia, is sponsoring a local team in an upcoming youth hockey tournament in Russia. The EuroChem Cup will take place May 25-30 in Novomoskovsk, a town of 130,000 in the Tula Region. This will be the first time in the EuroChem Cup’s history that a team from the United States will compete alongside youngsters from Belgium, Estonia, Fin- land, Germany, Lithuania, Switzerland and Russia. The team, dubbed the Albany Capitals, has 14 players committed to the event. The youngsters, ages 10-12, come from the Capital Region and Central New York, said head coach Brad Chartrand. Chartrand is a former NHL player who spent five seasons with the Los Angeles Kings. “This is an incredible opportunity for our kids to get out there, see the world, learn how others play hockey and potentially forge life-long friendships,” said the 43-year- old coach. “We also recognize the importance of visiting our sister city, Tula, and hope that we can have a Russian hockey team come here to the Albany area to visit New York and play hockey in the future as we build this partnership.” This will be Chartrand’s third trip to Russia: He first visited the country in 1997, while playing for the Canadian National Hockey Team.

Canucks’ Pettersson Wins Calder Memorial Trophy Vancouver Canucks center Elias Pettersson has won the Calder Memorial Trophy, awarded “to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League,” as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Pettersson was the overwhelming choice among the 171 voters, receiving 151 first-place votes and 1,650 points. Jordan Binnington of the St. Louis Blues (18 first-place votes, 1,072 points) and Rasmus Dahlin of the Buffalo Sabres (1 first-place vote, 661 points) finished second and third, respectively. Pettersson began his NHL career with a five-game point streak (5-3—8) and went on to lead all NHL rookies, and the Canucks team, in goals (28), assists (38) and points (66). He also doubled up as the NHL rookie and Vancouver leader in power-play goals (10) and game-winning goals (7). Pettersson’s 66 points set a Canucks rookie record, besting the previous mark set by Pavel Bure (34-26—60 in 1991-92). He tallied multiple five-point games (2-3—5 vs. COL on Nov. 2 and 1-4—5 at STL on Dec. 9), becoming just the sixth rookie of the expansion era to accomplish the feat. The second Canucks player in as many seasons to be voted a Calder finalist (Brock Boeser finished second in 2018), Pettersson is the first Vancouver winner of the Calder Trophy since Bure (1991-92).
