TABLE 1 GEOLOGIC FIELD-TRAINING OF NASA ASTRONAUTS BETWEEN JANUARY 1963 AND NOVEMBER 1972 The following is a year-by-year listing of the astronaut geologic field training trips planned and led by personnel from the U.S. Geological Survey’s Branches of Astrogeology and Surface Planetary Exploration, in collaboration with the Geology Group at the Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, Texas at the request of NASA between January 1963 and November 1972. Regional geologic experts from the U.S. Geological Survey and other governmental organizations and universities s also played vital roles in these exercises. [The early training (between 1963 and 1967) involved a rather large contingent of astronauts from NASA groups 1, 2, and 3. Among the nine astronaut trainees in Flagstaff for that initial astronaut geologic training exercise was Neil Armstrong--who would become the first man to step foot on the Moon during the historic Apollo 11 mission in July 1969! The other astronauts present included Frank Borman (Apollo 8), Charles "Pete" Conrad (Apollo 12), James Lovell (Apollo 8 and the near-tragic Apollo 13), James McDivitt, Elliot See (killed later in a plane crash), Thomas Stafford (Apollo 10), Edward White (later killed in the tragic Apollo 1 fire at Cape Canaveral), and John Young (Apollo 16). -

Kennedy May 25, 1961 Celebrate Apollo Exploring The Moon, Discovering Earth Less than five months into his new administration, on May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy, announced the dramatic and ambitious goal of sending an American safely to the moon before the end of the decade. Coming just three weeks after Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space, Kennedy’s bold challenge that historic spring day set the nation on a journey unparalleled in human history. Just eight years later, on July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong stepped out of the lunar module, taking “one small step” in the Sea of Tranquility, thus achieving “one giant leap for mankind,” and demonstrating to the world that the collective will of the nation was strong enough to overcome any obstacle. It was an achievement that would be repeated five other times between 1969 and 1972. By the time the Apollo 17 mission ended, 12 astronauts had explored the surface of the moon, and the collective contributions of hundreds of thousands of engineers, scientists, astronauts and employees of NASA served to inspire our nation and the world. -

They’re printed on a small length of photographic paper and glued to cardboard which leans against the base of my desk lamp. Everyday I look at them. When I travel, they come with me. I placed this card in the showcase. Two small astronaut figurines are examining the three images. These photographs are at the heart of three exhibitions which make up Lunar Cycle : Les Diapasons of Eva Lm (2012) ; The Rotations of Solitude (2013) and now: Faraway, in the Night Sky, Earth Shines upon Herself. (2017). They pay homage to the astronauts of the Apollo missions 11-12-14-15-16 and 17 and to all those who walked on the Moon from 1969 to 1972. In the beginning, this exhibition was to be called : The rendez-vous, Re-entry : names of the two operations vital for the return of the astronauts to Earth. Rendez-vous : the lunar module and her two astronauts (The Diapasons of Eva Lm) leave the Moon to join the command module orbitting around the Moon where the third astronaut awaits them (The rotations of solitude). -

NASA ASTRONAUT (FORMER) PERSONAL DATA: Born in Chicago, Illinois, March 17, 1936. One grown son. EDUCATION: Attended Florida elementary and secondary schools and is a graduate of Miami Edison High School, Miami, Florida; received a bachelor of science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Auburn University in 1958. ORGANIZATIONS: Associate Fellow, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics; Fellow, American Astronautical Society; and Member, Society of Experimental Test Pilots, and the U.S. Naval Institute. SPECIAL HONORS: Department of Defense Distinguished Service Medal (1982); NASA Distinguished Service Medals (2); JSC Certificate of Commendation (1970); JSC Group Achievement Award (1972); Navy Distinguished Service Medal; Navy Astronaut Wings; SETP Ivan C. In July 1963, he served in VAH-11 deployed aboard the USS FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT where he flew the A3B aircraft for two years. NASA EXPERIENCE: Mattingly is one of the 19 astronauts selected by NASA in April 1966. -

Toulouse School of Graduate Studies Johnson, Michael P. Skylab: The Human Side of a Scientific Mission. Master of Arts (History), May 2007, 115pp., 3 tables, references, 104 titles. This work attempts to focus on the human side of Skylab, America’s first space station, from 1973 to 1974. The thesis begins by showing some context for Skylab, especially in light of the Cold War and the “space race” between the United States and the Soviet Union. The development of the station, as well as the astronaut selection process, are traced from the beginnings of NASA. The focus then shifts to changes in NASA from the Apollo missions to Skylab, as well as training, before highlighting the three missions to the station. The work then attempts to show the significance of Skylab by focusing on the myriad of lessons that can be learned from it and applied to future programs. Copyright 2007 by Michael P. ORAL HISTORY TRANSCRIPT EDGAR D. MITCHELL INTERVIEWED BY SHEREE SCARBOROUGH HOUSTON, TEXAS – 3 SEPTEMBER 1997 The following interview of Dr. Edgar Mitchell was conducted in Houston, Texas, on September 3, 1997, by Sherre Scarborough and assisted by Paul Rollins. SCARBOROUGH: Maybe we could start with your actual training to become an astronaut and what made you decide to go into that program. MITCHELL: I made the decision in 1957, when Sputnik went up. I was on a carrier in the Pacific, just about to come back to the States for some test pilot work, and when Sputnik went up I realized humans were going to be right behind it, so I started orienting my career toward that at that time. SCARBOROUGH: That's amazing, that you had that vision. MITCHELL: As it turned out, I came back to the States in 1958 when the first selection was starting, and as it turned out, I was still too junior and didn't have enough flight time or jet time. So I set my cap toward amassing qualifications that I thought would be attractive to NASA in 1957. It took nine years, but I got a doctorate, got additional flight experience, additional jet hours, was assigned to the Manned Orbiting Laboratory Program for a while, so, getting space management experience. All of that went on for nine years till I was selected in 1966. Skylab II Beta Cloth Mission Patch, Autographed by Crew (Flown, Skylab II: This Skylab II Beta-cloth mission patch was personally carried by mission commander Alan Bean aboard the second manned mission to Skylab – America’s first space station. The patch was in space nearly 60 days, and made 858 orbits of the Earth between July – September, 1973. The patch has been signed by all three Skylab II crew members – Alan Bean, Jack Lousma and Owen Garriott. (Flown – Given to Ary by Bean just months after the mission; COA can be provided by Ary). 5. A total of nine astronauts, including one scientist each mission, flew aboard the orbital workshop. Since the Skylab missions contained major goals including science and research in the space environment, the majority of publications dealing with the subject focus on those aspects. This thesis intends to focus, rather, on the human elements of the three manned missions. By incorporating not only books, but also oral histories and interviews with the actual participants, this work contains a more holistic approach and viewpoint. Beginning with a brief history of the development of a space station, this document also follows the path of the nine astronauts to their acceptance into the program. Descriptions of the transition period for NASA from the Moon to a space station, a discussion on the main events of all the missions, and finally a look at the transition to the new space shuttle comprise a major part of the body. -
