Finally, I am delighted to thank Amir Shalmashi, whose love and support brings joy to my heart. i Abstract Paul Fussell’s The Great War and Modern Memory (1975) has long been the dominant cultural study of Great War Literature. Because Canadian literary critics, such as Evelyn Cobley and Dagmar Novak, rely on Fussell’s text as a model when they write about Great War texts, they either eliminate a variety of interesting texts, or severely distort and misread a narrow range of texts to make them fit Fussell’s ironic, anti-war ideology. This study aims to recuperate and reevaluate a number of Canadian Great War texts by examining a wider ideological range of texts than Fussell or his followers allow. In Death So Noble: Memory, Meaning, and the First World War (1997), cultural historian Jonathan Vance offers a viable antithesis to Fussell in his method and conclusions. This present study, focused on eight Canadian combatant narratives written between 1917-1939, develops and expands Vance’s argument from the vantage point of literary criticism. The first chapter examines four canonical European anti-war texts, delineating their characteristic features and ideological positions. Chapter 2 shows how the extreme ends of the spectrum of literary responses to the war in Canadian combatant writing distort the truth and are equally unsatisfying. Chapter 3 examines three Canadian narratives located in the middle ground between jingoistic romances and cynical anti-war texts, focusing on their social inclusivity and balance—features which allow for a more multifaceted representation of the Great War. But it is a Janus-faced poem that simultaneously looks two ways in a celebration of imperial pride, and in a stark warning against hubris by recalling the decline of other empires (with particular reference in line sixteen to “Nineveh and Tyre,” the capitals of two great empires that are no more). Though written seventeen years before the Great War began, the poem’s plea not to forget past sacrifices has long been linked in social rituals of remembrance with the Great War (1914-1918), as it continues to be cited in Remembrance Day observances, on war memorials, and in epitaphs for fallen soldiers. In this vein of social remembrance, one ought not to forget Laurence Binyon’s oft-cited poem, “For the Fallen,” first published by The Times

Modris Eksteins has described it as being “more a matter of art than of history;” Samuel Hynes calls it “a gap in history;” Paul Fussell has exclaimed “Oh what a literary war!” and placed it outside of the bounds of conventional history. The primary artistic mode through which the war continues to be encountered and remembered is that of literature—and yet the war is also a fact of history, an event, a happening. Because of this complex and often confounding mixture of history and literature, the joint roles of historiography and literary scholarship in understanding both the war and the literature it occasioned demand to be acknowledged. Novels, poems, and memoirs may be understood as engagements with and accounts of history as much as they may be understood as literary artifacts; the war and its culture have in turn generated an idiosyncratic poetics. It has conventionally been argued that the dawn of the war's modern literary scholarship and historiography can be traced back to the late 1960s and early 1970s—a period which the cultural historian Jay Winter has described as the “Vietnam Generation” of scholarship.

    Generic Experiment and Confusion in Early Canadian Novels of the Great War Colin Hill he Canadian novel changed dramatically in the years immediately following the Great War of 1914-18. In the 1920s and ’30s an innovative, modern, cosmopolitan, and multi-gen- ericT literary realism began to challenge and supersede the nineteenth- century romanticism that had loomed large in the national fiction at least since Confederation. Two formative literary magazines were found- ed shortly after the 1918 armistice: Canadian Bookman in 1919 and The Canadian Forum in 1920. Both publications printed articles and mani- festos that demanded a new realism capable of representing the modern and independent Canada that had emerged from the war. In these same years, Canadian writers from all regions began to produce modern-real- ist novels in various sub-genres, including prairie realism, urban realism, and social realism. These writers challenged the verbose and ornate styles of their predecessors with a language that was idiomatic and dir- ect. They sought narrative objectivism and impersonality in accordance with the documentary approach they brought to their representations of contemporary Canada. The most ambitious and creative modern realists experimented with literary form and reworked innovative and international modernist devices to express their interest in exploring and representing human psychology. By the end of the 1920s, some of the best examples of these multi-generic modern-realist works had been published, and a few of them are still read today: J.G. Sime’s Sister Woman (1919), Douglas Durkin’s The Magpie (1923), Frederick Philip Grove’s Settlers of the Marsh (1925), Martha Ostenso’s Wild Geese (1925), Morley Callaghan’s Strange Fugitive (1928), and Raymond Knister’s White Narcissus (1929).

    臺大文史哲學報 第七十二期 2010年05月 頁129~151 臺灣大學文學院 Genre, Narrative, and History in Timothy Findley’s The Wars Wang, Mei-chuen∗ Abstract Timothy Findley’s The Wars (1977) started to investigate the underlying ideological assumptions about the writing of history before the rise of the postmodern epistemological and ontological questioning about history. Its problematization of realist presumptions of historical representation has been analysed by commentators, but the way Findley engages in genre transgression in order to unsettle history’s claims to authenticity and objectivity has not received adequate critical attention. This essay is concerned with how he employs the biographic form for his protagonist’s story but juxtaposes it with a nameless researcher’s collection of information about him and investigation into related historical documents as a metafictional device to problematize the writing of biography and history as mimetic representation. The focus will be on the narrative strategies used to achieve genre transgression and blur the distinction between biography and history. First published as "Hiroshima: A Soldier's View," New Republic (August 1981) (Page 13) Many years ago in New York I saw on the side of a bus a whiskey ad I've remembered all this time. It's been for me a model of the short poem, and indeed I've come upon few short poems subsequently that exhibited more poetic talent. The ad consisted of two eleven-syllable lines of "verse," thus: In life, experience is the great teacher. In Scotch, Teacher's is the great experience. (Page 14) For present purposes we must jettison the second line (licking our lips, to be sure, as it disappears), leaving the first to register a principle whose banality suggests that it enshrines a most useful truth. I bring up the matter because, writing on the forty-second anniversary of the atom-bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I want to consider something suggested by the long debate about the ethics, if any, of that ghastly affair. Namely, the importance of experience, sheer, vulgar experience, in influencing, if not determining, one's views about that use of the atom bomb. The experience I'm talking about is having to come to grips, face to face, with an enemy who designs your death. The experience is common to those in the marines and the infantry and even the line navy, to those, in short, who fought the Second World War mindful always that their mission was, as they were repeatedly assured, "to close with the enemy and destroy him." Number of Boxes: 3 r.c. boxes, 1 small flat o.s. box, 1 document tube Contents/Scope: This collection contains notebooks, memorandums, Marine Corps records, and a portion of the original outline that formed the basis for With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa, Sledge’s memoir of his service in those campaigns during World War II. Many letters to Sledge commenting on With the Old Breed contain wartime reminiscences of soldiers who also served in the Pacific in World War II. The collection includes photographs including World War II era photos of his platoon, contemporary photographs of Peleliu and Okinawa, and photographs of veterans’ groups. It also contains articles by Sledge and other authors concerning World War II in the Pacific, clippings relating to the 50th anniversary of World War II, correspondence (including wartime correspondence), and artifacts. Biographical / Historical Sketch: Eugene B. Sledge was born November 4, 1923, in Mobile, Alabama, son of Edward S. and Mary Frank Sturdivant Sledge. He volunteered for the Marine Corps in 1942 during World War II, and after a brief stay in an officer training program at Georgia Tech, enlisted and fought with the Marine Corps in the Pacific theater of the war, participating in the battles of Peleliu and Okinawa in 1944 and 1945. He spent some time with the Marine Corps in Beijing, China after the war, before being discharged from service in 1946.
