Lesson Plan: Drama at the Van Cortlandt House Architect: Frederick Van Cortlandt Site: Van Cortlandt House, 1748-49 Curriculum Link: High School U.S. History Unit Two: A:3 Colonial experience: political rights and mercantile relationships A:4 The Revolutionary War Project Aim: Students study the architectural and historical site of the Van Cortlandt House, the oldest building in the Bronx, home of the prominent Van Cortlandt family, and strategic location for the Revolutionary War. Vocabulary: Georgian architecture: The classical architectural style current between 1720 and 1840, named after the four British monarchs named George. Georgian Architecture is characterized by its sense of proportion and balance. Georgian designs usually include one or more of the orders of architecture and other elements derived from ancient Rome or Greece. In the United States, this style became unpopular after the Revolution, due to its association with the colonial regime. Column: An upright post, bearing the load of the upper part of a building. It consists of a base, a shaft, and a capital. An engaged column is half a column, attached to a wall, and non-weight bearing. Pilasters: A rectangular engaged column, sometimes decorative, but at other times used to buttress a wall. Description: Oloff Stevense Van Cortlandt was a Dutch merchant who built his fortune through trade. His son, Jacobus Van Cortlandt began purchasing land in the Bronx in 1694, and gradually turned the family business into a wheat plantation with extensive milling operations. Jacobus’ son, Frederick, inherited the estate and commissioned the Van Cortlandt House in 1748. He chose for his house the English Georgian style of architecture, but added details that do not fit in with architectural conventions of the day. -

Robert Miller Gallery is pleased to announce Eighteen Stations, a special project by Patti Smith. Eighteen Stations revolves around the world of M Train, Smith’s bestselling book released in 2015. M Train chronicles, as Smith describes, “a roadmap to my life,” as told from the seats of the cafés and dwellings she has worked from globally. Reflecting the themes and sensibility of the book, Eighteen Stations is a meditation on the act of artistic creation. It features the artist’s illustrative photographs that accompany the book’s pages, along with works by Smith that speak to art and literature’s potential to offer hope and consolation. The artist will be reading from M Train at the Gallery throughout the run of the exhibition. Patti Smith (b. 1946) has been represented by Robert Miller Gallery since her joint debut with Robert Mapplethorpe, Film and Stills, opened at its 724 Fifth Avenue location in 1978. Recent solo exhibitions at the Gallery include Veil (2009) and A Pythagorean Traveler (2006). In 2014 Rockaway Artist Alliance and MoMA PS1 mounted Patti Smith: Resilience of the Dreamer at Fort Tilden, as part of a special project recognizing the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway Peninsula, where the artist has a home. Smith's work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions worldwide including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto (2013); Detroit Institute of Arts (2012); Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford (2011); Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporaine, Paris (2008); Haus der Kunst, Munich (2003); and The Andy Warhol Museum (2002). -

DUTCH INFLUENCES 12/12/2018 10:05 AM ARTICLES DUTCH INFLUENCES ON LAW AND GOVERNANCE IN NEW YORK *Albert Rosenblatt When we talk about Dutch influences on New York we might begin with a threshold question: What brought the Dutch here and how did those beginnings transform a wilderness into the greatest commercial center in the world? It began with spices and beaver skins. This is not about what kind of seasoning goes into a great soup, or about European wearing apparel. But spices and beaver hats are a good starting point when we consider how and why settlers came to New York—or more accurately—New Netherland and New Amsterdam.1 They came, about four hundred years ago, and it was the Dutch who brought European culture here.2 I would like to spend some time on these origins and their influence upon us in law and culture. In the 17th century, several European powers, among them England, Spain, and the Netherlands, were competing for commercial markets, including the far-east.3 From New York’s perspective, the pivotal event was Henry Hudson’s voyage, when he sailed from Holland on the Halve Maen, and eventually encountered the river that now bears his name.4 Hudson did not plan to come here.5 He was hired by the Dutch * Hon. Court in the Market: The ‘Business’ of a Princely Court in the Burgundian Netherlands, 1467-1503 Jun Hee Cho Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Jun Hee Cho All rights reserved ABSTRACT Court in the Market: The ‘Business’ of a Princely Court in the Burgundian Netherlands, 1467-1503 Jun Hee Cho This dissertation examines the relations between court and commerce in Europe at the onset of the modern era. Focusing on one of the most powerful princely courts of the period, the court of Charles the Bold, duke of Burgundy, which ruled over one of the most advanced economic regions in Europe, the greater Low Countries, it argues that the Burgundian court was, both in its institutional operations and its cultural aspirations, a commercial enterprise. Based primarily on fiscal accounts, corroborated with court correspondence, municipal records, official chronicles, and contemporary literary sources, this dissertation argues that the court was fully engaged in the commercial economy and furthermore that the culture of the court, in enacting the ideals of a largely imaginary feudal past, was also presenting the ideals of a commercial future. It uncovers courtiers who, despite their low rank yet because of their market expertise, were close to the duke and in charge of acquiring and maintaining the material goods that made possible the pageants and ceremonies so central to the self- representation of the Burgundian court. It exposes the wider network of court officials, urban merchants and artisans who, tied by marriage and business relationships, together produced and managed the ducal liveries, jewelries, tapestries and finances that realized the splendor of the court. -

1 Early Bensonhurst By Matthew Becker, Vaughn Titus and Katie Zaniewska Modern-day Bensonhurst is an urban and multiethnic neighborhood of New York City in southwest Brooklyn.1 It is the home of many immigrants, and their individual influence on the community continues to shape the neighborhood. Before Bensonhurst became the culturally diverse neighborhood it is today, it was a small suburb, famously called "Bensonhurst-by-the- Sea," that attracted many residents seeking an escape to a quiet life. Even before the quiet suburb, Bensonhurst was a Dutch farming town called New Utrecht – and before that, home to Native Americans. The Dutch had a lasting impact on this region, as seen by the community's attempts to preserve the name New Utrecht. The most notable examples are New Utrecht High School, New Utrecht Avenue and the famous Historic New Utrecht Reformed Church. Throughout its history, Bensonhurst has undergone many transformations, and yet the one thing that remains constant is that it has always been significantly impacted by the cultures of the different people who have lived there. The first residents were the Lenape Native Americans, specifically the Canarsie tribe. The Lenape were a peaceful tribe, and strongly believed that nature and geology played a crucial part of their culture. They resided in seasonal camps and primarily went fishing and clamming in the area that became New Utrecht.2 Because the Lenape were a seasonally nomadic tribe, it is difficult to piece together what exactly happened to them, since there are not many artifacts that 2 that remain. In fact, the earliest written accounts of the tribe were not from the Lenape themselves, but from the notes of European travelers. -
