In it, I study the hagiographies written about the royal female saints of Ely by the Flemish monk Goscelin of Saint-Bertin in the late eleventh century as a form of postcolonial literature and memory creation. Goscelin was a renowned writer of Anglo-Saxon saints’ lives. Through his hagiographies he not only created images of England’s Christian past that emphasized its pious, sophisticated rulers and close ties to the papacy, he engaged in political commentary and criticism. -

There the host of seaborne attackers appears to have moored their vessels near or at Northey Island whence they proceeded to meet the hur‑ riedly assembled forces of the English defenders. Their subsequent encounter turned out to be one of the most celebrated, best documented, and most fre‑ quently discussed battles fought in the British Isles during the Viking Age. Apart from the anonymous alliterative poem usually referred to as The Battle of Maldon,2 the dramatic events of 991 are recounted in a significant number of more or less dependable sources including, first and foremost, the roughly con‑ temporaneous Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and the 11th-century Vita sancti Oswaldi. Valuable, if not at all times dependable, reports of the said encounter might also be found in several later texts, such as John of Worcester’s Chronicon 1 The dating uncertainty springs from the discrepancies in three contemporary obits of the ealdorman Byrhtnoth produced in the monastic houses in Winchester, Ramsey (both of which have 11th August), and Ely (10th August). -

Saint Etheldreda Of
Æthelthryth Æthelthryth (or Æþelðryþe; about 636 – June 23, 679) is the name for the Anglo-Saxon saint known, particularly in a religious context, as Etheldreda or Audrey. She was an East Anglian princess, a Fenland and Northumbrian queen and Abbess of Ely. 1 Life Æthelthryth was probably born in Exning, near Newmarket in Suffolk. She was one of the four saintly daughters of Anna of East Anglia, all of whom eventually retired from secular life and founded abbeys. The kingdom of East Anglia (Early Saxon period) Æthelthryth made an early first marriage in around 652 to Tondberct, chief or prince of the South Gyrwe. She managed to persuade her husband to respect her vow of 2 Legacy perpetual virginity that she had made prior to their mar- riage. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Winchester Research Repository Chapter 26 Ely Cathedral and the Afterlife of Ealdorman Byrhtnoth Katherine Weikert In 1154, seven Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian men were translated to the new Norman cathedral at Ely (Cambs.) and reburied together in a single monu- ment in the north transept of the cathedral.1 One of these men was the Ealdor- man Byrhtnoth. Byrhtnoth is of course a well-known figure in late Anglo-Saxon England with a relatively rich documentary record for the period. He witnessed a number of charters through a long career in the reigns of Æthelred, Edgar, Edward, Eadwig and Eadred,2 and was named in the wills of his father-in-law, Ealdorman Ælfgar, and sister-in-law, Æthelflæd.3 He gained a reputation as a virtuous man and spoke in defence of monks who would have been expelled in favour of secular clergy during the ‘anti-monastic’ reaction following the death of King Edgar in 975.4 He predeceased his wife Ælfflæd and so is not men- tioned in her will, but there are numerous notices of their joint gifts as well as the gifts of their extended family in Liber Eliensis (ii.62–64). His death is re- corded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as well as Liber Eliensis, and in more he- roic form in the Vita Oswaldi as well as in the well-known poem “The Battle of Maldon.”5 This text has been used more than any other in medieval and mod- ern times to reconstruct the persona of this famous and heroic man. -

Signed: Date: 2 Abstract This thesis documents the cult of St Æthelwold, a tenth-century bishop of Winchester, from its inception (c. 984) until the late Middle Ages. During his life, Æthelwold was an authoritative figure who reformed monasteries in southern England. Those communities subsequently venerated him as a saint and this thesis examines his cult at those centres. In particular, it studies how his cult enabled monasteries to forge their identities and to protect their rights from avaricious bishops. It analyses the changing levels of veneration accorded to Æthelwold over a five hundred year period and compares this with other well-known saints’ cults. It uses diverse evidence from hagiographies, chronicles, chartularies, poems, church dedications, wall paintings, and architecture. Very few studies have attempted to chart the development of an early English saint's cult over such a long time period, and my multidisciplinary approach, using history, art, and literary studies, offers insight into the changing role of native saints in the English church and society over the course of the Middle Ages. -

Arranged chronologically and divided into five distinct periods, the thesis demonstrates that this symbiotic relationship was key in maintaining and elongating the life of the cult. Employing digital humanities tools to analyse textual, archaeological, material, cartographic, and documentary sources covering the cult’s eight-hundred-year history, the study charts its development firstly within East Anglia, and subsequently across the whole country, and internationally. -

Mª Victoria Casado Varela Tutora: Tamara Pérez Fernández 2014-2015 ABSTRACT Saint Æthelthryth of Ely (c. 630-679) was one of the most popular saints in Anglo-Saxon England. She experienced a wide range of vital circumstances as a woman, thus providing us with an extraordinary opportunity to study the different roles reserved for Anglo-Saxon women such as those of virgin, wife, queen and abbess. This dissertation provides, in the first place, a general overview of several of the most relevant Anglo-Saxon female roles. Secondly, this dissertation explores how her figure is portrayed in several representative medieval texts, and whether Saint Æthelthryth submited or challenged social expectations in terms of the aforementioned roles. Afterwards, a comparative analysis of Saint Æthelthryth’s portrayals in all those texts is provided. This comparison allows us to conclude whether there were any changes in the depiction of the saint’s figure throughout the centuries and to see the causes underlying that shift. HISTORICAL IMPLICATIONS OF THE REGIONAL PRODUCTION OF DIES UNDER ^THELRED II1 PAULINE STAFFORD THE study of Anglo-Saxon numismatics has advanced considerably over the past two decades, and the picture which is emerging, although not yet definitive, must interest historians. An interim marriage between the historical and numismatic evidence, especially for the reign of jEthelred II, reveals the connections which existed between the coinage and political factors. Certain political developments during this reign had repercussions on the coinage, and the advancing study of regional die- production has sometimes made it possible to link specific changes in the circum- stances of local rule with changes in the coinage. England in the tenth and eleventh centuries was not a centralized state. The effectiveness of royal government depended on relations between the king and those who ruled in his name, the ealdormen, bishops, and reeves. In certain areas such as northern England the problems of government were almost always acute. The politics of late Anglo-Saxon England are dominated by such problems and relationships, and inevitably they varied with the position, power, and loyalty of individual nobles as well as with the king's own ability and situation. The heyday of King Edgar's power in the 970s, for example, differs significantly from the early stages of ^Ethelred's reign during the 980s, when a new and youthful king was establishing himself on the throne, and from the last years of that same reign when the English kingdom was facing sustained external attack of an unprecedented ferocity. It is not surprising to find that the coinage reflects such changes. -

Changing images of medieval women saints from St. Æthelthryth to Margery Kempe of Lynn ▪ 135 Changing images of medieval women saints from St. Æthelthryth to Margery Kempe of Lynn Sono MORISHITA On 18th December 2015, the media reported that Pope Francis recognized a second miracle attributed to Mother Teresa and it cleared the way for her to be a saint.1) And according to the Vatican Radio, Pope Francis will sign the decree for her canonization on March 15.2) On March 15, USA Today reported that Mother Teresa will become a saint on Sept. 4.3) Even before her death, she is a ‘living saint’ to millions of people for her unconditional love for the poor, the diseased, and the dying people. Mother Teresa is a de facto saint, however, it is essential to follow a procedure such as investigating her life, her writings and behavior by church authorities and being proved posthumously miracles. Woodward pointed out that “only Roman Catholic Church has a formal, continuous, and highly rationalized process for making saints.” He compares canonization to the Nobel Prize, because why and how candidates are chosen is not clear, however, after making the decision, their names are memorized as great people.4) The beginning of canonization by Pope is 993, and church did not have a formal process of making saints before 1234. Camden, Cotton and the Chronicles of the Norman Conquest of England
CAMDEN, COTTON AND THE CHRONICLES OF THE NORMAN CONQUEST OF ENGLAND ELISABETH M. C. VAN HOUTS The collaboration between William Camden (1551-1623), the Clarenceux King of Arms, and his pupil Sir Robert Cotton (1571-1631) in antiquarian studies is well known.^ Whereas Camden developed the principles on which the study of history should be based. Cotton provided the raw material by gathering together what, judged by quality rather than quantity, was the most important collection of medieval manuscripts owned by a single person. The range of his collection of medieval chronicles was unrivalled in Western Europe and his generosity towards scholars enabled them to borrow his manuscripts in order to print their texts and make them available to a larger public. In some cases these early editions are now our only witnesses for texts of which no manuscripts any longer survive.^ In this article I shall discuss the contributions made by Camden and Cotton to the process of editing and publishing the chronicles of the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. By 1586, when William Camden, Robert Cotton and others had founded the Elizabethan Society of Antiquaries, only medieval chronicles relating to the Anglo-Saxon past of England had been published, such as Gildas's De Excidto (1525), Bede's Historia Ecclesiastica (1565), Asserts Life of Alfred (1574) and Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae {1508, 1517), or general works on English history, like the Brut and Polychromcon (1480), John Hardyng's Chronicle (1543), and the collection published -
