A complete listing of scholarships and grants

Introduction

This scholarship handbook contains brief descriptions of the criteria currently employed by the various foundations and endowments that provide scholarships and research grants. Persons wishing to obtain additional information should consult the separate scholarship documents held at the Uppsala University scholarship office and the various student nations. Those documents include deeds of gift, wills and testaments, regulations, etc. Parenthetical information about the year in which a given donation was made to the University is included in the Scholarship Hand- book, which may be purchased in printed form at the scholarship office or obtained from the website of the Uppsala Academic Trust at www.uaf.se. The web-based version is to be regarded as an original and will be updated annually.

Applications may be submitted for scholarships and research grants with regard to which notice of current availability has been made by the scholarship office or the relevant faculty, which no- tice would normally be made at the beginning of the autumn or spring term of the year in ques- tion. An asterisk (*) appears in the Scholarship Handbook after the name of any foundation pro- viding scholarships or research grants for which notice of availability is also made at any other university or institution of higher learning. Unless otherwise specified, application is only open to students/researchers at Uppsala University. Additional information about currently available scholarships, application processes, prerequisites, application forms and so on is available at the Uppsala University website at www.uu.se/Student as well as at the Uppsala Academic Trust’s website at www.uaf.se.

Barring contrary provision, arrangements with regard to scholarship matters will be handled by the scholarship office and awards will be made by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recom- mendations by the scholarship board, which at present consists of 19 members, ten of whom are appointed by the Vice-Chancellor and nine of whom (one for each faculty) are appointed by the Student Union’s Board. The head of the scholarship office is responsible for reporting to the scholarship board.

Letters patent dated 1 November 1935 provided for scholarships on the basis of donations made prior to 3 June 1870 to be awarded to female applicants even where the donor specified or sug- gested that male applicants were intended. Letters patent dated 11 November 1966 provided for scholarships on the basis of donations made prior to 17 October 1958 and originally intended for male theology students to be awarded to female theology students as well.

Scholarships

Acrel, af (1784) Scholarships are provided, in the first instance and without regard to student-association membership or subject matter of study, for students born in Roslagen and, in the second instance, in the absence of such applicants, for students born in Uppland who are members of the Upland student nation. Two scholar- ships are provided: one for a student of medicine, with preference enjoyed by any dedicated to specialist study within the field of surgery and whose application evidence upper-secondary-school accomplish- ments in French, German, Latin or Greek; and the other, in the first instance, for a student of philology and Asian languages and, in the second instance, for a student within the Faculty of Science and Technol- ogy, with a preference, in either event, for any whose application evidences upper-secondary-school ac- complishments in French, German, Latin or Greek. The holder of the scholarship for a student of medi- cine may, upon special application, retain the award in connection with surgical studies in England, France or Switzerland, and the holder of the scholarship for a student of the arts and sciences may retain the award in connection with study abroad. The scholarships are awarded by the inspector of the Upland student nation and may be held for six years.

Adlersparre (1823) Scholarships are provided for needy, dedicated students who were born Jämtland or Härjedalen, belong to the Norrland student nation and completed the natural sciences curriculum at an upper secondary school in the Diocese of Härnösand or the Diocese of Luleå. Applicants shall, in addition to the aforementioned upper-secondary-school qualifications, preferably evidence knowledge of botany. The inspector and first curator of the Norrland student nation recommend three applicants, whereupon the Vice-Chancellor appoints scholarship holders. The scholarships may be held for two years and extended for an additional year.

Ahlberg, J (1913) Scholarships are provided for talented, dedicated, needy male students: one scholarship for a student within the Faculty of Science and Technology and another that alternates between the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Languages. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recom- mendations from the faculties in question and may be held for two years, with extension by two years being possible.

Ahlberg, Karl (1912) Scholarships for students at the Faculty of Pharmacy who are studying or have studied towards master’s degrees in pharmacy and have demonstrated decided talent for social or galenical pharmacy are awarded annually, independently of any application process, by the Faculty of Pharmacy on the basis of recom- mendations from representatives of the fields in question.

Ahlberger (1893) Scholarships are provided for students of theology who are preparing to enter the service of the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church. Graduates of upper secondary schools in Nyköping and Gothenburg hold the scholarships by turns. The Faculty of Theology awards the scholarships, which may be held for at most three years.

Ahlqvist foundation for education (1941) Funds are provided to defray costs associated with, on the one hand, inviting foreign scientists to dissemi- nate knowledge by lecturing for specific periods of time, etc., at the Faculty of Pharmacy and, on the other hand, study on the part of teachers at the faculty of specialised fields of knowledge at institutions of higher learning in foreign countries. Awards are made by the Board of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy.

3 Ahlöf (1740) Scholarships are provided for needy, dedicated students belonging to the Västmanland-Dala student na- tion. The student nation’s senior council recommends three ranked applicants, whereupon the Vice- Chancellor appoints scholarship holders. The scholarships may be held for up to six years.

Alreik I (1863) Scholarships are provided for dedicated students belonging to the Östgöta student nation and born in Östergötland, with the following enjoying preference: 1. applicants not of noble birth; 2. “sons of the working class or country folk”; 3. “sons of public servants”; and 4. “sons of priests and schoolteachers.” Pursuant to royal decree, the scholarships may now be awarded to female students as well. Without regard to their places of birth or student nation membership, the sons and daughters of civil servants employed within the national land survey staff enjoy preference. Preference is also enjoyed by students pursuing studies in the arts and sciences, provided, however, that no scholarship may be awarded to an applicant who has completed a bachelor’s degree. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the inspector and senior members of the Östgöta student nation and may be held for three years, with extension by one year being possible, even in cases where scholarship holders have completed bachelor’s degrees since receiving scholarships.

Alrutz (1927) Support is provided for research within psychology, including all of the specialties of the field within which research is pursued at Uppsala University. Awards are made every third year by the Faculty of So- cial Sciences on the basis of recommendations from a specially appointed committee.

Alsterblad (1870) A scholarship is provided for a student from Värmland. Preference is enjoyed by relatives. The inspector of the Värmland student nation recommends three applicants, whereupon the Vice-Chancellor appoints the scholarship holder. The scholarship may be held for three years or, where the holder is a relative, for his or her entire period of study.

Altin (1877) A scholarship for a student of medicine is awarded each year by the Faculty of Medicine.

Anderson, Fred (1941) A scholarship is provided to support study at a foreign university by a researcher who has recently com- pleted a in chemistry.

4 Anderson, Selma (1908)* One or more scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor at Uppsala University as follows: 1) to support scholarly/scientific research, academic travel or the publication of scholarly/scientific work by women who have completed at any of the country’s universities and other institutions of higher learning and thereby demonstrated genuine talent for scholarship/science; and 2) to support disser- tation work by women who have been accepted to postgraduate programmes at any of the country’s insti- tutions of higher learning and shown genuine talent for scholarship/science. Barring applicants meeting the above criteria, scholarships may be awarded to women who, on especially high recommendations, have been awarded degrees at Uppsala University and been accepted to postgraduate programmes. Some account may be taken of applicants’ financial condition in choosing scholarship holders. The same person may receive a scholarship for at most two years, provided, however, that extensions of one year are allow- able in cases where continued support is especially warranted.

Andersson of Taflebord (1882)* Scholarships are provided for dedicated, needy students at Uppsala University and the University of Gothenburg who were born on the island of Orust or have parents living there, with preference enjoyed by applicants from the parish of Tegneby. Among applicants of equal merit, preference is enjoyed by stu- dents at Uppsala University. The inspector of the Gothenburg student nation recommends three appli- cants, whereupon the Vice-Chancellor appoints the scholarship holders. The scholarships may be held for two years and extended for a maximum of three years.

Andersson, Sophia von (1926) A scholarship is provided, in the first instance, to cover the entire period of study of a student at Uppsala University who is a male descendant of council of war member I.D. Thim or royal secretary J.F. Ceder- blad. In the absence of any applicant claiming such kinship, the scholarship may be awarded for one year to a student who, having completed a university or equivalent degree, undertakes independent schol- arly/scientific work. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor.

Andrén (1873) Scholarships are provided for such postgraduate students belonging to the Gothenburg student nation as represent, in view of their exceptional intelligence, dedication to work and good conduct, the surest pros- pects for future benefit to scholarship/science and the country. The giving of notice is the responsibility of the nation’s first curator, and awards are made by the nation’s inspector on the basis of recommenda- tions from the senior council. The scholarships may be held for as long as the inspector determines them to be deserved.

Andrén-Lüning (1862) Scholarships for needy, talented students of theology from the are awarded by the Fac- ulty of Theology and may be held for two or three years.

Ankarstrand, H and G (1937) Scholarships for postgraduate students at the Faculty of Medicine who are engaged in research/research- associated education related to investigation/prevention of the onset of disease are awarded by the post- graduate programmes committee of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Appeltoft (1936) A scholarship is provided for a dedicated student belonging to the Kalmar student nation and hailing, in the first instance, from the city of Kalmar or, in the second instance, from the rest of Kalmar County. The scholarship holder is appointed for one year at a time by the nation’s inspector, first curator and a repre- sentative elected by the nation’s members, and the scholarship may be held for a maximum total of six years.

5 Arnberg prize (1900) Prizes are awarded to one freshman and one junior member of the Östgöta student nation who on the basis of dedication and good conduct are deemed deserving and who are in need of support. The nation’s senior council recommends three students for each award by the time of the autumn term’s second regular “landskap” meeting, whereupon the freshman and junior members elect their respective prizewinners.

Bahr, von (1901) A scholarship is awarded annually, independently of any application process, by the Faculty of Law to a person who completed a noteworthy dissertation at the faculty during the previous academic year. Mem- bers of the Småland student nation enjoy preference. In the event that no dissertation was completed, the scholarship is awarded to a distinguished, needy law student belonging to the Småland student nation.

Banér (1652) Scholarships are provided for accomplished, needy students of theology who are citizens of Sweden and members of the . The scholarship holders are appointed on the basis of recommenda- tions from the Faculty of Theology and the Vice-Chancellor by the leading representative of the Banér family, and the scholarships may be held for three years, with extension being possible.

Bergensson (1797) A scholarship is provided for a dedicated student from Medelpad or, barring such an applicant, some other member of the Norrland student nation. Relatives enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship committee, which recommendations shall be approved by the inspector, and may be held for three years and extended for two years.

Berggren, Christina (1875) A scholarship is provided a needy student of theology preparing to serve within the Church of Sweden. Students belonging to the Värmland student nation enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded annually, independently of any application process, by the Faculty of Theology and may be held by the same person for two or at most three years.

Berggren, P G (1865) Scholarships are provided for dedicated students without means who belong to the Värmland student nation, in the first instance for any intending to enter the priesthood of the Church of Sweden upon com- pletion of their studies. The scholarship holders are appointed each year by the nation’s scholarship com- mittee.

Bergh, Gunnar (1990) A scholarship is provided for a younger student of biology (especially within botany and zoology) who has not been accepted to a postgraduate programme, in the first instance for academic travel and in the sec- ond instance for literature or equipment related to special research. The scholarship is awarded annually by a committee appointed by the board of Naturvetenskapliga Studentsällskapet (the natural science stu- dents’ society) in Uppsala.

Bergh, Ingegerd (1958)* Grants for researchers who have defended dissertations in physics, chemistry or biochemistry are awarded for three budgetary years, without any reapplication required, are awarded by the Faculty of Science and Technology at Uppsala University on the basis of recommendations from subject representatives.

Bergholm (1850) A scholarship is provided for a student without means who belongs to the Södermanland-Nerike student nation and completed upper secondary school in Nyköping. Among those of equal merit, any born in the city of Nyköping enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded by the nation’s inspector and may be held for three years.

6 Bergius (1844) A scholarship is provided for a student belonging to the Värmland student nation. Relatives, especially any whose merit is well-testified and whose need is exceptional, enjoy preference. The scholarship may be held for four years and extended for two years in the event that no other relative applies. Barring application by any relative, the scholarship is awarded for one year at a time to some other student belonging to the Värmland student nation. The award is made by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship committee.

Berglund (1876) Scholarships are provided, in the first instance, for relatives of the donor, senior enforcement officer C.W. Berglund, without regard to student nation membership, and otherwise for needy students belonging to the Östgöta student nation and born within those regions of Kalmar County and Jönköping County that belong to the Diocese of Linköping. In the absence of such applicants, scholarships are awarded to stu- dents belonging to the Östgöta student nation without regard to place of birth. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector and may be held for three years and extended by at most two.

Bergmark travel scholarships (1931) Scholarships for travel within or without Sweden in connection with studies of a practical or theoretical nature within internal medicine are awarded every other year by the Faculty of Medicine on the basis of recommendations from the inspector for the scholarship, who shall be the prefect for the Department of Medical Sciences. The scholarships are tied to Uppsala University.

Bergstedt prize (1827) A prize is awarded without any application process at the end of each year, alternatingly by the Faculty of Languages to a person who demonstrates genius and makes exceptional progress within the field of Greek profane literature and by the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala to a person who distinguishes him- or herself in chemistry, experimental physics or geology.

Bergström, E and C (1907) Scholarships are provided for needy students, with preference enjoyed by any bearing the Bergström fam- ily name and related to estate inspector Ejnar Oliver Bergström or bearing the Kraft family name and related to the donor, the estate inspector’s widow, Carolina Bergström. Applicants able to substantiate claims to kinship who are studying at any of the country’s universities and other institutions of higher learning shall be eligible. In the event that multiple relatives concurrently apply, the Vice-Chancellor ap- points the scholarship holders. In the absence of any applicant claiming kinship, scholarships are awarded to needy students at Uppsala University. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for three years, with extension by at most three years being possible.

Bergström, J (1830) A scholarship for a student born in the western region in “the county of Falu or Stora Koppar- berg” is awarded annually by the Vice-Chancellor.

Bergwall (1882) A scholarship is provided for a promising student without means who belongs to the Gotland student nation, preferably a needy student of theology. The nation recommends three applicants, whereupon the nation’s inspector appoints the scholarship holder. The scholarship may be held for three years.

Berzins, Andrejs (1973)* Scholarships are provided for Swedish and foreign researchers at any of the Universities and other institu- tions of higher learning in Sweden, to promote historical research and written documentation of the na- tional life of the Latvian people prior to the close of the 13th century and during the period from 1914 to 21 June 1940. Applicants of Latvian descent enjoy preference. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice- Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from Lettiska Nationella fonden (the Latvian national fund) and the Centre for Baltic Studies at Stockholm University.

7 Beskow, von (1864) Scholarships for needy, promising students belonging to the Södermanland-Nerike student nation are awarded by the nation’s scholarship committee, which also determines the periods for which the scholar- ships are to be held.

Bielke, for studies in political science (1629) Scholarships are provided to cover the cost of “room and board for Swedish and Finnish students” of political science. Catharina Bielke’s oldest descendent on the male line or “closest kinsman” appoints the scholarship holders on the basis of recommendations from the Vice-Chancellor. The scholarships may be held for six years.

Bielke, for studies in theology (1629) Scholarships are provided to cover the cost of “room and board for Swedish and Finnish students” of theology. Countess Catharina Bielke’s oldest descendent on the male line or “closest kinsman” appoints the scholarship holders on the basis of recommendations from the Vice-Chancellor. The scholarships may be held for six years.

Bjurzon (1880) Scholarships are provided for needy students under the age of 25 who have been registered at Uppsala University and as members of the Värmland student nation for at least one term. The nation’s inspector and scholarship committee submits recommendations to the Vice-Chancellor, who appoints the scholar- ship holders. The scholarships may be held for four years.

Bjurzon prize (1880) Prizes are awarded for exceptional dissertations within the natural sciences written by students and young academic educators. Awards are made annually, independently of any application process, by the Vice- Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the board of the Faculty of Science and Technology.

Bjurzon travel scholarships (1880) Scholarships are provided to cover costs of student travel within Sweden in connection with study of natural history. The scholarships are awarded annually by the Vice-Chancellor in accordance with recom- mendations from the Board of the Faculty of Science.

Bjärka-Säby (estate owner O Ekman’s donation) (1936)* Scholarships are provided for researchers, preferably students, as follows: one to support investigation of the flora at Bjärka-Säby in Östergötland and another to support investigation, in the first instance, of Bjärka-Säby Västerskog forest and, in the second instance, of the natural history of the forests at Bjärka- Säby more generally.

Björck (1880) A scholarship is provided for a needy student belonging to the Upland student nation. The scholarship holder is appointed by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholar- ship committee. The scholarship may be held for three years.

8 Björn (1915) A scholarship for a talented, dedicated, needy student belonging to the Stockholm student nation is awarded annually by the nation’s scholarship committee. The scholarship may be split between two appli- cants. No person may hold the scholarship for more than three years.

Björnstjerna (1900) A scholarship for a needy student of theology who has distinguished him- or herself through knowledge and dedication is awarded annually by the Faculty of Theology and independently of any application proc- ess.

Björnståhl (1778) A scholarship is provided for a needy student belonging to the Södermanland-Nerike student nation and devoted to the study of Semitic languages. Children of non-commissioned officers from Södermanland enjoy preference, as do those of officers from the same province whose ranks correspond to any of the army ranks of second lieutenant, lieutenant and captain. The Faculty of Languages submits recommenda- tions, on the basis of which the professor of Semitic languages appoints the scholarship holder. The scholarship may under certain circumstances be held for seven or at most eight years.

Blomquist, Z and O R (1901) Scholarships are provided for students truly lacking means and belonging to the Gästrike-Hälsinge student nation who preferably possess aptitude for mathematical or linguistic studies. The nation’s scholarship committee recommends three applicants, whereupon the nation’s inspector appoints scholarship holders. The scholarships may be held for three years.

Boberg (1830) Scholarships are provided for needy students belonging to the Upland student nation who have demon- strated dedication and progress in connection with study. Scholarship holders are appointed by the inspec- tor, two curators and three of the most senior members of the nation. The scholarships may be held for five years, with extension by one year being possible.

Boman-Blixén (1863) One scholarship is provided in the first instance for a relative and in the second instance for a student of medicine; another is provided for a student auspiciously dedicated to the study of diseases of the eye. The Vice-Chancellor awards any scholarship where the scholarship holder is a relative, in which case it may be held for six years; a relative may concurrently receive both of the scholarships provided for by the founda- tion. The Faculty of Medicine awards any scholarship for a student of medicine for one year at a time.

Borgström, Marcus (1947)* Support is provided for genetic research, especially pertaining to human genetics, in the first instance to Swedish researchers for research within or without Sweden and in the second instance to foreign re- searchers for research in Sweden. Salaried employment does not constitute a hindrance to receiving sup- port. The same person may receive support from the fund on a number of occasions. Awards are made by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from a special committee.

Boström (1898) A scholarship for a genuinely needy member of the Norrland student nation who has successfully devoted him- or herself to the study of the arts and humanities is awarded annually by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship committee, which recommendations shall be approved by the inspector.

Braconier (1855) A scholarship for a talented, dedicated, needy student belonging to the Stockholm student nation is awarded by the nation’s scholarship committee and may be held for two years, with extension by one year being possible.

9 Brandel (1900) Scholarships are provided for students belonging to the Södermanland-Nerike student nation, with prefer- ence enjoyed by relatives. The nation’s inspector appoints scholarship holders on the basis of recommen- dations from the nation’s scholarship board. The scholarships may be held for three years.

Brattström (1917) Scholarships for needy students belonging to the Värmland student nation are awarded annually by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship committee.

Bredman (1855) Scholarships for talented, needy students belonging to the Norrland student nation who have attained 20 years of age and were born in the Diocese of Härnösand or the Diocese of Luleå are awarded by the Vice- Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship committee, which recommen- dations shall be approved by the inspector, and may be held for three years, with extension by at most two years being possible.

Brink (1901) A scholarship is provided for a dedicated, orderly member of the Värmland student nation. Relatives en- joy preference. The scholarship is awarded annually by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommenda- tions from the nation’s scholarship committee.

Broman, Sven (1938) A scholarship is provided for a dedicated student without means who belongs to the Stockholm student nation. Applicants who earned diplomas (or the equivalent) from Nya Elementarskolan in Stockholm and especially any who pursued the classics curriculum enjoy preference. The scholarship is intended for a student of law, preferably one aiming to become a judge, or a student of the humanities (classical lan- guages, history, modern languages, literary history and geography). The scholarship holder is appointed by the scholarship committee of the Stockholm student nation.

Brunnberg, Gurli and Edward (1983) Either the fund in its entirety or solely the interest thereon is used to support rheumatology research and advanced . In any event, opportunities for integration of such activities with reha- bilitation or other relevant medical undertakings that could be pursued at Sätra Brunn shall be taken into consideration. Awards are made by the Board of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy at Uppsala Uni- versity.

Burén, Adélaide (1914) A scholarship is provided for a student known to be truly God-fearing, well-mannered, dedicated and knowledgeable and possessing aptitude for study. Relatives enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may customarily be held for three years.

Burén, Adolf (1848) Scholarships are provided for dedicated students not of noble birth who belong to the Östgöta student nation. Relatives enjoy preference. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship committee and may be held for three years.

10 Burman, E O reader scholarships (1928) Scholarships are provided for readers of philosophy and, barring competent such applicants, other readers at the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Languages at Uppsala University. The scholarship holders are ap- pointed by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the Faculty of Arts. A scholarship may be held for three years if by a reader of philosophy and otherwise for one year.

Burman, J W (1837) A scholarship is provided for a needy student born in Jämtland. The inspector of the Norrland student nation appoints the scholarship holder in consultation with the nation’s scholarship curator. The scholar- ship may be held for two years.

Burmeister (1760) Scholarships are provided for students who lack means, belong to the Gotland student nation, were born on Gotland or of parents born there and are genuinely inhabitants of Gotland. The scholarship holders are appointed by the diocesan chapter in Visby, and the scholarships may be held for four years. Travel scholarships may be paid every fourth year to the individuals already holding scholarships within the foundation.

Busoli, Gian Carlo and Birgit (1991) One or more travel scholarships, for studies at Italian universities, with the aim of promoting culture, are awarded annually by the Vice-Chancellor.

Bylund (1818) A scholarship for a student of medicine who lacks means and belongs to the Norrland student nation is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship commit- tee, which recommendations shall be approved by the inspector, and may be held for three years.

Byström (1871) A scholarship is provided for a student from Värmland who has demonstrated a capacity for study and is pursuing study within the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Languages, the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Social Sciences or the Faculty of Science and Technology or pursuing a career in art. The scholarship holder, who may not belong to the Roman Catholic Church, is appointed by the Vice- Chancellor. The scholarship may be held for three years, with extension by at most three years being pos- sible.

Byzantine travel scholarships (1803) Scholarships are provided to support study spanning six to 12 months at foreign universities by unmarried students between the ages of 22 and 30 who have been registered at Swedish universities for at least three years and at Uppsala University for at least one. Applicants shall have completed college-level or equiva- lent degrees, preferably in fields connected with “statistics and those sciences most closely related to the domestic sciences.” The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommenda- tions from the Faculty of Science and Technology.

Börjeson, Emil and Ragna (1986) Scholarships are provided for deserving, younger researchers at the Faculty of Medicine who have de- fended dissertations and wish to continue full-time study at the faculty with the aim of attaining the title of “reader.” Researchers at Uppsala University are intended. The scholarships are awarded by the Board of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy. Applicants shall have completed dissertations no earlier than five years prior to the application deadline.

Börjesson, new (1876) A scholarship for a student belonging to the Gothenburg student nation is awarded annually during the autumn term by the nation’s inspector on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s senior council.

11 Börjesson, old (1872) Scholarships are provided for male students who are studying towards or higher degrees, are distinguished by dedication and aptitude and are members of the Gothenburg student nation. Preference is enjoyed by any born in the parish of Tanum or Kville in Bohuslän. A reader in need of support may receive the new and an old Börjesson scholarship concurrently. The scholarship holders are appointed for one year at a time by the University’s Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector. The same person may, upon reapplication, be awarded a scholarship for three years.

Böttiger (1879) Scholarships are provided for dedicated, orderly students without means. Relatives enjoy preference. Scholarships awarded to non-relatives shall go to students of the arts and sciences who have not been at the University for more than three years. Upper secondary school leaving certificates are to be enclosed with applications. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for a maximum of five years by relatives and a maximum of three years by non-relatives.

Böttiger prize (1879) Prizes for needy, dedicated students belonging to the Västmanland-Dala student nation are awarded at the formal congress of the nation’s honourable and senior members on Walpurgis Night.

Carlberg, Gustav (1932) Scholarships are provided to support research and research-related education within the field of history of ideas and science at Uppsala University. The Faculty of Arts appoints the scholarship holders on the basis of recommendations from the department board.

Carlson, H W (1846) Scholarships for dedicated students born in County of parents resident there are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for four years.

Carlsson, Ingemar (1947) Scholarships for younger students who have demonstrated clear inclination and aptitude for studies within the field of economics are awarded during the spring term by the Swedish Economic Association.

Carlsson, J and H (1900) Scholarships are provided for dedicated students of theology who lack means, belong to the Östgöta stu- dent nation, have been registered members of the nation for at least one year and preferably intend to enter the priesthood. Students born in the city of Norrköping enjoy preference. The Vice-Chancellor and the nation’s curators and senior members submit recommendations to the rector of the parish of St. Olai in Norrköping, who, together with the rectors of the parishes of Hedvig and Matteus, appoints the schol- arship holders. The scholarships may be held for three or at most four years.

Carlsson, Josef and Linnéa (1975) The yearly disposable income is used to support researchers who have been accepted to postgraduate programmes at the Faculty of Medicine at Uppsala University, have yet to complete doctoral degrees and are pursuing medical research focused on diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Awards are made by the Board of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Carnegie (1882) Two scholarships for students of theology who have been accepted to postgraduate programmes in any of the fields of systematic theology and studies of worldviews, ethics and philosophy of religion are awarded by the Faculty of Theology and may be held for three years.

Carnegie, “Reader Scholarship” for doctors of theology (1882) A scholarship for a doctor of theology, to support research within the field of systematic philosophy and studies of worldviews, ethics or philosophy of religion, is awarded annually by the Faculty of Theology and may upon renewed application be awarded to the same person for a total of six years.

12 Caspersson (1880) A scholarship is provided for a dedicated student who is not of noble birth and belongs to the Småland student nation. Relatives enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor if to a rela- tive and by the general scholarship committee of the Småland student nation if to a non-relative. The scholarship may be held for five years if by a relative and for three if by a non-relative. Any non-relative is obliged to relinquish his or her scholarship at the end of the term in which a relative applies.

Cavalli, J G (1868) Scholarships for needy, dedicated students who are registered and actively pursuing education at the Fac- ulty of Pharmacy are awarded annually by the faculty.

Cervin (1899) Scholarships are provided for students who lack means and belong to the Småland student nation, in the first instance for relatives and otherwise for other applicants, with preference enjoyed by any born in Kro- noberg County. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the general scholarship committee of the Småland student nation and may be held for two years.

Claéson, C and G foundation for cancer research (1979) Grants and scholarships are provided to support cancer research pursued at the faculty, with a preference for research associated with clinical treatment or radiation therapy. Awards are made by the Board of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Danckwardt (1732) A scholarship is provided for a student who lacks means and belongs to the Östgöta or Västmanland-Dala student nation, preferably a needy relative of P von Danckwardt. The Vice Chancellor recommends two candidates, whereupon the eldest member of the Danckwardt family appoints the scholarship holder. The scholarship may be held by a relative for the entire time of his or her studies and by a non-relative for four years.

Daug (1944) Scholarships for talented, needy Swedish students of mathematics are awarded every third year by the Vice-Chancellor.

Dickson (1859) Scholarships are provided for students of theology, law, medicine and the arts and sciences who lack means. Each faculty shall appoint its own scholarship holders. The scholarships may be held for three years, with extension by one year being possible.

Edfeldt (1927) A scholarship is provided for a member of the Norrland student nation who is studying some field cov- ered by the Faculty of Arts or Faculty of Languages. The scholarship holder is appointed by the Vice- Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship committee, which recommen- dations shall be approved by the inspector. The scholarship may be held for at most three years.

Ehlin, Ingemar (1966) Scholarships are provided for dedicated students. Relatives of the testator’s maternal grandfather, Per Erik Norberg of Kramfors, shall enjoy preference. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor for one year. The same person may receive a scholarship for a maximum of three years.

Ekendahl (1722) A scholarship is provided for a virtuous, needy student. The scholarship may be held for four years. The scholarship holder is appointed by the archbishop.

13 Eklund, Hanna, for neurological research (1970) The purpose of the fund is to support research at the neurology clinic at Uppsala University Hospital. The disposable income of the fund is used to provide grants for clinical research projects and academic travel. The fund is administered by the dean of the Faculty of Medicine and the heads of the neurology clinic and clinical neurophysiology laboratory at Uppsala University Hospital.

Ekman, A W (1898) Scholarships are provided for accomplished, needy students of theology adhering to the Evangelical Lu- theran perspective and belonging to the Småland student nation. Students pursuing higher-level theologi- cal studies and relatives enjoy preference. The inspector of the Småland student nation, in consultation with the senior council, recommends two or three applicants, whereupon the Faculty of Theology ap- points scholarship holders. A scholarship may be held for two years and may be extended for an addi- tional year if no other student of theology who ought to enjoy preference applies.

Ekman, G W (1916) A scholarship is provided for a student or reader to support scholarly/scientific work in the field of Nor- dic archaeology. Among applicants of comparable merit, preference is enjoyed by members of the Söder- manland-Nerike student nation and, thereafter, by that person most in need. The Faculty of Arts appoints the scholarship holder on the basis of recommendations from the professor at the Department of Ar- chaeology and Ancient History. Any person who has held the scholarship for one year shall enjoy prefer- ence, as required to complete the project in question, for the ensuing two years. An additional extension may apply if no other appropriate applicant applies.

Ekman, O (1882) A scholarship is in the first instance awarded to a PhD at Uppsala University whose degree is preferably in philosophy or history and who has been accepted to a postgraduate programme in systematic theology and studies of worldviews, ethics or philosophy of religion In the second instance, the scholarship is awarded to a licentiate or bachelor of arts whose degree is preferably in philosophy or history and who has been accepted to a postgraduate programme in studies of faiths and worldviews. Barring any such appli- cant, the scholarship is awarded to a student of theology who has been accepted to a postgraduate pro- gramme in studies of faiths and worldviews or a doctor of theology intending to pursue research in the same field. Should such an applicant as should be awarded the scholarship in the first instance submit an application, any current holder of the scholarship not meeting the same standard is required to relinquish the scholarship at the end of the term in which such application is made. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the Faculty of Theology and may be held for three years.

Ekman, V, for the Gästrike-Hälsinge student nation (1899) Scholarships for needy, dedicated students who are successfully pursuing scientific/scholarly studies and belong to the Gästrike-Hälsinge student nation are awarded by the nation’s scholarship committee and may be held for two years.

Ekman, V, for the Upland student nation (1899) Scholarships for needy, dedicated students who are successfully pursuing scientific/scholarly studies and belong to the Upland student nation are awarded by the inspector and senior members of the Upland student nation and may be held for two years.

Ekman, Vilhelm (1899) Financial support is provided to help scientists/scholars associated with Uppsala University to publish the results of their scientific/scholarly research in printed form. Support may be provided for the publication of scientific/scholarly works and writings and, to a limited extent, scientific/scholarly journals. Grants from the foundation are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from a special committee.

14 Ekwall, Eilert (1951) Scholarships are provided for students belonging to the Småland student nation, with greater considera- tion made of accomplishment and talent than need of support. The Vice-Chancellor appoints the scholar- ship holders on the basis of recommendations from the inspector and general scholarship committee of the Småland student nation. The scholarships are awarded annually. The same person may receive an award for a maximum of three years.

Eneström (1903) Scholarships are provided for gifted, dedicated, needy students, in the first instance for relatives and oth- erwise with a preference for members of the Västmanland-Dala student nation. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for four years, with extension by at most four additional years being possible.

Engborg (1920) A scholarship is provided for a dedicated student without means. Members of the Södermanland-Nerike and Västmanland-Dala student nations hold the scholarship by turns. Preference is enjoyed by relatives and otherwise, where the scholarship is awarded to a member of the Södermanland-Nerike student nation, by any born or registered in the Taxinge-Näsby, Kernbo or Asker parish in the Diocese of Strängnäs or, where the scholarship is awarded to a member of the Västmanland-Dala student nation, by any born or registered in the Västerdalarna or parish. The scholarship is awarded by the relevant nation’s inspector and senior members and may be held for four years.

Engström, Stina and Bertil (1989) Support is provided for relatively young, especially deserving researchers at the Faculty of Medicine and may take the form of research grants, funding for material or salary costs or scholarships relating to such research as is judged, at the relevant award occasion, to be especially important. Applicants shall be based at Uppsala University and shall be postgraduate students or have completed their doctoral degrees within five years of the application deadline. Awards are made by the postgraduate programmes committee of the Board of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Engströmer (1933) Scholarships are provided for promising, needy students of law who belong to the Norrland student na- tion and completed upper secondary school within the previous three years. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship board, which rec- ommendations shall be approved by the inspector, and may be held for three years.

Eriksson, Gun and Edvin (1973) The goal of the fund is to support cancer research at Uppsala University Hospital. Grants for such re- search, whether relating to clinical research projects or academic travel, are provided out of the disposable income of the fund. The grants are awarded by a committee consisting of the dean of the Faculty of Medicine and the heads of the surgical and medical clinics at Uppsala University Hospital.

Eriksson, Lisa (1980) Income from the owned properties accrues to Uppsala University and is used to support medical research. Income from the other capital assets is used to support cancer research at Uppsala University Hospital. Awards are made by the postgraduate programmes committee of the Board of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Eschelsson, Elsa (1911)* Scholarships are provided for female students of law at Uppsala University, Lund University and Stock- holm University. Preference and, should two of the fund’s scholarships be available, the right to receive both, is enjoyed by students writing doctoral dissertations. The scholarships are awarded by the Faculty of Law and may be held for three years, with extension by at most three years being possible.

15 Esseen, L and C-G, for mathematical studies (2002) Scholarships are provided to support continued mathematical studies by deserving younger researchers at Uppsala University who have completed dissertations within the field of mathematics, especially within (in no particular order) pure and applied mathematics, mathematical statistics or scientific computing (nu- merical mathematics). The scholarships are especially intended for younger, promising researchers who need not yet be entirely established; younger readers and senior lecturers may also be considered and, in exceptional cases, professors. Among those of approximately equal merit, researchers within probability theory and mathematical statistics enjoy preference. The scholarships are primarily intended to support research-related travel abroad, in the first instance to cover the cost of travel to and stays at foreign re- search institutions and in the second instance to cover the cost of travel to congresses or conferences outside Sweden. Barring well-qualified applicants for travel funding, scholarships may even be awarded to support research projects within Sweden. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from a committee.

Ewerlöf (1842) A scholarship for an accomplished student who lacks means and belongs to the Gothenburg student na- tion is awarded annually by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s in- spector.

Fahlstedt (1892) Scholarships are provided for male students belonging to the Norrland student nation. Relatives enjoy preference. The scholarships are awarded by the nation’s inspector on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship committee and may be held for three years.

Falkenberg (1732) Scholarships are provided for students of noble birth who lack means. Members of the donor’s Falken- berg family and her husband’s Sparre family enjoy preference. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice- Chancellor and may be held for five years.

Faltzburg (1750) A scholarship is provided for a student who possesses exceptional talent for study and lacks means. Stu- dents at the Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Languages, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Science and Technology hold the scholarship by turns. The Vice-Chancellor appoints the scholarship holder on the basis of recommenda- tions from the relevant faculty. The scholarship may be held for four years.

Faltzburg travel scholarship (1750) A student travel scholarship for academic travel in Sweden or abroad is awarded every fourth year by the faculty currently in possession of the right to award scholarships provided by the foundation. The Vice- Chancellor appoints the scholarship holder on the basis of recommendations from the faculty in question.

Filén endowment (1822) Scholarships are provided for needy, younger researchers whose scientific/scholarly writings evidence accomplishment, in the first instance for readers at Uppsala University who have successfully established themselves and in the second instance for postgraduate students. The scholarships are awarded, independ- ently of any application process, by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the facul- ties and may be held for three years, with extension by three years being possible.

Fjellstedt (formerly) (1944) A scholarship is provided for a student of theology, with preference enjoyed by any who has received schooling from the Peter Fjellstedt Foundation. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the Peter Fjellstedt Foundation and may be held for one year, with exten- sion by two years being possible.

16 Flodin, for the Stockholm student nation (1795) Scholarships are provided for students who belong to the Stockholm student nation, were born in Stock- holm and have parents who support themselves as entrepreneurs, either within commerce or some other field, or hold positions of responsibility within entrepreneurial businesses. Applicants shall be between the ages of 18 and 24 at the time of application. Scholarships may be awarded to older applicants in the ab- sence of applicants within the aforementioned age range. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice- Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector and scholarship committee and may be held for three years.

Flodin, for the Östgöta student nation (1795) Scholarships are provided for students who belong to the Östgöta student nation, were born in the Dio- cese of Linköping and are the sons/daughters of 1) officials who serve at the national/municipal level or at companies partly owned by the state or 2) priests. Applicants shall be between the ages of 18 and 24 at the time of application. Scholarships may be awarded to older applicants in the absence of applicants within the aforementioned age range. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector and scholarship committee and may be held for three years.

Flygare Christmas gift (1875) Awards are made to students without means who preferably hail from northern Bohuslän, especially Strömstad, or belong to the Västmanland-Dala student nation. The entire amount is awarded by the Vice- Chancellor at the end of the autumn term. The same person may receive an award at most three times.

Folkskoleseminariets i Uppsala (Uppsala elementary-school teachers training) memorial fund (1972) Scholarships for students intending to become teachers for grades 4-9 are awarded by the Board of the Faculty of Educational Sciences on the basis of recommendations from the Department of Teacher Edu- cation.

Forsling (1973) A scholarship is provided for a needy student, with a preference, in the first instance, for any whose father or mother is or has been employed by the University in the position known during Forsling’s time as “vaktmästare” (porter) and, in the second instance, for any born in Uppland. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor.

Fransén (1864) Scholarships for dedicated, needy students who preferably belong to the Gothenburg or Kalmar student nation are awarded annually by the Vice-Chancellor.

Fridjonsdottir, Katrin and Bo Gustafsson foundation (1992)* Prizes are preferentially awarded to younger researchers in Sweden and other Nordic countries for signifi- cant research findings within the field of sociology of knowledge, especially involving consideration of how knowledge develops in concert with research, research organisations, research policy and societal development.

Fries, Ellen (1907)* A scholarship is provided for a Swedish woman to support scholarly historical research at a Swedish or foreign university, archive or library. Any woman who has completed a bachelor or licentiate of arts de- gree with history as the primary field of study or demonstrated an aptitude for historical scholarship by publishing some historical work may apply. Among applicants of equal merit, any who has studied or is studying at Uppsala University enjoys preference. Notice of availability is made annually at all of the coun- try’s universities and other institutions of higher learning, and the award is made by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the professors of history and economic history. The scholarship may be awarded repeatedly to the same person.

17 Friesen, Otto von (1931) Support is provided for scholarly research with regard to the Scandinavian languages at Uppsala University and the education of especially talented students intending to become researchers in the field. The head of the Department of Scandinavian Languages makes any decisions with regard to awards.

Fryxell (1840) A scholarship is provided for a deserving student belonging to the Värmland student nation. Members of the Fryxell family enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the Värmland student nation.

Furtherance of a Christian worldview (1972) The foundation serves in the first instance to promote the Christian worldview among students in the compulsory school teacher’s programme or such other teacher’s programme as may succeed said pro- gramme at the Department of Teacher Education at Uppsala University. Support is provided to student associations operating in accordance with the goals of the foundation. The foundation serves in the sec- ond instance to promote ethics and morals based on Christian values. The Board of the Faculty of Educa- tional Sciences makes any decisions regarding awards.

Gahn foundation for students of chemistry (1919) One half of the income from the fund is used to provide scholarships for needy students of chemistry at Uppsala University, with preference enjoyed by relatives. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice- Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the Faculty of Science and Technology. The remaining half is used to further the cause of chemistry research at Uppsala University.

Gahn, Henrik (1932) Scholarships are provided for needy male students belonging to the Västmanland-Dala student nation. Relatives, without regard to student nation membership, enjoy preference. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector and may be held for four years.

Geijer, C F (1794) A scholarship is provided for a needy student of theology belonging to the Värmland student nation, pref- erably one who has acquired knowledge of health care, social work or human psychology by attending courses or otherwise. The Vice-Chancellor submits three recommendations, on the basis of which the nation’s inspector appoints the scholarship holder. The scholarship may be held for three years.

Geijer, E G, for studies in history (Jenny Lind scholarship) (1886) A scholarship for a needy, dedicated student of history is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the Faculty of Arts and may be held for three years. An extension of one year may apply following special review.

Geijer, E G, for studies in philosophy/aesthetics and musicology/literary history (1886) A scholarship is provided for a needy, dedicated student. Students of philosophy/aesthetics and musicol- ogy/literary history hold the scholarship by turns. When the scholarship is awarded to a student of musi- cology/literary history, students with demonstrated talent for verse enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the Faculty of Arts and may be held for three years. An extension of one year may apply following special review.

18 Geijer prize (1854) An award is made, independently of any application process, at the end of the spring term of every third year to acknowledge the best dissertation in history during the preceding three-year period. The award is made by a prize committee consisting of the professors of history, the professor of economic history, a representative appointed by the Vice-Chancellor and a representative appointed by the curators of all of the student nations under the chairmanship of the first curator of the Stockholm student nation. The prize takes the form of a gold medal or, should the prize-winner prefer, a silver medal and a cash amount.

Geijer-Waern (1911) A scholarship is provided for an especially deserving student belonging to the Värmland student nation to defray the cost of studies. The scholarship holder is appointed by the nation’s scholarship committee, and the scholarship may be held for three years, with extension by one year being possible.

Gernandt for the Faculty of Arts (1902) Scholarships are provided for dedicated, accomplished students of Egyptology. Applicants whose studies and work deal with the philosophical conceptions of the ancient Egyptians or who are occupied with un- derstanding pre-Egyptian conceptual associations enjoy preference. An especially deserving student of Egyptology may receive scholarships from both Gernandt foundations. The scholarships are awarded every year by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the professor of Egyptology and may be extended for one or at most two years upon reapplication.

Gernandt for the Faculty of Languages (1902) Scholarships for dedicated, accomplished students of the Semitic languages, excepting any who are study- ing Hebrew in connection with clerical studies, are awarded each year by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the professor of Semitic languages and may be extended for one or at most two years upon reapplication.

Gjerdman, Olof (1962) Scholarships are provided for teachers and students at Uppsala University to support research in connec- tion with a) the , especially the standard language, in poetry and prose and with regard to grammar, the origin of words, semantics and style and b) the various disciplines within the general field of languages. Awards are made annually by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from a) the professors of Swedish and Nordic languages and b) representatives for the specialised disciplines relevant to particular cases.

Glas, for the Gotland student nation (1877) A scholarship is provided for an accomplished, needy student who belongs to the Gotland student nation and was born in the . The nation’s scholarship committee and inspector recommend three applicants, whereupon the Vice-Chancellor appoints the scholarship holder. The scholarship may be held for two years, with extension by one year being possible.

Glas, for the Norrland student nation (1877) A scholarship is provided for an accomplished, needy student who belongs to the Norrland student nation and was born in the Diocese of Härnösand or the Diocese of Luleå. The nation’s scholarship committee and inspector recommend three applicants, whereupon the Vice-Chancellor appoints the scholarship holder. The scholarship may be held for two years, with extension by one year being possible.

Glas, for students of medicine (1877) A scholarship is provided for an accomplished, needy student of medicine who is a member of the Upp- sala Medical Society and was born in Sweden. The professor at the Medical Faculty who is most senior in terms of years of service recommends three applicants, whereupon the Vice-Chancellor appoints the scholarship holder. The scholarship may be held for two years, with extension by one year being possible.

19 Graffman (1818) Scholarships are provided for students without means who belong to the Södermanland-Nerike student nation and are studying theology, classical languages, mathematics, physics, natural history or, in the ab- sence of such, law or medicine. Two scholarships are preferably awarded to priests who are serving or have served in the Diocese of Strängnäs. In addition, qualified relatives, regardless of student nation membership, enjoy preference with regard to one of the scholarships. The nation’s inspector recommends three applicants, whereupon the Vice-Chancellor appoints scholarship holders. The scholarships may be held for four years.

Grimlund, Annie (1978) Travel scholarships are awarded every third year on the basis of recommendations from the chief physi- cian at the ear clinic at Uppsala University Hospital to deserving researchers studying diseases of the ear, with preference enjoyed by any who have shown an interest in research relating to Ménières disease.

Groth-Schubert (1896) A scholarship is provided for a student belonging to the Värmland student nation. Relatives, without re- gard to student-association membership, enjoy preference. The scholarship committee of the nation rec- ommends three applicants, one of whom is appointed by the inspector. The scholarship may be held for three years, with extension by two years being possible. Any scholarship holder who is not a relative must relinquish the scholarship two terms following submission of an application by a relative.

Grönwall (1752) A scholarship is provided for a gifted, needy student belonging to the Västmanland-Dala student nation. Relatives enjoy preference. A larger award applies for any native or resident of the Dalarna region and a smaller one for any native or resident of Västmanland. The Vice-Chancellor recommends three applicants, whereupon the nation’s inspector appoints the scholarship holder. The scholarship may be held for four years.

Gudmundi Foundation (1923) Scholarships are provided for needy students belonging to the Värmland student nation, in the first in- stance for students of theology intending to enter the priesthood and in the second instance for students of the arts and sciences intending to become senior-level compulsory-school teachers. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector and scholarship committee for terms of three years and may be extended upon renewed application for one year at a time to cover the entire period of study.

Gustafsson, Gerda (1956) A scholarship for a needy student of theology is awarded annually by the Faculty of Theology.

Gustavian (1806) A scholarship is provided for a needy student of the “belles lettres and history of the Swedish language,” with preference enjoyed by any focused on the Gustavian period. The scholarship is awarded by the Swed- ish Academy and may be held for three years.

Guthermuth (1726) Scholarships for students of theology who have attained the age of 18 years are awarded annually by the dean of the cathedral in Stockholm and the pastor of the German parish in Stockholm on the basis of recommendations from the Faculty of Theology. The foundation is administered by the parish of the cathedral in Stockholm.

20 Guthermuth travel scholarships (1726) Travel scholarships for students of theology and young, unsalaried academic teachers are awarded annually on the basis of recommendations from the Faculty of Theology by the dean of the cathedral in Stockholm and the pastor of the German parish in Stockholm. The foundation is administered by the parish of the cathedral in Stockholm.

Gyllenhjelm (1629) Scholarships are provided for needy students. Persons of noble birth, especially any who are relatives of the donor’s wife, Christina Ribbing, enjoy preference. Hallander prize (1927) Prizes for dedicated, talented students belonging to the Västmanland-Dala student nation are awarded at the formal congress of the student nation’s honourable and senior members on Walpurgis Night.

Hallberg, Malin and Ivar (1927) Scholarships for talented students, with a preference in the first instance for relatives and thereafter for members of the Gothenburg student nation, are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recom- mendations from the nation’s scholarship committee and inspector and may be held for two years, with extension by two years being possible.

Hallström, C E (1853) A scholarship is provided for a student who lacks means, belongs to the Gotland student nation and is between the ages of 18 and 25. The scholarship holder is appointed by the bishop of the Diocese of Visby on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector. The scholarship may be held for three years, with extension by one year, to cover the cost of study abroad, being possible.

Hammarskjöld (1711) Scholarships are provided for gifted, needy students who completed upper-secondary school in that part of Kalmar county that belongs to the Diocese of Linköping, have studied at Uppsala University for at least one year and belong to the Östgöta or Kalmar student nation. A maximum of three scholarships, which may be held for four years, are awarded. The Vice-Chancellor submits recommendations with re- gard to scholarship holders, who are appointed by the owner of Tuna gård in Vimmerby.

Hansson, Borbos Erik (1932) Awards to cover costs associated with publication of writings and research/study-related travel associated with political science at Uppsala University are made by a committee consisting of the Vice-Chancellor of the University, the professor of political science and a representative appointed by the Vice-Chancellor.

Hansson, Sture (1995) The funds are used by the Faculty of Medicine to support cancer research. Awards are made by the post- graduate programmes committee of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Harling, David (1941) A scholarship for a dedicated student without means who belongs to the Östgöta student nation and is pursuing study at the Faculty of Science and Technology is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship committee and may be held for three years.

Hartmann (1957) Support is provided to cover costs associated with publication of writings, research/study-related travel and other purposes conducive to furthering research and study within the field of political science, espe- cially relating to the press. Awards are made every third year on the basis of recommendations from a committee consisting of the University’s Vice-Chancellor, the professor of political science and a repre- sentative appointed by the Vice-Chancellor.

21 Hedberg, A P (1882) Scholarships for dedicated students born within the Kind administrative county district who have attained the age of 20 are awarded by the Gothenburg student nation and may be held for two years, with exten- sion for one year at a time being possible. The total term for which any scholarship is held may not exceed five years.

Hedberg, J A (1928) A scholarship for a needy male student belonging to the Östgöta student nation and born in Östergötland is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for three years, with extension by one year being pos- sible.

Hedenström (1875) A scholarship is provided for a promising student of medicine. Members of the Gästrike-Hälsinge student nation enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded by the Faculty of Medicine and may be held for four years.

Hedin (1917) A scholarship is provided for a student belonging to the Upland student nation. Applicants from Fjärd- hundra enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for three years.

Hedman (1765) Scholarships are provided, in the first instance, for members of the Kinman family. Barring such appli- cants, scholarships are awarded by each faculty. A relative may hold a scholarship until the age of 25. A non-relative may hold a scholarship for three years but must relinquish it if a relative registers for study at Uppsala University. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor if to relatives and otherwise by the faculties in question.

Hedrén (1848) Scholarships are provided for needy, dedicated students of theology who belong to the Östgöta or Värm- land student nation and who intend to enter the priesthood. The Faculty of Theology submits recommen- dations, whereupon the bishops of Linköping and Karlstad appoint the scholarship holders. The scholar- ships may be held for three years, with extension by one year being possible.

Hedström, Birgit and Bengt, foundation for paediatric neurology (1960) The fund’s monies are used in the first instance to provide 1) grants for researchers associated with Upp- sala University/Uppsala University Hospital and involved with research projects within the field of paedi- atric neurology and 2) scholarships to enable doctors in Uppsala to conduct special investigations within the field of paediatric neurology and to enable leading researchers within the field to be brought to Upp- sala. Awards are made by a committee.

Hedström, Kristiane and O F (1937)* Support is provided for genetic research, particularly within the field of human genetics, at Uppsala Uni- versity, Lund University, Stockholm University and Karolinska Institute, in the first instance by Swedish researchers whether within Sweden or abroad and in the second instance by foreign researchers in Swe- den. Awards are made by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from a special committee.

Hellberg, Eira (1989) The funds are distributed by the Faculty of Theology on the basis of recommendations from the professor of psychology of religion and are used to purchase literature, bring in guest lecturers and provide travel scholarships for researchers and postgraduate students.

22 Hellgren, E (1991) The income from the fund is used for research within the field of cultural history, with a special focus on change to natural environments and cultural preservation initiatives with regard to objects of research. Research conducted at Uppsala University is eligible for support. Notice is made annually by the scholar- ship office, and recipients are chosen by the deans of the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Social Sciences in consultation with professors within the relevant fields.

Hellvik (1798) Scholarships for dedicated, needy students belonging to the Östgöta student nation are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for six years, provided, however, that no scholarship may be held after the holder has attained the age of 31.

Hellvik prize (1798) A prize is awarded by the Östgöta student nation on the occasion of the first ordinary meeting of each term to a needy compatriot “who has earned the nation’s respect and friendship through exceptional ac- complishment and exemplary conduct.”

Helmfeldt (1683) Scholarships are provided for needy, dedicated students. Those of noble birth enjoy preference with re- gard to half of the scholarships. Needy relatives of Field Marshall S. G. Helmfeldt enjoy preference with regard to two-thirds of the scholarships on two of every three occasions of award; relatives of the Field Marshall’s wife, M. H. Helmfeldt, née von Parr, enjoy such preference on one of every three such occa- sions. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for five years.

Henschen (1933) A scholarship for a needy, dedicated, male student belonging to the Upland student nation and possessing talent for scholarly/scientific studies is awarded by the nation’s inspector and senior members and may customarily be held for three years.

Hermansson, Seda and Signe (1964) One or more scholarships are awarded annually by the Board of the Faculty of Medicine to support im- portant medical research, in the first instance in connection with the attainment of reader qualification and in the second instance in connection with doctoral dissertation preparation.

Hessle (1880) A scholarship is provided for a male student belonging to the Västgöta student nation. Male relatives en- joy preference. The nation’s inspector and curator, together with a delegate appointed at the general con- vention, determine the term for which the scholarship is to apply and may divide funds among a number of equally deserving persons.

Hierta, Wilhelmina (1891) A scholarship for a talented, dedicated, needy, female student of medicine is awarded by the Faculty of Medicine for one year at a time. The same person may receive a scholarship for a maximum of six years.

Hill (1960) A scholarship for a student at the Faculty of Pharmacy at Uppsala University who is deemed to be deserv- ing it on the basis of study progress is awarded every other year by the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Hollander (1892) Scholarships are provided for needy students belonging to the Västgöta student nation. The nation’s in- spector, curators and four student representatives elected by the nation’s members recommend three ap- plicants, whereupon the Vice-Chancellor appoints scholarship holders. The scholarships may be held for two years.

Holmgren, Gunnar, memorial (1983)* At least SEK 3,000 of the disposable income is used each year to invite guest researchers within the field of orthopaedic technology and the related field of orthopaedic surgery. The remainder is awarded in the form of scholarships for students at Uppsala University and other students and professionals aiming to acquire special knowledge within the related fields of orthopaedic technology and orthopaedic surgery. Awards are made annually by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from a specially ap- pointed committee.

Holst, for the Gästrike-Hälsinge student nation (1879) A scholarship for a dedicated, needy, male student belonging to the Gästrike-Hälsinge student nation is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for three years.

Holst, for students born in Roslagen (1879) Scholarships are provided for dedicated, needy, male students, in the first instance for any born in any of the parish of Lohärad, Malsta or Husby in Norrtälje Municipality. Barring such applicants, scholarships are awarded to students from that part of Uppland known as Roslagen in 1879. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for three years.

Hultengren (1975)* The fund’s monies are used by the Department of Philosophy to further the cause of scholarly education, for translation fees and for printing costs in connection with making foreign-language philosophical books and essays available in Swedish. Any Swedish university or other institution of higher learning with a regu- lar professor of philosophy shall have an equal right to support. Decisions with regard to the awarding of funds from the foundation are made by a committee consisting of the professors of theoretical and practi- cal philosophy at Swedish universities and other institutions of higher learning, which committee shall be convened by the eldest professor of philosophy at Uppsala University.

Indoiranian Foundation (1881) Support is provided for students and teachers at Uppsala University to cover costs in connection with academic travel and publication of scholarly/scientific work and in reward for such publication. The funds may also be used to support instruction within the fields of the Indian and Iranian languages, where such instruction is not handled by ordinary teachers. The scholarships are awarded by the Faculty of Languages on the basis of recommendations from the professors of Indology and Iranian studies.

25 Jernfelz (1806) A scholarship is provided for a student of theology belonging to the Södermanland-Nerike student nation and “possessing proven ability to serve in a priestly capacity”. Johansson, Margot and Rune (1972)* Support is provided to further scholarly research with regard to the development of Buddhism and the interpretation of Buddhist conceptual meanings. The disposable income is used to support research into the history of Buddhism, which may encompass philological research, in the first instance at Uppsala Uni- versity. The Vice-Chancellor appoints scholarship holders and distributes grants on the basis of recom- mendations from a committee appointed by the Board of the Faculty of Theology.

Juridiska fakulteten (Faculty of Law) travel scholarships (1865) Scholarships for students of law belonging to the Stockholm student nation, to support the cost of study abroad, are awarded every other year to postgraduate and other students who have obtained good exami- nation results during their first three years of curricular study. Awards are made during the autumn term by the Faculty of Law, which is not restricted to considering students who formally apply.

Juridiska föreningens (Law Students’ Association) (1945) Scholarships are awarded annually by the Law Students’ Association to members who have demonstrated exceptional talent for study.

Jägerskiöld, Gunnar, gift (1918) Support is provided for a promising student belonging to the Stockholm student nation. In the event that a relative of the donor or someone of Finnish background applies, appropriate consideration shall be taken to this at the time appointment. The award is made each year by the nation’s scholarship committee, which may decide to award a scholarship to the same person (upon renewed application) for a number of years.

Jänes (2007) Scholarships for young researchers within the Earth sciences are awarded annually by the Faculty of Sci- ence and Technology.

Kalmar student nation jubilee scholarships (1878) Scholarships for dedicated students known for good conduct and belonging to the Kalmar student nation are awarded by the nation’s inspector on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship committee and may be held for three years.

Karleson (1892) A scholarship is provided for a dedicated student of theology or the arts and sciences who belongs to the Gotland student nation. Relatives shall enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded annually by the na- tion.

Kjellin, O S (1929) Scholarships are provided for students of theology who are especially dedicated to church studies, particu- larly catechism, with preference enjoyed by any who were born in the Diocese of Västerås or the . Kristenson, Sven travel scholarships (1941)* Scholarships for scholarly travel to Italy, Greece or France are provided for students who have completed bachelors or licentiate degrees in classical archaeology, ancient history or art history at Uppsala University or Lund University and are continuing their studies in one of these fields. Certain relatives enjoy prefer- ence. The scholarships are awarded by the Faculty of Arts at Uppsala University. The foundation is man- aged by Lund University.

Kronberg (1888) Scholarships are provided for needy, dedicated students belonging to the Västmanland-Dala student na- tion, with preference enjoyed by relatives and applicants from Municipality. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship commit- tee and may be held for three years.

Kumlin, Hilda travel scholarships (1932) Support for readers and professors within language-related fields are awarded annually by the Faculty of Languages.

Kungl Vetenskapssamhällets (Royal Society of Arts and Scientists) research scholarships (0) Support for research into diseases of the heart and blood vessels is provided to cover costs of living and as grants for research/travel at the doctoral and postgraduate levels.

Kylander (1877) Scholarships for dedicated students of pharmacy without means are awarded annually by the faculty and are intended for students in the 8th and 9th terms of the pharmacist training programme.

Kåhre, for students born in Småland and the Diocese of Växjö (1684) A scholarship is provided for a needy student born in Småland or the Diocese of Växjö. Students of the- ology, the arts and sciences, law and medicine hold the scholarship by turns. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for eight years.

Kåhre, for students born in Uppland (1684) A scholarship is provided for a needy student born in Uppland. Students of theology, the arts and sci- ences, law and medicine hold the scholarship by turns. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for eight years.

Kåhre, for students born in Västergötland (1684) A scholarship is provided for a needy student born in Västergötland. Students of theology, the arts and sciences, law and medicine hold the scholarship by turns. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice- Chancellor and may be held for eight years.

Lagercrantz (1938) A scholarship, in the first instance for a relative in need of study-related support and in the second in- stance for a needy student belonging to the Småland student nation, is awarded by the nation’s inspector, first curator and senior council and may be held for three years, with extension by one year being possible.

Preference is enjoyed in the first instance by certain relatives and in the second instance by members of the Stockholm and Östgöta student nations. Among equally deserving applicants, financial need is taken into account. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for three years, with extension by two years being possible.

Lagerman, Axel (1920) A scholarship for a student of medicine is awarded by the Faculty of Medicine and may be held for three years.

Lagerström, O (1940) A scholarship is provided for a deserving, needy student belonging to the Stockholm student nation. Available funds are awarded every autumn term in their entirety by the nation’s scholarship committee.

Landberg, Carlo (1925) The disposable income is used to further the study of the Semitic languages, especially Arabic, at Uppsala University. This may be accomplished by the awarding of grants or scholarships or by other means to the stated end. Decisions with regard to the use of funds are made by the Faculty of Languages on the basis of recommendations from subject representatives for the Semitic languages programme.

Landin (1866) Scholarships are provided for students of law who lack means, particularly any of common birth, with preference enjoyed by members of the Stockholm student nation. The scholarships are awarded annually by the Faculty of Law.

Lang (1898) A scholarship is provided for a deserving student of medicine preferably belonging to the Gothenburg student nation. The scholarship is awarded annually by the Faculty of Medicine and may be awarded to the same person for a maximum of five years.

Larsson, Henning (1981) The disposable income is used to support research into debilitating neural diseases, particularly polyneu- ropathy, at Uppsala University Hospital. Grants to support clinical research projects and academic travel are awarded by a committee consisting of the dean of the Faculty of Medicine and the heads of the neu- rology clinic and central neurophysiology laboratory at Uppsala University Hospital.

Larsson, Jakob (1895) A scholarship is provided for a needy, talented student who belongs to the Värmland student nation and whose parents owned or operated a farming property in Värmland County, with a preference, among otherwise equally qualified applicants, for any born in the Ölme administrative county district. The na- tion’s scholarship committee renders an opinion to the inspector with regard to applicants and the order in which they should be considered; preference, among applicants of equal merit, is accorded the most needy. The inspector then submits recommendations to the Vice-Chancellor, who appoints the scholar- ship holder. The scholarship may be held for four years.

Lauri, Alfons (1987)* Grants for historical research (broadly speaking) into the post-1940 history of Latvia are provided to sup- port study at libraries, archives, museums and the like. Funds may be used to cover costs of living, travel and publication. Notice of availability is made annually at all of the universities in Sweden, and grants are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the dean of the Faculty of Arts and the professor of Baltic history, culture and society at Stockholm University.

31 Leander, Gustaf (1954) The disposable income is used in the first instance to provide grants for professors of mission studies at the University and, given an absence of such persons, for other teachers serving in place of such profes- sors and thereafter, to the extent that funds remain available, to provide scholarships for researchers and postgraduate students within the field. The Board of the Faculty of Theology or such other organ or deci- sion makers within the faculty as are appointed by such board determine how the income is used.

Leffler (1884) Scholarships are provided for needy, dedicated, male students who, in the first instance, are studying to- wards becoming priests or doctors, with preference enjoyed by male relatives of the shipping agent Johan Håkan Leffler of Gothenburg. Among applicants of equal merit, the most needy enjoy preference. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for five years.

Leffman, CR (1877) Scholarships for dedicated students who lack means and are in the fourth to eighth terms of the pharma- cist training programme are awarded annually by the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Leffman, CR, travel scholarships (1877) Scholarships for such students undergoing training as pharmacists/dispensers who are pursuing 30-credit advanced programmes and postgraduate students who were accepted to programmes within the antece- dent three years are awarded annually by the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Leijel (1729) Scholarships are provided for needy students who are related to Adam Jacobsson Leijel or, given an ab- sence of such applicants, from noble Swedish families. The scholarship holders are appointed by the Vice- Chancellor, and the scholarships may be held for four years, with extension by two years being possible.

Leksand Municipality (1980) Scholarships are provided to support scientific investigation of the natural history of the Dalarna region, particularly from the standpoint of geology (including palaeontology and hydrogeology), by PhDs and students who belong to the Västmanland-Dala student nation or can substantiate their origin in the Dalarna region. The scholarships are awarded every other year by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from a special committee.

Leman (1951) A scholarship for a student who belongs to the Gästrike-Hälsinge student nation and completed upper secondary school with good grades in Hudiksvall while resident in the parish of Hudiksvall or Forsa (as opposed to the greater Forsa municipality) in Gävleborg County is awarded annually by the Vice- Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship committee. The scholarship may upon renewed application be awarded to the same person for a number of consecutive years.

Lennander (1896)* Scholarships are provided for young Swedish researchers at any of the country’s universities and other institutions of higher learning, to support independent scientific and medical investigations and work that is promising from the standpoint of scientific/practical results. Financially independent applicants should generally not be considered. Notice of availability is made in October of each year, with applications to be received prior to 1 February of the following year. The Vice-Chancellor appoints persons of special exper- tise to submit, no later than 30 April, recommendations with regard to scholarship holders, on the basis of which the Vice-Chancellor makes awards. The scholarships may only be awarded for one year, but the same person may, upon renewed application, receive a scholarship for one consecutive year. One third of any amount awarded is held on deposit until the scholarship holder has submitted a report to the Vice- Chancellor with regard to findings and obtained approval with regard to the same. Such amount on de- posit is not paid if such report fails to be submitted within five years of the date of the award.

32 Lerici, C M (1940)* Scholarships are provided for students at Swedish universities and other institutions of higher learning to cover costs of study in Italy for periods of at least six months (which may be reduced no less than four months), in the first instance for study of an art historical, archaeological, philological or literary character. Scholarship holders should speak any of German, English and French and preferably some Italian. The foundation is administered by the fund office of the Swedish Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency.

Letterstedt travel scholarships (1860) Scholarships are provided for travel in connection with scholarly/scientific purposes within or without Sweden. No scholarship may be awarded to an applicant younger than 25 or older than 40. Notice of availability is made during the autumn term, and awards are made every sixth year at Uppsala University by the office of the Vice-Chancellor. The fund is administered by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and the disposable income is disbursed by the Royal Academy of Sciences for two of every six years and by each of Lund University, The Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry, Uppsala University and the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities for one of every six years.

Levin, A L (1778) A scholarship is provided for a needy student belonging to the Stockholm student nation. Needy relatives, without regard to student nation membership, enjoy preference. The nation’s inspector and curators sub- mit recommendations, on the basis of which the Vice-Chancellor appoints the scholarship holder. The scholarship may be held for three years.

Levin, Herman (1932) Scholarships are provided for needy students, with preference enjoyed by any who received upper- secondary-school diplomas (or the equivalent) from Lyceum för flickor (presently Nya Elementar) or Östermalms gymnasium (presently Östra Real) in Stockholm. Scholarship holders are entitled to retain their scholarships for study at Stockholm University or Karolinska Institute. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for three years, with extension by three years being possible.

Levin, L V (1879) Scholarships are provided for dedicated, needy students belonging to the Gothenburg student nation, with preference enjoyed by relatives. The nation’s inspector recommends three applicants, whereupon the Vice-Chancellor appoints scholarship holders. The scholarships may be held for three years.

Lidbeck (1878) Scholarships are provided for needy male students belonging to the Västgöta student nation, with prefer- ence enjoyed by relatives. The inspector and curators of the Västgöta student nation, together with two older and two younger students belonging to the nation, appoint the scholarship holders. The scholarships may be held for three years.

Lidén (1779) One scholarship is provided for a student of the arts and sciences; another is provided for a student of, alternatingly, theology, law or medicine who belongs to the Östgöta student nation. With regard to the latter scholarship, the following enjoy preference: students of theology who supplement their theological studies with humanistic studies, students of law who supplement their studies of law with studies within philosophy, history or political science and students of medicine with a knowledge of French, German or Latin. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector and may be held for four years.

33 Lignell (1846) A scholarship is provided for a needy, dedicated student belonging to the Gothenburg Student nation. The nation’s senior council recommends three applicants, whereupon the nation’s inspector appoints the scholarship holder. The scholarship may be held for one year and extended for one or at most two terms as determined by the inspector upon receipt of an opinion from the senior council. The nation’s first cura- tor is responsible for notice with regard to scholarship availability.

34 Liljewalch travel scholarships (1908) Scholarships are provided, in the first instance for travel in connection with research/study within/without Sweden and in the second instance for travel to conferences and the like, for deserving, younger researchers at the Faculty of Science and Technology at Uppsala University who have not at- tained the age of 35 by the application deadline, preferably have yet to defend a dissertation and were accepted to a postgraduate programme within the last two years. The scholarships are awarded during the winter term by the scholarship committee of the Faculty of Science and Technology.

Linck (1883) Scholarships are provided for students belonging to the Östgöta student nation who were born in the Diocese of Linköping. Students bearing the surname “Linck” who are relatives, on the male line, of the merchant Carl Gustaf Linck of Stockholm, enjoy preference without regard to place of birth. The scholar- ships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship committee and may be held for three years, with extension by one year being possible.

Lind, Hans (1889) A scholarship is provided for a needy, dedicated male student born in Bohuslän. Male relatives of the donor enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for three years.

Lind, Wilhelm (1929) A scholarship for a needy, well-mannered male student who has been registered at the Faculty of Medicine at Uppsala University for at least one academic year is awarded by the faculty and may be held for three years.

Lindahl, Ester, travel scholarships (1921) One or more scholarships for travel abroad by students of medicine at Uppsala University are awarded annually be the Faculty of Medicine.

Lindblom (1793) A scholarship is provided for a needy student belonging to the Östgöta student nation and preferably born in Östergötland. Preference is enjoyed by relatives of the donor without regard to student nation membership. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector and may be held for three years, with extension by one year being possible.

Linddahl, Claes and Laura (1908) A scholarship is provided for a student of theology whose means are limited and who may be expected to make genuine contributions to the Church of Sweden, with a preference, among equally deserving candi- dates, for relatives and thereafter for members of the Upland student nation. The scholarship is awarded annually by the Faculty of Theology.

Lindeberg (1926) A scholarship is provided for a student who “has demonstrated exceptional dedication and conscientious- ness in the course of study.” Among applicants of equal merit, preference is enjoyed by any who earned upper-secondary-school diplomas (or the equivalent) in the city of Västervik and among such, by any who belong to the Kalmar student nation. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for three years, with extension being possible.

Lindelius, for the Södermanland-Nerike student nation (1786) A scholarship is provided for a needy, dedicated student. Relatives of the estate preacher Isak Lindelius, without regard to student nation membership, enjoy preference. The nation’s inspector appoints the scholarship holder, and the scholarship may be held for five years.

Relatives of the dean Boije, without regard to student nation membership, enjoy preference. The nation’s inspector appoints the scholarship holder, and the scholarship may be held for five years.

Linder, Sven travel scholarships (1941) Scholarships are awarded to persons who have earned bachelor or licentiate of theology degrees at Upp- sala University while pursuing studies encompassing Old Testament or New Testament exegesis or de- fended dissertations in virtue of which travel to “Palestine and its neighbouring countries” for purposes of archaeological, historical, linguistic, geographic or topographical research of relevance to Bible scholarship is warranted. Awards are made by the Faculty of Theology. No award may be made to any person who has attained the age of 40 or who holds a permanent teaching position.

Lindgren (1944) A scholarship for a needy student of medicine belonging to the Västmanland-Dala student nation is awarded by the Faculty of Medicine and may be held for three years.

Lindqvist, Natan, prize (1947) A prize for the PhD or licentiate at Uppsala University regarded “as having made, in recent years, the greatest contribution, through published writings, to the study of the Swedish language” is awarded every third year by the professor of Swedish.

Lindström (1915) A scholarship for a student of theology belonging to the Gästrike-Hälsinge student nation is awarded by the Faculty of Theology and may be held for two years.

36 Linnaeus scholarship foundation (1976) Support for members of Naturvetenskapliga studentsällskapet (the society of students of the natural sci- ences) enrolled at Uppsala University, in the first instance to cover costs of travel within the Nordic coun- tries and in the second instance to support research in connection with which no travel is required, is awarded during the spring term by a committee consisting of the chairman of the society and representa- tives for the botanical, zoological and geological sections.

Lokrantz (1947) A scholarship is provided for a needy, male student belonging to the Gotland student nation. The nation recommends three applicants at its “landskap” meeting, whereupon the nation’s inspector appoints the scholarship holder. The scholarship may be held for three years.

Lorich, Sonja (1974) The income is used to further scholarly work at the Department of English at Uppsala University by pur- chasing literature and funding research grants. Eligibility for such grants is restricted to Swedish citizens whose parents’ native language is Swedish and whose own native language is accordingly Swedish. The professor of English literature at the Department of English, together with, at such person’s request, any untenured readers and university lecturers in the same field, determine the use made of funds.

Lundberg, J G (1878) A scholarship, in the first instance for a dedicated student of theology belonging to the Stockholm student nation and in the second instance for a student of theology without regard to student nation membership, is awarded annually by the Vice-Chancellor.

Lundberg, K (1880) A scholarship is provided for a needy student of theology, with preference enjoyed by applicants belong- ing to the Norrland student nation and, among such, for any who were born in Västerbotten or Norrbot- ten. The Faculty of Theology appoints the scholarship holder, and the scholarship may be held for three years.

Lundberg, Majvor and Gunborg (1999) Research at the Faculty of Medicine at Uppsala University is fostered through the awarding of grants and/or scholarships to departments, research teams and/or individuals at the faculty. Awards are made by the Board of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Lundell, Elsa (formerly pre-school seminar) (1962) Scholarships are provided for students who, in the context of teacher training, have chosen to specialise in teaching and other pedagogical activities relating to the pre-school/pre-school-classes level. Notice of availability is made annually. Decisions are made by the Board of the Faculty of Teacher Education on the basis of recommendations from programme representatives.

Lundell, P O (1922)* Scholarships, preferably for younger researchers for successfully completed work and to enable scientific research that may be expected to result in valuable findings in connection with “subjects related to agricul- ture and domestic animals and thereto related sciences,” are awarded annually and alternatingly by year by the Faculty of Science and Technology at Uppsala University and the corresponding faculty at Lund Uni- versity.

Lundström, C F (1899) A scholarship is provided for a dedicated student belonging to the Småland student nation, with prefer- ence enjoyed by any “whose studies are of such a character as would be of use to our country’s industry or agriculture, in that order.” The nation’s general scholarship committee recommends three candidates, whereupon the scholarship holder is appointed by the Vice-Chancellor. The scholarship may be held for three years.

37 Lundström-Åman (1920) Scholarships for younger, deserving scientists, students and even unpaid readers devoted to study within the fields of pure mathematics and mechanics/mathematical physics are awarded by the Faculty of Science and Technology on the basis of recommendations from professors in the relevant fields. The faculty de- termines whether application or notice of availability is to be required in connection with the scholarships, which may be held for two years. The faculty may grant extensions of two years at a time, with the period for which any scholarship may be held not to exceed a total of six years, including the original two-year period.

Lutteman (1850) A scholarship is provided for a descendant of Dean Johan Lutteman or, in the absence of such a person at the University, for a “reader of high distinction” within the arts and sciences. The scholarship is awarded, if to a person fitting the latter description, independently of any application process and for one year at a time by the relevant faculty; a relative is awarded the scholarship for three years and may, upon renewed application, be granted an extension of three years.

Ländell, Mary, Åke and Hans (1985) One half of the income is used to support research into neurological diseases, especially Friedreich’s ataxia, and the other half is used to support research into diseases of the heart and blood vessels, especially relating to arterial sclerosis. Awards are made by the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Löfberg, Anna and Allan (1974) Scholarships for talented, needy students at the Faculty of Science and Technology who are studying as- tronomy and astrophysics, especially relating to the origins of planetary systems, are awarded for one year by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from a special committee and the faculty’s scholarship committee. The same student may be awarded a scholarship for at most four years.

Löwenhielm (1875) Scholarships, in the first instance for students of the noble Löwenhielm name and in the second instance for students who completed upper secondary school in Karlstad, are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for a maximum of three years.

Malm (Dr. Edvard Malm) (1942) Scholarships are provided for talented medical students of limited means who belong to the Småland stu- dent nation. The nation’s general scholarship committee submits recommendations, whereupon the na- tion’s inspector appoints the scholarship holders. The scholarships are awarded for one year at a time. The same person may hold a scholarship for a total of eight years.

Malmén (1923) Scholarships are provided for needy (especially) students at Uppsala University whose academic work and conduct are exemplary. Special preference with regard to the scholarships is enjoyed, in equal measure, by: 1) descendants of the parents of the donor, Matts Mattsson of Söder Malma, and his wife, Margareta Kris- tina Mattsdotter; 2) until the end of the year 2050, students dedicated to limnological research in Sweden, including research of a practical nature and especially relating to the Erken lake at the Norr Malma estate. The scholarships are awarded during the spring term by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommenda- tions from a special committee appointed by the Faculty of Science and Technology.

38 Malmgren, Finn (1928) Support is provided in the form of 1) prizes for scientific works, written by Swedish men/women, that may be seen in terms of “fulfilling the scientific interests and life’s work of Finn Malmgren,” i.e., relating to research into any of the following: meteorology, meteorology-related fields such as oceanography, at- mospheric electricity research, glaciography, etc., the arctic regions, Nordic mountainous regions and North Atlantic/Arctic oceans and 2) grants for practitioners of science engaging in such investigations. The prizes and grants are awarded every third year by a committee consisting of the inspector of the Västmanland-Dala student nation, the professor of meteorology and an appointee of the Faculty of Sci- ence and Technology.

Marin (1912) One or more scholarships are provided for male students who are Swedish citizens of Swedish descent on both their fathers’ and mothers’ sides and who hail from any of the following parts of Sweden: Småland, Öland, Östergötland (with the exception of Norrköping and its vicinity), Västergötland (with the excep- tion of the part belonging to Gothenburg County), Närke, Västmanland, Södermanland and Uppland (with the exception of Stockholm and its vicinity, except for applicants who are descendents of the Schmidt family, originally from Stralsund, of the old Maria family tree). Scholarship holders shall “pres- ently require treatment by a doctor or at a sanatorium but without being incurably ill, so that hope exists with regard to recovery.” Preference is enjoyed by needy relatives, who may hold scholarships for their entire time at the University. The Vice-Chancellor, on the basis of recommendations from the professor of medicine, makes any decisions with regard to awards, amounts and the periods for which scholarships are to be held.

Martin (1914) A scholarship is provided for a student – preferably a dedicated student of theology – who is the son of a priest, teacher or public servant and has completed an . Male relatives enjoy preference without regard to the aforementioned criteria. The Vice-Chancellor appoints the scholarship holder, and the scholarship may be held for two years, with extension by two years being possible upon renewed ap- plication.

Matern, von (1930) The disposable income is used to further the cause of legal scholarly writing in Sweden. No scholarship may be awarded to any person holding a regular academic position or readership.

Medicinska fakultetens (Faculty of Medicine), for psychiatric and neurological re- search (1954) Support for scientific research within the fields of psychiatry and neurology, especially in connection with functional neurology, is awarded by the Board of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy to practitioners of science who possess Swedish citizenship and are regarded as deserving on the basis of work/research within the field of psychiatry or neurology.

Melander, J (1928) A scholarship for a needy student belonging to the Västgöta student nation is awarded by the nation’s inspector and curators and two of the oldest and two younger students belonging to the nation. The scholarship may be held for at most three years.

Melanderhjelm (1793) A scholarship is provided for a talented student of mathematics, astronomy or mathematical physics. Members of the Stockholm student nation enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice- Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the faculty’s scholarship committee and may be held for three years.

39 Mellqvist, L F (1863) Scholarships are provided for dedicated students without means who belong to the Värmland student nation, with preference enjoyed by students of theology whose parents have been or are residents of the city of Karlstad. Scholarships may, given an absence of students from Karlstad who are deemed deserving, be awarded for “one or more” terms to distinguished students from elsewhere in Värmland. The scholar- ships are awarded by the nation’s inspector in consultation with its scholarship committee and may be held for two years.

Mesterton (1901) A scholarship is provided for a student of medicine, with preference enjoyed by any whose studies fo- cused especially on any of the surgical disciplines. Among those of equal merit, members of the Upland student nation enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded by the Faculty of Medicine and may be held for three years.

Metallurgical Linnaeus Foundation (1908) The disposable income is used to purchase expensive instruments or otherwise to provide support for students, doctors and readers occupied, at the general chemistry department or some other department at Uppsala University, with experimental scientific investigations of a metallurgical nature or, barring such, with experimental scientific investigations into mining studies and closely related fields. The funds are awarded by the professors of chemistry at the Faculty of Science and Technology, in mutual consultation.

Mitander (1843) Scholarships are provided for needy, dedicated students belonging to the Värmland student nation who were born in Värmland or completed upper secondary school in the . The nation’s scholarship committee submits recommendations to the inspector, who appoints the scholarship holders. The scholarships may be held for three years, with extension by two years being possible in the event of special circumstances. No scholarship may be held by a person who has attained the age of 30.

Molander (1968) Grants are awarded annually to support cancer research by researchers who have not completed advanced degrees and have been accepted to any of the postgraduate programmes at the Faculty of Medicine. Deci- sions with regard to awards are made by the postgraduate programmes committee of the Faculty of Medi- cine.

Molin (1723) Scholarships are provided, in the first instance, for relatives of the donor. Barring application by relatives, scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor to students belonging to the Västmanland-Dala student nation. The scholarships may be held for three years.

Monson (1931) A scholarship for a talented student concentrating on chemistry at the Faculty of Science and Technology is awarded annually by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the scholarship com- mittee of the Faculty of Science and Technology.

Moring (2006) One or two scholarships are provided for students occupied with energy-related research (though not having to do with nuclear power). Applicants shall have completed a degree at Uppsala University and be Swedish students, born and raised in Sweden. The scholarships are awarded by the Board of the Faculty of Science and Technology.

Murén (1884) Scholarships for needy, dedicated students belonging to the Gästrike-Hälsinge student nation are awarded by the nation’s inspector and scholarship committee and may be held for one year, with extension by one year being possible upon renewed application.

40 Myhrman (1929) A scholarship is provided for a student whose degree thesis extends to the field of Assyriology. Barring qualified applicants at Uppsala University, students at other Swedish institutions of higher learning should be considered. The scholarship is awarded annually by the Vice-Chancellor.

Måhrbeck (1942) A scholarship is provided for a student without means who belongs to the Gotland student nation and was born on Gotland. The nation’s scholarship committee recommends three applicants, whereupon the nation’s inspector appoints the scholarship holder. The scholarship is awarded for one year. No person may receive the scholarship more than three times.

Mörner (1940) A scholarship is provided for a student belonging to the Upland student nation. Applicants with qualifica- tions relating to Swedish floristics are preferred. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector and may be held for two years.

Naeslund, Gösta (1953) One or more scholarships are provided for younger researchers within the field of medical/physiological chemistry to cover costs of room and board, academic travel and research.

Nasvell, Märta and Nicke (1969) The disposable income is awarded annually or at least every other year to support research at the adult psychiatric clinics of the Faculty of Medicine at Uppsala University, preferably biologically-based research with regard to serious, long-term, mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, other de- pressive conditions and illnesses that arise due to various kinds of damage to the nervous system. The funds are awarded at the discretion of the scientific director at the department of psychiatry at Uppsala University Hospital.

Naumann, Anna and Carlson Bean (1974) The yearly disposable income is used to support researchers who have been accepted for postgraduate study at the Faculty of Medicine at Uppsala University, have not completed their postgraduate degrees and are occupied with medical research, with a special focus on diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Awards are made by the postgraduate programmes committee of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Nesselius, for Finnish students (1736) Scholarships are provided for talented, needy Finnish students, with preference enjoyed by any who are studying history, politics or statistics. The scholarships may be held for four years and extended by one or at most two years. The scholarship holders are appointed by the Vice-Chancellor.

Nilsson, Nils Erik (1945) Scholarships are provided for students who belong to the Småland student nation and are studying at the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Languages. Primary consideration is given to applicants’ academic merit and degree of need. Preference is enjoyed by applicants who are studying classical archaeology or classical languages. The inspector and senior council of the Småland student nation appoints the scholarship hold- ers. The scholarships may be held for three years.

Nilsson, Nils Erik travel scholarships (1945) Travel scholarships to support study abroad within classical archaeology by students are awarded, without regard to student nation membership, by the Faculty of Arts on the basis of recommendations from the professor of classical archaeology.

Nilsson, Sven A (1989) One or more scholarships are provided for researchers at the Department of History who have yet to complete postgraduate degrees. Special weight is accorded to demonstrated capacity for research, and consideration is primarily given to researchers focusing on periods no later than the mid-18th century. The scholarships are awarded annually during the autumn term by the department board on the basis of rec- ommendations from a committee appointed by the board.

Nilsson-Aschan family scholarships (1850)* Scholarships are provided for relatives of mining official J.L. Aschan who are studying at the country’s universities. The curator responsible for appointing scholarship holders is appointed by the Aschan family. The scholarships may be held until holders have attained the age of 28, with extension for two years being possible upon special application.

42 Nisser family scholarships (1877)* Scholarships are provided for students at any of the country’s universities and other state-run institutions of higher learning who are relatives of lieutenant colonel W.A. Nisser or counsellor of war S.C. Nisser, with preference enjoyed by any studying at Uppsala University. Scholarships are in the first instance awarded to those able to assert the closest kinship relations to the aforementioned and in the second in- stance on the basis of merit. Need shall be the determining factor among those of equal merit. The schol- arships may be held for five years and extended for at most three years. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor for one year at a time. Renewed application is made following special notice at the beginning of each academic year.

Nisser, for the Västmanland-Dala student nation (1877) Scholarships for dedicated students without means who belong to the Västmanland-Dala student nation are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector, cura- tors and senior and junior members and may be held for five years, with extension by a maximum of three years being possible.

Norberg, Isac (1817)* Scholarships are provided for needy, dedicated students belonging to the Norrland student nation “who are not already beneficiaries of comparable support.” Preference, without regard to student nation mem- bership, is enjoyed by relatives studying at Uppsala University and Lund University. The scholarship hold- ers are appointed by the nation’s inspector and representatives. Relatives may hold scholarships for their entire periods of study; non-relatives may hold scholarships for four years.

Norblad (1911) A scholarship for a deserving, needy student belonging to the Gästrike-Hälsinge student nation is awarded by the nation’s scholarship committee and may be held for two years, with extension by one year at a time, for a maximum total scholarship period of five years, being possible.

Nordlander (1842) A scholarship is provided for a student between the ages of 18 and 25 and belonging to the Norrland student nation, in the first instance for an applicant from Medelpad and in the second instance for an applicant from Ångermanland. The Vice-Chancellor appoints the scholarship holder on the basis of rec- ommendations from the nation’s senior and junior members. The scholarship may be held for four years.

Noréen, J E (1811) A scholarship for an accomplished student is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for four years.

Norén, A O (1873) A scholarship for a dedicated freshman or junior member of the Västgöta student nation who was born in Skaraborg County is awarded by the nation’s curators in consultation with its senior members and may be held for three years.

Noréus travel scholarships (1910) Scholarships for dedicated students at Uppsala University who have yet to attain the age of 25 at the time of application, for studies at foreign universities/institutions of higher learning, are awarded every other year by the Vice-Chancellor.

43 Nyberg, H S (1977) A scholarship is in the first instance provided for a younger researcher who has demonstrated exceptional scholarly talent in the course of studies at Uppsala University within any of the fields that can be regarded as falling within the category of Eastern – and particularly Middle Eastern – languages and cultures. Appli- cants shall have been accepted to postgraduate programmes or have completed doctoral degrees and thereafter continued studying with the aim of attaining the status of “reader.” In the absence of any quali- fied younger researcher, the scholarship may be awarded to a less-advanced student writing a master’s thesis. In exceptional cases, the scholarship may be split between two or at most three applicants. The scholarship is awarded every third year by a special committee as basic support or for travel. Among ap- plicants of equal merit and need, preference is enjoyed by any with connections to the Västmanland or Dalarna region.

Nyberg, J A (1893) A scholarship is provided for a student of the arts and sciences belonging to the Västgöta student nation who earned good upper-secondary-school grades in modern or classical languages, history or philosophy. Preference is enjoyed, without regard to student nation membership, faculty association or competence, by relatives. Barring application by a relative, the scholarship is awarded in the first instance to the son of a teacher at some upper secondary school in Borås and in the second instance to a student who was born in Borås or attended an upper secondary school in Borås. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship committee. A relative may hold the schol- arship for his or her entire period of study at Uppsala University; a non-relative may hold the scholarship for four years.

Nygren, O E and Emma (1970) A scholarship is provided for a student of history belonging to the Värmland student nation, with a pref- erence, among qualified applicants, for any devoted to medieval history who has shown exceptional apti- tude for research. Among applicants of equal merit or where special need obtains, relatives of the donor’s parents enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommenda- tions from the nation’s scholarship committee and may be held, if by a historian of the Middle Ages, for his or her entire period of study and otherwise for three years.

Nyman (1881) Scholarships are provided for dedicated students of medicine belonging to the Upland student nation, with preference enjoyed by any born in the City of Uppsala of middle-class heritage. The scholarships are awarded by the Faculty of Medicine and may be held for a maximum of five years.

Nyström America scholarships (1947) Scholarships are provided for registered physicians, preferably in connection with surgical studies in the United States. Scholarship holders shall at some time in the five years prior to the application deadline have been readers in surgery at Uppsala University or have served as doctors at the thoracic surgery unit or plastic surgery unit at the department of surgery. The scholarships are awarded every other year by the Board of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Nyström, G (1945) Scholarships are provided for students of medicine who have demonstrated significant talent for the medical calling while pursuing their studies in an exemplary manner. Special consideration is accorded to applicants’ financial needs, which may, at the faculty’s discretion, be granted greater weight than superior academic qualifications. Special preference is enjoyed by married applicants with children (within the mar- riage) subject to difficult circumstances. The scholarships are awarded by the Faculty of Medicine for one year at a time, and no individual may hold a scholarship for more than four years.

44 Ohné (1827) A scholarship is provided in the first instance for a student, at any of the country’s universities, who is related to J.E. Arpi, pastor of the Börstil parish. Barring application by a relative, the scholarship is awarded to an accomplished student lacking means and belonging to the Upland student nation. The na- tion’s senior members recommend three candidates, from among which the scholarship holder is ap- pointed by the drawing of lots at the general “landskap” meeting. A relative may hold the scholarship for his or her entire period of study; a non-relative may hold the scholarship for four years.

Olsson, Emil (1963) A scholarship is provided for a needy student belonging to the Östgöta student nation who has demon- strated strong aptitude for and interest in study. The nation’s senior council recommends three applicants, whereupon the nation’s inspector appoints the scholarship holder. The scholarship is awarded during the autumn term and may be held for two years.

Olsson, Petter (1891) Scholarships are provided for students belonging to the Värmland student nation who were born and completed upper secondary school in the Diocese of Karlstad. Relatives of the donor enjoy preference. Among competent applicants, preference “is enjoyed by those devoted to study of the natural sciences.” The scholarship committee of the Värmland student nation appoints scholarship holders and determines the terms for which scholarships are to be held.

Olsson-Borgh (1945) Awards are granted as follows: 1) as support for operations, maintenance and so on with regard to the Brännholmen research station in Ånn; 2) in the form of scholarships to support study-related stays by needy researchers pursuing limnological studies, especially in the Ånnsjö region; and 3) to the extent that funds are available, to reward researchers who have published meritorious work based on scientific studies relating to the Ånnsjö region.

Onämnd (Anonymous) (1918) Scholarships for needy, dedicated students of theology are awarded, independently of any application process, by the Faculty of Theology, which also determines the periods for which scholarships are to be held.

Oscar (1823) A scholarship is provided for a student known for exemplary conduct, dedication and work capacity who has attended the University for at least two terms. Any student descended from dean Kalsenius or dean Petraeus of Söderbärke or from Eric Matsson Norberg of Nordanåker in Tierp enjoys preference. The scholarship holder is appointed by the Vice-Chancellor, and the scholarship may be held for three years, with extension by one or at most two years being possible.

Oscar ll jubilee scholarship (1877) The annual income is awarded to the young scholar/scientist at Uppsala University who on the basis of scholarly/scientific writing is most deserving and represents the best hope for continued schol- arly/scientific authorship at the University. Consideration may even by extended to such work as is in- complete but has been examined and deemed by the relevant faculty to be of genuinely exceptional merit. No award, however, shall be paid for any work that fails to be completed within two years. The income may be split among equally deserving candidates. Each faculty is entitled by 15 March of each year to submit recommendations with regard to appropriate younger scholars/scientists to the preparatory com- mittee concerned with the awards. The committee, to consist of the deans of the various faculties and to be convened and chaired by the dean of the Faculty of Law, submits recommendations to the University Board, which makes the final decision with regard to the award.

45 Paasche (1943) Scholarships for Norwegian citizens under the age of 25 who are registered at any of Norway’s universities and other institutions of higher learning, to support study at Uppsala University for at least one term, are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor.

Palmaer, C and H (1900) Scholarships are provided for dedicated students who belong to the Småland student nation and either lack means or are unable to complete their studies due to illness. Any applicant asserting that a medical condition obtains shall submit a doctor’s certificate. The scholarships are awarded by the nation’s general scholarship committee and may be held for two years if by persons pursuing studies and by one year if by persons suffering from illness.

Palmaer, S (1783) A scholarship is provided for a needy student born in the Diocese of Linköping and belonging to the Östgöta student nation. Relatives enjoy preference. The nation’s inspector and senior members recom- mend three applicants, whereupon the scholarship holder is appointed by the Vice-Chancellor. The schol- arship may be held for six years.

Palmberg (1806) Scholarships are provided for dedicated students belonging to the Södermanland-Nerike student nation who were born in the Diocese of Strängnäs or any of the parishes that belonged to the Diocese of Strängnäs in 1806. Two scholarship holders should be “especially occupied with such philological studies as would serve to provide a sound basis for theology,” and two “may choose scholarly disciplines for which they are best equipped.” The scholarship holders are appointed by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector. The scholarships may be held for five years and may, upon renewed application, be extended by one year.

Palme, Olof (1918) A scholarship is provided for a scholar at Uppsala University “pursuing research aimed at illuminating ’s role within the old Swedish kingdom and its contributions to our common history and culture.” In the absence of such a scholar, all or part of the scholarship amount may be awarded to a Swedish re- searcher for published work addressing some theme from recent Finnish history. The scholarship is awarded every third year by a committee consisting of the University’s professors and readers of history, the professor of economic history, the secretary of the Historical Society and three students appointed by the committee. The committee is not restricted, in appointing the scholarship holder, to considering appli- cations received or formal qualifications.

Palmstruch (1883) A scholarship is provided for a male student. Preference is enjoyed by any studying botany or zoology. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the scholarship committee of the Faculty of Science and Technology and may be held for three years.

Persson, Axel W (1978) Travel scholarships for students and researchers within the field of ancient culture and society, intended to support travel within Greece or the Greek Middle East, especially in connection with studies at the Swed- ish Institute at Athens, are awarded annually by the professor in the field.

Pettersson, Alfred (1919) A scholarship is provided for a needy, dedicated student of theology who belongs to the Upland student nation and is a Swedish citizen born in Sweden of parents of Swedish descent. The scholarship holder is appointed by the nation’s senior members and inspector. The scholarship may be held for three years.

46 Pettersson, J, for students of theology (1894) Scholarships are provided for needy students of theology born in the Diocese of Växjö who intend to earn priestly degrees. The fund is administered by the parish of Åseda.

Pettersson, P A and A A (1937) The disposable income is used to support medical research at Uppsala University. Awards are made by the Board of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Pihlblad, Nils (1951) Scholarships are provided for students of good repute who lack means and belong to the Upland student nation, with preference enjoyed by any who earned good grades in the course of studying chemistry and thereafter for any pursuing studies at the Faculty of Science and Technology. The scholarships are awarded annually by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the scholarship commit- tee of the Upland student nation. A scholarship may be awarded to the same person for at most three years.

Piper (1719) One scholarship is provided for a student of theology, law, medicine or the arts and sciences who lacks means and another for a student of mathematics. Relatives enjoy preference. The Vice-Chancellor pro- poses scholarship holders, who are appointed by the scholarship curator, the head of the Piper family. The scholarships may be held for four years.

Piper travel scholarship (1719) Every four years, one scholarship is awarded to a student of theology, law, medicine or the arts and sci- ences who lacks means and another to a student of mathematics. Relatives enjoy preference. The Vice- Chancellor proposes scholarship holders, who are appointed by the scholarship curator, the head of the extended Piper family.

Platin, O and A (1910) Scholarships are provided for dedicated, needy students belonging to the Gothenburg student nation. The nation’s senior council recommends three applicants, from among whom the nation’s inspector appoints scholarship holders. The scholarships may be held for two years. Applicants who have previously held one of the scholarships may be considered anew but shall not enjoy preference over other applicants.

Plengiér (1944) A scholarship is provided for a needy, deserving student of medicine. Direct heirs of Lennart Plengiér, regardless of faculty associations, enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded by the Faculty of Medicine and may be held for at most five years.

Posse (1881) A scholarship for a needy, dedicated student belonging to the Stockholm student nation is awarded, inde- pendently of any application process, by the nation’s inspector and both curators.

Possieth, for the Stockholm student nation (1728) Scholarships are provided for needy students belonging to the Stockholm student nation who were born in Stockholm. Relatives, without regard to place of birth or student nation membership, enjoy preference. One scholarship is always reserved for a student of theology. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice- Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector and may be held for seven years.

Possieth, for the Upland student nation (1728) Scholarships are provided for needy students belonging to the Upland student nation who were born in the Roslagen region. Relatives, without regard to place of birth or student nation membership, always enjoy preference with regard to two scholarships. One scholarship is always reserved for a student of the- ology. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector and may be held for seven years.

47 Quensel, Florence travel scholarships (1918) Scholarships are provided for female students in connection with studies within the humanities and natu- ral sciences at British universities and other institutions of higher learning. Applicants shall have been registered at Uppsala University for the two immediately preceding academic years. Scholarship holders are obliged to stay in England/Scotland for at least four months. The scholarships are awarded during the spring term of every fourth year by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the pro- fessors of English. No person may be awarded a scholarship more than twice (consecutively).

Rapp (1942) Scholarships for needy students who belong to the Södermanland-Nerike student nation and have distin- guished themselves through talent and dedication are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor for periods of one year on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector and scholarship committee. No schol- arship may be held by the same person for more than three academic years.

Rappe (1880) Scholarships are provided for up to two direct descendents, on the male line, of the donor who are study- ing at any of the country’s universities. Barring application by any relative, scholarships are awarded in the first instance to students of theology who lack means and completed schooling at the Peter Fjellstedt Foundation in Uppsala and in the second instance to other qualified applicants. The Vice-Chancellor makes any decisions with regard to awards. Recommendations with regard to applicants who are not rela- tives are submitted by the Peter Fjellstedt Foundation. Relatives may hold scholarships for four years and may upon renewed application be granted extensions without limit. Non-relatives may hold scholarships for two years and may upon renewed application be granted extensions of two years. Non-relatives are required, upon application by relatives, to relinquish their scholarships at the end of the terms in which such application in made.

Reder (1847) Scholarships are provided for needy students of theology, medicine and law who belong to the Östgöta student nation and were born in the Diocese of Linköping. Students of theology enjoy preference with regard to two of the scholarships. Preference is also enjoyed by applicants born in Norrköping and rela- tives to the donor. The foundation is administered by the board of the diocese of the Linköping chapter.

Reenstierna (1960) A scholarship is provided for a student within the Faculty of Medicine who belongs to the Småland or Värmland student nation. Preference is enjoyed by any whose studies focus on bacteriology, virology or immunology. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the Faculty of Medicine and may be held for three years.

Regnell botanical travel scholarships (1859) Travel scholarships associated with Uppsala University and relating to botanical studies are awarded every fifth year by the Faculty of Science and Technology on the basis of recommendations from a committee consisting of representatives for botany, zoology and pharmacognosy and chaired by that professor who has served longest within a botanical field.

Regnell, major scholarships for the Faculty of Medicine (1872) Scholarships to support the study of medicine at Uppsala University are awarded by the postgraduate programmes committee of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Regnell, for students of medicine (1871) A scholarship is provided for a deserving student of medicine who has yet to attain the age of 28, with a preference, among applicants regarded as equally deserving in all respects, for one belonging to the Up- land student nation and otherwise, for the one subject to the greatest need. The scholarship holder is ap- pointed by the Faculty of Medicine. The scholarship may be held for four years, with extension by one year being possible.

48 Regnell, for the Upland student nation (1863) A scholarship is provided for a student belonging to the Upland student nation who has yet to attain the age of 28. Among applicants of equal merit, any not born in the Roslagen region should receive considera- tionA committee consisting of six senior and six junior members of the Upland student nation, elected by the nation’s senior and junior members and chaired by the inspector, who shall only have a vote in the event of a tie, recommends three applicants. The inspector appoints the scholarship holder from among the recommended candidates. The scholarship is awarded for three years and may be extended for at most one year.

Reimer (1797) A scholarship is provided for an accomplished, needy student. Members of the Östgöta and Stockholm student nations hold the scholarship by turns. Among equally qualified and needy applicants, relatives enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nations’ scholarship committees and may be held for four years.

Renström (1867) Scholarships for promising students without means are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for three years.

Rettig (1880) Scholarships for needy, dedicated students belonging to the Gästrike-Hälsinge student nation are awarded by the nation’s scholarship committee and may be held for two years, with extension by one year being possible upon renewed application.

Reuterdahl, H (1870) Scholarships are provided for needy, dedicated students of theology who have recently begun their stud- ies, with preference enjoyed by applicants whose paternal or maternal ancestors include members of the Hammarskjöld family represented by no. 135 in the Swedish House of Nobility. Scholarship holders are appointed by the Archbishop on the basis of recommendations from the Faculty of Theology. The schol- arships may be held for three years.

Rhedin (1860) A scholarship is provided for a needy, dedicated student born in the Vätle administrative county district in Älvsborg County or the Tjörns administrative county district in Bohuslän. Among equally qualified appli- cants, any born in the Vätle administrative county district enjoy preference, as do students of theology planning to enter the priesthood. In the absence of applicants meeting the aforementioned criteria, the scholarship may be awarded to some other member of the Gothenburg student nation, with a student of theology being preferred. The Vice-Chancellor appoints the scholarship holder on the basis of recom- mendations from the Gothenburg student nation. The scholarship may customarily be held for three years.

Rhyzelius (1753) A scholarship is provided for a needy, dedicated student, preferably the child of a priest, who has been registered at the University for at least one year. Relatives, without regard to student nation membership, enjoy preference. Members of the Östgöta and Västgöta student nations hold the scholarship by turns. The award is made by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the relevant nation’s scholarship committee. The scholarship may be held for three years and extended by one year.

49 Ribbing (1881) Scholarships are provided for dedicated, needy students belonging to the Värmland student nation who were born in or completed upper-secondary school in the Diocese of Karlstad or whose fathers or moth- ers were born there. Applicants who are studying classical languages, history or philosophy enjoy prefer- ence. The nation’s inspector and scholarship committee recommend three applicants, whereupon the Vice-Chancellor appoints the scholarship holders. The scholarships may be held for three years and ex- tended by one or two years upon renewed application, provided, however, that no person may be awarded or hold a scholarship upon having attained the age of 26.

Richter, Ebba (1939) Scholarships for promising students of law with limited means who belong to the Stockholm student na- tion are awarded annually be the Faculty of Law.

Riksbank Jubilee (1868) Scholarships are provided for students whose fathers are/have been employed at the Riksbank’s head offices. Barring such applicants, one of the scholarships may be awarded to a student belonging to the Stockholm student nation. Scholarship holders are appointed by the office of the Vice-Chancellor follow- ing receipt of recommendations from the inspector of the Stockholm student nation. Scholarships may be held for two years and extended by at most two years. The fund is administered by the Riksbank.

Rinman, major for the Upland student nation (1879) Scholarships are provided for needy students of medicine who belong to the Upland student nation, are studying to become doctors, preferably were born in Uppsala and are the sons of officials/civil servants. The voting members of the Upland student nation recommend three applicants, whereupon the nation’s inspector appoints scholarship holders. The scholarships may be held for four or at most five years.

Rinman, minor for the Upland student nation (1879) Scholarships are provided for needy students belonging to the Upland student nation who have distin- guished themselves through dedication and accomplishment. The voting members of the Upland student nation recommend three applicants, whereupon the nation’s inspector appoints scholarship holders. The scholarships may be held for at most four years.

Robsahm (1732) Scholarships are provided for native-born Swedish students belonging to the Church of Sweden, with a preference, with regard to one scholarship, for relatives. Preference is thereafter enjoyed by persons hail- ing in the first instance from the province of Södermanland and in the second instance from either of the Diocese of Västerås and the Diocese of Karlstad. Preference is also enjoyed by persons whose educational programmes include the Earth sciences. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for six years, with extension by three years being possible in connection with study abroad.

Rosenhane (1813) A scholarship is provided for a student “who has laid a solid foundation for the study of Swedish history and antiquity and is inclined to improve his or her knowledge within these fields.” The applicant subject to the greatest need enjoys preference among those of equal merit. The Faculty of Arts recommends three applicants, whereupon the scholarship holder is appointed by the Head of the Ministry of Justice. The scholarship may be held for as long as the holder remains a student at Uppsala University and fulfils appli- cable requirements.

50 Rubensson (1880) Scholarships for especially talented, dedicated, needy students belonging to the Gothenburg student na- tion, with preference enjoyed by any within the arts and sciences or at the Faculty of Law or Faculty of Medicine and, among equally qualified applicants, for any born in the City of Gothenburg. The nation’s senior council recommends three applicants, whereupon the inspector appoints scholarship holders. Scholarships may be held for two years, extended for an additional two years upon renewed application and, given special circumstances, thereafter extended for an additional one or two years. Notice of avail- ability is the responsibility of the first curator of the Gothenburg student nation.

Rudberg, Agnes and Mac (1964) Scholarships are awarded annually to promote research into rheumatic and allergic illnesses, in the first instance to researchers who have yet to complete postgraduate degrees at the Faculty of Medicine and in the second instance to researchers who have completed such degrees. Decisions are made by the post- graduate programmes committee for the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy and the Board of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy. The foundation is administered by Nordea.

Rudin, G A (1956) A scholarship is provided for a student belonging to the Värmland student nation, in the first instance for a relative and in the second instance for some other student belonging to the nation. Preference is enjoyed by any studying Nordic languages and English. The Vice-Chancellor awards the scholarship on the basis of recommendations from the scholarship board of the Värmland student nation. The scholarship may be held for the holder’s entire period of study, provided, however, that a non-relative is required to relinquish the scholarship in the event that a relative applies.

Rundlund (1917) Scholarships for needy, deserving students who possess good knowledge of mathematics or physics are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for two years, with extension for a maximum total of three years being possible.

Rydberg, M (1810) A scholarship is provided for a dedicated student who lacks means and belongs to the Västgöta student nation. Students of theology and medicine, preferably from Borås, hold the scholarship by turns. The scholarship is restricted to students between the ages of 20 and 25 and is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector.

Rydén (1807) A scholarship is provided for a needy student of theology who has attained the age of 21 and is preferably improving his or her knowledge of Hebrew. Members of the Gästrike-Hälsinge and Småland student nations hold the scholarship by turns. Rystedt (1856) A scholarship is provided for a needy student of, alternatingly, theology or medicine. The scholarship is awarded for three years by the Vice-Chancellor.

Rönnow prize and travel scholarships (1787) Prizes for students of anatomy are awarded every spring term by the Faculty of Medicine independently of any application process. Travel scholarships for students of medicine who represent the best hopes for future research activity, particularly within any of the theoretical disciplines belonging to the field, are awarded every spring term by the postgraduate programmes committee of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy.

51 Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (1988) Scholarships to improve opportunities for young social science researchers to attend foreign research institutions are awarded for one year at a time. No person may be awarded a scholarship for more than three years. Application is open to any person who 1) has completed a doctoral degree at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Uppsala University, 2) holds a position connected to some department within the Fac- ulty of Social Sciences or 3) has received a research grant linked to some department within the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Schedin, Edvin and Märta (1986) The disposable income is used to defray costs associated with cancer research. Awards are made by the postgraduate programmes committee of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Scheven, von (1948) A scholarship for a student of theology without means who belongs to the Västmanland-Dala student nation is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship committee and may be held for the scholarship holder’s entire period of study.

Schimmelpfennig, C F V (1925) Funding is provided 1) in the first instance, to support education in pharmaceutical chemistry and galeni- cal pharmacy, 2) in the second instance, to support education in social pharmacy and 3) to cover costs, in whole or in part, of scholarly travel on the part of teachers at the faculty, where such travel has been deemed by the board of the Faculty of Pharmacy to be of decided value for the educational programme. Awards are made by the Board of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Schlachter (1950) Scholarships for needy students of theology are awarded annually by the Faculty of Theology and may be extended upon renewed application for one or two years.

Schubert, Nils and Märta (1965) Funding is provided to support medical science and research at Uppsala University, with a special focus on diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Awards are made by a committee consisting of the dean of the Faculty of Medicine and two persons appointed by the Vice-Chancellor, of whom one shall represent the interests of clinical-physiological research at the University.

Selggren (1893) Scholarships for needy students known for good conduct and scholarly inclination who belong to the Gästrike-Hälsinge student nation are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector and may be held of three years, with extension by an additional two years being possible.

Sellberg (1944) A scholarship for a needy, dedicated, talented student belonging to the Västmanland-Dala nation is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s senior council and may customarily be held for three years.

53 Sernander (1931) The disposable income is awarded to support research within the following fields: 1) botany, especially with a focus on plant geography, (including plant sociology), ecology, ecological morphology and lichen- ology; 2) Quaternary geology, especially with a focus on research related to peat moss, the history of flora, fauna and climate, soil genetics and soil studies; and 3) cultural history, including field archaeology, the history of horticulture and the history of Linnaeus and extending to investigations into the preservation of nature and local monuments. Research scholarships are awarded to students and researchers at Uppsala University for research-related travel within/without Sweden, for field and laboratory equipment and to cover processing costs. Awards are made annually by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommenda- tions from a special committee.

Sernskjöld (1795) A scholarship is provided for a dedicated student preferably belonging to the Västmanland-Dala student nation and dedicated particularly to the study of the Latin language. Relatives enjoy preference. The schol- arship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for six years.

Sjöberg (1948) Scholarships for deserving students without means who belong to the Västgöta student nation are awarded by the nation’s scholarship committee and may be held for two years.

Sjöbring general (1825) Scholarships are provided for needy students of classical and Semitic languages. In connection with awards made to students of Semitic languages, Hebrew shall be included. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for three years.

Sjöbring, for the Småland student nation (1825) Two scholarships are provided for needy students of classical and Semitic languages. In connection with awards made to students of Semitic languages, Hebrew shall be included. The scholarships are awarded to members of the Småland student nation by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s general scholarship committee and may be held for three years.

Sjödahl (1890) A scholarship for a dedicated student of theology without means who belongs to the Upland student na- tion is awarded by the nation’s inspector and may be held for three years.

Sjögren (1806) A scholarship is provided for a needy student of theology belonging to the Småland student nation who has been studying for two or three years, has attained the age of 22, intends to serve as a priest in the Dio- cese of Växjö and is the son/daughter of a farmer or priest from the Diocese of Växjö. Preference is en- joyed by any who completed upper secondary school in Växjö and especially any who pursued study there for four consecutive years. The scholarship may, barring application by the son/daughter of a farmer or priest, be awarded to an applicant who fulfils the other criteria. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice- Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s senior council and may be held for two years.

Sjöman, Carl Birger (1934) A scholarship for a well-mannered, needy person studying at Uppsala University to become a pharmacist is awarded by the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Sjöström, Monica (2000) Support is provided for research at the Faculty of Medicine at Uppsala University. The foundation pursues its aims by awarding prizes to young researchers. The prizes are awarded by the Board of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy.

54 Skarstedt (1877) A scholarship is provided for a member of the Gothenburg student nation. Students of theology enjoy preference on every other occasion of award. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation and may be held for two years.

Skoglund, Frida and Karl (1959) The donation is intended to support research into rheumatic and allergic illnesses; grants are awarded by the Faculty of Medicine.

Sleincour (1784) A scholarship for an accomplished, needy student belonging to the Östgöta student nation is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s inspector and may be held for three years.

Smith (1968) Scholarships are provided, in the first instance for Indological language research, in the second instance relating to other periods in the development of the Indian languages than the Sanskrit Period and in the third instance relating to such comparative research into Indo-European languages as may be pursued with regard to the Germanic, Roman and Celtic languages. The scholarships are awarded in connection with study towards undergraduate degrees, postgraduate study, post-doctoral work and scholarly travel. Awards are made by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the Faculty of Lan- guages.

Sollenius (1725) Scholarships for needy, accomplished students, with preference enjoyed by 1) those of noble birth, espe- cially those belonging to the Tilas family or to the oldest and most closely related family to the last of the Tilas family, 2) registered members of the Upland student nation who are sons/daughters of priests born in Fjärdhundra, 3) alternatingly, registered members of the Norrland student nation who are sons/daughters of middle-class parents born in any of Enköping, Sigtuna, Öregrund, Östhammar and Norrtälje and registered members of the Upland student nation who are sons/daughters of middle-class parents born in Härnösand and 4) persons from Lapland who are the sons/daughters of Sami parents. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may not be awarded to applicants who have attained the age of 25, except in the case of awards made to sons/daughters of Sami parents, which may be awarded to applicants who have attained the age of 25. The scholarships may be held for seven years.

Sparfelt (1695) Scholarships are provided for needy students, with preference enjoyed by relatives. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice Chancellor and may be held for six years.

Sparre, G A (1917) Scholarships are provided for needy, male students who belong to the Stockholm, Västgöta or Väst- manland-Dala student nation, with preference enjoyed by applicants who earned diplomas from the Södra Latin upper secondary school in Stockholm or who hail from the any of the parishes of Norra Fågelås, Husaby, Ova and Skälvum in Västergötland or the Nedan judicial district in the Dalarna region. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for three years.

Stagnell (1853) A scholarship is provided for a dedicated, needy student belonging to the Norrland student nation and born in the Diocese of Härnösand or the Diocese of Luleå. The nation’s scholarship committee makes recommendations, which shall be approved by the inspector, whereupon the Vice-Chancellor appoints the scholarship holder. The scholarship may be held for three years, with extension by one or two years being possible.

55 Stahre, Ludvig (1909) Scholarships for students who intend to earn pharmacist’s degrees at Uppsala University and have demon- strated significant dedication and knowledge of pharmaceutical chemistry are awarded every other year by the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Stalin (1921) Scholarships are provided for licentiates of arts belonging to the Västgöta student nation, to meet the costs of printing doctoral dissertations. The scholarship holders are paid the entire disposable amount pertaining to the year in question. Barring application by applicants meeting the above criteria, scholar- ships are awarded to dedicated bachelors of theology or arts who intend to pursue licentiate degrees and who belong to the nation; such scholarships may be held for two years, with extension by one year being possible. Scholarship holders are appointed by the nation’s inspector in consultation with the nation’s senior council.

Starbäck (1876) One or more scholarships for students who have demonstrated “exceptional progress in the study of his- tory” are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Sciences and may be held for three years, with extension by one year being possible.

Stave (1922) Scholarships for students of theology who have demonstrated outstanding insight with regard to Old Testament exegesis are awarded, independently of any application process, during the spring term by the Faculty of Theology on the basis of recommendations from the professor of Old Testament exegesis. The scholarships may be held for three years.

Stavenow (1929) Scholarships for talented, dedicated, needy students who have been members of the Stockholm student nation for at least one year and completed upper secondary school studies within five years (excluding compulsory military service) of the application deadline are awarded by the nation’s senior council on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship committee and may be held for three years.

Stecksén-Norberg (1831) Scholarships are provided for dedicated students belonging to the Norrland student nation who were born and raised in any of the counties of Norrbotten, Västerbotten, Västernorrland and Jämtland. Appropriate consideration may be taken of the financial condition of otherwise equally qualified applicants. The schol- arships may not be held concurrently with any other scholarship provided through the nation. The na- tion’s scholarship committee recommends three candidates, whereupon scholarship holders are appointed by the Vice-Chancellor. The scholarships may be held for three years.

Steen, Lars and Ingegerd (1996) Scholarships for deserving, needy students who belong to the Upland or Norrland student nation are awarded annually by the Vice-Chancellor. A scholarship may be awarded to the same person for at most two years.

Stenberg (1867) A scholarship is provided for a dedicated student between the ages of 18 and 25 who belongs to the Got- land student nation. The nation makes recommendations, whereupon the inspector appoints the scholar- ship holder. The scholarships may be held for three years.

Stenberger, Mårten (1985) Funding is provided to promote scholarly/scientific research within Northern European archaeology; support may be provided for a variety of types of research projects, scholarly travel or to promote interna- tional research contacts. Grants are awarded in accordance with the decisions of a special committee chaired by the professor of archaeology.

56 Stenhammar (1836) Scholarships are provided for students under the age of 25 who belong to the Östgöta student nation, have been registered at the University for at least two terms and have earned reputations for “serious in- clinations for literary learning and scholarly/scientific progress” Relatives enjoy preference. The scholar- ships are awarded by the nation’s inspector on the basis of recommendations by the nation’s scholarship committee and may be held for four years, with extension of one or two years being possible in connec- tion with travel abroad.

Stenholm, Ture travel scholarships (1963) Scholarships are provided for medical doctors who have earned their degrees at Uppsala University and thereafter attained significant surgical training, to support surgical studies, including within specialised surgical fields, in any of , Austria and Switzerland. The scholarships are awarded every other year by the Board of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy on the basis of recommendations from the pro- fessor of surgery.

Stenholm, Wilgott travel scholarships (1967) A maximum of three scholarships for students at the Faculty of Science and Technology at Uppsala Uni- versity, for scholarly travel within Europe in connection with educational purposes, are awarded by the faculty every other year.

Svensson, Aron (1933) A scholarship is provided for a talented postgraduate student or recent doctorate for work completed while a postgraduate student. Researchers within the fields of physics and physical chemistry hold the scholarship by turns. The scholarship is awarded, independently of any application process, by the schol- arship committee of the Faculty of Science and Technology on the basis of recommendations from the professors of physics and physical chemistry. The foundation is administered by Stockholm University.

Svensson-Bissmarck (1886) A scholarship is provided for a student who belongs to the Småland student nation and was born in the Diocese of Växjö. Relatives enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded by the nation’s senior council and may be held for three years.

Swahn (1920) Scholarships for talented students of theology with good habits who belong to the Upland student nation are awarded annually by the nation’s senior council. A scholarship may be awarded to the same person for at most three years.

61 Sylvén (1917)* Scholarships are provided for the most needy of the dedicated students of medicine belonging to the Västgöta student nation. Preference, without regard to student nation membership, is enjoyed by appli- cants who are studying to become doctors, have informed Church of Sweden Mission of their interest in future service within the mission organisation and have been deemed appropriate candidates for mission- ary work by the mission organisation. The faculty of medicine appoints any scholarship holders who have not applied to become candidates for missionary work; with respect to any recipients who have so applied, the director of Church of Sweden Mission awards the scholarships, which may also be awarded to stu- dents at Lund University and Karolinska Institute, though preference is enjoyed, with respect to one of the scholarships, by students at Uppsala University. The scholarships may be held for one year and ex- tended for at most two years. Scholarship holders appointed by the director of Church of Sweden Mission may hold scholarships until they have completed their medical degrees.

Söderblom, Nathan and Anna (1932) Scholarships are provided, in the first instance, for any direct descendents of Anna and Nathan Söderblom who are studying at Uppsala University. Scholarships are provided, in the second instance, to postgraduate students and un-promoted teachers at the Faculty of Theology. The scholarships are awarded by the Fac- ulty of Theology.

The scholarships are awarded annually be the faculty’s scholarship committee.

Thun (1731) Scholarships are provided for needy students who have attained the age of 20 and were born in Stockholm or Småland. Applicants shall have been registered at Uppsala University for at least two years. Relatives of the donor enjoy preference. Scholarships may be awarded to students at any faculty except that of medi- cine and may be held for two years, with extension by at most two years being possible upon renewed application. The scholarship holders are appointed on the basis of recommendations from the rector of Borgrättsfonderna in Stockholm, which administers the foundation.

Thuréus, Sven and Lilly, for general odontology (1966) Support is provided for research with regard to the teeth, jaws and oral cavity, considered broadly, and with regard to associated problems, including preventive medicine and cures for diseases. Tingsten (1932) A scholarship is provided for a dedicated, needy student belonging to the Småland student nation who was born in Jönköping County and who completed his or her last two years of upper secondary school there. Applicants shall have been registered members of the Småland student nation for at least two years, during which time they shall have been students at Uppsala University. The scholarship is awarded every spring term by the nation’s inspector and general scholarship committee.

Tollsten, for the Norrland student nation (1754) A scholarship is provided for a needy, dedicated student belonging to the Norrland student nation and born in Ångermanland. Tranér reader scholarships (1825) Scholarships are provided for PhDs at Uppsala University who either lack permanent employment or lack financing in connection with such employment. Applicants who have studied classical languages at univer- sities or other institutions of higher learning enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation and may be held for three years.

Waern (1862) A scholarship is provided for a needy, dedicated student who belongs to the Värmland student nation, was born in the Diocese of Karlstad and completed upper secondary school there. Preference is enjoyed, in the event of any shortage of priests in the Diocese of Karlstad, by any person preparing to serve as a priest in that diocese. The scholarship is awarded by the nation’s scholarship committee and may be held for three years.

Wahlberg-Engelbrecht (1873) Scholarships are provided for needy, dedicated, male students belonging to the Östgöta student nation. Needy, male relatives, without regard to student nation membership, enjoy preference. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship com- mittee and may be held for at most three years.

Wahlin memorial (1936) Scholarships are provided for needy students belonging to the Östgöta student nation, with a preference with regard to one scholarship for applicants needing medical care and able to provide doctors’ certifi- cates. The scholarships are awarded annually by the nation’s scholarship committee. The same person may be awarded a scholarship for at most three years.

Wahlund (1893) Scholarships are provided for postgraduate students and readers at the Department of Romance Lan- guages, in the first instance to support academic travel, study at Uppsala University and the publication of scholarly work. In determining awards, the prospects and financial need of applicants is taken into account in addition to their qualifications. The scholarships are awarded during the autumn term by the Faculty of Languages on the basis of recommendations from the professor of romance languages.

Wallberg (1874) Scholarships are provided for needy, dedicated students of theology who belong to the Gothenburg stu- dent nation and were born in the Diocese of Gothenburg, with preference enjoyed by any who, at birth, belonged to the parish of Frillesås or Värö or the Falkenberg town parish or who, although born in some other parish in the Diocese of Gothenburg, have parents who were consistently resident for a significant time in one of the aforementioned places. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation and may be held for three years.

Wallin, August (1931) Scholarships are provided for needy, male students of medicine who were born in Gothenburg and com- pleted upper secondary school there. Applicants shall be registered members of the Gothenburg student nation and have studied medicine for at least two years. The Faculty of Medicine shall award the scholar- ships, which may be held for five years.

Wallin, Charlotta (1923) A scholarship is provided for a talented, needy student who will be serving as a priest within the Church of Sweden or its mission field. Students belonging to the Västgöta student nation enjoy preference. The Faculty of Theology appoints the scholarship holder on an annual basis.

Wallin, husband and wife (1948) Scholarships are provided for dedicated, needy students, with preference enjoyed by applicants from the parishes of Österlövsta and Tegelsmora. The scholarships are awarded for one year at a time by the Vice- Chancellor. The same person may, upon renewed application, receive a scholarship for at most four years.

Wallinder, August (1967) One half is awarded to aid persons suffering from serious sight deficiencies or long-term, severe diseases of the eye, and the other half to support research with regard to glaucoma. Awards are made by the Board of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy on the basis of recommendations from the professor of oph- thalmology.

Wallmark (1847) A scholarship is provided for an accomplished, needy “younger academic educator.” Three applicants are recommended by the University’s scholarship committee and Vice-Chancellor, whereupon the scholarship council appoints scholarship holders. The scholarships may be held for three years.

Walters (1827) A scholarship is provided for a needy, accomplished student belonging to the Upland student nation. Preference is accorded relatives, persons of “non-noble military standing from the Royal Uppland Regi- ment” and “the sons of rural civil servants, farmers, crofters and handicraftsmen but by no means the sons of priests.” The scholarship holder should “assiduously study all of the academic fields, especially, ethics, philosophy, mathematics, law, the natural sciences and some medicine.” The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the Upland student nation and may be held for three years, with extension for two years being possible if the scholarship holder has been accepted to a postgraduate programme.

Wasenius (1914) Scholarships are provided for male students without means whose exceptional talent gives rise to espe- cially strong hopes. Relatives of the donor’s father, Pehr Persson of Ista, Vassunda, enjoy preference. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for two years, with extension by one year being possible upon renewed application and with the total time for which any scholarship is held not to exceed 10 years.

The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship committee and may be held for three years.

Wennermark (1860) A scholarship is provided for a needy, dedicated student belonging to the Värmland student nation. The nation’s scholarship committee recommends three applicants, whereupon the nation’s inspector appoints the scholarship holder. The scholarship may be held for three years and be extended, upon renewed appli- cation, by two years. The scholarship may not be held beyond the scholarship holder’s having attained the age of 30.

Wessler, Erland (1973) One or more scholarships for doctoral students working on biochemical projects at the Faculty of Medi- cine in Uppsala are awarded by the postgraduate programmes committee of the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Westin, Ellen and Tage (1979)* Funding is available to support such research within the fields of economics and biology as is important for the development of agriculture. Grants from the foundation may be provided for research at Uppsala University or the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Grants are awarded by a committee consist- ing of five members, of whom three are from Uppsala University and two from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

Westling, R (1928) One or two scholarships linked to the field of pharmacognosy, for students within the pharmacists’ pro- gramme who have evidenced especially good knowledge of and interest in the subject and completed publishable studies within the field during the calendar year, are awarded by the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Westman, K G (1918) Scholarships are provided for male students belonging to the Östgöta student nation who have shown talent for scholarship/science. Barring application by competent members of the Östgöta student nation, scholarships may be awarded to male students belonging to any of the other student nations. Preference is enjoyed by applicants who intend to use scholarships to meet costs in connection with special schol- arly/scientific investigations or the printing of scholarly/scientific work. The scholarships are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the inspector of the Östgöta student nation. The same person may be awarded a scholarship for at most three years.

Westman, O (1876) Scholarships are provided for needy, dedicated, male students belonging to the Västgöta student nation who completed upper secondary school in Skara. The scholarships are especially intended for students of the arts and sciences and medicine, particularly any who are the sons of priests. The scholarship holders are appointed by the nation’s inspector and first curator, and the scholarships may be held for three years.

Wijk, Olof O:son, for botany (1896) Scholarships are provided for talented, dedicated, needy students for botanical studies, with a preference, among those of equal merit, for members of the Gothenburg student nation. The scholarship holders are appointed by that professor of botany who has served the longest and in accordance with recommenda- tions from the members of the botanical section of Naturvetenskapliga studentsällskapet (the society of students of the natural sciences) and the section’s chairperson. The scholarships may be held for three years, with extension by one year being possible.

Applicants who have demonstrated progress in study- ing demotic script enjoy preference. The scholarships are awarded every third year by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the professor of Egyptology and the Faculty of Arts.

Wärend prize (1882) Scholarships for students who belong to the Småland student nation and are known for dedication and good conduct are awarded, independently of any application process, each spring term by the nation’s inspector. The same person may be awarded a scholarship twice.

Zedritz (1732) A scholarship is provided for a student without means who belongs to the Upland student nation. Rela- tives, without regard to student nation membership, enjoy preference. The scholarship is awarded by the Vice-Chancellor on the basis of recommendations from the nation’s scholarship committee and may be held for five years.

Zennström (2008) One or more scholarships for research and development within the field of textile history are awarded each year by a committee.

Zetterling prize (1872) Prizes are awarded to students and teachers at Uppsala University for writings of a philosophical, prefera- bly religio-philosophical, nature published within the previous six years. In the absence of any philosophi- cal writings deemed worthy of recognition, prizes may be awarded for other writings.

Zorn, Emma (1938) A scholarship is provided for a deserving student without means who belongs to the Västmanland-Dala student nation. The nation’s senior council recommends three ranked applicants, whereupon the Vice- Chancellor appoints the scholarship holder. The scholarship may be held for at most four years.

Åbergsson (1934)* Scholarships are provided for female students of law at any of the country’s universities who have demon- strated talent for and interest in the study of law, with preference enjoyed by the daughters of judges of the Supreme Court. The scholarships are intended for postgraduate students but may in the absence of such be awarded to students imminently expected to complete bachelor of laws degrees. The scholarships are awarded by the Faculty of Law each year during the month of May. Consideration is not restricted to submitted applications. The scholarships may and should be awarded to the same individuals for a num- ber of years.

Ågren, Kurt (1990) Scholarships are provided for two deserving, promising students who have completed C-level papers at the Department of History during the antecedent two years. The scholarships are awarded, independently of any application process, by the department board on the basis of recommendations from such teachers as have taught at the C level during the two years that have elapsed since the last round of awards.

Åkerham, Lilly and Ragnar (1982) The foundation’s funds are used in the first instance to further clinical research at Uppsala University Hospital with regard to asthma and allergic illnesses. In the second instance, the foundation’s income may be used to support other clinical research for which funding is lacking in spite of such research’s acknowl- edged exceptional significance. The income is used to provide both scholarships and research grants, which are awarded by the postgraduate programmes committee of the Faculties of Medicine and Phar- macy.

Ånarsson, Raine (1991) One or more scholarships for students of law “who have demonstrated their suitability for study” and belong to the Västmanland-Dala student nation are awarded by the Vice-Chancellor and may be held for three years.

Ångström prize (1884) A prize aimed at encouraging beneficial work within the field of physics by a postgraduate student or re- cent doctorate for work completed during his or her time as a postgraduate student is awarded, independ- ently of any application process, by the scholarship committee of the Faculty of Science and Technology on the basis of recommendations from the professors of experimental physics programmes I, II and III. The prize may be split among two or at most three proposed recipients. The same person may receive the prize twice, though not for the same work.

Åqvist (1941) Scholarships are provided for such needy members of the Södermanland-Nerike student nation as have been registered with the nation for at least two terms and demonstrated their exceptional desert through academic accomplishment. The nation’s inspector appoints scholarship holders on the basis of recom- mendations from the nation’s scholarship committee. The scholarships may be held for two years, with extension by one year being possible.

Ärkestiftets (Archdiocese) (1930) A scholarship is provided for a talented student of theology who lacks means. Preference is enjoyed by anyone who is the son/daughter of a priest from the Archdiocese or the City of Stockholm, is successfully pursuing theological or religious studies and intends to apply to enter the priesthood within the Archdio- cese. The scholarship holder is appointed by the Archbishop on the basis of recommendations from the Faculty of Theology. The scholarship may be held for three years, with extension by an additional two years being possible.
