The film and music program, announced today, features some of the most talented filmmakers and music acts on the verge of breaking out. Tickets ($15-25) go on sale to Sundance Institute members today and all others tomorrow at sundance.org/next. Sundance NEXT FEST will present the Los Angeles premieres of six films from the 2015 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. Five films screen at the Theatre at Ace Hotel, paired with either a special music performance that embodies a shared artistic sensibility or with a special conversation between the filmmakers and the luminaries who inspired them and who will be announced later this summer. Last year’s special guests included Werner Herzog, writer Bret Easton Ellis and filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn. The Sundance Film Festival programming staff selected the films and music acts for NEXT FEST. On August 2, the weekend before the festival, things kick off with the Los Angeles premiere of Cop Car with Cinespia at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. In Cop Car, Kevin Bacon plays a small-town Sheriff setting out to find the boys who have taken his car on a dangerous joyride. The outdoor screening under the stars will feature food trucks and a themed Cinespia Photo Booth. All ticket proceeds go to the non-profit Sundance Institute. John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “Los Angeles is home to a huge audience of people on the cutting edge of what’s new and next in film and music. Our Sundance NEXT FEST was born as an experiment to showcase this and offer LA audiences a slice of Sundance in the summer.” 2 Trevor Groth, Director of Programming for the Sundance Film Festival, said, “The lineup for this year’s Sundance NEXT FEST is full of some of the freshest voices in independent film, bursting with new energy, style and attitude. Pairing three of these films with equally charged music acts will make for an absolutely explosive weekend for indie fans.” Members who support the non-profit Sundance Institute have access to a host of benefits related to Sundance NEXT FEST, including the ability to purchase tickets today, before they go on sale to the general public tomorrow. At the August 2 Cop Car screening with Cinespia at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, members will enjoy a reserved seating section and other benefits while supporting the Institute’s mission of connecting artists with audiences. Members are also invited to a special party during Sundance NEXT FEST and are eligible to win a prize package including a three-night stay at the Ace Hotel plus airfare. To join, visit sundance.org/membership. To celebrate the announcement of the lineup, Sundance NEXT FEST is co-hosting a special screening tonight of Tangerine at the Theatre at Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles, cohosted by Magnolia Pictures, Outfest and Ace Hotel DTLA. Tangerine, a breakout at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, is a rip-roaring comedy that follows a working girl tearing through Tinseltown on Christmas Eve searching for the pimp who broke her heart. The screening will be followed by a special DJ set by Little Boots. Sundance NEXT FEST is an extension of the popular NEXT section at the Sundance Film Festival, which showcases stylistically adventurous and bold films, and launched films including Obvious Child, Compliance, Appropriate Behavior, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night and Escape from Tomorrow. This will mark the festival’s third year in Los Angeles. Sundance NEXT FEST is supported by Principal Sponsors – Acura and Adobe; Major Sponsor – Kickstarter; Media Sponsor – KCRW; and Supporting Sponsors – Beachside Films, Dolby, FilmL.A., Inc., ShopHouse, Skullcandy®, Southwest Airlines, Stella Artois®, The Theatre at Ace Hotel and the Utah Film Commission. • Gregg Turkington on What He Learned from Punk Rock
June 13, 2017 - Gregg Turkington is best known for his "anti-comedy" character, Neil Hamburger. The Australian actor co-stars in the film review web series "On Cinema at the Cinema" with Tim Heidecker and is the co-writer and co-star of the Adult Swim series, Decker. He had a part in the 2015 film Ant-Man, and that same year, starred in Entertainment, a drama he co-wrote. In the 1990s, he ran the music label, Amarillo Records, and played in bands like Caroliner, Zip Code Rapists, Faxed Head, and has released a number of albums as Neil Hamburger, mostly on the Chicago independent music label, Drag City. He contributed artwork and live recordings to Flipper's Public Flipper Limited Live 1980-1985. As told to Charlie Sextro, 2383 words. Tags: Culture, Music, Comedy, Inspiration, Beginnings, Independence. Gregg Turkington on what he learned from punk rock I’m interested to hear how your fascination with showmanship began. As a kid, how interested were you in entertainment? Super interested. Initially really with music, and then I got more into movies. I was a complete obsessive about all the things I liked. I grew up in Tempe, Arizona. I was really into Phil Ochs. He was my absolute idol. I was really into the Bee Gees and The Who. Then I got really into a revival, repertoire theater, The Valley Art. It was like $2 or something and I would pretty much go to any movie that was playing, to see what was going on. Then when I saw something that interested me, I would go over to the campus at ASU.

Using a mix of actors and non-actors, the small crew used documentary techniques to give the experience of a true story unfolding in real time. Often filming in four to five locations a day and using a script in which specific dialogue was scarce but the intention for each scene was detailed, actors improvised fully in the moment to allow their characters to develop naturally. What resulted was a team in-sync and fully ready to capture the chaotic world around them. 49 west 27th street 7th floor new york, ny 10001 tel 212 924 6701 fax 212 924 6742 www.magpictures.com 1. With roles in “Us”, “Eastbound & Down”, “Awesome Show”, “Portlandia” and more, Mr. Heidecker has helped to affect the comedy landscape for years to come. As a co-creator of On Cinema and its ensuing worlds with Gregg Turkington, he’s been able to prod at multiple facets of society.

  • Their Generation New Traditions in American Independent Filmmaking
MOVIES MARCH 23, 2015 ISSUE Their Generation New traditions in American independent filmmaking. BY RICHARD BRODY The cinematographer Sean Price Williams films Kentucker Audley in Charles Poekel’s film “Christmas, Again.” CREDIT COURTESY CHARLES POEKEL While showcasing fresh talent from around the world, this year’s edition of the “New Directors/New Films” series (held jointly at Film Society of Lincoln Center and MOMA, March 18-29) also spotlights major trends in American independent filmmaking. Charles Poekel’s first feature, “Christmas, Again” (March 24 and March 28), is the kind of unflinching yet tender New York sidewalk story that risks becoming a cliché of downbeat naturalism. It’s about a lonely young man—too aptly named Noel—who gets drawn into sentimental adventures while selling Christmas trees on the frigid streets of Greenpoint. Yet Poekel skirts this risk, and creates a minor marvel of quasi-documentary discovery, by way of a method that is at the core of contemporary independent filmmaking—bringing together a cast and crew of young independent-film regulars. Noel is played by Kentucker Audley, a director as well as an actor (Amy Seimetz’s “Sun Don’t Shine”). Lydia, a young woman whom Noel shelters in his trailer, is played by Hannah Gross, who, at twenty-two, has already acted in films by Matt Porterfield, Nathan Silver, and Dustin Guy Defa. Poekel’s crew is headed by the cinematographer Sean Price Williams and the editor Robert Greene (the director of “Actress”), who have worked on some of the best recent independent films, including “Listen Up Philip.” Poekel’s cast and crew are, in effect, a movie-in-a-box—just add a director and an idea—and they realize Poekel’s sense of lived-in, firsthand experience.

It had become apparent that Screen Studies, as a track, was a small and insular part of the school; where other tracks often had to work together on projects, culminating in something that could proudly be shared with the student body, Screen Studies had nothing of the sort. The initial goals for the quarterly were this: increase our presence within the school and strengthen our community with the pride that comes from having a work published and accessible. This is the first edition of the Screen Studies Quarterly, and with that our initial goals will be accomplished. So, then what next? The track has its thesis, but smaller assignments and extracurricular work go into the æther, to disappear until a source needs to be re-quoted in a new context—cut-and-pasted into the next work in the next class.

SEASON 1 NOW STREAMING CONTINUOUSLY ON ADULTSWIM.COM WATCH SEASON 2 TRAILER - http://youtu.be/3AlrLjDNb5Q Next Monday, March 9th sees the premiere of season 2 of AdultSwim.com’s Decker, the hit web series conceived as an ego-driven vehicle for On Cinema At The Cinema's multi-talented host, Tim Heidecker. Fed up with the dearth of movies featuring true American heroes capable of getting the job done, Tim has created the unforgettable character of Agent Jack Decker, who battles terrorism and Washington D.C. bureaucracy in a constant fight for freedom and family values. In the much-expanded second season, Decker fights to free ineffectual President Davidson (Hollywood veteran Joe Estevez) and to save the island of Hawaii from a Taliban takeover. Aided by easily-distracted CIA code-breaker Kington (On Cinema's Gregg Turkington) and up against a new cast of local Hawaiian bad guys, Tim will have to utilize every talent in his bag of tricks-- from music, zip lining and paragliding--to save America. The beautiful settings ensure that suspense, action, and adventure have never looked so good!
