Bamcinématek and Tribeca Film Present the New York Theatrical Premiere of Rick Alverson’S the Comedy, Nov 16—22 BAMcinématek and Tribeca Film present the New York theatrical premiere of Rick Alverson’s The Comedy, Nov 16—22 Alverson & Tim Heidecker in person “A dark, determinedly abrasive study.”—Justin Chang, Variety The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor for BAMcinématek and BAM Rose Cinemas. Brooklyn, NY/Oct 19, 2012—From Friday, November 16 through Thursday, November 22, BAMcinématek and Tribeca Film present the New York theatrical premiere of Rick Alverson’s The Comedy, a fearlessly provocative, acerbic, pitch-black portrait of a privileged Brooklynite played by a razor-sharp Tim Heidecker (Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!) in his first dramatic role. Heidecker and Alverson will be in attendance for evening Q&As on Friday, November 16 and Saturday, November 17. On the cusp of inheriting his father's estate, Swanson (Heidecker) is a man with unlimited options. An aging hipster in Brooklyn, he spends his days in aimless recreation with like- minded friends (Tim & Eric co-star Eric Wareheim, LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy, and comedian Gregg Turkington a.k.a.“Neil Hamburger”) in games of comic irreverence and mock sincerity. As Swanson grows restless of the safety a sheltered life offers him, he tests the limits of acceptable behavior, pushing the envelope in every way he can. Heidecker’s deadpan delivery cleverly masks a deep desire for connection and sense in the modern world. Desensitized and disenchanted, he strays into a series of reckless situations that may offer the promise of redemption or the threat of retribution. The Comedy wears its name on its sleeve, but director Rick Alverson's powerful and provocative character study touches upon a darkness behind the humor that resonates with viewers long after the story ends. A scathing look at the white male on the verge of collapse and a carefully observed portrait of privilege, Alverson’s film provokes and disorients, creating a trenchant fable for the autumn of the American Era. Crisply lensed by independent DP Mark Schwartzbard (Think of Me) and produced by independent record label Jagjaguwar (the label backed Alverson’s previous features New Jerusalem and The Builder), The Comedy features an eerie, atmospheric, and poignant soundtrack, which Alverson worked with the label to create: bittersweet and mystic pop songs featuring artists from the present (GAYNGS, Gardens & Villa, Here We Go Magic) and the past (Donnie & Joe Emerson, Bill Fay, Amanaz), plus William Basinski's Disintegration Loops, a minimalist looped melody drone of decaying magnetic tape. A darkly affecting satire of our current anesthetized generation, The Comedy—which premiered to great acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival and was a hit at this year’s BAMcinemaFest with two sold-out screenings—has drawn comparisons to Fellini’s La Dolce Vita and von Trier’s The Idiots. “An epic display of the over-privileged, eternally adolescent white American male behaving badly.”—David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter “Transgressively brilliant… an itchy critique of entitlement.”—Aaron Hillis, The Village Voice “A powerful generational statement.”—Eric Kohn, Indiewire Rick Alverson and Tim Heidecker are available for interviews. In July 1999, beginning with a series celebrating the work of Spike Lee, BAMcinématek was born as Brooklyn’s only daily, year-round repertory film program. BAMcinématek presents new and rarely seen contemporary films, classics, work by local artists, and festivals of films from around the world, often with special appearances by directors, actors, and other guests. BAMcinématek has not only presented major retrospectives by major filmmakers such as Michelangelo Antonioni, Manoel de Oliveira, Shohei Imamura, Vincente Minnelli (winning a National Film Critics’ Circle Award prize for the retrospective) Kaneto Shindo, Luchino Visconti, , but it has also introduced New York audiences to contemporary artists such as Pedro Costa and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. In addition, BAMcinématek programmed the first US retrospectives of directors Arnaud Desplechin, Nicolas Winding Refn, Hong Sang-soo, and, most recently, Andrzej Zulawski. From 2006 to 2008, BAMcinématek partnered with the Sundance Institute and in June 2009 launched BAMcinemaFest, a 16-day festival of new independent films and repertory favorites with 15 NY feature film premieres; the fourth annual BAMcinemaFest, with over 20 NY premieres and one North American premiere, ran from June 20—July 1, 2012. • Gregg Turkington on What He Learned from Punk Rock
June 13, 2017 - Gregg Turkington is best known for his "anti-comedy" character, Neil Hamburger. The Australian actor co-stars in the film review web series "On Cinema at the Cinema" with Tim Heidecker and is the co-writer and co-star of the Adult Swim series, Decker. He had a part in the 2015 film Ant-Man, and that same year, starred in Entertainment, a drama he co-wrote. In the 1990s, he ran the music label, Amarillo Records, and played in bands like Caroliner, Zip Code Rapists, Faxed Head, and has released a number of albums as Neil Hamburger, mostly on the Chicago independent music label, Drag City. He contributed artwork and live recordings to Flipper's Public Flipper Limited Live 1980-1985. As told to Charlie Sextro, 2383 words. Tags: Culture, Music, Comedy, Inspiration, Beginnings, Independence. Gregg Turkington on what he learned from punk rock I’m interested to hear how your fascination with showmanship began. As a kid, how interested were you in entertainment? Super interested. Initially really with music, and then I got more into movies. I was a complete obsessive about all the things I liked. I grew up in Tempe, Arizona. I was really into Phil Ochs. He was my absolute idol. I was really into the Bee Gees and The Who. Then I got really into a revival, repertoire theater, The Valley Art. It was like $2 or something and I would pretty much go to any movie that was playing, to see what was going on. Then when I saw something that interested me, I would go over to the campus at ASU.

SERIOUSLY PLAYFUL AND PLAYFULLY SERIOUS: THE HELPFULNESS OF HUMOROUS PARODY A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design by Michael Richard Lucas May 2014 Accepted by: Victor J. Vitanza, Committee Chair Stephaine Barczewski Cynthia Haynes Beth Lauritis i ABSTRACT In the following work I create and define the parameters for a specific form of humorous parody. I highlight specific problematic narrative figures that circulate the public sphere and reinforce our serious narrative expectations. However, I demonstrate how critical public pedagogies are able to disrupt these problematic narrative expectations. Humorous parodic narratives are especially equipped to help us in such situations when they work as a critical public/classroom pedagogy, a form of critical rhetoric, and a form of mass narrative therapy. These findings are supported by a rhetorical analysis of these parodic narratives, as I expand upon their ability to provide a practical model for how to create/analyze narratives both inside/outside of the classroom.

Using a mix of actors and non-actors, the small crew used documentary techniques to give the experience of a true story unfolding in real time. Often filming in four to five locations a day and using a script in which specific dialogue was scarce but the intention for each scene was detailed, actors improvised fully in the moment to allow their characters to develop naturally. What resulted was a team in-sync and fully ready to capture the chaotic world around them. 49 west 27th street 7th floor new york, ny 10001 tel 212 924 6701 fax 212 924 6742 www.magpictures.com 1. As a co-creator of On Cinema and its ensuing worlds with Gregg Turkington, he’s been able to prod at multiple facets of society.

  • Tim Heidecker Presents New Single “Property”
September 16, 2020 For Immediate Release Tim Heidecker Presents New Single “Property” Fear Of Death Out Next Friday, September 25th on Spacebomb Records Photo Courtesy of Spacebomb Records Tim Heidecker will release his biggest sounding album yet, Fear Of Death, next Friday, September 25th on Spacebomb Records. Today, he presents the album’s third single, “Property.” While previously-released singles “Nothing” and “Fear Of Death” mull over mortality, “Property” sees Heidecker pondering the possibility of cemeteries becoming part of a capitalistic, real-estate driven world: “They buried those bodies with the best intent, yes they did // But those boxes could be turned into rent, and you know that they will.” Heidecker and Weyes Blood’s Natalie Mering’s voices glide over hushed, relaxed percussion and floating keys. As Heidecker’s voice becomes more urgent, the instrumentation billows with brass and pronounced strings. Listen to Tim Heidecker’s “Property” Fear of Death features an all star band comprised of Weyes Blood’s Natalie Mering, Drew Erickson (Jonathan Wilson, Dawes), The Lemon Twigs’ Brian and Michael D’Addario, Jonathan Rado, and string arrangements by Spacebomb’s Trey Pollard (Foxygen, Bedouine, The Waterboys, Natalie Prass). Throughout, Heidecker’s sound is fleshed out with winding guitar, slow-building percussion, gentle keys, and a 14-piece string ensemble. This is an earnest departure from comedy and a collection of songs that centers around Serious Topics. As Variety

SCENE & HERD Supreme Being LOS ANGELES 11.09.14 Left: Jack Black with artist Steven Hull. Right: Steven Hull's Circus of Death installation. (Photos: Miriam Katz) “FUCK THIS VIP SHIT—I want some real California dick!” cried a braless Bridget Everett as she made her way toward the general admission section of the crowd. Everett eventually found an object for her affection, a masked dandy she nicknamed “Corky” (cause he was “Down’s-y in the eyes”), whom she cajoled into playing a grown-up game of airplane, bearing the weight of her significant frame right there in the middle of the stage. Soon enough she was motorboating Peaches (the musician, not the fruit), forcing a security guard’s head up her dress, and crooning gorgeously about lady parts of various shapes and sizes. The sun was still shining, but she was working on her night moves. FOMO abounded among the ten thousand attendees at the second annual Festival Supreme, a ten-hour comedy, music, and visual art event organized by Jack Black and Kyle Gass of Tenacious D. Many sported elaborate costumes as we navigated the fifty-plus live acts across four stages, as well as a fifty four-thousand-square-foot art installation, all in an early-twentieth-century Shriners temple located in downtown Los Angeles. The lineup was sick (Fred Armisen, Margaret Cho, Nick Kroll, to name a few), and as if that weren’t enough, special, surprise guests included Weird Al Yankovic, who shredded the Keytar with Tenacious D, and Zach Galifianakis, who starred, along with Orange Is the New Black’s Lauren Lapkus and Parks and Recreation’s Adam Scott, in a live rendition of Scott Aukerman’s podcast and IFC show Comedy Bang! Bang! The heart of the festival lay in its focus on comedy music, a seemingly puerile medium with surprisingly lofty potential.
