Tim Heidecker Presents New Single “Property” September 16, 2020 For Immediate Release Tim Heidecker Presents New Single “Property” Fear Of Death Out Next Friday, September 25th on Spacebomb Records Photo Courtesy of Spacebomb Records Tim Heidecker will release his biggest sounding album yet, Fear Of Death, next Friday, September 25th on Spacebomb Records. Today, he presents the album’s third single, “Property.” While previously-released singles “Nothing” and “Fear Of Death” mull over mortality, “Property” sees Heidecker pondering the possibility of cemeteries becoming part of a capitalistic, real-estate driven world: “They buried those bodies with the best intent, yes they did // But those boxes could be turned into rent, and you know that they will.” Heidecker and Weyes Blood’s Natalie Mering’s voices glide over hushed, relaxed percussion and floating keys. As Heidecker’s voice becomes more urgent, the instrumentation billows with brass and pronounced strings. Listen to Tim Heidecker’s “Property” Fear of Death features an all star band comprised of Weyes Blood’s Natalie Mering, Drew Erickson (Jonathan Wilson, Dawes), The Lemon Twigs’ Brian and Michael D’Addario, Jonathan Rado, and string arrangements by Spacebomb’s Trey Pollard (Foxygen, Bedouine, The Waterboys, Natalie Prass). Throughout, Heidecker’s sound is fleshed out with winding guitar, slow-building percussion, gentle keys, and a 14-piece string ensemble. This is an earnest departure from comedy and a collection of songs that centers around Serious Topics. As Variety points out, “the music Heidecker releases under his own name is anything but comical, instead wrestling with the realities of middle age, mortality and marital mishaps.” And although this is serious music about serious topics, Heidecker says: "I hope my observations and meditations on death, the afterlife, the future, while at times a little dark and grim, offer a little comfort and catharsis for some people.” Additionally, Heidecker will play the first copy of the vinyl test pressing in an exclusive live video stream for anyone who has pre-ordered the album via his website (plus Patreon subscribers). The live stream is on September 20th at 7pm EST. Watch the Video for “Fear of Death” Watch the Visualizer for “Nothing” Pre-order Fear of Death Download hi-res images and jpegs of Tim Heidecker Fear of Death Cover Artwork by Robert Beatty Website | Twitter | Youtube | Instagram For more information, contact: Jessica Linker & Jacob Daneman | Pitch Perfect PR - [email protected], [email protected], 773-271-6844 .

SERIOUSLY PLAYFUL AND PLAYFULLY SERIOUS: THE HELPFULNESS OF HUMOROUS PARODY A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design by Michael Richard Lucas May 2014 Accepted by: Victor J. Vitanza, Committee Chair Stephaine Barczewski Cynthia Haynes Beth Lauritis i ABSTRACT In the following work I create and define the parameters for a specific form of humorous parody. I highlight specific problematic narrative figures that circulate the public sphere and reinforce our serious narrative expectations. However, I demonstrate how critical public pedagogies are able to disrupt these problematic narrative expectations. Humorous parodic narratives are especially equipped to help us in such situations when they work as a critical public/classroom pedagogy, a form of critical rhetoric, and a form of mass narrative therapy. These findings are supported by a rhetorical analysis of these parodic narratives, as I expand upon their ability to provide a practical model for how to create/analyze narratives both inside/outside of the classroom.

Using a mix of actors and non-actors, the small crew used documentary techniques to give the experience of a true story unfolding in real time. Often filming in four to five locations a day and using a script in which specific dialogue was scarce but the intention for each scene was detailed, actors improvised fully in the moment to allow their characters to develop naturally. What resulted was a team in-sync and fully ready to capture the chaotic world around them. 49 west 27th street 7th floor new york, ny 10001 tel 212 924 6701 fax 212 924 6742 www.magpictures.com 1. SCENE & HERD Supreme Being LOS ANGELES 11.09.14 Left: Jack Black with artist Steven Hull. Right: Steven Hull's Circus of Death installation. (Photos: Miriam Katz) “FUCK THIS VIP SHIT—I want some real California dick!” cried a braless Bridget Everett as she made her way toward the general admission section of the crowd. Everett eventually found an object for her affection, a masked dandy she nicknamed “Corky” (cause he was “Down’s-y in the eyes”), whom she cajoled into playing a grown-up game of airplane, bearing the weight of her significant frame right there in the middle of the stage. Soon enough she was motorboating Peaches (the musician, not the fruit), forcing a security guard’s head up her dress, and crooning gorgeously about lady parts of various shapes and sizes. The sun was still shining, but she was working on her night moves. FOMO abounded among the ten thousand attendees at the second annual Festival Supreme, a ten-hour comedy, music, and visual art event organized by Jack Black and Kyle Gass of Tenacious D. Many sported elaborate costumes as we navigated the fifty-plus live acts across four stages, as well as a fifty four-thousand-square-foot art installation, all in an early-twentieth-century Shriners temple located in downtown Los Angeles. The lineup was sick (Fred Armisen, Margaret Cho, Nick Kroll, to name a few), and as if that weren’t enough, special, surprise guests included Weird Al Yankovic, who shredded the Keytar with Tenacious D, and Zach Galifianakis, who starred, along with Orange Is the New Black’s Lauren Lapkus and Parks and Recreation’s Adam Scott, in a live rendition of Scott Aukerman’s podcast and IFC show Comedy Bang! Bang! The heart of the festival lay in its focus on comedy music, a seemingly puerile medium with surprisingly lofty potential.

  • “Is This S**T for Real?” Adorno, Benjamin, and Anti-Comedy Dennis Golin
“Is This S**t For Real?” Adorno, Benjamin, and Anti-Comedy Dennis Golin German cultural theorists Walter Benjamin and Teodore Adorno were outspoken in lamenting the industrially-churned sameness produced by the culture industry, yet both men also saw the power of truly authentic work to deliver moments of introspection (or, as is often the case in modern art, to highlight the absence of them). Te visual technologies of the twentieth century have the power to lull us into submission, but also to politically energize mass audiences through propagating absurdity, imperfection, and confrontation. According to Benjamin’s theories, flm may even have the power to form a window into the unconscious. Te philosophy sustained and elucidated by these two men has had a profound infuence on modern American comedy, particularly in the work of comedians Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim. Troughout their oeuvre of surreal comedy sketches, Tim and Eric take up the complex themes of alienation, greed, inadequacy, and a Freudian obsession with paternity (and by extension patriarchy), and feed them roughly through the meat grinder of lowbrow comedy. Te result embraces the derivative, the faulty, and the profane, creating authenticity by pointing out the hopelessness in trying to achieve it. In the process, their comedy expands our sensibilities and sensory vocabularies, challenges our relationships to reality, and redefnes the scope of artistic expression. Dennis Golin is pursuing his Master's Degree in Media, Culture, and Communications at New York University. A lifelong resident of the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, his research interests include alternative comedy, Public Access Television, the Cold War, and social media manipulation.

It had become apparent that Screen Studies, as a track, was a small and insular part of the school; where other tracks often had to work together on projects, culminating in something that could proudly be shared with the student body, Screen Studies had nothing of the sort. The initial goals for the quarterly were this: increase our presence within the school and strengthen our community with the pride that comes from having a work published and accessible. This is the first edition of the Screen Studies Quarterly, and with that our initial goals will be accomplished. So, then what next? The track has its thesis, but smaller assignments and extracurricular work go into the æther, to disappear until a source needs to be re-quoted in a new context—cut-and-pasted into the next work in the next class.

Fed up with the dearth of movies featuring true American heroes capable of getting the job done, Tim has created the unforgettable character of Agent Jack Decker, who battles terrorism and Washington D.C. bureaucracy in a constant fight for freedom and family values. In the much-expanded second season, Decker fights to free ineffectual President Davidson (Hollywood veteran Joe Estevez) and to save the island of Hawaii from a Taliban takeover. Aided by easily-distracted CIA code-breaker Kington (On Cinema's Gregg Turkington) and up against a new cast of local Hawaiian bad guys, Tim will have to utilize every talent in his bag of tricks-- from music, zip lining and paragliding--to save America. The beautiful settings ensure that suspense, action, and adventure have never looked so good!
