Gregg Turkington on What He Learned from Punk Rock
June 13, 2017 - Gregg Turkington is best known for his "anti-comedy" character, Neil Hamburger. The Australian actor co-stars in the film review web series "On Cinema at the Cinema" with Tim Heidecker and is the co-writer and co-star of the Adult Swim series, Decker. He had a part in the 2015 film Ant-Man, and that same year, starred in Entertainment, a drama he co-wrote. In the 1990s, he ran the music label, Amarillo Records, and played in bands like Caroliner, Zip Code Rapists, Faxed Head, and has released a number of albums as Neil Hamburger, mostly on the Chicago independent music label, Drag City. He contributed artwork and live recordings to Flipper's Public Flipper Limited Live 1980-1985. As told to Charlie Sextro, 2383 words. Tags: Culture, Music, Comedy, Inspiration, Beginnings, Independence. Gregg Turkington on what he learned from punk rock I’m interested to hear how your fascination with showmanship began. As a kid, how interested were you in entertainment? Super interested. Initially really with music, and then I got more into movies. I was a complete obsessive about all the things I liked. I grew up in Tempe, Arizona. I was really into Phil Ochs. He was my absolute idol. I was really into the Bee Gees and The Who. Then I got really into a revival, repertoire theater, The Valley Art. It was like $2 or something and I would pretty much go to any movie that was playing, to see what was going on. Then when I saw something that interested me, I would go over to the campus at ASU. -

Using a mix of actors and non-actors, the small crew used documentary techniques to give the experience of a true story unfolding in real time. Often filming in four to five locations a day and using a script in which specific dialogue was scarce but the intention for each scene was detailed, actors improvised fully in the moment to allow their characters to develop naturally. What resulted was a team in-sync and fully ready to capture the chaotic world around them. 49 west 27th street 7th floor new york, ny 10001 tel 212 924 6701 fax 212 924 6742 www.magpictures.com 1. ABOUT THE CAST As one half of comedy duo “Tim and Eric” and creator of Abso Lutely Productions, Tim Heidecker can easily be viewed as a godfather of subversive, alt-comedy. With roles in “Us”, “Eastbound & Down”, “Awesome Show”, “Portlandia” and more, Mr. Heidecker has helped to affect the comedy landscape for years to come. As a co-creator of On Cinema and its ensuing worlds with Gregg Turkington, he’s been able to prod at multiple facets of society. -

Warner Wood This thesis examines how the DIY punk scene in Chicago has utilized secretive information dissemination practices to manage boundaries between itself and mainstream society. Research for this thesis started in 2013, following the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s meeting in Chicago. This event caused a crisis within the Chicago DIY punk scene that primarily relied on residential spaces, from third story apartments to dirt-floored basements, as venues. -

Peace Punks and Punks Against Racism: Resource Mobilization and Frame Construction in the Punk Movement
Music and Arts in Action | Volume 2 | Issue 1 PEACE PUNKS AND PUNKS AGAINST RACISM: RESOURCE MOBILIZATION AND FRAME CONSTRUCTION IN THE PUNK MOVEMENT MIKE ROBERTS & RYAN MOORE Department of Sociology | San Diego State University | USA* Department of Sociology | Florida Atlantic University | USA ABSTRACT In recent years, scholars have begun to attend to the gap in our understanding of the relationship between music and social movements. One such example is Corte’s and Edwards’ “White Power Music and the Mobilization of Racist Social Movements.” Our research shares the perspective of Corte and Edwards (2008) which emphasizes the centrality of music to social movement organizations, especially in terms of resource mobilization, but rather than look at how punk music was used as an instrument by an external social movement like the White Power movement, we look at how punks themselves joined social movements and altered the dynamics of the movements they joined. We also provide examples of punk involvement in left wing social movements to emphasize the indeterminate nature of punk politics. We examine two such cases: the Rock Against Racism movement in the U.K., and the Peace movement in the U.S. In both cases, punks made use of their independent media as a means to provide an infrastructure for mobilization of resources to sustain the punks’ involvement in these social movements and the unique framing provided by punks, which altered the dynamic of the movements they joined. What makes punk an interesting case is that the “do-it-yourself” ethic of independent media construction that was at the centre of the punk movement made it possible for punks to make connections to various other social movements as well as alter the dynamics of those social movements. -

Political Pie-Throwing: Dead Kennedys and the Yippie-Punk Continuumi MICHAEL STEWART FOLEY By the time Dead Kennedys released their first LP, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, in 1980, the band had established itself as the leading American political punk band, hailing from a city that seemed to specialize in political art. In many ways, the band and its music represented the culmination of nearly three years of subcultural political struggle on a host of issues facing not only young people in San Francisco but American youth everywhere – enough that, to this day, many of the city’s punk veterans refer to their experience in the “movement.” Political historians of the United States in the 1970s and 1980s have mostly ignored punk, but this essay examines Dead Kennedys’ early career as a way to illuminate the political experience of one segment of American youth in the late 1970s. -
