Corresponding author: [email protected] (Widya Fatriasari) Abstract This research was conducted to study the effects of pre-treatment with white-rot fungi on pulp properties of betung bamboo. Inoculum stocks of white-rot fungi (25 ml) were injected into polybags contained barkless fresh bamboo chips. Each polybag contained 214.9–286.8 g oven dry weight of chips. Bamboo chips in the polybags were inoculated by Pleurotus ostreatus and Trametes versicolor. Both of them were then incubated for 30 and 45 days at room temperature. Bamboo chips were cooked using soda and Kraft processes. The cooked bamboo chips were then defiberize using disc refiner for 3 times. Pulp yield, kappa number and degree of freeness of the pulp were then analyzed. The treatment of two white rot fungi, gave different effects on the characteristic of betung bamboo pulp. The effects of fungi treatment on kappa number and degree of freeness can be seen only at samples cooked using kraft process. Incubation time did not affect pulp yield of bamboo treated with both fungi, but it affected kappa number and degree of freeness of bamboo pulp cooked using kraft process. Bamboo treated with T. versicolor incubated for 45 days and cooked using kraft process produced the best pulp quality with high pulp yield. Kapik A Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the course requirements for The Bachelor of Science Degree Western Michigan University Kalamazoo, Michigan December, 1983 ABSTRACT Clean corrugated board waste was fractionated into its softwood/ hardwood fiber components, repulped using a kraft pulping process, and bleached using a CEHD bleaching sequence in an effort to produce high brightness fiber suitable for use in medium to high quality white paper. The papers produced had almost equivalent mechanical strengths and opacity, but possessed unsatisfactory brightness and cleanliness when compared to commercially manufactured,:. bleached kraft pulps of identical softwood/hardwood contents. Based on this experimental data, the use of recycled fiber from corrugated board as a fiber substitute in the manufacture of high quality printing and writing papers is not recommended due to its inferior brightness and cleanliness. -

Part 711, to exempt from all CDR requirements four pulping chemicals involved in the manufacture of paper and other pulp-based products. The four pulping chemicals are complex mixtures used in the kraft pulping process: • Sulfite Liquors and Cooking Liquors, white (CAS No. 68131-33-9) (white liquor) • Sulfite Liquors and Cooking Liquors, spent (CAS No. 66071-92-9) (black liquor) • Sulfite Liquors and Cooking Liquors, spent, oxidized (CAS No. 68514-09-0) (black liquor, oxidized) • Sulfite Liquors and Cooking Liquors, green (CAS No. 68131-30-6) (green liquor) Each of these substances is manufactured and recycled onsite in a continuous closed loop. The model was made in WinGEMS 5.3 and the method consisted of implementing a static Na/S balance from the mill and created a model that described this chemical balance. Input data from the mill was collected and implemented in the model. A number of different cases were simulated to predict the effects of different process changes over time, dynamic balances. The result from the static balance showed that the model can describes the mill case. The result from the dynamic simulation showed that the model can be used to predict the effect of process changes over shorter periods of time. Executive Summary In the kraft mill the chemical balance is of interest to minimize the production cost. Normally there is an excess of sulfur and low levels of sodium, compared to what the process requires. In the future, the pulp mill will most likely produce other products than just pulp. These new production processes will also most likely affect the sodium and sulfur balance and there is a need to be able to predict this change. -

Lignin, the most plenty polymer as an aromatic source in nature has been traditionally considered as a by-product or side stream from pulp and paper process, although lignin commercialization as a source of phenolic compounds has gained more and more relevance lately. However, several drawbacks have to be still overcome, such as the high polydispersity and high content in impurities of the obtained lignin samples, which lead to generate a recalcitrant behavior that hinders its transformation processes into high value- added chemical compounds. Lignin-based products must be competitive with their petroleum-derived counterparts. Hence, it is very important to design energetically efficient processes for lignin extraction and purification. For this purpose, lignin-based products have to be assumed as a section of an integrated biorefinery where multiple products are obtained and in this line being able to compete in a realistic scenario. -
