Heinrich Heine: a Biographical Anthology
HEINRICH HEINE A Biographical Anthology The publication of this volume by The Jewish Publication Society of America was made possible by the Nehemiah Gitelson Fund, established in loving memory of Nehemiah Gitelson ( 1853- 1932), scholar, rabbi, talmudic teacher, and merchant. The present work is the fifth issued under this Fund. The first, The House of Nasi-The Duke of Naxos, the second, Prince of the Ghetto, and the third, Pil grims in a New Land, were published in 1948. The fourth, The Jews, Their His tory, Culture and Religion, was published in 1949· HEINRICH A Biographical Anthology Edited by HUGO BIEBER English translations made or selected by MOSES HADAS Philadelphia THE JEWISH PUBLICATION SOCIETY OF AMERICA 5717-1956 Copyright @, 1956 by The Jcv.•ish Publication Society of America All Rights Reserved First Edition Library of Congress Catalog Card No.: 56·7782. PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA PREFACE It is right and fittingthat a word of tribute be expressed here in memory of the late Dr. Hugo Bieber, the author of this book. Born in Berlin, Germany, in 1883, he became a historian of Ger man literature and author of a number of works in this field; he was also the literary director of a German book guild. The trans formation of Germany in 1933, from the home of culture to the citadel of Nazism, compelled him to go to France; and in 1940 he came to the United States. Since he had made a special study of Heinrich Heine and had written a number of books on the subject, it was natural for the Jewish Publication Society to turn to him when it decided to prepare a volume on the German poet. -

A Model for Customization Reducing Reactance to Persuasive Messages
The Impact of Source and Message Customization on Reactance: A Model for Customization Reducing Reactance to Persuasive Messages DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Michael D. Hanus, M.A. Graduate Program in Communication The Ohio State University 2016 Dissertation Committee: Jesse Fox, Advisor Brad Bushman Nancy Rhodes Emily Moyer-Gusé Copyrighted by Michael David Hanus 2016 Abstract As consumers are becoming increasingly jaded toward traditional advertising methods, creators of persuasive messages are turning to new ways to make their appeals. Interactive technology allows the means to give users control over the persuasive message, message source, or product. When users are given control, a host of psychological benefits work in tandem to reduce resistance to being persuaded and ultimately increase favorable attitudes towards the advertised product. These studies assess the means by which customizing a persuasive source or message can change attitudes towards an advertised product. Using the theory of interactive media effects (TIME) and the entertainment overcoming resistance model (EORM) as theoretical foundations, an explanatory model, the customization reactance reduction model (CRRM), was created to assess the role of customization in reducing resistance to persuasive appeals. Three studies were conducted to establish the means by which allowing users to customize can improve their attitudes toward a product and to give support for the CRRM. Study 1 allowed users to create the avatar for a salesperson who would give them a persuasive pitch in a virtual environment. These users liked the product in the pitch better than those who could only watch an avatar customization video and had no direct control over the source’s appearance. -

Othello: from Beginner to Master – a Few Words Copyright © 2003, Randy Fang
OTHELLO : FROM BEGINNER TO MASTER CCCOPYRIGHT ©©© 2003, RRRANDY FFFANG Othello: From Beginner to Master – A Few Words Copyright © 2003, Randy Fang A FEW WORDS After the 2003 US National Championships, I set out on a mission to do what few others have even attempted – to write a book about Othello. Former World Champion Brian Rose has been writing his book for over 3 years and every time I asked the other tournament regulars about it, there was no new news on it. I finally decided that I was tired of waiting and started to work on my own book. While most of my counterparts are usually only playing against other top players, I play many games against people who are still learning, and I think I have special insight into the kinds of questions that they might have. I’ve put a lot of effort into the diagrams and exercises, in fact, many of the exercises in this book are based on positions that I consistently see beginning level players misplay. I’m sure that there are mistakes in this version. In fact, every time I go through it I find one more thing I need to fix, however, I think that the form that it is in now is suitable for general consumption. I’m still working on the rest of the book. It’s taken me three full months to get through the beginner material. I imagine it will take me three months to four months get through the intermediate section, and another three months to four months get through the advanced section.
