Welcome to OSU! Self-Guided Tour of Campus Oregon State University’s main campus is over 400 acres and has 121 buildings-needless to say you will only have a chance to see a small part of it! Tuition was $10 a term in 1870 when the first degrees were awarded to a class of three (one woman and two men). There are currently over 27,000 students from all 50 states and 93 foreign countries. The Tour: (Sites can be visited in any order) Memorial Union & Quad In the Quad: The MU opened in 1928 and remains a popular place with students today. The quad (lawn) out front often has information booths, live music concerts, and students hanging out doing homework or basking in the Oregon sun. In the lounge: This beautiful area, also known as the students’ living room, features couches and chairs for between-class studying or naps. At noon on Fridays, the lounge hosts concerts for students and the public by OSU music groups including parts of the orchestra and a capella groups. All of the flags throughout the hall represent a student or faculty member from that particular country. On main level: If you are looking for a bite to eat, there are a couple of great places to get a bite on the West end of the MU. OSU students can either use cash or a debit card to purchase meals. On campus, there are 17 different restaurants, cafés, and stores to choose from. In the basement: During any free time that students have here at OSU, they can be found down in the basement playing pool on one of the many pool tables, bowling at OSU’s recreational bowling alley, and playing video games with friends. This is a great place to come and just hang out with friends and have a great time after a busy week of classes! The Valley Library Come on inside! Remember to be quiet because students are studying. The Valley Library contains over 1.4 million books and was named national Library of the year in 1999. It contains the largest collection of Pacific Northwest art. Please do not touch any artwork. There is a Linus Pauling exhibit in the library; he is the only person to receive two individual Nobel Prizes in Chemistry (1954) and Peace (1962). As an OSU Alum, he died in 1994 and gave his private collection of papers to the university. Students may also check out textbooks and laptops from the library as a way to save money in college. Also, located in the East wing of the library is a café and to the South is the learning center. This is where students can come in at any time to get help from teaching assistants on homework and projects. The library, overall, is a great place to come and study either with a group or alone! Kelley Engineering Center This is one of OSU’s newest buildings, completed in 2005. It is considered to be a “green” building- built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) specification for sustainability. Look inside and outside the building and you will see all sorts or key features that make this building energy efficient. Notice all of the windows that allow sunlight to come in! Weatherford Hall This is one of the 17 residence halls that together hold 3,200 students. Weatherford primarily houses students who are interested in business. Inside here are dorms, a café, a business library, two classrooms, high speed internet, music rooms, a TV room, laundry facilities, a kitchen and a sauna for use by the residents. Dorms are a great place to live because you get to meet all kinds of new people in college and make life- long friends! Some neat features are the rain water collectors on the outside of the building. These reuse the water for the toilets in the bathrooms. Also, the lamps throughout the first floor, such as in the picture above, only use one light bulb and lots of little mirrors to send the light out in multiple directions so we can get a lot of light with a little bit of energy! Dixon Recreation Center and Student Legacy Park After a busy day at school, sometimes a nice workout is all you need. At Dixon rec. center you’ll find students shooting hoops on the court, running on the treadmills, climbing the rock wall, or swimming laps in Dixon’s pool. You won’t be able to go into the center because you need an ID card to have access to all of the equipment, but right outside of the center is Student Legacy Park. SLP is where all of the intramural fields are located. On all days of the week you’ll be able to join in on a pick up soccer game or go hang out with some friends! 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Dairy Barns HARRISON AVE 4490 NW Harrison Ave ARNOLD WAY .5 miles west of campus Horse Center NW 53rd & Harrison Ave NW 35TH ST NW 26TH ST NW 30TH ST 1 mile west of campus KINGS BLVD JACKSON AVE A Sheep Center A 7565 NW Oak Creek Dr OrcC 3 miles west of campus Gem Glfn NW 14TH ST Aud DGeo Burt Trysting Tree Golf Club NW 27TH ST Wlkn OAB BCC 34028 Electric Rd.
