The largest regional intergovernmental platform with 53 member States and 9 associate members, ESCAP has emerged as a strong regional think tank offering countries sound analytical products that shed insight into the evolving economic, social and environmental dynamics of the region. The Commission’s strategic focus is to deliver on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which it does by reinforcing and deepening regional cooperation and integration to advance connectivity, financial cooperation and market integration. ESCAP’s research and analysis coupled with its policy advisory services, capacity building and technical assistance to governments, aim to support countries’ sustainable and inclusive development ambitions. Kazakhstan: Trade Facilitation and Logistics Development Strategy Report The Asian Development Bank has been supporting efforts to reduce poverty and improve livelihoods in the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) countries. A major focus of these efforts is improving the transport and trade sectors to spur economic growth and promote social and political cohesion within the region. Improving the efficiency of the CAREC transport corridors will allow these landlocked countries to take full advantage of being transit countries between the surging and dynamic economies of the East and the West. This report, one of a series of nine reports, highlights the substantial challenges that Kazakhstan needs to overcome and recommends measures to make its transport and trade Kazakhstan sectors more efficient and cost-competitive. No. Regional and Country Profile: Central Asia, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan June 2009 Japan Interntional Cooperation Agency OPMAC Corporation 東中 JR 09-004 Outline of the Study 1-1 Backgrounds Bordered by Asia to the east and Europe to the west, Central Asia occupies a vital position in the Eurasian Continent. Possessing abundant underground reserves of petroleum, gas, gold, uranium ore and other underground resources, and occupying a strategically vital geopolitical location, Central Asia has historically been the focus of competing interests by various powers. Central Asia is surrounded by the superpowers of Russia and China, and today is affected by regional instability in the neighboring Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan, etc. Especially in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States in 2001, worldwide attention has been directed towards the stability and development of the whole South Asian region including this area and Afghanistan, and vested interests have become increasingly complicated. Moreover, against a background of growing energy demand in China, India and other parts of Asia, the stable supply of petroleum and natural gas from Central Asia helps stabilize the international energy market and enhances regional importance from the viewpoint of energy security too. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the republics of Central Asia respectively gained independence, and a number of regional organizations, i.e. the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and Eurasia Economic Community (EAEC), etc. were established under a mélange of economic, diplomatic and military interests in Central Asia and environs. Concerning relations with Japan, the concept of Silk Road Diplomacy was enunciated in 1997. -

Kazakhstan 2020 Crime & Safety Report: Nur-Sultan (formerly Astana) This is an annual report produced in conjunction with the Regional Security Office at the U.S. Embassy in Nur-Sultan (formerly Astana). OSAC encourages travelers to use this report to gain baseline knowledge of security conditions in Kazakhstan. Travel Advisory The current U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory at the date of this report’s publication assesses Kazakhstan at Level 1, indicating travelers should exercise normal precautions. Overall Crime and Safety Situation Crime Threats The U.S. Department of State has assessed Nur-Sultan as being a LOW-threat location for crime directed at or affecting official U.S. government interests. The reported numbers of incidents in all categories of crime are statistically on par with or lower than an average city in the United States. Crime does not impede the operations of U.S. private-sector organizations. Petty theft, while not common, continues to be the most common crime against foreigners. Pickpockets tend to frequent tourist sites, open-air markets, and heavily traveled public transportation, especially buses. The U.S. Embassy has received reports about vehicle break-ins (smash-and-grabs). Other common crimes in Nur-Sultan are purse snatching, residential burglary, theft, and robbery. Its territory is as large as 2,724,900 km2. Kazakhstan is divided into 14 oblasts (regions) headed by provincial governor (akims) and 5 economic regions. Kazakhstan is rich with industrial metals and minerals. The country has the largest deposits of chromium, vanadium, bismuth and fluorine, and holding significant amounts of iron, chromium, lead, zinc, tungsten, molybdenum, phosphorite, copper, potassium and cadmium. Oil, gas, coal, metals, uranium and other energy related resources are available in large quantities too. The proven stock of Kazakhstan is 3,6 billion tons of oil and 1,9 billion cubic metres of natural gas. On coal stocks Kazakhstan occupies 9th place in the world.
