Fluri* Geography Department and Women’s and Gender Studies Program, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, USA This paper examines corporeal modernity as part of the larger ‘savior and liberation’ trope produced for Afghan women by US-led military, political and economic intervention post-9/11. This savior trope has been identified as a co-optation of women’s rights discourses and activism (Hunt 2002), a misguided approach to security through gendered scripts of masculine aggressive protection and female submission (Young 2003; Dowler 2002), and as yet another example in a long history of gendered tropes devised by colonial and imperial powers to save Muslim women (Abu Lughod 2002).

Lindsey Coffey Captures USA’s First Miss Earth Crown 28 year old from Pennsylvania bested 83 candidates at the 20th anniversary coronation November 29, 2020. Washington, D.C. – Lindsey Coffey of Pennsylvania became the first American representative to be crowned as Miss Earth during the 20th anniversary coronation on November 29. Based in the Philippines, Miss Earth® is the only major international pageant to hold an event during the year 2020, opting to host a two-month long series of virtual online events. “We decided not to skip this year so we can continue with our mission to raise awareness on the state of the environment,” Lorraine Schuck, Carousel Productions executive vice-president and Miss Earth co-founder said in a statement earlier this year. Advocating Beauty for a Cause ™ , Miss Earth empowers women through community leadership, eco-tourism, and environmental education. It is recognized as the globe’s most relevant pageant, and in the United States has been named best national pageant by several American media networks. Coffey, age 28, was a successful college track athlete and completed a pre-law curriculum at Washington and Jefferson College in Pennsylvania. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in political science before entering a successful modeling career in New York and other major cities around the world. She plans to continue her goal to pursue law school following her year as Miss Earth. Following the announcement Coffey said, "I joined the Miss Earth sisterhood to become a voice, to inspire, and to make a difference in our world. Now is that opportunity.

  • DENR Issues Violation Notice Vs. Barge Owner in Iloilo City
STRATEGIC BANNER COMMUNICATION UPPER PAGE 1 EDITORIAL CARTOON STORY STORY INITIATIVES PAGE LOWER SERVICE DENR issues violation notice vs. barge owner in July 06, 2020 PAGE 1/ DATE TITLE : Iloilo City 1/2 DENR issues violation notice vs. barge owner in Iloilo City Published July 5, 2020, 1:22 PM by Ellalyn De Vera-Ruiz A notice of violation (NOV) will be issued against the owner of a barge that exploded off the coast of Iloilo City last Friday due to violation of environmental laws, an official of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said on Sunday. (MANILA BULLETIN) Undersecretary Benny Antiporda said the issuance of a NOV against AC Energy Corporation is based on Republic Act 9275 or the Clean Water Act of 2004. “A technical conference will be called to address the oil spill focusing on the clean-up operations. Then the case will be endorsed to the PAB (Pollution Adjudication Board) for computation of fines against AC Energy Corporation,” he explained. Antiporda pointed out that the company, in coordination with a third-party, Harbor Star Shipping Services, will be conducting the clean-up operations in the affected area. “Clean-up must be conducted following the national oil spill contingency plan and clean-up operations shall be supervised by the Philippine Coast Guard,” he said. “The regional incident management team has been created to monitor all aspects of the clean- up from the affected community, health impacts, environmental impacts, and waste management,” he added. The Philippine Coast Guard earlier reported that approximately one hectare of mangrove area has become a “proximate sensitive area” to the oil spill.
