Animals in the aquarium must also have a supply of nutritious foods. The feed must be supplied judiciously to prevent obesity and to avoid water quality deterioration by promoting excess ammonia and concentration of other nutrients. All animal and plant life should be quarantined before introduction into an established aquarium system to prevent the introduction of disease. In addition to maintenance of good water quality, proper sanitation and proper nutrition are essential practices for disease prevention. Aquariums should be covered to prevent fish from jumping out. Proper lighting is essential for the health of all animals, plant life, and also for aesthetic reasons—to best display the wide variety of colors exhibited by the many life forms in the aquarium. Most people choose fish, corals, and other invertebrates from tropical warm waters because they tend to be more colorful. Hobbyists that maintain organisms from temperate or coldwater regions must chill the water if ambient conditions are too warm. Because of potential temperature differences in holding and receiving waters, the animals and plants should be acclimated to holding water before being released into the aquarium. A responsible aquarist must have a plan for proper care or disposal of fish and other livestock that they can no longer keep, or that have become ill or died. Do not release live exotic fish into the wild or dispose by flushing them down the toilet. Such actions can be detrimental to the environment and the animal. Attempt to return or exchange the unwanted animal at the pet shop, trade with another responsible aquarist or contact someone from your local aquarium society for help. A local school or animal care center may serve as repository for the care of such unwanted animals. For sick animals or for assistance with euthanasia, consult with a veterinarian or fish health specialist. As a last resort, animals can also be killed by placing them in ice-water. The reduced water temperature places the fish into topor or dormancy before death. This method of using ice has not been approved and is under current investigation. Most importantly, the consumer should not think of fish as a disposable item, especially with those rare and difficult to obtain species. Realization that many fish, corals, and other invertebrates are, in fact, wildlife will help with understanding the environmental implications of the aquarium trade. Since many of the aquarium inhabitants are collected directly from the wild, the sustainability of a wild fisheries resource is critical to a healthy industry. Learning about the species chosen by asking the retailer questions and becoming an educated consumer is the key to becoming a responsible aquarium fish owner. Information is readily available through local aquarium clubs, in books, aquarium magazines, the Internet and other similar sources. Live rock is a general term for any type of rock encrusted with, and containing within its orifices, a wide variety of marine organisms including algae and colorful sessile invertebrates. Live rock serves as the principal biological and chemical filter in many marine-type tanks, and the encrusted organisms usually provide much of the background coloration in the tank. The best general advice is to make sure the animals you are buying are compatible. Mini Reefs allow you to keep many more corals and invertebrates than typical marine aquariums, yet are more restrictive on which fish you can keep. Find information on each of the individual corals in our encyclopedia, Coral Reef Animals of The World. Each coral guide includes their foods and feeding, lighting, and compatibility requirements. See the saltwater fish encyclopedia World of Saltwater Aquariums for guides on each marine fish as well. Another great resource for an introduction to the complexities of keeping reef fish and corals together is the reef aquarium book, Conscientious Marine Aquarist , by Robert Fenner. Reef Maintenance and Care Reef maintenance, care and feeding are more stringent than for any other type of aquarium. Although the different filtration methods require slightly different maintenance, in general there are certain guidelines which can be followed for any reef. Basically maintenance can be broken into into daily, weekly, monthly and twice yearly tasks:. A Note of Caution: In our experience additives of any kind can spur the growth of undesirable algae if done to excess. Don't put anything in the tank if you don't know what is in it, and don't exceed the manufacturers' dosage. In general you can get by with a lot less than what is recommended. Of course the best way is to monitor the levels of these elements and only supplement them if necessary. Problems in the Reef Even with proper reef maintenance there are common reef problems. Most of these are a form or algae that must be dealt with or your coral risk losing the battle for space, and very possibly death. The main algae problems are:. Hair Algae The Dreaded Hair algae is probably the most common problem encountered in reef keeping.

  • The Maroon Clownfish Sea Hares in the Aquarium
FREE ISSN 1045-3520 Volume 22 Issue 1, 2005 Sea hares in the Aquarium Photo by Bob Fenner Julie Van Horn Most aquarists regard sea slugs with one idea in mind: algae eaters. It is true that they do eat large quantities of algae, but sea slugs are singular creatures in their own right. First it is important to distinguish among the types of sea slugs. The sea slugs most commonly appearing at an aquarium store near you are likely either nudibranchs or sea hares. Nudibranchs are generally less than a few inches in length, brightly colored and have highly specific dietary requirements. Sea hares are significantly larger, less brightly colored and have more general diet preferences. Responsible aquarium keepers know what they are buying and its proper care. Many people have heard of nudibranchs, but sea hares are a different story. A sea hare in an aquarium store is likely to be of the genus Aplysia (Photo 1). A sea hare from the species Bursatella is shown in Photo2. The largest Aplysia is the California sea hare (Aplysia californica), which can grow to 3 three feet in length! Not to worry though, this kind of growth is unlikely in a Premnas biaculeatus - A beautiful but ornery clownfish home aquarium. Sea hare growth is limited by the quality and quantity of food they receive. Aplysia are not overly fond of hair algae, but if that is all that is Classification there, they will reluctantly try to eat it, even though Premnas biaculeatus - The it is not their natural food. To really make a sea Maroon Clownfish All other clownfish species (subfamily hare happy, feed it freshly collected seaweeds like Amphiprionae of the Damselfish family sea lettuce (Ulva).
