A legendary account of the sacred places, tem- ples, pools and groves of Orissa. By Kapila. The work is probably the most ancient of the several which treat of the holy places of Orissa. It opens in the usual Puranic form with an enquiry from Satyajit, in reply to whom Kapila recites what he had heard from Bharadvaja in reply to a similar question from an assembly of sages at the sacred pool of Pushkara. Judging from the places described, the work cannot date from an earlier age than the 8th century, nor is it likely to be later than the llth century. The author evinces no marked sectarian ten- his are on the whole distributed dency, and praises very fairly ; though the fact of his placing Bhuvanes'vara at the end would imply that at heart he was a Yaishnava. • Lingaraj Temple
Lingaraj Temple February 1, 2021 The Odisha government has chalked out a plan for peripheral development of the 11th century Shree Lingaraj Temple to attract more tourists to the state capital during the post pandemic period. Lingaraj Temple Lingaraja Temple is a temple dedicated to Shiva and is one of the oldest temples in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. It represents the quintessence of the Kalinga Architecture and culminating the medieval stages of the architectural tradition at Bhubaneswar. The temple is believed to be built by the kings from the Somavamsi dynasty, with later additions from the Ganga rulers. It is built in the Deula style that has four components namely, vimana (structure containing the sanctum), jagamohana (assembly hall), nata mandira (festival hall) and bhoga-mandapa (hall of offerings), each increasing in the height to its predecessor. Bhubaneswar is called the Ekamra Kshetra as the deity of Lingaraja was originally under a mango tree (Ekamra) as noted in Ekamra Purana, a 13th-century Sanskrit treatise. The temple has images of Vishnu, possibly because of the rising prominence of Jagannath sect emanating from the Ganga rulers who built the Jagannath Temple in Puri in the 12th century. Kalinga School of Temple Architecture An inscription in the Amrtesvara Temple at Holal in Karnataka refers to four styles of Hindu temple architecture i.e. Nagara, Kalinga, Dravida and Vesara. The inscription mentions one sutradhari, architect, named Bammoja, said to be the master of chaturjati (four classes) of temples namely Nagara, Kalinga, Dravida and Vesara. Kalinga style is identified as a subclass under the Nagara category. Bhuvanapradipa primarily defines three kinds of Kalinga temple styles i.e.

  • Centre Withdrew Draft Heritage Bylaws on Jagannath Temple
Centre Withdrew Draft Heritage Bylaws on Jagannath Temple drishtiias.com/printpdf/centre-withdrew-draft-heritage-bylaws-on-jagannath-temple Why in News The Centre has withdrawn the draft heritage bylaws issued by the National Monuments Authority (NMA) for Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. The Odisha Government is demanding withdrawal of the bylaws for temples in Ekamra Kshetra area of Bhubaneswar as well. Key Points Draft Heritage Bylaws: Background: The government in 2010 formed the National Monuments Authority under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (Amendment and Validation) Act, 2010. NMA’s primary role was to prepare heritage bylaws for the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) listed structures. Meaning: The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (Amendment and Validation) Act 2010 mandates that monument- specific heritage bylaws be prepared to regulate construction activity near ASI-protected monuments. The draft heritage bylaws need to be approved by Parliament. 1/3 The Case of Odisha: The State government considered that the byelaws would have hampered the grand infrastructure development planned around 12th century Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri. Similar heritage bylaws have been drafted for two temples in Bhubaneswar - the 13th century Vaishnava temple of Ananta Basudev and Shiva temple of Brahmeswar, both in the Ekamra Kshetra area. In 2020, the state government planned a beautification project around the area spread across 1,126 acre and develop it into a major tourist attraction. Jagannath Temple: Construction: It is believed to be constructed in the 12th century by King Anatavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty. Mythology: Jagannath Puri temple is called ‘Yamanika Tirtha’ where, according to the Hindu beliefs, the power of ‘Yama’, the god of death, has been nullified due to the presence of Lord Jagannath.

  • Orrisa Temple Architecture (Lingraja & Konark)
Orrisa Temple Architecture (Lingraja & Konark) Dr. Dilip Kumar Assistant Professor (Guest) Dept. of Ancient Indian History & Archaeology, Patna University, Patna Paper – III, B.A 2nd Year Bhubaneswar is also called the 'City of Temples'. It boasted of more than 7000 temples located around Bindusagar tank in the old city. Only 500 of those temples survive today some of which are really magnificent. Orissa formed a part of the Kalinga Kingdom. In 260 BC, Emperor Ashoka defeated the King of Kalinga. But soon the bloody battle filled Ashoka with remorse and he renounced war and violence forever. He embraced Buddhism and followed the path of peace, pity, compassion and non-violence. Soon after Ashoks's death Buddhism in Orissa declined and Jainism had the sway under the mighty arm of Kharvela until Buddhism again became a popular faith in 2nd century B. C. Under Kharvela Orissa attained new heights in art, culture trade and commerce. The coming of the Kesari and Ganga Kings marks the culmination of Orissa art and culture. These kings were very powerful and ambitious builders. They were followers of Shaiva and Vaishnava faith. The temples of Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark were constructed during their reign (712-1200 AD). In 1568 AD, the last Hindus ruler of Orissa was over-thrown by a Muslim general and finally Orissa was annexed by Akbar in 1592 AD. The bigoted Muslim invaders destroyed hundreds of Hindu and Jain temples. The location for the capital was selected because of its central location, high altitude, good communication, vast plateau like high uplands sloping to the sides, eco-friendly climate and above all deep-rooted historical significance with left out landmarks of architectures and sculptures.
