The area first appears as the ancient capital of Kalinga. Bhubaneswar India, the 'city of temples', named after COLLABORATIVE SPIRIT Tribhuvaneswar, 'Lord of Three Worlds', still preserves over 500 of India's finest temples, around which the religious life of the city revolves. Mythological references and the epigraphic sources describe the area as Ekamra Kshetra and Saiva Pitha. In 1936, the Odisha (Orissa)) became a separate province with Cuttack as its Capital, which was eventually changed to Bhubaneswar in 1956. UNRELENTIN Bhubaneswar Weather Conditions Bhubaneswar is located on the coastal plains of Odisha, south-west of the River Mahanadi. It experiences typical tropical weather conditions, and succumbs to the heat and cold waves that sweep in from north India. G DEDICATION The summer months from March to May are hot and humid, and temperatures often shoot past 40° C in May. The south west monsoon lashes Odisha in June, bringing relief to the parched environs of Bhubaneswar. July and August receive the maximum rainfall, which may average over 220 mm a month. Pleasant weather conditions prevail during November in Bhubaneswar, but December and January face the chilly winds from the North/North-East at average speeds of 7 miles/hour. Temperatures drop to approximately 15° C during these months. EXPERT THINKING © Mindtree 2015 Kalinga Advisory Series Page 2 Historical Places near Kalinga Campus COLLABORATIVE SPIRIT Lingaraja Temple Lingaraja Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Harihara, a form of Shiva and Vishnu and is one of the oldest temples in Bhubaneswar, the capital of the East Indian state of Odisha. The Lingaraja temple is the largest temple in Bhubaneswar. The temple is built in the Deula style. Bhubaneswar is called the Ekamra Kshetra as the deity of Lingaraja was originally under a mango tree (Ekamra) as noted in Ekamra Purana. The temple is active in worship practises, unlike most other UNRELENTIN temples in Bhubaneswar and Shiva is worshipped as Harihara, a combined form of Vishnu and Shiva. The temple has an average of 6,000 visitors per day and receives lakhs of visitors during festivals. Shivaratri festival is the major festival celebrated in the temple. G DEDICATION Nandankanan Zoological Park Nandankanan Zoological Park is a 400-hectare zoo and botanical garden in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. Established in 1960, it was opened to the public in EXPERT THINKING 1979 and became the first zoo in India to join World Association of Zoos and Aquariums in 2009. The park remains closed on Mondays. © Mindtree 2015 Kalinga Advisory Series Page 3 Dhauli Dhauli hills are located on the banks COLLABORATIVE SPIRIT of the river Daya, 8 km south of Bhubaneswar in Odisha (India). It is a hill with vast open space adjoining it, and has major Edicts of Ashoka engraved on a mass of rock, by the side of the road leading to the summit of the hill. Dhauli hill is presumed to be the UNRELENTIN area where the Kalinga War was fought. The rock-cut elephant above the Edicts is the earliest Buddhist sculpture of Odisha. On the top of the hill, a dazzling white peace pagoda has been built by the Japan Buddha Sangha and the Kalinga Nippon Buddha Sangha in the 1970s. The Dhauligiri hills also has an ancient Shiva temple which is the place for mass gathering G DEDICATION during Shivaratri Celebrations. The state’s first light and sound show has started at the Dhauli hill, easily identified by the Shanti Stupa at the top. The show will be held on all days except Mondays. Jagannath Temple, Puri The Jagannath Temple of Puri is a sacred Vaishnava temple dedicated to Lord Jagannath and located on the EXPERT THINKING eastern coast of India, at Puri in the state of Odisha. The temple is an important pilgrimage destination and is particularly visited by devotees of Supreme lord Sri Krishna and is one of the Char Dham pilgrimages that anyone is expected to make in one's lifetime. © Mindtree 2015 Kalinga Advisory Series Page 4 The temple is famous for its annual Rath Yatra, or chariot festival, in which the three main temple deities are hauled on huge and elaborately decorated temple cars. Since medieval times, it is also COLLABORATIVE SPIRIT associated with intense religious fervor. Even though the icons of most Hindu deities that are worshiped are made out of stone or metal, the image of Jagannath is wooden. Every twelve or nineteen years these wooden figures are ceremoniously replaced by using sacred trees, which have to be carved as an exact replica. The temple remains open from 5 am to 12 midnight. Special darshan or Parimanik darshan is when devotees on paying 50 Rupees are allowed right up to the deities. Parimanik darshan happens after the dhupa pujas at around 10 am, 1 pm and 8 pm. At all other times devotees can view the UNRELENTIN deities from some distance for free. Konark Sun Temple Konark is a medium town in the Puri district in the state of Odisha, India. It lies on the G DEDICATION coast by the Bay of Bengal, 65 kilometers from the capital of the state, Bhubaneswar. It is the site of the 13th-century Sun Temple, also known as the Black Pagoda, built in black granite during the reign of Narasimhadeva-I. The temple is a World Heritage Site. The temple is now mostly
