They met at the Widow Pratt's (The Royal Standard Tavern on Market Street), selected two surveyors, and laid down rules stipulating that at least one of them survey each house and write up reports that would be discussed by the entire Board, which would make decisions about the extent and rate of insurance. Franklin named the company The Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire. Already in 1736 he had helped to found Philadelphia's first fire brigade, the Union Fire Company. The Contributinship was a mutual insurance company that pooled risks. They based its method of operation (and name) on that of the Amicable Contributionship of London, founded in 1696. The new company was conservative in its underwriting, sending surveyors to inspect each building before insuring it. Accepted properties sported fire marks: four clasped gilded hands mounted on wood plaques. The actual cost of the survey was presumably deducted from the 10 shillings earnest money paid by every person insuring in the society. This also covered the costs of the policy and the "badge" or fire mark. Insurance at this time was limited to properties in Pennsylvania located within a ten mile radius from the center of Philadelphia. -

Child Welfare Social Work and the Promotion of Client Self-Determination Abstract Self-determination, the concept that individuals are qualified ot make their own decisions about their lives, is a central concept in the social work profession. It is described in the NASW Code of Ethics as one of a social worker’s primary ethical responsibilities, and it provides a framework for practitioners working with the many populations that social workers serve. Despite the NASW’s professional mandate, self- determination has been the subject of decades of discipline-wide debate. Proponents argue that self- determination is empowering and acknowledges that clients are the best resource on their own needs. Critics argue that one can never fully be self-determined and that social workers face an impossible dilemma: they must promote client self-determination while upholding societal and agency conventions, oftentimes, in contradiction with each other. Informed by the historical development of self-determination described in the professional social work literature, eleven, seasoned MSW level child welfare social workers were interviewed in a qualitative study. -

I will be relating that concept to his latest album release, “Letter to You” by analyzing track by track and attempting to find that common thread of connection that seems to speak so well to him and his audience. Why? I chose this topic and album because throughout this course I have really enjoyed dissecting Springsteen’s work and relating it to a bigger picture. As I have progressed throughout this course, I have been able to elevate my writing and approach song analysis in a new, more refined way. I also felt as though choosing “Letter to You” would allow for me to make the most accurate interpretation of what Springsteen is trying to say in the current moment since it just got released a few months ago. Overall, I wanted to write about this because it allows for some creative freedom, a stream of consciousness and a continuation of the work I have been trying to perfect over the semester in this class. -

Journalists and biographers and film historians have been dipping W into Bergman’s life (1915–1982) so relentlessly for so long that it is easy to forget that it wasn’t always in the public domain. The woman’s career, off and on screen, started being dissected so minutely so many decades ago that just about the only survivors from all those labors are her children and a hand- ful of actors from the already-41-year-old Murder on the Orient Express. In short, and though many of us are loath to admit it, the world of Ingrid Bergman seems to have warp-sped away from us to distances we might not have thought possible. It may not be as remote as Planet Garbo, but it is still out there, back in that century they used to call the 20th with an air of self-satisfaction making it sound like the tiniest of steps before infinity. (“My God, man, it’s the 20th century!”) There is, of course, the record of her many performances—filmed, kinescoped, taped, digitized, hologrammed, whatever technical development preserves them next.
