A Family Chronicle Shadows” by Valeriy Shevchuk Summary: The article presents a study of the historical foundations of the chronicle novel ”The Vanishing Shadows. A Family Chronicle” by Vale- riy Shevchuk. The attention is focused on the writer’s interpretation of historical events in the late 18th century. The social and ideological, discursive processes of the reproduced historical period are analyzed. An integral perception of the history of our country is presented in an inseparable connection between the past and the present. The critical moments in Ukrainian history were outlined as the background against which some urgent, vital problems of either a single individual or the whole ethnic group were shown. Serhiy Ivanyuk Office 117, 3-d corp. 2, Skovoroda St. Course Objectives: Ukrhainan Literature of the XX Century:Run into the Accident of the Totalitarianismis an introductory course on one of the most dramatic period of the history of Ukrainian Literature, i.e. the XX century. The course explores the features of Ukrainian modernism, totalitarian literature, oeuvres of shistdesyatnyks (generation of the 60-s), and high modernism of the 80-90-ies. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, students will be able to: - identify and compare the features of modernism in the Ukrainian literature of the 20-ies of the XX century; - measure totalitarian character of the Ukrainian literature in the 30- ies – 70-ies; - identify and analyze the features of totalitarian discourse in the modern world literature and arts; - identify and discuss the postcolonial discourse of the modern Ukrainian literature. Lectures and Readings Lectures will run for 1 hour 20 minutes every day. In order to see the connection between different arts (painting, sculpture, architecture) some lecture hours will be devoted to visiting the museums and tours around the city. Reading materials for this course will be copied by a professor. It will be the texts by the prominent Ukrainian writers of each period of the XX century: modernist poems of the 20-ies, samples of the social realism and high modernism of the 60-ies and the 80-ies. 1 Course description It is hard to find Ukrainian literature on the world literature map.

This article considers the Soviet western borderlands' contribution to its demise. Turning to the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, it suggests that late Soviet politics of empire integrated Western Ukrainians into one Soviet polity. In the late phases of Khrushchev's "Thaw," the literary journal of Lviv's Writers' Union, Zhovten (October), from 1964 to 1966 became a forum that accommodated local and national interests while adhering to an all-Soviet imperial canon. The dismiss­ al of its editor, poet Rostyslav Bratun', did not completely end the journal's approach to literary expression. Writers like Bratun' remained very active in the public sphere. Drawing on studies of the Soviet Union and other empires, this article rejects binary oppositions between state and society and between imperial centers and colonial peripheries. It sees the power of imperial imagi­ nations affecting regional and national identities1 It suggests instead that un­ resolved debates over issues like literature, language, and historical memory made these borderlands' integration very problematic.

Several copies of it reached the West. Our edition is an English translation of the Ukrainian text which appeared in the periodical Liberation Path, Lon­ don, Nos. VI and VII-VIII, 1971. The illustra- tions-portraits of Alla Horska, Valentyn Moroz and Vasyl Symonenko, as well as the index were added by the publishers. The poetry was translated by Vera Rich, an English poetess. Footnotes were prepared by Dr. Nicholas G. Bohatiuk, Professor of Economics, Le Moyne College. THE TASK OF THE “UKRAINSKYI VISNYK”1 The necessity for such an uncensored publication arose long ago in Ukraine. There are many problems which evoke the general interest of and disturb wide circles of the Ukrai­ nian community, but these are never explained by the official press. When, on the rare occasions the press does mention these problems under the pressure of circumstances, it resorts to conscious falsification. The “Visnyk”2 includes without generalization information about the violations of the freedom of speech and other demo­ cratic freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution, about the judicial and extra-judicial repressions in Ukraine, about the violation of national sovereignty (facts about chauvinism and Ukrainophobia), about the attempts to misinform the public, about the situation of Ukrainian political prisoners in prisons and camps, about various acts of protest and so on.

Introduction General review of Ukrainian literature translations into English allows us to note certain tendencies from the very first glance; they are different from translation process of any other national literature, which is first of all explained by historical and political factors. In their turn, these factors defined the nature of translations strictly by geographic principle, i.e. English- language translations performed on the European continent and beyond. Still, we can objectively state that the latter dominate over the former. In our opinion, there are solid reasons for that, as it is in the United States of America, Canada and Australia that powerful scientific centres and Ukrainian studies institutions are located; those were established thanks to the efforts of Ukrainian intellectuals emigrating to these parts of the world after World War II.

SILVER SPRING, Md. – More than 500 people, including 70 clergymen, attended the enthronement of Metropolitan-Archbishop Antony on January 25-26 as the fourth metropolitan of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the U.S.A., during a ceremony at St. Andrew the First-Called Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. Enthronement services began at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, January 25, with an all-night vigil served by the Rev. Anthony Perkins, who was joined by his parish choir from Holy Archangel Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Woonsocket, R.I. Approximately 200 people were in atten- dance, following a winter storm that brought about four inches of snow to the area. On Saturday morning, hierarchs were led in procession from the parish residence to the cathedral. Introduction Common Slavic ethnical and language roots, similar motives of folklore and decorative art, comparable beliefs and customs, dynastical ties as well as common history of many centuries created a solid foundation for development of Ukrainain-Polish relations. Researchers were especially interested in the problem of Ukrainian-Polish culture ties. They started treating this issue in a systemic way in early 19th century, first of all due to the existence of “Ukrainian school” in Polish romantic literature. However, understanding of these contacts is possible only if their whole history is reviewed in a comprehensive way. To present the development of these relations in a consistent way, we use time periods offered by G. Grabovich4, according to which the history of Polish-Ukrainian literary relations is divided into four main periods or stages, which are more or less similar for both literatures. The first period singled out by the researcher has no clearly defined beginning and end.
