Walking Away from the Runway Thesis – One Year Master Textile Manage ment Christina Christodoulou Year: 2015. Thesis id number: 2015.11.06 Acknowledgements I would like to wholeheartedly thank my supervisor David Goldsmith for his guidance and knowledge and most of all for his positive spirit. Also, I would like to thank my parents who really supported me the whole year with their love under any circumstances. Thanks to the designers who accepted to participate in my group discussion and enlightened my thesis with their ideas. Lastly, the paper is dedicated to my favourite uncle that I lost during the master thesis. He was a smiley person who loved to be educated. English title: Walking Away from the Runway Year of publication: 2015 Author/s: Christina Christodoulou Supervisor: David Goldsmith Abstract Fashion shows in a common western context were focused on the garments that were presented. Albeit, the latest decades a shift has been observed from what is presented to how it is presented to the audiences. Particular designers are the leaders of this evolution. Does this phenomenon imply something long term for the fashion system and how fashion is displayed? The purpose of the research is to inquire into the metamorphosis of the runway presentations from the expected status quo to new forms. The compass of this exploration is an observation about fashion shows in retrospect and a focus group discussion with fashion designers master students from the Swedish School of Textiles. It contributes an insight into designers’ approach towards fashion presentations, yet it is used as tool to enable them illustrate their vision on their future presentations.

Fashion Weeks Info pack Ethical Fashion Hackathon 6th May 2020 Fashion Weeks Introduction Fashion weeks expose the enormous flaw at the heart of the fashion industry business model: the cost to people and the planet. In the last 12 months, the fashion show circuit (NY, London, Milan, Paris) emitted 241,000 tonnes of CO2. The equivalent of lighting up Times Square for 58 years. In 2020, is this still justifiable? Huge swathes of our industry flying across the world to view a 12 minute runaway show featuring collections that will mostly be displayed and sold online? These events are moments of both celebration of beauty and art as well as commercial platforms to feed a hungry business model, structured in an organisational form that pays no attention to sustainability. They run one after the other, forcing industry staff to travel frantically from here to there (via land, sea and air), while producers work in emergency-like conditions to have products ready for the shows, causing an imbalance in personal health and mental well being. In the meantime, consumers are bombarded by a mountain of images and faces of influencers, very few of whom acknowledge how these goods are made or their impact on people’s lives and on the natural world. All this while our planet risks extinction. Asks ● For editors and buyers being present in the physical space of a live show is “the experience”. The multisensory journey to see, touch and feel the collections and interacting with designers is paramount. Can digital, AR and VR replace this “experience”? Is it only a generational issue or does it go deeper? ● How could we recreate the “buzz” of fashion weeks --the exclusivity, celebrity, networking i.e.

This paper shifts attention to identifying the sites at which diverse specialisations meet to concentrate and amplify mutually reinforcing circuits of value. These valorisation processes are demonstrated in the case of Australian Fashion Week, an event in which multiple interests converge to synchronize different expressions of fashion ideas, actively construct fashion markets and enhance the value of a diverse range of fashionable commodities.

Almatourism Special Issue N. 09, 2018: Kalbaska N., Ayala Ramírez E., Cantoni L., The Role of Tourism Destinations within the Online Presence of Fashion Weeks Almatourism Journal of Tourism, Culture and Territorial Development ___________________________________________________________ The Role of Tourism Destinations within the Online Presence of Fashion Weeks Kalbaska, N.* Ayala Ramírez, E.† Cantoni, L.‡ USI – Università della Svizzera italiana (Lugano, Switzerland) ABSTRACT Special events, if well organized, assist a tourism destination to improve its image and attract new visitors. Though there is an emerging research on the connection between tourism destinations and fashion events, little is known about how online presence of tourism destinations is framed with the help of established fashion events. The purpose of this research is to study four primary destinations holding major fashion weeks: New York and “New York Fashion Week”, London and “London Fashion Week”, Milan and “Milan Fashion Week”, Paris and “Paris Fashion Week”. This research identifies the role of tourism destinations in the online presence of the four primary “fashion weeks”. To do so, two converging analyzes are done: on one hand the websites and online presence of the fashion weeks are analyzed, assessing tourism related content; on the other hand, the websites of Destination Management Organizations at the city level are inspected with the main aim of assessing the presence and relevance they provide to fashion weeks. _________________________________________________________ Keywords: Destination Branding; Tourism Marketing; Fashion Weeks; Event Management; Website Design; Digital Fashion * E-mail address: [email protected] † E-mail address: [email protected] ‡ E-mail address: [email protected] almatourism.unibo.it – ISSN 2036-5195 – https://doi.org/10.6092/issn.2036-5195/7245 87 This article is released under a Creative Commons - Attribution 3.0 license.

  • Fashion Week Debuts New Look in 2020
Media Release Monday, 2 December 2019 FASHION WEEK DEBUTS NEW LOOK IN 2020 The public will be able to enjoy designer runway shows on the same night as media and industry at a new-look Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia in 2020. The new format will unfold over five days from Monday 11 May 2020 to Friday 15 May and brings consumers and industry closer together than ever before. MBFWA celebrates 25 years in 2020, and is supported by strategic sponsor Destination NSW, the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency. Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the new MBFWA schedule provided fashion lovers with an exclusive opportunity to enjoy the latest Resort styles. “Sydney is undoubtedly the fashion capital of Australia, with strong track record in globally celebrated design and a $9.42 billion retail industry,” Minister Ayres said. “Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia is an event the world’s fashion industry looks to as a leader - we have so many great Australian designers who either started or developed their careers through Fashion Week in Sydney. This new direction is exciting because consumers will be an even bigger part of the event and industry picture.” The move follows a similar model set by London Fashion Week in 2019 where the public could purchase tickets to key designer runway shows at the September event. For MBFWA 2020 the public may purchase tickets to select designer shows on the official 5-day schedule, attend seminars and special events, and access VIP packages via MBFWA: The Experience.

  • Fashion Changes Shape, in the Time of COVID 19 FBS C19 Issue 7: 19.06.20
Fashion Changes Shape, In the Time of COVID_19 FBS C19 Issue 7: 19.06.20 It is entirely indicative of the times we live in, that the title and focus of this issue changed during forty-eight hours. As stated previously this is not a political newsletter, it’s a fashion focussed report to offer information both during full lockdown, and as lockdown shifts. Its horizons are global and also encompass the arts in general, as these often run parallel to fashion and style. So, what are we looking at specifically in this issue? The big brands, cultural style mistakes, celebrities & influencers, technology and local versus global are amongst the topics below, but why? Because things are changing, but not in one simple all embracing ‘easy to wrap’ package. ! "! ! ! Everything is shifting and being discussed, from the serious, with obviously COVID 19 and Black Lives Matter as the two prime examples, to the serious in relation to the fashion world. How will the coming seasons work, what will happen about about sales and price reductions, can we still support very cheap clothing made in terrible factory and worker conditions? ‘The death of the fashion show’, or simply the “hot item” of the week point us to think about these established components of the fashion construction. This is week seven of these reports, and everything we’ve included is factual, and the endless discussions posing unanswerable questions have been excluded. We do not know at this point the real facts of the future of fashion, simply because we are still inside the COVID 19 situation.
