● ● ● ● ● Photo by Lois Greenfield. About the Performance The Performance at a Glance Each of these different elements can be the basis for introducing students to the upcoming performance. Who are the Trinity Irish Dance Company? Trinity Irish Dance Company were formed in 1990 by Mark Howard in an effort to showcase Irish music and dance as an art form. The company is made up of 18- 25 year olds, and has received great critical and popular acclaim from audiences throughout the world. They have performed all over the world, and have collaborated with many notable contemporary choreographers and musicians. Trinity holds a unique place in the dance world, offering a highly skilled presenation of progressive Irish step dance. Who is Mark Howard? Mark Howard is the founder and artistic director of the Trinity Irish Dance Company, and choreographs much of the company’s work. Born in Yorkshire, England, and raised in Chicago, Mark Howard began dancing at the age of nine, and later went on to become a North American champion Irish dancer. He started the Trinity Academy of Irish Dance at the age of 17, and dancers from this school have won 18 world titles for the United States at the World Irish Dance Championships in Ireland. Howard wanted to find a way for his dancers to do more than just compete for tropies and prizes, so in 1990 he founded the Trinity Irish Dance Company as a way to showcase Irish music and dances as an art form. Mark Howard continues to choregraph new works for the company, and he has expanded his independent career to work in theater, television, concert and film. -

You can use this study guide to engage your students and enrich their Zoellner Arts Center field trip. Materials in this guide include information about the performance, what you need to know about coming to a show at Zoellner Arts Center and interesting and engaging activities to use in your classroom prior to and following the performance. Far more than its population merits, Ireland is a coun- try whose sons and daughters lead much of the world. Here in the United States men Commentary and women of Irish heritage have an enormous influence over education, politics, business, our armed forces and religious life. College presidents, chief executives, governors, senators, and other leaders are proud of their Irish heritage, and effective in their jobs. With last month’s resignation of Enda Kenny as Taoiseach and as leader of the major political party Fine Gael, Ireland is searching for new leaders while probably facing new general elections within the year. Enda Kenny is a good man; perhaps not at the top of his class when it comes to intellectual matters, but a hardworking politician with enthusiastic people skills. He was born in Castlebar, Co. Peter Stanković Modernizacija tradicionalnega vzorca - primer irskega plesa Diplomsko delo Ljubljana, 2011 ZAHVALA: Prvo bi se rada zahvalila svojima staršema, ki sta me spodbujala v vseh letih študija in sestri, ki je vedno verjela vame. Posebna zahvala gre tudi Joan McIntyre, ki me je popeljala v svet irskih korakov in članom Šole irskega plesa, ki poskrbijo, da je irski ples več kot le ples. Hvala tudi mentorju Petru Stankoviću za pomoč in nasvete pri izdelavi naloge. Modernizacija tradicionalnega vzorca - primer irskega plesa Vsaka kultura je organiziran svet pomenov, saj v njej obstaja samo tisto, kar kultura definira. Tradicija kulture se nenehno obnavlja s prenosom kulturnih vzorcev. Ta predstavlja kombinacijo kulturnih elementov, saj za vsako kulturo obstaja nek spekter možnih vedenj. Da vzorec lahko deluje, ga morajo posamezniki poznati in se ga naučiti. Skozi proces socializacije postanejo posamezniki člani družbe in tipični predstavniki neke kulture. Naučijo se jezika, navad, običajev, telesnih tehnik. Telesne tehnike so procesi, kjer posamezniki uporabljajo svoje telo na nek specifičen način, ki so se ga naučili v procesu prenosa tradicije iz generacije v generacijo. Ples je ena takih tehnik. Vsaka kultura ima edinstvene plesne značilnosti, ki se razlikujejo ko primerjamo plese ene kulture z drugimi. Članom irske kulture je irski ples postal del nacionalne kolektivne identitete. Ena ključnih značilnosti irskega plesa je tog in nepremičen zgornji del telesa, medtem ko noge izvajajo serijo hitrih in ritmično raznolikih korakov. -

Blas International Summer School of Irish Traditional Music and Dance Irish World Academy of Music and Dance University of Limerick DANCE TUTORS COLIN DUNNE Colin Dunne is a leading figure in the world of traditional Irish dance, who has made the cross over into contemporary dance and theatre. Best known internationally for his performances and choreography in Riverdance and Dancing on Dangerous Ground, he has been forging a new creative path since his time as artist in residence at University of Limerick where he completed an MA in contemporary dance in 2002. In 2007 he was nominated for a UK Critics Circle National Dance Award (best male: modern dance) for performances at The Barbican in Fabulous Beast’s production of The Bull. His first solo show Out of Time premiered in January 2008. Colin Dunne was born in 1968 in Birmingham, England to Irish parents. He took his first lesson in Irish step dance at the age of three with the locally based Comerford School. At the age of 9, he won his first World Championship title and was the first dancer to win the World, All England and All Ireland titles in the same year. From the age of 12 he was taught by Marion Turley in Coventry and when he retired from competition at the age of 22, he had won a total of nine World, eleven Great Britain, nine All Ireland and eight All England titles. He was influenced from an early age by tap dance – Gregory Hynes in particular – which contributed to his often complex approach to rhythm within the structures of traditional Irish music. -
