Modern Alternative Popes* Magnus Lundberg Uppsala University The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) is arguably the most important event in modern Catholicism, and a major act on the twentieth-century religious scene at large. On several points, the conciliar fathers made changes in how the Catholic Church perceived the modern world. The language in the decrees was different from earlier councils’, and the bishops opened up for ecumenism and interreligious dialogue, seeing at least “seeds of truth” in other religious traditions. The conciliar fathers also voted in favour of liberty of religion, as meaning something more than the right to practise Catholic faith. A very concrete effect of the Council was the introduction of the New Mass Order (Novus Ordo Missae) in 1969 that replaced the traditional Roman rite, decreed by Pius V in 1570. Apart from changes in content, under normal circumstances, the new mass should be read in the vernacular, not in Latin as before. Though many Catholics welcomed the reforms of Vatican II, many did not. In the period just after the end of the Council, large numbers of priests and nuns were laicized, few new priest candidates entered the seminaries, and many laypeople did not recognize the church and the liturgy, which they had grown up with. In the post- conciliar era, there developed several traditionalist groups that criticized the reforms and in particular the introduction of the Novus Ordo. Their criticism could be more or less radical, and more or less activist. Many stayed in their parishes and attended mass there, but remained faithful to traditional forms of devotions and paid much attention to modern Marian apparitions. -

MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL CHAPEL REACHE S 25 YEAR S n November 23, 2008, the faithful at St. Michael the Archangel Church in FARMINGVILLE, NY celebrated their chapel’s 25th anniversary with a Solemn High Mass followed by a banquet which Oincluded a slideshow on the chapel’s history. Centrally located on Long Island, the chapel’s development began over a decade before its establishment in November 1983, and was often near the historical eye of the SSPX’s formative years in the United States of America. In fact, two of its original parishioners would exercise a substantial impact in the early history of the SSPX’s apostolate in the United States. The flash point for the chapel’s inception occurred in April 1970 with the introduction of the St. Michael the Archangel Church as it appears today. Portier This dissertation examines the theological work of John Hugo by looking at its roots within the history of Ignatian spirituality, as well as within various nature-grace debates in Christian history. It also attempts to situate Hugo within the historical context of early twentieth-century Catholicism and America, particularly the period surrounding the Second World War. John Hugo (1911-1985) was a priest from Pittsburgh who is perhaps best known as Dorothy Day‟s spiritual director and leader of “the retreat” she memorialized in The Long Loneliness. Throughout much of American Catholic scholarship, Hugo‟s theology has been depicted as rigorist and even labeled as Jansenist, yet it was embraced by and had a great influence upon Day and many others. -

One of the corrosive effects of such an “immediate” world is the loss of a sense of history. That sense has nothing to do with the sense of nostalgia for better times in the past – in the Church and across societies. It is the sad outcome of a failure in many education systems around the world to properly value the study of history. Massimo Faggioli is one significant remedy to that deficiency as far as the Catholic Church is concerned. Catholic History and Law A helpful comparison is found by comparing the Church and its evolution to the establishment and growth of the rule of law because a thorough grasp of history is important to understanding good legal practice and the value and the circumstances within which a statute is created by legislatures and courts. My Petition for Spiritual Help From Patrick Henry During December, 2007, a friend, who attended the Mass of Father Joseph, sent an email saying Father Joseph wanted to visit with me. Arrangements were made, and we met December 26, 2007. Father Joseph Noonan, OFM, was ordained by Bishop Louis Vezelis, OFM. He is mainly located now in Lubbock, Texas. However, he goes out to other “missions” in Arizona, California, and other places. During our visit I asked Father Joseph how he has jurisdiction. Father Joseph’s explanation was that Bishop Vezelis received ordinary jurisdiction at the time he was consecrated, and then he delegates jurisdiction to the priests. Father Joseph did not have any books with him, so he could not show any reference sources that explain how bishops automatically receive jurisdiction as a result of their consecration. I was asked to go to the Friars’ website for the information, and if I did not find it, to contact Bishop Vezelis and Bishop Giles. I asked the bishops if they would please explain two major things: 1) How Traditional Movement bishops and priests have ordinary and delegated jurisdiction. 2) How they were consecrated, and how did they consecrate others without sin being committed and excommunications taking place. Combined Response March 19, 2020 St. Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church, pray for us! Greetings my friends, Praised be Jesus, Mary, and St. Joseph now and forever. Rather than give the names of some friends who wrote me emails and asked me to correspond with them and answer questions, in this letter on the public website I am only going to refer to them as F1 (as one friend), F2 (as another friend), F3 (as another friend), F4 (as another friend). F1 sent me an email March 5, 2020 and asked “What do you think of the following”; and then he sent information that was mostly taken from the CMRI website. Correspondence went back and forth for a while, and although I have other daily duties to also be taken care of, I will herein provide some information – although it will not be the complete in depth answers to explain about all of the articles accessed from the hyperlinks F1 sent me. Not long after F1 and I exchanged a few emails, another correspondence through email took place with F2. In the meantime, while I have been writing this letter, F3 also sent me an email asking me to comment on information from F4’s website.
