MAYO 2011 “Efectos antidiabéticos en extractos de jarabes de agave y evaluación de su contenido de fenólicos y actividad antioxidante” Resumen Agave L. pertenece a la familia Agavaceae y forma parte de las tradiciones religiosas, alimentarias y medicinales de México y Latinoamérica. Ancestralmente ha sido utilizado en el tratamiento de enfermedades crónico-degenerativas como la Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Dado que compuestos fenólicos de diversas matrices biológicas han reportado capacidad de secretar insulina y de inhibir la actividad de enzimas digestivas que hidrolizan hidratos de carbono, entre otros efectos, el objetivo de este proyecto fue evaluar la capacidad de los extractos de jarabes de agave (A. atrovirens Karw) para ejercer los mencionados efectos. Para profundizar nuestro conocimiento se caracterizaron dichos extractos obtenidos con 2 disolventes (acetona y metanol) a partir de 3 jarabes en función de la cantidad de compuestos fenólicos y su actividad antioxidante medida por el método ORAC. La capacidad secretora de insulina de los extractos se determinó por un método ELISA en células de insulinoma de páncreas y la inhibición de liberación de glucosa en un ensayo enzimático in vitro. Los valores más altos del contenido de fenólicos totales y de la actividad antioxidante fueron encontrados en los extractos obtenidos con acetona (19.26 ± 0.42 mg EAG/g extracto, 180.42 ± 2.62 µmol ET/g extracto), sin embargo su rendimiento de extracción (5- 6%) fue cinco veces menor que en los extractos obtenidos con metanol (20-27%). Los extractos metanólicos del jarabe Mimex y Nazario fueron los que presentaron actividad antidiabética más alta. El extracto metanólico del jarabe Mimex mostró un valor de insulina secretada (6.43 ± 0.76 ng/mL, concentración de 200µg/mL) similar al de la glibenclamida (6.99 ± 0.57 ng/mL, concentración de 200µM), un hipoglucemiante oral ampliamente utilizado en pacientes diabético. Mientras que el extracto metanólico del jarabe Nazario disminuyó el índice glucémico (28.27 ± 2.96 % inhibición en invertasa y 42.74 ± 3.06 % inhibición en amiloglucosidasa). Se determinó que el compuesto responsable de la capacidad secretora de insulina no pertenece al grupo de compuestos fenólicos. Mientras que la inhibición de la liberación de glucosa posiblemente se debe a la presencia de moléculas hidroxiflavononas que actúan en sinergia en el extracto. Finalmente se concluye que los extractos del jarabe de agave son alimentos nutracéuticos en la profilaxis y el tratamiento de DM.     LEARNING ECOLOGY: ETHNOBOTANY IN THE SIERRA TARAHUMARA, MEXICO by FELICE SEA WYNDHAM (Under the Direction of Brent Berlin) ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates social-environmental factors contributing to differential ethnobotanical expertise among children in Rarámuri (Tarahumara) communities in Rejogochi, Chihuahua, Mexico. This research contributes to understanding processes of transmission and acquisition of environmental knowledge and to the development of an ecological, interactionist model of indigenous education. The first section describes an ethnography of Rarámuri childhood, focusing on children’s life stages, work, play, and family environments. Some aspects of Rarámuri epistemologies of learning are explored. Among these is the importance of relationship maintenance through ritual and thinking/behaving well. Structured interviews with Rarámuri children between the ages of 5 and 18 showed consensus as to the primary importance of mothers, fathers, aunts and uncles as teachers of plant knowledge. Secondarily, siblings, cousins and playmates were identified as teachers. The second section presents a quantitative study of children’s knowledge of a set of 40 culturally significant local plants in three use-categories: medicinal, edible, and other material utility. The social-environmental factors significant in predicting levels of plant knowledge among children were, most notably, which primary school (of two local choices) children attended and, to a lesser extent, age of the child completing the interview. Plant-name and plant-use interviews suggest that many children today are not acquiring their parents’ full repertoire of plant knowledge, but rather, exhibit knowledge of a restricted set of plants that are most salient culturally and ecologically. The discussion of results highlights the importance of understanding how knowledge distribution patterns correspond to social relationships, social roles, and individual and family interest and experience.

    St. George Jeepers Trail Report Jump Canyon on the Arizona Strip, Tuesday, 05-16-2017 Sixteen vehicles congregating at the Highway 7, Airport Parkway/River Road air-down location on the Arizona border. The run today was led by Joan and Phil Hayes and tail gunners were Carol Steck and Bud Sanders. The trip today was made even more enjoyable due to many wildflowers in full bloom. After departing the Utah/Arizona border we drove south on BLM 1068, Rt. 5, also known as the Mt. Trumbull Loop. We turned west on County Highway 101. Then, down past Shoe Buckle Canyon into Upper Jump Canyon. We proceeded on into St. George Canyon, traveling temporarily on the Nutter Twist Road. We entered the Grand Cliff Wilderness and drove on to Upper Jump Canyon. We then entered Rd. 1007 and circle back until we retraced our track on Highway 101. Below, one of the Beardtongue penstemons Prickly poppy, Argemone pleiacantha (or platycerus) Scarlet Bugler, also called firecracker penstemon-Penstemon centranthifolius (or Penstemon eatonii) This species commonly hybridizes with Showy penstemon (Penstemon spectabilis), a species with wide- mouthed purple-blue flowers, to produce a penstemon with pinkish-purple flowers which is intermediate in size named Penstemon parishii. P. centranthifolius is native to California and is also found east of California, but is confined to western North America. Penstemons along the trail, likely Palmer's penstemon "Penstemon palmeri" Engelmann’s prickly pear cactus- Opuntia engelmannii Engelmann’s cactus is a prickly pear common across the south-central and Southwestern United States and northern Mexico.

Based on our own field experience, there are at least 800 plants used for treating diabetes nowadays. Thus, their investigation is essential. In this context, this work aims to provide a comprehensive and critical review of the molecules isolated from Mexican hypoglycemic plants, including their source and target tested. In the last few years, some researchers have focused on the study of Mexican hypoglycemic plants. Most works describe the hypoglycemic effect or the mechanism of action of the whole extract, as well as the phytochemical profile of the tested extract. Herein, we analyzed 85 studies encompassing 40 hypoglycemic plants and 86 active compounds belonging to different classes of natural products: 28 flavonoids, 25 aromatic compounds, other than flavonoids, four steroids, 23 terpenoids, 4 oligosaccharides, and 1 polyalcohol. These compounds have shown to inhibit α-glucosidases, increase insulin secretion levels, increase insulin sensitivity, and block hepatic glucose output. Almost half of these molecules are not common metabolites, with a narrow taxonomic distribution, which makes them more interesting as lead molecules.

This report examines the status of recommendations that grew from the 2001 Native Plant Program report, written by County staff as part of the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan. Pima County has completed most of the recommended actions in the Native Plant Program, thereby minimizing some of the more harmful aspects of urban development on native plants and plant communities, and creating a more beautiful and sustainable urban landscape. Participating departments have included Transportation, Flood Control, Water Reclamation, Development Services, Sustainability and Conservation, Natural Resources and Parks and Recreation, and Community Services and Development. Key achievements that support the recommended actions include: • Protecting the wildlife habitat values that ironwood trees, saguaro cacti, and other native plants provide; • Reducing and offsetting damage to riparian habitats during development by requiring mitigation; • Using tens of thousands of native plants for County public works projects supplied by the Pima County native plant nursery; • Minimizing impacts to the endangered Pima Pineapple Cactus and protecting its habitat; • Showcasing the beauty of native plants in prominent settings, such as the County courthouse and public libraries, to promote their use more widely; • Improving the opportunities for salvaging and re-using cacti, agaves and other native plants in the landscape; • Integrating native plants into water harvesting and other low-impact development strategies; • Leading efforts to manage invasive species on County lands and rights-of-way; and • Assisting in the creation of the Southern Arizona Buffelgrass Coordination Center.

    The Vegetation of White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico Volume I Handbook of Vegetation Communities The Vegetation of White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico1 Volume I: Handbook of Vegetation Communities Esteban Muldavin, Yvonne Chauvin, and Glenn Harper2 2000 ________________________________________________________________________________________________ SUMMARY A vegetation classification and a vegetation map from satellite imagery were developed for White Sands Missile Range of southern New Mexico to be used in environmental review (NEPA and Endangered Species Act) and for general natural resources planning. Volume I, Handbook of Vegetation Communities, outlines the vegetation classification for White Sands Missile Range and provides detailed ecological descriptions of the vegetation communities. Volume II presents a vegetation map of WSMR based on the vegetation classification along with details of map production, an annotated legend, and map unit descriptions. The vegetation classification presented in this volume is based on 1,739 ground survey points collected from 1991 through 1995. Using the species and environmental data from these plots, the classification was developed using agglomerative cluster analysis and table sorting techniques. It is structured in conformance with the National Vegetation Classification System data standard and the New Mexico Vegetation Classification. A total of 193 plant associations were described from among 52 Alliances. Of these, 71 were major associations with relatively wide distribution on White Sands Missile Range and typically were primary components or inclusions in map units presented in Volume II. An additional 122 were minor associations with limited mapped distributions. The majority of the plant associations (124) were well documented with data from White Sands Missile Range or elsewhere in the Southwest and are now considered established types in the NMNHP New Mexico Vegetation Classification.
