RESUMO A cultura da convergência abarca a questão tecnológica do fluxo de conteúdos, ocorrendo através de múltiplos suportes midiáticos e as questões de mudança de comportamento do público, que se apropria das redes digitais para buscar de diferentes experiências de entretenimento e de informação. Os sujeitos buscam um produto midiático que não se finde na sua própria exibição, mas sim proponha conteúdos que vão além de um único dispositivo de distribuição e necessitem do engajamento do público para que aconteçam efetivamente. Os fãs são personagens centrais da mudança na forma de operar da mídia de massa por serem pioneiros na adaptação às novas tecnologias de comunicação e informação e nos processos de produção e consumo participativos. A partir disso, esta pesquisa busca um olhar sobre as interações que fazem parte do comportamento dos fãs, tanto nas relações entre eles quanto com a indústria midiática. Para tanto, estudam-se os fãs de Star Wars, mais especificamente, os membros do Conselho Jedi do Rio Grande do Sul (CJRS), a fim de que através de um objeto empírico, consolidado e permanente se possa investigar o comportamento deste grupo no contexto de cultura da convergência, onde as interações entre eles e com o mercado de mídia são transformadas. ABSTRACT The convergence culture includes the technological issue of the content flow going through multiple media and the issues of changes in public behavior which appropriates itself of the digital networks seeking for different experiences of entertainment and information. The individuals look for a media product that doesn‟t finish itself in its own exhibition, but propose content that go beyond a single distribution device and require the engagement of the audience to actually happen. The fans are central characters in the change of mass media operating way because they are pioneers in adapting the new technologies of communication and information and in participatory processes of production and consumption. From this, this research seeks a look at the interactions that are part of the behavior of fans, both in relations between them and with the media industry. To this end, the Star Wars fans are studied, more specifically, the members of the Jedi Council of Rio Grande do Sul (CJRS), so that through a consolidated and permanent empirical object, it became possible to investigate the behavior of this group in the convergence culture context where the interactions between them and the media market are changed. The relationship between "misleading, often seductive advertising" and over-the-counter drugs and non-nutritional foodswas explored. Mr. Choate was_critical of previous attempts at advertising reform and points out several areas where, he said, the advertisers failed to follow through with previous pledges assuringmore straightforward ads. In conclusion, he called for more regulation, particularly by the FTC, Federal Drug Administration, and Federal Communications Commission, to tightly restrain the country's merchants from "coveting our children's purses."     45936 MOC Must Toys Book6 12/1/05 7:53 am Page 41 Some key toy manufacturers Britain Abbatt Toys Paul and Marjorie Abbatt were pioneers of innovative educational toys in the 1930s. They set up in business in 1932 selling toys to friends and by mail order from their flat in Tavistock Square, London. Demand was such that in 1936 they opened a child friendly shop at 94 Wimpole Street, designed by their friend the architect Ernö Goldfinger. The Abbatts were his main clients at the time and he designed toys and nursery equipment for them. They were concerned with the play needs of children in general, introducing a range of toys for children with physical disabilities devised by Milan Morgenstern. In 1951 they were instrumental in setting up the Children’s Play Activities Trust Ltd. to promote excellence in toy design and manufacture. After Paul Abbatt died in 1971 the business was bought by the Educational Supply Association. William Britain Ltd. Britains Ltd. was founded by William Britain in London in 1840. At first Britains made tin and clockwork toys and from the 1890s they made model soldiers. It also opened an office in Paris, France in 1905. The company made munitions for both world wars. In 1954 Herald miniatures, makers of unbreakable plastic toys, became a subsidiary of Britains. In 1966 Britains ceased to manufacture its metal soldiers. It was purchased by Ertl Co. in 1997. The Chad Valley Co. Ltd. The Chad Valley trademark was first registered in 1897 when the original company of Johnson Brothers added games to its stationery range.

This phenomenon can be described as an image transfer, or in a more commonly known term, merchandising, when distinct products and services are linked together with other events, in this case with the release of movies. This paper aims to explore the main characteristics of movie related merchandising and to study the various kinds of image transfer used by movies, their different form of appearances and their history and altogether the role merchandising plays among the other tools that are available to promote the release of a new movie. The paper's aims include mapping out the various channels used by merchandising to reach the consumers and to see how their perception have changed over time regarding the products and services involved (the goal is to expose the main theoretical correlations, while the primary research is not part of the paper). All the while the paper also seeks to find out what the possible criteria could be that a certain movie has to meet in order to be considered fit to use merchandising as a promotional tool (and in which period of the movie's life cycle do they emphasise it), what the main differences are between newly introduced intellectual properties and already existing well known brands of movie series (or "cinematic universes").

To mark that 75th anniversary, this book celebrates 75 years of innovation, invention, food and fun – both inside and outside the kitchen – in America and around the world. PROLOGUE 1 PROLOGUE It would be difficult to capture our rich history in a thousand pages. There are simply too many stories to tell. But this opportunity only comes once – and we couldn’t let it pass. On the 75th anniversary of the creation of General Mills – in our 137th year as a company – we wanted to pause to commemorate at least some of the historical highlights of a great American company. But where to start? With the creation of General Mills in 1928? Or at the beginning, on the banks of the Mississippi River in 1866? And what of the many companies with which General Mills has been intertwined? What of Pillsbury and Green Giant? What of Kenner and Parker Brothers, Red Lobster and Burger King? What of the products we invented together and the brands we built together? It was simple really. Pillsbury’s history is our history. Green Giant, Old El Paso, Colombo and Häagen-Dazs are here – alive within General Mills. Of the rest we chose to include a little of each, because they too are a part of us. And while we take no credit for the success they enjoy today, we are proud to have shared the same path for at least part of our shared history.

Yacobucci Graduate Faculty Representative Donald Callen Lisa Alexander © 2011 Stefan Hall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ronald Shields, Advisor Although seen as an emergent area of study, the history of video games shows that the medium has had a longevity that speaks to its status as a major cultural force, not only within American society but also globally. Much of video game production has been influenced by cinema, and perhaps nowhere is this seen more directly than in the topic of games based on movies. Functioning as franchise expansion, spaces for play, and story development, film-to-game translations have been a significant component of video game titles since the early days of the medium. As the technological possibilities of hardware development continued in both the film and video game industries, issues of media convergence and divergence between film and video games have grown in importance. This dissertation looks at the ways that this connection was established and has changed by looking at the relationship between film and video games in terms of economics, aesthetics, and narrative. Beginning in the 1970s, or roughly at the time of the second generation of home gaming consoles, and continuing to the release of the most recent consoles in 2005, it traces major areas of intersection between films and video games by identifying key titles and companies to consider both how and why the prevalence of video games has happened and continues to grow in power.
