SUMMARY – The Pauline Year 2008-2009 celebrates the second millennium of the birth of the great Apostle of the Nations. It is an occasion to recall Saint Eugene’s knowledge of, and devotion to Saint Paul. References to the Apostle’s writings date back to Eugene’s seminary days in Paris. His visits to Rome, specially in 1825-1826 shortly after the destruction by fire of Saint Paul’s Basilica, and in 1854 for the dedication of the newly rebuilt church, were occasions for Saint Eugene to express his fervour towards the Apostle whom he considered as a particular model and protector of missionaries. The A. recalls how in 1850, after meeting with the Bishop of Marseilles, the Bishop of Tulle exclaimed before his clergy: “Gentlemen, I have just seen Paul!” En cette année paulinienne voulue par le pape Benoît XVI pour commémorer le deuxième millénaire de la naissance de l’Apôtre des Nations, il nous paraît opportun de souligner la vénération que lui portait notre Fondateur et qui s’exprimait entre autres dans ses nombreuses citations des écrits de saint Paul, de même que dans la ferveur qui marquait ses visites aux lieux pauliniens lors de ses voyages à Rome. «J’ai vu Paul ...» Mgr Léonard Berteaud, évêque de Tulle de 1842 à 1878, a dit à ses vicaires généraux, après avoir rencontré l’évêque de Marseille les 15-17 août 1850: «Messieurs, j’ai vu Paul1». En le voyant pour la première fois, il a sans doute porté ce jugement suite à la bonne impression que lui laissa Mgr de Mazenod au cours de cette rencontre, mais aussi pour avoir entendu parler par quelques Oblats2 du zèle apostolique de ce prélat fondateur et supérieur général des Oblats de Marie Immaculée, missionnaires répandus sur quatre continents. S’il avait mieux connu Mgr de Mazenod, Mgr Berteaud aurait eu d’autres motifs pour dire: «J’ai vu Paul». En effet, le fondateur des Oblats connaissait bien les lettres de saint Paul qu’il citait souvent dans ses écrits; il avait également beaucoup de dévotion pour saint Paul, dévotion qui apparaît surtout lors de ses voyages à Rome. I. Saint Eugène connaissait bien les lettres de saint Paul Saint Eugène a, semble-t-il, lu et médité souvent l’Écriture sainte et surtout les lettres de saint Paul. Dans ses écrits (correspondance, Journal et mandements), il cite d’une façon explicite ou implicite 45 extraits de l’Ancien Testament et 152 du Nouveau Testament, dont 127 provenant des lettres de saint Paul3. Alors que ces lettres forment quantitativement moins d’un tiers du Nouveau Testament (environ 130 pages contre 280), 1 H. Les allusions à ces extraits sont cependant beaucoup plus nombreuses. Par exemple, on trouve dans une cinquantaine de lettres une allusion à Mathieu 6, 25-34: confiance en la Providence; ou encore, dans une trentaine de lettres une allusion à la lettre aux Philippiens I, 3-11: il aime les Oblats comme Paul aime les chrétiens. Au Séminaire Est-ce comme séminariste à Paris en 1808-1812 que Eugène de Mazenod a appris à connaître et aimer saint Paul? On ne peut l’affirmer. On sait que le professeur d’Écriture sainte était alors M. Garnier que Renan (1823-1892) désigna comme «l’homme le plus versé de France dans l’exégèse biblique, telle qu’elle s’enseignait chez les catholiques il y a une centaine d’années4». On ne conserve qu’une centaine de pages des notes d’Écriture sainte prises par Eugène. Il s’agit de quelques «Notes sur les livres de l’Ancien Testament» et surtout d’un «Commentaire des Évangiles5». Il n’y a pas de notes sur saint Paul. Cependant, Eugène a proposé deux méditations aux séminaristes ou aux élèves du grand catéchisme de Saint-Sulpice, une sur «La Parole de Dieu» et l’autre sur «La Conversion de saint Paul6». Chacune de ces deux méditations comprend quatre pages manuscrites. Dans la première, l’auteur explique que la Parole de Dieu doit être écoutée avec respect et avec docilité. Dans la seconde sur la conversion de saint Paul, l’auteur annonce que cette conversion a trois caractères principaux, mais ne donne ensuite des explications que de l’un d’entre eux: la générosité, la promptitude, avec laquelle saint Paul correspond à la grâce. Il ajoute que cette conversion a procuré la gloire de Dieu, a été utile au prochain et à l’Église, et avantageuse à saint Paul lui-même. Missionnaire Si Eugène de Mazenod parle peu de saint Paul au cours de son séminaire, au cours de sa vie il a toujours trouvé du temps chaque jour pour méditer, faire une lecture spirituelle et étudier l’Écriture sainte. Dans sa retraite de mai 1818, il écrit dans son règlement: de 7 heures à 7 h.1/2, étude de l’Écriture sainte. Les Règles des Oblats en faisaient un devoir aux Oblats7. Dans la lettre pastorale du 25 décembre 1837 à l’occasion de son installation comme évêque de Marseille, il écrit: «Nous avions assez médité les divines Écritures et surtout les admirables épîtres des apôtres de Jésus-Christ sur les devoirs des évêques […] pour être persuadé qu’il n’y avait pas en ce monde de charges plus difficiles…» Voici quelques exemples de la façon dont Mgr de Mazenod cite des extraits de lettres de saint Paul, choisis parmi ceux qu’il semble préférer. Au début de la congrégation le Fondateur a eu des adversaires parmi les curés d’Aix. En 1817, il rencontra à Paris le gr nouvel archevêque, M F. Bausset-Roquefort qui, prévenu par des prêtres d’Aix, dit qu’il 4 Jean LEFLON, Mgr de Mazenod…, vol. I (1782-1814). Sont-ils composés par lui-même ou proviennent-ils d’un ouvrage imprimé? On n’a pas d’indices qui nous orientent vers une réponse sûre. Cela fait voir cependant que le séminariste s’intéressait déjà à saint Paul. 7 Règles de 1826, deuxième partie, chapitre 2, paragraphe 2; Retraite de mai 1818. Aut.: AGR DM IV, 2. 3 ne le nommera pas vicaire général et semble même peu intéressé par les missions paroissiales. Le père de Mazenod se demande alors s’il pourra continuer ses œuvres en Provence, mais il se reprend et écrit au père Tempier, le 22 octobre: «Courage, je vous dirai comme saint Paul aux Éphésiens, 3, 13: ‘Je vous prie de ne pas vous laisser décourager à cause des afflictions que j’endure pour vous, elles sont votre gloire.’» Le père Tempier répond au nom des missionnaires: Il faut avouer que Dieu nous traite avec bien de la bonté, puisqu’il nous fait part des dons qu’il a faits à son propre fils […] Plût à Dieu que la Providence nous traitât toujours ainsi et surtout que nous y correspondions! Notre pauvre famille bien humiliée, bien méprisée, deviendrait bientôt toute sainte, et alors quels fruits. Le 31 octobre, le père de Mazenod remercie le père Tempier et assure qu’il se montrera digne de ses collaborateurs. Il cite ensuite, à la suite l’un de l’autre sept extraits de la deuxième épître à Timothée: C’est pour Dieu que nous souffrons, nous ne nous laisserons point abattre («C’est aussi pour cette raison que j’endure les souffrances présentes. Mais je n’en ai point honte…» 2 Tm 1, 12). Le démon triompherait de notre faiblesse puisque les âmes rachetées par Notre Seigneur seraient abandonnées. Continuons donc de travailler comme de bons soldats de Jésus-Christ. («Prends ta part de la peine comme un brave soldat de Jésus-Christ» 2 Tm 2, 3). Qu’importe, après tout, que quelques individus se soient révoltés contre nous? L’apôtre saint Paul fut plus maltraité que nous, car non seulement il fut abandonné par Démas, mais il rencontra un Alexandre qui lui fit beaucoup de mal, et tous ceux qui étaient en Asie s’éloignèrent de lui («Démas m’a quitté par amour pour le siècle…» 2 Tm 4, 10, 14; 1, 15). Et quand il dut défendre sa cause devant l’Empereur, personne ne l’assista, mais tous l’abandonnèrent («Dans ma première défense…» 2 Tm 4, 16). Mais il ne perdit pas courage pour cela, et par le puissant secours de Dieu il acheva ce que son ministère lui prescrivait et il fut délivré de la gueule du lion «Cependant le Seigneur m’a assisté…» 2 Tm 4, 17). Ce serait, en effet, une folie de vouloir faire le bien et ne point éprouver de contradictions («Tous ceux qui veulent vivre avec piété dans le Christ Jésus auront à souffrir persécution» 2 Tm 3, 12). Saint Paul en éprouva partout et n’en fut pas moins secouru par le Seigneur («…mes persécutions, mes souffrances…) Elles sont sans nombre…et chaque fois le Seigneur m’en a délivré» (2 Tm 3, 11)8.

    John Merlini and the Missionaries of the Precious Blood in the United States Barry Fischer, C.PP.S. Introduzione Certainly one of the most important developments in Don Giovanni Merlini’s long tenure as Moderator General was the expansion of the Congregation into the United States. The decision to send missionaries to America, and the first foundations there, began already in the time of his predecessor, Don Biago Valentini, when Fr. Francis de Sales Brunner and his little band of priests and seminarians were dispatched to America in 1843. But the crucial development came during the years of Merlini’s general direction. It was during those years that the Mission in America had to come to terms with circumstances very different from those found in Europe, and had to adapt the vision and rule of the C.PP.S. to them. The theme of the relationship of the Venerable Merlini and the United States, then, is important to understanding the achievement of the expansion of the Congregation into toally new circumstances. I will develop my relazione according to the following scheme. In keeping with the subtitle of this convegno, “Tempi e personalità”, I will first say a few words about the early contact of Ven. Merlini with Fr. Brunner, the pioneer and founder of the new Mission. Understanding something of their early contact helps us understand better their future relationship, upon which would be built decisions about the course of development of the American mission. After they had arrived at Gaeta, Don Merlini suggested that the pope make a vow to extend the feast of the Precious Blood to the entire Church, if he would again recover possession of the Papal States.

    Mary, Woman of the New Covenant Robert Schreiter, C.PP.S. Mary in the Life of the C.PP.S. Mary has always played an important role in the life of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. Don Beniamino Conti has already explained the place of Our Lady of the Precious Blood—or the Madonna of the Chalice, as she is also known—in the mission preaching of St. Gaspar and the early Missionaries. In the course of the Congregation’s history, Mary has been honored under a variety of titles. We know, for example, of the importance of the title “Mary, Help of Christians” to the Venerable Giovanni Merlini. For Fr. Francis Brunner, the veneration of Mary was promoted under the titles of Mother of God and the Sorrowful Mother. Fr. Brunner set up a shrine to the Sorrowful Mother in northwest Ohio in 1850, a shrine which con- tinues under the care of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood this day. In recent years, other images of Mary have been cre- ated. Perhaps most notably is that of Mary, Our Lady of the Precious Blood as “Qaloq’Lajna’ Aj Uk’Tesinel,” her title among the Q’ecqchí in Guatemala. In Q’ecqchí ritu- al, the sacred cacao drink is served to the chief members of the community, and then to everyone, by the young women of the community.     The Letters of St. Gaspar del Bufalo 1786 - 1837 !2 FORWORD In 1968 the Italian Province of the Society of Most Precious Blood published the first volume of the Lettere di S. Gaspare Del Bufalo. This represented the work of Father Luigi Contegiacomo, C.PP.S. Subsequently, Volumes II1 and II2 were published containing in all 484 letters of Saint Gaspar. The work of Father Luigi continues on the letters and other writings of our Founder still contained in the General Archives of the Society. The Parent Corporation of the American Provinces of the Society of the Precious Blood agreed to sponsor the translation into English and publication of the Italian work. A committee was formed consisting of Fathers Ralph Bushell, Lawrence Cyr and James Froelich. Father Raymond Cera agreed to undertake the translation of the Lettere into English. The work of translating the Italian volumes published to date is now finisheFr. Whereas the Italian publication presents the letters in groups according to the persons addressed, we have decided to present the letters according to their chronological origin. As a consequence of this decision the letters are being presented not in bound form but in a looseleaf format. Thus future translations of letters yet to be published can be inserted into the present binders according to the date of their origin.
