Summer at the Foreshore www.bayside.nsw.gov.au Summer Foreshore Enhancement Program 2019/20 The Bayside foreshore is a popular destination and an inner suburban oasis for locals. Over summer, we have a significant increase in visitors and usage of the foreshore area of Botany Bay from Kyeemagh to Dolls Point. This year Council has developed a summer foreshore program to help reduce our environmental footprint, preserve our beautiful marine life and beaches, and maintain safe and enjoyable community spaces for residents and visitors alike. What are some of the new program initiatives to the foreshore? Smoke Free Zone Breathe Easy Trial New smoke free trial zone from the start of Little Grand Parade (Bestic St) to the Brighton Kiosk. Education Campaign Watch your Butt You will see our ‘Watch Your Butt’ anti-smoking campaign signs targeting cigarette litter. Working Together The Summer Rangers are back with additional Police patrols and increased Waste and Parks services. They will be roaming the foreshore, attending events and encouraging visitors to act responsibly. Waste Education Don’t be a Tosser Council is providing extra rubbish bins, litter collections and beach cleans. We want to make it easy to keep our beaches, parks and foreshore reserves clean – and protect marine life. Bin Capacity Smart Sensors Overflowing bins are unsightly and lead to environmental damage. Bin sensors enable Council to know exactly which bins are ready to be emptied and collect data about peak usage periods. Waste Education with Local Businesses We recognise that we have a key role to play in the protection of the environment, but equally, we have a responsibility to provide the wider community with the knowledge and tools to preserve the environment. We’re working with local businesses to educate and to help provide resources encouraging their customers to act responsibly. Contact Council for more information on volunteer programs for community members and corporate businesses. What’s happening on the foreshore this summer? The Crab 2018 Sculptures @ Bayside Acquisition Prize Winner Artist: Joy Heylen The inspiration for the Crab sculpture is a play on scale; creating a GIANT momentous presence of a crustacean. The performance of Corten Steel blended with laser cut organic inspired patterns, capture industrial engineering and design concepts which fuse feminine and masculine intrigue. Corten, which is high tensile steel creates the strength in steel, and the orange colour of the steel changes naturally in the marine environment. She is also colloquially called ‘Big Bertha’. She has travelled far and wide in Australia and has been further developed to create a narrative about the unique red crab migration with animatronic moving baby crabs. Come Out, Come Out Hippo, Wherever You Are 2019 Sculptures @ Bayside Acquisition Prize Winner Artist: Gillie & Marc Schattner The game of hide and seek conjures feelings from our childhoods of safety, love, and joy. Gillie and Marc believe that all people and all creatures have the right to live in a world where safety and love are the rule, not the exception. Unfortunately, safety is often seen as a privilege rather than a right for many species of animal and endangered species have had to hide from humankind for far too long. With Come Out, Come Out Hippo, Wherever You Are the artists call on the world to welcome these species out from hiding, into a place of safety and love. THE CRAB GENERAL HOLMES DRIVE KYEEMAGH C-Side Restaurant COME OUT HIPPO How can you play your part this summer? Summer will be safe, clean and fun for everyone if we all play our part. Here's how you can play your part this summer. Use the Bins Dumped rubbish on our beaches, parks and streets can end up in our bay and endanger marine life. It also impacts on how we enjoy our beautiful public spaces. Please leave no litter behind! Butt Out We encourage all smokers, whether they are at the beach or elsewhere, to dispose of cigarette butts properly to ensure our beaches remain litter free. Responsible Dog Ownership We know dogs love our beaches and parks too, so we have an off-leash area at Kyeemagh Beach, between Gate 60 and Gate 61 from 4pm and 10am only. Please keep your dogs on a leash in all public places, including streets and footpaths. Pet owners must carry appropriate waste bags and clean up after their dogs.
