Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flames. 1 • Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility. • Because masks can limit or block eyesight, consider nontoxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives. Hats should fit properly to prevent them from sliding over eyes. Makeup should be tested ahead of time on a small patch of skin to ensure that there are no unpleasant surprises on the big day. • When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories, look for and purchase those with a label clearly indicating that they are flame resistant. • If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of your child's costume, make sure it is not sharp or long. A child may be easily hurt by these accessories if they stumbles or trips. • Do not use decorative contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from an eye care professional. While the packaging on decorative lenses will often make claims such as “one size fits all” or “no need to see an eye specialist,” obtaining decorative contact lenses THANKSGIVING SAFETY TIPS • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food. 2 • Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently. • Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay 3 feet away. • Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns. • Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags. • Keep out of the reach of children. • Be sure electric cords from an electric , coffee maker, plate warmer or are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child. 1 2 ISSUE 3 | PAGE • Keep matches and utility out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet. 3 • Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle. • Make sure your smoke alarms are working.
