Where we are in place and time – 1st Oct 2019

The learners of PYP 1, 2 and 3 started with their 2nd unit "Where we are in place and time.” Each grade has started exploring this as per their understanding. PYP 1 explored the concept of rotation and revolution, the different seasons, and the changes that occur with the seasons. The students of PYP 2 conducted a talk show on the different weather conditions in the local as well as the global environment. They exhibited and expressed their communication skills further by connecting the them to their personal experiences on how they felt during different weather conditions and the similarities and differences in weather patterns. They undertook a hands-on activity to understand how animals and plants respond to changing seasons. The students of PYP 3 were introduced to Forces – Push & Pull. During reflection, on different types of forces, they were able to correctly identify the examples given and explain the Gravitational force, Magnetic force, Friction & Acceleration.

Save Nature – 3rd Oct 2019

MYP 3 students made a chart on 'Save Nature' during I&S class. The aim of this activity is to give awareness to the other students to save our nature and plant a tree and save the environment. The endless greed to live luxuriously, we human beings have given rise to environmental pollution and deforestation. Humans have harmed the environment in many ways.

Magazine by Ajooni Kaur – 3rd Oct 2019

Ajooni Kaur from MYP 2 had created a magazine on Biome. She has chosen the Polar desert of Antartica and made an excellent Magazine. She presented in the class as a part of class activity.

Learn & Play – Kindergarten 4th October 4, 2019

Learning through play is the key term for Kindergarten learning.Kindergartens were taken to Moosa Land for the field trip to have some hands on experience to play and learn. K1 and K2 children were excited to the different sets placed to identify their more interesting area. They found their interest and they demonstrated the Caring Learner profile through sharing the toys and takingturns to enjoy their time.

K3 Children became the guide for the younger group of K1 andK2 children. They established the Caring Learner profile and Social skills in guiding the children, understanding the space provided for them and playing with care.They took responsibility for the toys and they managed to play as a teamwith the time provided to them. They made the day the most memorable moment with loads of fun.

A Step Towards Global Warming – Myp 2 & 3

MYP 2 & 3 students had Service Action Activity linked with Individual and societies. During Club period students have done plantation on our school campus. The endless greed to live luxuriously, we human beings have given rise to environmental pollution and deforestation. Humans have harmed the environment in many ways. The children brought varieties of plants and their efforts should be to slow down global warming as the increase in Earth's temperature poses a grave environmental crisis. Plantation drives as much as possible as trees and plants to help to absorb the carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere.

Differences in Kinetic and Potential Energy – PYP 1 & 3 – 9th Oct 2019

The Learners of PYP 3 explored the differences between kinetic and potential energy forms. They were able to gain a better understanding of the concept while creating simple machine models and comprehending the workings of the same during their robotic sessions.

The students of PYP 1 had fun giving directions to their blindfolded peers for reaching the given destination. They also analyzed the directions using the position of the sun in the sky.

ART FORMS-Song composition by students – 10th Oct 2019

IB aims at fostering creativity in students. The children of PYP 5 composed their own song on child labor. This song composition activity was a great way for students to express themselves and work more deeply with the content in their curriculum. Students framed the lyrics and tunes for their own song for creating awareness about child labour. They used various resources to gather information related to the topic and initiated the process of composing a song. They collaboratively discussed on the tunes and lyrics. This activity exhibited the choice of the students to express their feeling on child labour through song. Students thoroughly enjoyed this activity.

Learning is Fun – PYP 4 – 10th Oct 2019

Learning through games is always fun. The children of PYP 4 learned active and passive voice through an interactive board game. A board game was conducted where they had to convert the voice as per the box in which they land on. This game helped them learn active and passive voice effortlessly, enhancing their social skills.

MUN training Session – 10th Oct 2019

"Great Opportunity seldom comes without us seeking them but such a rarity becomes a reality".

The concept of a MUN is important as it helps the participants to become fully aware of the way of the UN functions. MUN training session has been conducted on the GIS campus on 10th October 2019. It was a full day session with Mr. Akaksh, The entire session was informative. It was an incredible learning experience for students. The trainer made sure that Model UN students learned how to participate can compete at conferences and hone their knowledge of the world to improve student's ideas in a debate.

Sorting the basket: Kindergarten Activity – 14th Oct 2019

Practical understanding works well with kindergarten children. K3 kids of Gateway IB were involved in an activity to sort the materials representing different seasons to the space named with the different seasons. This made them involve with curiosity to identify the seasons and the materials found in real life during different seasons.

Travel and Origin – PYP 3 – 15th Oct 2019

PYP 3 students with the help of a song were introduced to the concept of "Spices" travel and its origin. The students were instructed to imagine tasting different spices and experiencing their flavors. Using play way method - Each student chose a spice name that they enacted the taste of for their peers.

An activity was conducted with the PYP 2 learners to enhance their research skills, this hands-on activity was conducted to help them search words and finding its meaning using a dictionary. Students had fun searching for words in the dictionary and writing their meanings.

Landforms – PYP 1 – 15th Oct 2019

The PYP 1 graders were exposed to the model of different landforms; they not only recognized the different types of landforms present but were also able to explain the differences between each of them. They exhibited their knowledge by giving a presentation on to same to the higher grades.

Egmore Museum Field Trip (MYP1 to DP1) – 16th Oct 2019

MYP 1 to DP1 students had visited the Egmore Government museum on 16th October 2019(Wednesday) as a part of their educational field trip. The museum is the heart of the city of Chennai, spreading in acres of land and six independent buildings in this museum have 46 galleries. The five-building has a different history to tell us about ancient history. The archaeological section of the museum is primarily concerned with the acquisition, preservation, and display of antiquities of the historic period of South India.

MYP 1 to 3 were more curious about to know the information about sculptures and the period belongs to that century. There are over 700 specimens of stone sculptures belonging to the period from about 600 AD to recent times in the section. Models of various dinosaurs and other extinct Reptiles such as Stegosaurus, Brontosaurus, Triceratops. The egg model natural size- 14" height exhibited here was of a large extinct bird Aepyornis. It was about 16 feet in height and considered to be the largest bird ever lived on earth. A miniature model of this bird is exhibited here.It was an informative educational trip for our students.

Save Nature - An Awareness Program – 16th Oct 2019

MYP 3 students have conducted an awareness program during the assembly on 16th October 2019, regarding the subject related Service Action. From individuals & societies they have chosen the topic of Save Nature and gave an awareness program to their juniors and seniors. They prepared two charts and conveyed the message of the benefits of the plantation. The responsibilities and initiatives of MYP 3 students are really appreciative.

Element Card Games – 16th Oct 2019

The interactive game played with cards on elements facilitated the understanding of the position and the properties of the elements in the periodic table.

CLASS DEBATE-”PERFORMANCE ART VS VISUAL ART”—PYP 5 – 17th Oct 2019

In this competitive world where excellence is a cliché, we want our students to have the upper hand at being world-ready. Debates can be a one-stop formula to succeed at almost everything! Debating, especially moulds children’s overall personality apart from providing an avenue for them to voice their views. A power packed debate was conducted in the classroom which enlightened the students. They were able to defend their points on the topic strongly and confidently without any conflicts. This enhanced their social skill.

ART FORM-WALL MURAL – 17th Oct 2019 Murals are important as they bring art into the public sphere. Our students of pyp5 took an action of creating awareness about saving nature in the school community through wall murals as a part of the unit. Murals can have a dramatic impact whether consciously or subconsciously on the attitudes of passers-by, when they are added to areas where people live and work. This allowed us to do a wall mural so that the future generations would love and safe nature.

Seminar on Population – 18th Oct 2019

MYP 4 & 5 had conducted a seminar on Population on 14/10/19. The main objective of the seminar is on Population and their effects. At the opening, MYP 5 students presented their topic and interacted with the participants. MYP 4 has conducted a group seminar on the Rapid growth of Population & Decline of Population. The seminar was informative and interactive.

Cookery Club – 18th Oct 2019

The students of MYP tried their hand at cooking this week as part of their Life Skill Club Activity. It was Bhelpuri that got a western twist at the hands of our young budding chefs. This dish was chosen as a fun and learning experience for Fireless Cooking.

Skype Meeting – 18th Oct 2019

“A Skype meeting was conducted on 18-10-2019 at 1100 A.M for the DP Teachers to collaborate and learn the intricacies of conducting the External and Internal assessment. MS. Kinnari Shah, the Principal of D.J. Patil School, Worli, Mumbai, well-experienced in DP, collaborated, guided and clarified all the queries, related to each subject."

The workshop was conducted by Ms. Hermia sharly, faculty of Waldorf School Chennai on October 19th between 10:20-11:30am .All the teachers of PYP together with the specialist teachers were very curious to get information about various teaching strategies that were practiced in Waldrof curriculum. Waldrof curriculum practices traditional teaching methodology. She explained how music, story-telling, games, character building is important in education and ways of making the class cheerful. We understood how music and rhythm plays an important role to procure the attention of children. The session was extremely useful and engaging.

Kindergarten Activities – 21st Oct 2019

K3 children learned about sequencing the numbers, not in a traditional method of reciting and writing the numbers. They learned the numbers through an exercise integrating Physical education and they sequenced the numbers through the 'number puzzles’. Reading turned out to be loads of fun when the kids were shown sight words through "snow ball game". They were more curious to play the game and complete the game by reading the sight words in the paper given to them. The students of K2 were excited to integrate Mathematical strands on Numbers, they enjoyed the activity on the spinning wheel when the pointer stood at a number, they were able to identify and read the number. They took turns at spinning the wheel. The kids were overjoyed at this activity and were eager to read the number in which pointer lands.

Grammar and Vocabulary – 22nd Oct 2019

The bright minds of PYP 1 were excited to explore the concept of articles to have a better understanding of grammar. The articles were written and placed on a desk, the task was for the students to run until the music stopped and then receive a random word; accordingly they had to decide on the correct article to be used with the word and to stand next to the corresponding article. Students had fun placing the appropriate words alongside their relevant articles. The PYP 2 learners were provoked with vocabulary on animals to get the meanings. Furthermore, using the given vocabulary they researched the habitats of animals by using the library resources. Students read the book and collected information about different habitats and documented the same.

Effervescence – Kindergarten – 22nd Oct 2019

The K1&K2 students did an incredible job by demonstrating their understanding of the learning on the big idea, of how they express their feelings through play, to the parents, relatives, and friends who were invited for the event.Memories of words; nature, courtesy, and rhyming words get imprinted on their minds and come rushing back when our children recited rhymes like 'The bear went over the mountain,' Where are the Duckies,' and, ‘Beach song. ‘The students enjoyed the pinata and seasons game, which enabled them to develop problem-solving skills and social- emotional skills. “Finally, they expressed different emotions while enacting a role play on the story 'The Three Little pigs.' The K3 students demonstrated their learning on 'Health and Personal Hygiene.' They were delighted to express their thoughts on the concept of identifying phonics through the beach ball and snow ball game and confidently did the puzzle on number sequencing. The students were further motivated when they interacted and involved an activity with the parents using manipulators to measure their palms and collect data which gave them the practical implementation of measurement in their day-to-day life. Finally, the event ended when all the students happily sang the song with action. ‘If you're happy and you know it Clap your hands.'

Types of Soil – PYP 4 – 24th Oct 2019

As the students of PYP 4 are learning about different types of soil around the world, they went on a short expedition around the school to collect soil samples. They found the properties and texture of them by analyzing each soil sample under a magnifying glass. They also created a soil palette with the three types of soil they collected within the school campus. This activity helped them explore and hence strengthening their research skills.

TOK – 24th Oct 2019

Students from DP year 1, made a presentation on the real-life situations during the TOK class. They had chosen the real-life situation on, "Ban burkha, and niqab in France. The presentation was an eye-opening session. It had a lot of claims and counterclaims by students and they got connected with different areas of Knowledge and Ways of Knowing. Through this presentation as a Facilitator, I realized how their thoughts and levels were improved according to the situation.

Presentation On Extended Essay – Oct 24th

DP 1 students had attended the presentation on Extended Essay on Thursday 25th October 2019; presentation was conducted by Ms.Vidya Sagari. The aim, nature, assessment criteria and marking of extended essay was discussed during the meeting. DP students were informed the essential knowledge and skills required to carry out extended essay. Guidance for choosing the subject and topic for extended essay was explained and specific brainstorming questions were given to the students as pointer to consider before selecting the subject and topic.

A live demonstration by fire fighters – Oct 25th

Safety and safeguarding others are the most important measures everyone should follow. Keeping in view of Diwali celebrations and general safety during fire, our school arranged a clear lecture and demonstration on the ways of extinguishing fire and to safeguard the victim. This was done in our premises by the fire service department. The fire fighters educated our children on the same by demonstrating the prevention and safety methods during the time of fire. They also shared the emergency numbers to be contacted for the ambulance and fire service along with the ways of first aiding. The session was very much informative and created awareness amongst the students.

Exploration and Observation by PYP – 29th Oct 2019

The students of PYP 1 explored the major rivers of India. They displayed their understanding of the terms; Source and Mouth of the river by conducting an activity using sand and water to demonstrate the joining of 2 rivers. The students then listed the river names and located the rivers from the river route display (PowerPoint) and stuck the river name chits in the respective place in the Indian outline map. Then they identified the state in which these rivers flow using the Indian puzzle board and reflected on the same. PYP 2 students had an interactive session to understand the concept of interdependence. The students prior brainstormed by observing the picture of a bird and giraffe on the screen and used their thinking skills to say the relationship between these pictures. They were provoked to think , how the bird helps the giraffe and were able to share their knowledge about the parasites; 'Ticks and flies stick to giraffe body and cause them itching, and the bird thus helps the giraffe by eating the flies to clean up its body.' They illustrated and explained interdependent animals using a simple food chain; eagle rely on snakes, snakes rely on rat and finally a rat relies on grains. The PYP 3 learners understood the concepts of Forms of energy and simple machines with the help of songs. They also made charts and models of some simple machines (used/ seen in daily life) using recyclable materials, such as well, see-saw, crane, weighing scale, robot and cars.

Awareness campaign on 'Dengue Fever' – Oct 30th

Taking Action is an integral part of IB and our students go through lengths to take appropriate actions. Focusing on the local issue, students of PYP 5 decided to create an awareness campaign on 'Dengue Fever’. They researched and collected pictures related to dengue fever in the ICT lab to design their own posters. Their aim is to create awareness in the school and the local community. These posters were graded by the MYP students on a scale of 1 to 5. On the basis of the ratings received, the best poster was chosen to be printed into multiple copies to be put up on the school premises as well as their apartment complexes for the dengue awareness. This activity helped the students to improve their involvement and confidence by creating healthy competition among their peers.

Assessment - made fun! – Oct 31st

Who would enjoy exams and assessments? Our students would. At Gateway, we give exciting and interesting tasks to assess the children that make learning completely enjoyable. For the PYP 4 students, the summative assessment for unit 2 is to create their own island with different landforms and places using play dough. The children made their own play dough using all- purpose flour and salt. Then the students placed the island on the map wherever they desired and wrote about the absolute location, time zone, and distance from the equator, and occupation of the people there, climatic conditions etc. on a fun interactive worksheet provided. They were full of energy to work on this assessment and gave their fullest.

EYP-K3 – Chrisa - September 2019

Chrisa is awarded the student of the month for September. She has attributed the IB Learner profile as being principled which is shown through her regular attendance to school and 'caring' towards helping her peers in developing their gross motor skills. She is showing continuous progress in developing her self-management skills, which is required at this stage.

EYP-K1- Aaditya – October 2019

Aaditya is an enthusiastic student of the class; he actively participates in all the learning engagements. He is appreciated for developing his communication skills and exhibits knowledgeable and principled IB learner profile, he is very punctual and helpful in the classroom.

PYP 3 - Manasi Sabarinath - September 2019

Manasi Sabarinath attributes as being a balanced child to understand the importance of intellectual, physical, and emotional balance, to achieve personal well-being for herself and her peers. She is a 'Reflective learner' and gives thoughtful consideration to her own learning and experience.

PYP-1 –Aravindan – October 2019 Aravindan is chosen as the best student of this month as he demonstrates the IB learner profile as being "Principled. He ensures that he finishes his task and submits his work. He is a good listener and has improved tremendously in communicating his ideas to his peer group.

MYP – 4 – Jayden – September 2019

Jayden exhibits a positive outlook and attitude in the classroom. He cooperates consistently with the teacher and other students. He has a very inquisitive mind and spends time thinking deeply about the topics we are exploring. He inquired a lot and gives answers during the class discussion which adds to the whole classes learning the process.

MYP – 5- Siddharth Mani – October 2019

Siddharth Mani is identified as a knowledgeable student; he demonstrates good level of understanding in the concepts in the all subject discipline. He is very energetic and spreads positive aura in the classroom.

DP 1 –Adwait Ramakrishnan – September 2019 The student of the month of September 2019 is awarded to Adwait Ramakrishanan of DP 1. He is known for his positivity and enthusiasm. Adwait is principled in all his works. He strictly adheres to the deadlines and the works assigned to him with sincerity.

DP – 1 – Shatriya – October 2019

Shathriya is awarded the student of the month (October)..Shathriya remains neutral in all the situations. He is a good listener and values others' comments positively. He adheres to the learner profile of being OPEN-MINDED.

Uniforms

Wearing the school helps to build pride and school spirit but when the correct uniform is not worn, and orbit is dirty or sloppy it does not build a culture of pride or care for one’s school, hence we are asking parents to assist us by requiring their children to in appropriate uniform before leaving to school.

Boys: (K1 – K3 & PYP) - dark grey , half sleeve white , grey , tie, and black sports ; (MYP) - dark grey long pants, white half sleeve shirt, grey socks, tie, belt and black sports shoes. P.E. – House T-shirt, black track pants, grey socks and black sports shoes.

Girls: (K1 – K3 & PYP) dark grey pinafore, half sleeve white shirt, grey socks, tie, belt and black sports shoes; (MYP) - dark grey long pants, white half sleeve shirt, grey socks, tie, belt and black sports shoes. P.E. – House T-shirt, black track pants, grey socks and black sports shoes. Formal & sports uniform must be purchased from the school.

Kindly see that the children come in proper uniform daily to school.
