Public Disclosure Authorized Rehabilitation of the Historical Museum of Khoni Public Disclosure Authorized Environmental and Social Screening Report Public Disclosure Authorized Public Disclosure Authorized March 2018 Sub-Project Description The Sub-Project (SP) will be implemented in the city of Khoni. Historical Museum is located in the center of the city, on the way to Okatse Canyon, making museum attractive to foreign, as well as to domestic tourists. According to the data of the National Tourism Agency of Georgia, an average of 700,000 tourists visit Imereti annually. The foreigners comprise approximately 25% of visitors, out of which at least 70% visit the city of Khoni, Okatse Canyon and Khoni Museum, which are included in tourist route of Khoni. In order to ensure the tourist flow in the city of Khoni increases further, it is necessary to further develop tourist infrastructure, protect the museum building and provide a secure environment. The Historical Museum of Khoni is located in the touristic zone. The museum was founded in 1981 and building is renowned for its architecture and location. The museum houses a rich collection of archaeological material of excavations in Khoni municipality, from the Paleolithic age to late Feudal age, including ceramics, copper, metal exhibits of bronze age, numismatic collections (one of the largest collections of Colchic Tetri in the VI century BC (990 units in total)), ethnographic material and other artifacts. The museum has an open-air exhibition space as well. Even though the renovation of the building has been carried out, the museum is not equipped with exposition equipment, cabinets, nightstands, exhibition platforms and lighting system. -

Public Disclosure Authorized Improvement of tourist infrastructure in Chiatura public park Environmental and Social Screening Report Public Disclosure Authorized Public Disclosure Authorized March 2018 Public Disclosure Authorized Sub-Project Description The Sub-Project (SP) for the improvement of tourist infrastructure in Chiatura public park will be implemented in center of Chiatura town, which is famous for its rich deposit of manganese. Historical and architectural monuments confirm that Chiatura area has been inhabited since ancient times. There are several unique monuments, including Katskhi column – a 40-meter rock. Two small churches (V-VI) are found on top of the column. There are other important cultural and religious sites in the municipality, including monastery of Katskhi (X-XI), St. George's Church of Darkveti (XI), St. George's Church of Rgani (XI-XII) century, Perevisi Church, Mghvime monastery of Mothers (all of XIII century). Various archaeological materials of Bronze Age, discovered on the territory of the municipality, are represented in the Chiatura History Museum. According to the data of Chiatura municipality and Georgian Tourism Administration, more than 1,800 tourists, including more than 500 foreigners, visit Chiatura annually. The number of tourists in the region has increased by 7% in 2016, after the rehabilitation of Katskhi monastery and column. The SP envisages improvement of the Chiatura central park with the active collaboration of local self-government and make park more visitor-friendly for the local population and tourists. Currently the park infrastructure is in poor conditions, with the pavement damaged, vast majority of lighting poles out of order, fountain walls damaged and only a few garbage receptacles available on the park territory. -

“Borderization” Continues in Georgia
EURASIA “Borderization” Continues in Georgia OE Watch Commentary: In August 2019, the Georgian government established a police checkpoint near the village of Chorchana as part of an effort to counter what it has called the “borderization” of its territory by forces from the occupied region of South Ossetia (see: “A Change in the ‘Borderization’ Process for Georgia?” OE Watch, October 2019). The checkpoint initially appeared to have some effect and helped the Georgian government with public relations at a time when many in the country did not believe enough was being done to counter “borderization.” As the accompanying excerpted articles report, Georgia’s border with the occupied South Ossetia region continues to shift and the reported incidents provide an update on how this is taking place. The villages of Chorchana and Gugutiantkari are in two different districts that do not border each other, but are notable since both made headlines in August 2019 – Chorchana because of the police checkpoint and Gugutiantkari since part of it became divided after occupation forces installed fencing. -

One patient from Abkhazia is hospitalized in Georgia State Representative of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region Alexandre Motserelia told the Georgian Public Broadcaster that one of the three patients arrived from Moscow to Adler (Sochi) by plane, traveled to occupied Abkhazia’s capital town of Sokhumi, went to Saberio village of Abkhaz-controlled Gali district, and entered Georgia proper through Tbilisi-controlled Pakhulani village, before she was delivered to Zugdidi hospital (Civil.ge, March 30, 2020). 2. Sokhumi Restricts Movement Between Gali, Ochamchire Districts Acting Abkhaz leader Valery Bganba has instructed the “interior ministry” to set up a police cordon at a permanent checkpoint “Kanal” in order to restrict movement between Gali and Ochamchire districts starting from 21:00 [22:00 GMT+4, Tbilisi time – Civil.ge’s note]. The move comes as a patient – having previously traveled to Moscow – has arrived in Zugdidi via Abkhaz-controlled Gali district and tested positive for COVID-19 today. The infected woman has reportedly travelled to Adler (Sochi) and Sokhumi on her way to Zugdidi (Civil.ge, March 30, 2020). 3.
