Agua e Infraestructura Hídrica 2 de octubre 2015 Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica Nicoya La Mesa de Agua e Infraestructura Hidríca para Guanacaste, se conformó el pasado 2 de octubre con la participación de instituciones públicas como el MINAE- AyA, MAG, INDER, SENARA, SINAC, DINA, UNA, CNE, además de la presencia de tres diputados de la provincia, Surray Carrillo por el FA, Marta Arauz y Juan Marín de PLN, también se tuvo presencia de la Sociedad Civil como ASADAS, CATURGA, FEMUGA, Cámara de Ganaderos de Guanacaste, COMUN, Municipalidades como Bagaces. Una de las sugerencias importantes es la participación de otros actores de la región chorotega que han estado pendientes del proceso, también sería importante una nueva reunión para ver el proceso de seguimiento de acuerdo a los compromisos adquiridos. Se definen las prioridades de la mesa, las colaboraciones y responsables, también se hace un listado de obstáculos con la intención de acelerar los procesos para atender el decreto y la emergencia de sequía. Se estableció la priorización de las Comunidades con problemas de agua de forma crítica en categoría roja, para ello se identifican según la CNE 125 comunidades con problemas de abastecimiento de agua potable. Se ha tomado acciones como la colocación de tanques de almacenamiento en centros escolares y comunidades con agua escasa, colocado tanques de almacenamiento, agua en camiones cisternas, sin embargo cada semana aparecen nuevas comunidades con problemas de agua a medida que aumenta la sequía se perfila mayores problemas de faltante de agua.

Baumgartner, Jean Tournon, Alain Desmet, and Jean Aubouin2 ABSTRACT Pre-upper Senonian basement of Costa Rica crops out in the Santa Elena and Nicoya peninsulas. From south to north and from base to top the basement includes the Esperanza, Matapalo, and Santa Elena units. The Esperanza unit is Albian-Santonian in age and consists mainly of pillow basalt and massive basalt flows. The Matapalo unit includes Callovian-Cenomanian radiolarite and exhibits a massive basalt flow, pillow basalt, and dolerite basement. The Santa Elena unit contains ultramafic and mafic rocks in which harzburgite is the major component. The most important tec- tonic features of the Nicoya Complex are the large Santa Elena and Matapalo nappes. Nappe emplacement was from north to south during late Santonian time. The sedimentary cover of the Nicoya Complex comprises (1) the Campanian El Viejo Formation, which consists of shallow-water sediments to the north on Santa Elena Peninsula and the Campa- nian-Maestrichtian Sabana Grande Formation of deep-water origin to the south on Nicoya Peninsula; (2) Paleocene sediments, which indicate deposition in a deep-water environment and which comprise the Rivas, Las Palmas, and Samara formations; and (3) post-upper Eocene(?) sediments, which consist of the shallow-water Barra Honda and Montezuma formations. Two unconformities are the major geologic features of the upper Senonian-Tertiary sequence of Costa Rica. The lower one is at the base of the Sabana Grande Formation and marks a major change in the geologic conditions (basalt is scarce in the Campanian-Tertiary series); the upper unconformity at the base of the Barra Honda and Montezuma formations is not as pronounced as the lower one.

Durham Center for Responsible Travel A Nonprofit Research Organization Stanford University and Washington, DC www.responsibletravel.org April 2010 1 Foreword The following Summary Report, based on two years of research and some two dozen individual studies by a team of Costa Rican and U.S. experts, offers the first multidimensional analysis of the phenomena that Costa Ricans have dubbed “residential tourism.” While this term has become popular, most Costa Ricans have had little understanding of its dimensions and implications for the country, the country’s Pacific coast, or Costa Rica’s tourism industry. The study traces the origins of this coastal transformation from the 1970s to the present, with particular focus on the real estate and construction boom and bust (caused by the global economic crisis) from 2002 through 2009. As members of the Advisory Committee that has assisted the research team, we believe that the study’s findings and recommendations can play a constructive role in helping to foment public discussion, civic engagement, and policy reforms to ensure a sustainable economy in coastal and marine tourism. Over the last decade, Costa Rica’s Pacific coast has become one of the epicenters in the Americas for rapid beach resort and vacation home development closely tied to the U.S. market. On its large coast line you can find beaches of fine and gray sands, cliffs, deserted bays, estuaries and many more. Dense tropical vegetation alternates with cattle grazing on hilly farmland. It has some of the most isolated and beautiful beaches, several national parks and a longer summer season, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations. The Peninsula is still kind of a remote paradise in many parts, although there are some well-known and busier spots like Tamarindo or Samara. But most areas – especially in the south -are still dominated by rural mountain hamlets or sleepy villages dispersed on the natural and unspoilt coast. “Body Art and Greater Nicoyan Identity Through Time” Laura M. Wingfield, PhD Emory University [email protected] NOTE: This paper was written for the electronic symposium on Nicaraguan Archaeology, led by Geoffrey McCafferty and Alex Geurds, at the 2011 Society for American Archaeology conference in Sacramento, California. The images included here are for instructional purposes only and not to be reused. If/when this paper is published, most images will be drawn by the author (except those from the Carlos Museum of Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia). 0 Determining cultural identity for ancient peoples who left no formal system of writing behind can be difficult if not impossible. Body art designs can be a system of codes akin to writing and perhaps one of our best avenues for identifying distinct cultural patterns through time. The original inhabitants of southwestern Nicaragua and northwestern Costa Rica, an area called Greater Nicoya by archaeologists, left behind thousands of ceramic effigies of humans often covered with body art designs. When the Spanish arrived in the sixteenth century, they recorded seeing tattooed bodies among the Nicarao in Nicaragua and body painting on the men among the Chibchan-speaking Huetar of Costa Rica (Oviedo as cited in Lothrop 1926: 38). Today in the remaining indigenous areas of Costa Rica and neighboring Panamá, Chibchan women particularly don body paint for special occasions (Salazar S. 2002: 16, 136- 139). Can we determine from the ancient Nicoyan ceramic effigies if the body art designs were tattoos or body painting and/or if they are designs that signal Nicarao identity or Chibchan or that of other groups? Who were the peoples who inhabited Greater Nicoya through time? When the Spanish arrived they recorded that the Nicarao, a Nahuatl-speaking group, lived along the southwestern shore of Lake Nicaragua (also called Lake Cocibolca) (see Fig.
