Conservation Advice Grevillea Althoferorum Split-Leaved Grevillea
THREATENED SPECIES SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 The Minister’s delegate approved this Conservation Advice on 01/04/2016. Conservation Advice Grevillea althoferorum split-leaved grevillea Conservation Status Grevillea althoferorum (split-leaved grevillea) is listed as Endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) (EPBC Act). The species is eligible for listing as prior to the commencement of the EPBC Act, it was listed as Endangered under Schedule 1 of the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992 (Cwlth). The main factors that are the cause of the species being eligible for listing in the Endangered category are its geographic distribution is precarious for its survival due to its restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, severe fragmentation of populations and extreme fluctuations in number of mature individuals, and low number of mature individuals. Grevillea althoferorum is listed as Declared Rare Flora and as Critically Endangered under the Western Australian Wildlife Conservation Act 1950. Description The split-leaved grevillea is a compact rounded shrub with trailing stems up to 3 m long, and angular branchlets covered with very fine, long, soft hairs. Its leaves are 3–7.5 cm long and 1–5 cm wide. They have twice-divided lobes, and are broadly triangular with recurved sharp points. The terminal inflorescence is 2 to 5 cm long and erect. The cream flowers (floral whorl and style), which appear from August to October, are regular (not one-sided), and the buds are covered in pinkish-brown hairs. The grooved, oblong fruit is 12–15 mm long and 3–4 mm wide (Stack & English 2003). -

11 VEGETATION OF BADJALING NATURE RESERVE, SOUTH BADJALING NATURE RESERVE, YOTING TOWN RESERVE AND YOTING WATER RESERVE B.G. MUIR General The Badjaling-Yoting series of reserves falls within the Avon district of the South-Western Botanical Province of Gardner and Bennetts (1956) and the vegetation largely conforms to that generally found throughout this region. No documented plant collections have been made prior to this survey, which was carried out on 5-7 September 1977. Vegetation descriptions for Badjaling Nature Reserve, South Badjaling Nature Reserve, Yoting Town Reserve and Yoting Water Reserve are given in Appendices 1, 3, 5 and 7 respectively; species lists at selected locations are given in Appendices 2, 4, 6 and 8 respectively. Vegetation locations are given on Figs 2, 3, 4 and 5 respectively. Methodology The vegetation of the Badjaling-Yoting Reserves was mapped at Level 1 of the reliability scale set out in Muir (1977). Each vegetation formation discernible on the air photographs was examined on the ground; at least one location was described in detail within each major association using the classification shown in Table 1 and discussed in detail in Muir (1977); and a soil profile was described for each major association. Level 1 locations shown on Fig. 2 represent 'sample areas' where the vege tation was examined in detail. The following prefix numbers of the locations represent basic formation types: 1 Woodland formations 2 Mallee formations 3 Shrubland formations 4 Heath formations 7 Salt complex 8 Other The methods used in classifying formations, coding vegetation, preparing plant lists, classifying litter and describing soils are those of Muir (1977). -

Roger’s sister has a property at Gorge Rock, near Corrigin, about 300km east-south-east of Perth. She asked Roger to ‘mind the farm’ while she took a holiday, and he did. So for part of this trip he had a home base, which he put to good use, driving on every road and track in the area in search of new, unusual and interesting plants. Sheila joined him a little later and they explored the south-west, then up to Uluru and home. Roger feels that the real wildflower country starts at the Cocklebiddy Roadhouse on the Nullabor in Western Australia. However, the first plant he showed us was Eucalyptus youngiana, a tallish plant with, in South Australia, large yellow flowers. As you head further west, the flowers change to red. They are easy to grow in a garden, and the flower buds are large and attractive in their own right. Hakea francissiana. A spectacular grey leafed form of Isopogon divergens grows around Kulin, south of Roger’s home base. It is a plant of about 1 metre with paler mauve flower than the green leafed form. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. A Wildlife Management Program has been published for Eucalyptus rhodantha (Sampson et al. 1990) and much of the information and recovery actions in this Plan are taken from that document. Recovery Plans delineate, justify and schedule management actions necessary to support the recovery of an endangered or vulnerable species or ecological community. The attainment of objectives and the provision of funds is subject to budgetary and other constraints affecting the parties involved, as well as the need to address other priorities. Recovery Plans do not necessarily represent the views nor the official positions of any individuals or agencies represented on the Recovery Team. This Recovery Plan has been approved by the Executive Director, Department of Conservation and Land Management, the National Parks and Nature Conservation Authority and the Minister for the Environment. -

INTERIM RECOVERY PLAN NO. 129 SPLIT-LEAVED GREVILLEA (Grevillea althoferorum) INTERIM RECOVERY PLAN 2003-2008 Gillian Stack & Val English Photograph: Leonie Monks May 2003 Department of Conservation and Land Management Western Australian Threatened Species and Communities Unit (WATSCU) PO Box 51, Wanneroo, WA 6946 Interim Recovery Plan for Grevillea althoferorum FOREWORD Interim Recovery Plans (IRPs) are developed within the framework laid down in Department of Conservation and Land Management (the Department) Policy Statements Nos. 44 and 50. IRPs outline the recovery actions that are required to urgently address those threatening processes most affecting the ongoing survival of threatened taxa or ecological communities, and begin the recovery process. The Department is committed to ensuring that Critically Endangered taxa are conserved through the preparation and implementation of Recovery Plans or Interim Recovery Plans and by ensuring that conservation action commences as soon as possible and always within one year of endorsement of that rank by the Minister. This Interim Recovery Plan results from a review of, and replaces, number 42 Grevillea althoferorum (S. Hamilton-Brown and V. English, 1999). This IRP will operate from May 2003 to April 2008 but will remain in force until withdrawn or replaced. It is intended that, if the taxon is still ranked Critically Endangered, this IRP will be reviewed after five years and the need for a full Recovery Plan will be assessed. This IRP was approved by the Director of Nature Conservation 20 June, 2003. The provision of funds identified in this Interim Recovery Plan is dependent on budgetary and other constraints affecting the Department, as well as the need to address other priorities.
