October War 1973 3 Chadwick Handout ISRAELI UNIT ORGANIZATION Division Artillery Regiment NOTE: The mechanized company organic to the 3 SP 155mm howitzer battalions tank battalions of the armored brigade was 1 SP 120mm mortar battalion almost universally absent. In regular units, the 1 SP 160mm mortar battalion mechanized company was usually a reserve element not present until after mobilization, and in reserve units the mechanized company had a Armored Brigade lower mobilization priority, so often arrived at Recon Company the front well after the rest of the battalion had 3 Tank Battalions been committed to combat. In most cases, the Headquarters [2 tanks] companies were not sent forward to the tank 3 tank companies [11 tanks] battalions but instead formed a small pool of 1 mechanized infantry company mechanized infantry at brigade, which guarded (see note) the brigade HQ and trains and at night formed the forward infantry screen behind which the Mechanized Brigade armor withdrew to rest and re-supply. Because of Recon Company losses and detachments, this brigade force was Mortar Battalion [12 x SP 120mm mortars] usually no more than a single company, and Tank Battalion several accounts refer to an armored brigade Headquarters [2 tanks] using “its own company of mechanized 4 tank companies [11 tanks] infantry.” 2 Mechanized Battalions Headquarters 7th Armored Brigade: The 7th Armored Brigade 4 mechanized infantry companies was the only brigade in the force structure which 1 support company [MG, AT, Mort] still operated on the 1967 TO&E of two tank battalions and a mechanized infantry battalion. Infantry/Parachute Brigade Why this was so is unclear. The tank battalions Recon Company of the 7th Brigade did not have mechanized Engineer Company companies, and so had only the three tank Anti-Tank Company companies each. The 75th Mechanized Infantry Mortar Battalion [12 x towed 120mm mortars] Battalion of the 7th Armored Brigade was the 3 Infantry/Parachute Battalions only Regular Army mechanized infantry Headquarters battalion; all other mechanized battalions were 4 infantry/parachute companies reservists (although a single company of regular 1 support company [MG, AT, Mort] troops stationed in Rafah in peacetime formed part of one of the 141st Battalion of the 204th Divisional Reconnaissance Battalion Mechanized Brigade.)
