EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Tullow Kenya B.V. (TKBV) holds an Exclusive Prospecting Right (EPR) over Block 12A, which covers nine districts (Turkana East, East Pokot, Marakwet West, Baringo Central, Marigat, Keiyo South, Baringo North, Mogotio and part of Samburu Districts) in northwest Kenya. The main objective of the seismic survey is to study in detail the assigned area of 15389.39km2, in accordance with the contractual obligations under the Production Sharing Agreement (PSC) signed with the Kenya Government on 17th September 2008 in order to delineate potential hydrocarbon prospects. This Environmental Impact Assessment Project Report has been prepared for TKBV, in accordance with the objectives established by the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA) of 1999, and subsequent related regulations. Seismic surveys are a primary tool utilized during the exploration of hydrocarbons in both onshore (land) and offshore (marine) areas. -

Indeed, the acacia-dotted savannas of Kenya are inhabited by classic African animals, from towering elephants and prancing gazelles to prides of lions and stalking leopards. The country also plays host to the annual wildebeest migration, the largest single movement of herd animals on the planet. However, what makes Kenya truly stand out as a travel destination is the vast palette of landscapes that comprise this visually stunning country. While the flaunted image of the savannas of Masai Mara is perhaps the single key selling point for Kenya’s tourist industry, intrepid travellers can also explore the barren expanses of the Rift Valley, the glacial ridges of Mt Kenya and the beaches of the Swahili coast. This rich diversity of quintes- sential African environments presents opportunities for hiking, trekking, diving, sailing and so much more. But to simply focus on Kenya’s wildlife and nature is to ignore the people that make this country so dynamic. LOPEZ-BAUTISTA DANIEL GRAF RICHARD MAYDEN A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Biological Sciences in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2012 Copyright Kebede Alemu Beshera 2012 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT The phylogeny, biogeography, population genetics and taxonomy of Labeobarbus (Cyprinidae), a genus of large hexaploid minnows, was estimated by a variety of phylogenetic and population genetics methods. In Chapter 2 relationships among species of large barbine minnows was examined based on analysis of variation in complete mitochondrial (mt) cytochrome b (cyt b) gene sequences. In all analyses hexaploid minnows from Saharan and Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East were recovered as a monophyletic taxon. This clade diverged from European tetraploid and African diploid and tetraploid lineages approximately 13 MYA. The earliest cladogewnetic event within this clade occurred ca 5.0 MYA giving rise to Sub-Saharn African and Saharan African-Levant clades. Subsequent cladodenesis within the clade took place during the Plio-Pleistocene. Chapter 3 investigated the phylogeography of Labeobarbus intermedius across its geographic distribution in Ethiopia based on analysis of complete cyt b gene sequences. Phylogenetic analysis recovered two distinct geographic lineages (northern and southern) within L. intermedius, which diverged from each other ca Late Pleistocene consistent with the timing of Pleistocene volcanic activities in East Africa. Chapter 4 developed microsatellite DNA markers for use in Chapter 5. -

The scheme was established in the year 1989 by Presidential Directive to resettle people displaced from their lands to create space for government projects including Kirandich dam, schools, churches, the airstrip and the Government Training Institute (GTI). However the due process of the degazettement of the forest for the establishment of the settlement was not undertaken at that time. This led to the development of the informal Mochongoi settlement causing encroachment and land ownership problems. Part of the settlement scheme was degazetted and some land owners were issued with land titles while others have allotment letters (Block I). However majority of people in the settlement scheme do not have land ownership documents. On Tuesday 23rd February 2016, the people of Mochongoi Settlement Scheme petition the National Assembly through their MP Hon. Grace Kipchoim for degazettement of Ol Arabel Forest for Mochongoi Settlement Scheme and issuance of titles pursuant to Article 119 (1) of the Constitution of Kenya (2010) and Standing Order 219. -
