E-mail: [email protected] The great majority of Scottish parish churches owe their present appearance to reconstructions carried out from the later eighteenth or nineteenth centuries. It was the view of the authors of this paper, however, that in many cases those reconstructions had been relatively superficial, and that medieval work might have survived under what could, in some cases, be little more than a modern veneer. To test this view, a survey was carried out of all medieval parish sites within the dioceses of Dunblane and Dunkeld. The findings from that survey are summarized in this paper. The loss of medieval parish churches in Scotland has been so great that there is a widely held view that too few survive for a detailed understanding of pre-Reformation parochial architecture to be reached. In a paper published in 1939, for example, it could be

  • Notes on the Early History of the Kidston Family in Scotland
NOTES ON THE EARLY HISTORY OF THE KIDSTON FAMILY IN SCOTLAND By: Robert D. Davic, Ph.D.; [email protected]. Pittsburgh, PA, USA; (March 17, 2015 revision) ===================================================================================== INTRODUCTION This document is a summary of notes my wife and I have gathered about the early history of her Kidston family ancestry from Scotland. My wife, Elizabeth Kidston Davic (b. 1951, m. 1974) was born in the U.S.A. in western Pennsylvania, second child of Richard Kidston and Gladys Thomas. She always knew that both of her father’s grandparents came from Scotland, but had few details. After retirement, and with more time to get involved with her Kidston ancestry, she obtained information about her grandfather’s family and made a visit to his home town of Glasglow. She became aware of a remarkable document written by a distant cousin, John Kidston Tait (b. 1924, d. 2013), that gave a detailed record of her Scottish ancestry back to her 12th great grandfather, John Kydstoun of Logie parish, Sterlingshire (Tait, 1995: The Kidstons’ of Logie; 1995 edition, 20 Chapters, 4 Addendum). Information provided by Mr. Tait revealed that the Kidston family name had a much older presence at the town of Peebles located in the lowland county of Peeblesshire. Seen today on road maps of Peebles are the place locations Upper Kidston, Nether Kidston, Kidston Mill, Kidston Burn (a stream), and Kidston Bank Woods. Expecting to find some Kidston relatives living at Peebles to contact for information about family history, you can imagine our surprise when we learned that no Kidstons’ have lived at Peebles for more than 700 years.

Coalfields Community Futures The Coalfields Community Futures Programme is an approach to local community planning and sustainable community development that aims to encourage active citizenship and build local democracy. It enables communities to devise a community action plan which makes a case for the things that the community thinks are important and wishes to make happen. The process builds on existing processes of community action research to identify local needs and priorities, using residents as co-researchers. We work with local residents and groups to develop a common sense of purpose and assist them to produce a deliverable community action plan. To support the action planning process the community receive a Participatory Budget which is available to local constituted community or voluntary groups. This budget enables the community to fund small projects that are identified by the community through the results of the household surveys, stakeholder interviews and the Community Open Event. Act as If You Own the Place As a way to further develop our Coalfields Community Futures process we worked in partnership with the Electoral Reform Society.
