CLAIR MMMAAARRRCCCHHH 222000111111 Introduction The Lake Erie Committee Forage Task Group report addresses progress made in 2010 on four charges: 1. Continue to describe the status and trends of forage fish and invertebrates in each basin of Lake Erie. 2. Continue the development of an experimental design to facilitate forage fish assessment and standardized interagency reporting. 3. Continue hydroacoustic assessment of the pelagic forage fish community in Lake Erie, incorporating new methods in survey design and analysis while following the GLFC’s Great Lakes Hydroacoustic Standard Operating Procedures where possible/feasible. 4. Continue the interagency lower-trophic food web monitoring program to produce annual indices of trophic conditions which will be included with the annual description of forage status. Round gobies continue to be important Low (Ontario) to moderate (New York) diet items to white bass and yellow perch in June and abundance of eastern basin forage fish species during August, and are a primary component of smallmouth 2010 was largely attributable to rainbow smelt. Age-0 bass diets sampled in the fall. Mean size of walleye and rainbow smelt abundance increased in 2010, were white bass collected in 2010 was above average for fish captured in greater numbers than yearling-and-older up to age-3. -

In these series are published original articles and monographs dealing with the collections and work of the Museum and setting forth newly acquired facts in the fields of anthropology, biology, geology, history, and technology. Copies of each publication are distributed to libraries and scientific organizations and to specialists and others interested in the various subjects. The Proceedings, begun in 1878, are intended for the publication, in separate form, of shorter papers. These are gathered in volumes, octavo in size, with the publication date of each paper recorded in the table of contents of the volume. In the Bulletin series, the first of which was issued in 1875, appear longer, separate publications consisting of monographs (occasionally in several parts) and volumes in which are collected works on related subjects. Bulletins are either octavo or quarto in size, depending on the needs of the presentation. Since 1902, papers relating to the botanical collections of the Museum have been published in the Bulletin series under the heading Contributions from the United States National Herbarium. -

SPORT FISH OF OHIO identification DIVISION OF WILDLIFE 1 With more than 40,000 miles of streams, 2.4 million acres of Lake Erie and inland water, and 450 miles of the Ohio River, Ohio supports a diverse and abundant fish fauna represented by more than 160 species. Ohio’s fishes come in a wide range of sizes, shapes and colors...and live in a variety of aquatic habitats from our largest lakes and rivers to the smallest ponds and creeks. Approximately one-third of these species can be found in this guide. This fish identification guide provides color illustrations to help anglers identify their catch, and useful tips to help catch more fish. We hope it will also increase your awareness of the diversity of fishes in Ohio. This book also gives information about the life history of 27 of Ohio’s commonly caught species, as well as information on selected threatened and endangered species. Color illustrations and names are also offered for 20 additional species, many of which are rarely caught by anglers, but are quite common throughout Ohio. Fishing is a favorite pastime of many Ohioans and one of the most enduring family traditions. A first fish or day shared on the water are memories that last a lifetime. It is our sincere hope that the information in this guide will contribute significantly to your fishing experiences and understanding of Ohio’s fishes. Good Fishing! Morrisburg, Ontario — As part of a phased reopening, St. Lawrence Parks Commission (SLPC) has opened more of its sites. Towards harmonization in naming along Canada’s southern border Helen KERFOOT* In the 1950s, a major power project was constructed on the St. Lawrence River between Canada and the USA, and in 1959 the St. Lawrence Seaway was created. In order to undertake these large engineering projects that would benefit both countries, the water levels would be raised by over 73 metres. This would involve flooding of farmland, creating a new landscape, particularly on the Canadian side where it necessitated moving families from six communities and three smaller hamlets into two newly created communities above flood level. Naming the new features appeared straight forward, but turned out to be problematic, showing that a names board needs good supporting material with local input before making decisions and that Government ministers can influence decision-making; it also provides an example of preservation of cultural heritage through geographical naming. A lake was formed and required a name that could be used on both sides of the Canada/US border; agreement was reached, although not without questions. Some 25 years later, representatives of the names boards of Canada and the USA met to develop an agreement on the naming of transboundary features. This was signed in 1989 and has been in effect since. Following this agreement, an inventory was created of named features that crossed the Canada/US boundary. For various reasons there were differences in the names of a number of shared features in the inventory; few attempts have been made to change these names for consistency, and local usage and language may justify their retention as reflections of differing cultural heritages. -

2000, No. 1COPEIA February 1 Copeia, 2000(1), pp. 1±10 Phylogenetic Relationships in the North American Cyprinid Genus Cyprinella (Actinopterygii: Cyprinidae) Based on Sequences of the Mitochondrial ND2 and ND4L Genes RICHARD E. BROUGHTON AND JOHN R. GOLD Shiners of the cyprinid genus Cyprinella are abundant and broadly distributed in eastern and central North America. Thirty species are currently placed in the genus: these include six species restricted to Mexico and three barbeled forms formerly placed in different cyprinid genera (primarily Hybopsis). We conducted a molecular phylogenetic analysis of all species of Cyprinella found in the United States, using complete nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial, protein-coding genes ND2 and ND4L. Maximum-parsimony analysis recovered a single most-parsimonious tree for Cyprinella. Among historically recognized, nonbarbeled Cyprinella, the mitochondrial (mt) DNA tree indicated that basal lineages in Cyprinella are comprised largely of species with linear breeding tubercles and that are endemic to Atlantic and/or Gulf slope drainages, whereas derived lineages are comprised of species broadly distrib- uted in the Mississippi basin and the American Southwest. The Alabama Shiner, C. callistia, was basal in the mtDNA tree, although a monophyletic Cyprinella that in- cluded C. callistia was not supported in more than 50% of bootstrap replicates. There was strong bootstrap support (89%) for a clade that included all species of nonbarbeled Cyprinella (except C. callistia) and two barbeled species, C. labrosa and C. zanema. The third barbeled species, C. monacha, fell outside of Cyprinella sister to a species of Hybopsis. Within Cyprinella were a series of well-supported species groups, although in some cases bootstrap support for relationships among groups was below 50%.
