Football – 5-3 (Commonwealth Conference 3-2, MAC 5-3) Last Week – Defeated *Susquehanna, 52-33. *Commonwealth game This Week – Sat., Nov. 4th at #, 1:00 p.m. #MAC game Freshman tailback Tim Barlok (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS) set a Moravian record with a 95- yard touchdown run in the Greyhounds 52-33 victory over in Middle Atlantic Confer- ence Commonwealth action on Saturday. Barlok finished the game with a season best 197 yards, the fifth best day in school history, on 22 carries and four rushing touchdowns. Barlok also caught two passes for six yards and a score.

Moravian, which scored over 50 points for the first time since a 50-17 victory over Muhlenberg College in 1994, improved to 5-3 on the season, clinched its first non-losing season since 1997 and finished second in the MAC Commonwealth at 3-2. The Greyhounds erupted for 43 points in the second half after trailing 14-9 at the intermission. Moravian also ran for 220 yards after halftime after having minus-three yards in the first two quarters.

Barlok got Moravian on the board with 19 seconds left in the first quarter on a nine-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Charlie Bowden (Parlin, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial HS). The Greyhounds led 6- 0 after the missed extra-point. Bowden completed 16 of 24 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. After a pair of Susquehanna touchdowns, Moravian would score on a 25-yard field goal by junior Jim McIntyre (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown HS) with 19 seconds left before halftime to make the score 14-9.

The Greyhounds would blow the game open in the third quarter with three touchdowns in the first 8:02. Barlok scored the first two touchdowns on runs of 14 and seven yards. Bowden completed a two-point conver- sion to sophomore wide receiver Jarod Rhinehart (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS). Rhinehart grabbed five passes for 73 yards in the game. Moravian’s third touchdown was a 12-yard pass from Bowden to junior wideout Michael Abbate (South Plainfield, NJ/Bishop Ahr HS). McIntyre’s extra-point gave the Greyhounds a 31-14 lead with 6:58 left in the third quarter. Barlok’s second touchdown run and Abbate’s touchdown receptions were set up by the Moravian defense recovering fumbles. Abbate caught five passes for 75 yards.

The teams would trade touchdowns for the rest of the game. After a Susquehanna score, Moravian would get the lead back to 38-20 on a two-yard touchdown run by Bowden and a McIntyre kick. The Crusaders would cut the score to 38-27 Moravian with 11:33 left to play. The Greyhounds would add seven more points on a 24-yard run by Barlok and a McIntyre kick with 10:06 in the fourth quarter to take a 45-27 lead. Susquehanna scored its final touchdown with 7:57 left in the game to set the score at 45-33 Moravian.

Barlok completed the game’s scoring with his school record 95-yard scamper with 3:24 to play. Barlok took the handoff and followed his blockers off the left side of the line, made one Susquehanna player miss and was off to the races. His run broke Jack Iannantuono’s record of 91 yards set in 1970 at Delaware Valley. McIntyre’s extra-point made the final score of 52-33. Senior running back P.J. Jankowicz (Belle Mead, NJ/ Hillsborough HS) added 20 yards in the game to pass Iannantuono in the Moravian record books with 2,041 career-rushing yards.

Senior cornerback Doug Joseph (Allentown/Parkland HS), sophomore linebacker John Cupples (Allentown/Allentown Central Catholic HS) and sophomore cornerback Nate Pogue (Bethlehem/Liberty HS) each had 11 tackles in the game and combined to break-up seven passes. Cupples, sophomore safety Jarrod Pence (Livingston, NJ/Livingston HS) and junior safety Mike Wukitsch (Allentown/Allentown Central Catholic HS) each had interceptions in the game while sophomore defensive end Brian Cascioli (Center Valley/Southern Lehigh HS) and freshman linebacker Steve Maslanek (Stockholm, NJ/Vernon Township HS) each had a fumble recovery. Women’s Cross Country 3-0 (Commonwealth Conference 0-0, MAC 0-0) Last Week – 1st of 13 teams at 2000 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships, Allentown College, Center Valley, PA. This Week – no competition scheduled Behind the running of the junior class, the Greyhounds won their eighth straight Middle Atlantic Conference Championship with a near-perfect score of 18 points. Junior Heidi Wolfsberger (Moosic/ River- side HS) won her second straight MAC Individual Championship with a first place time of 18:17.83 over the 5,100-meter course at Allentown College.

Moravian had four other runners in the top ten in the 117-competitor field. Junior Emily Shertzer (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin HS) placed second in 18:42.93 while junior Kim Jaick (Coopersburg/ Southern Lehigh HS) was third in 18:54.80. Junior Erin Boyle (Philadelphia/Nazareth Academy) placed fifth in 19:11.33 while senior Hannah Wood (Palm/Upper Perkiomen HS) was seventh with a time of 20:03.18. The Greyhounds had four more finishers in the top 20 with sophomore Jen Wagner (Riegelsville/ Wilson HS) placing 12th in 20:16.09, freshman Ashley Kimmet (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS) in 14th place at 20:21.36, junior Amanda Samok (Palmerton/Palmerton HS) at 16th in 20:24.76 and freshman Jamie Marks (Macungie/Emmaus HS) in 18th place with a time of 20:26.52.

Rounding out the Moravian runners were freshman Angie Morgan (Bethlehem/Liberty HS) in 26th position with a time of 20:52.45, freshman Jessica Geissler (Wyomissing/Wyomissing HS) in 27th at 20:56.72 and junior Tiffany Catalino (Bethlehem/Freedom HS) at 37th in 21:11.34.

Women’s Soccer – 15-4 (Commonwealth Conference 6-1, MAC 11-3) Last Week – Lost to %Messiah, 2-1. %Commonwealth Conference Semifinals Season Complete Senior forward Becky Matijasich (Alpharetta, GA/Wilson West Lawn {PA} HS) scored off a pass from sophomore midfielder Erin Glynn (Bernardsville, NJ/Bernards HS) in the 16th minute to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead but Moravian couldn’t hold on to beat Commonwealth Conference powerhouse Messiah College for the second time in five days, falling 2-1 in the Commonwealth Conference Semifinals. Moravian completes the 2000 season with a record of 15-4, its first-ever postseason appearance and a three-way tie for the Commonwealth Conference regular season. Senior goal Becky Roe (Worcester, NY/Worcester Central HS) made two saves in her final match as the Greyhounds held an 11-7 advantage in shots.

Men’s Cross Country – 0-0 (Commonwealth Conference 0-0, MAC 0-0) Last Week – 4th of 12 teams at 2000 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships, Allentown College, Center Valley, PA. This Week – no competition scheduled Sophomore Wes Zimmerman (Boyertown/Boyertown HS) placed 11th of 115 runners to lead the Greyhounds to a fourth place team finish at the 2000 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships. Zimmerman completed the 8,000-meter course in 27:40.22.

Freshman Joe Grady (Nanticoke/Nanticoke HS) was second for the Greyhounds in 27:48.52 while sophomore George Wacker (Honesdale/Honesdale HS) placed 24th in 28:08.07. Rounding out the top five for Moravian were junior Chris DeWalt (Easton/Easton HS) in 33rd place at 28:29.16 and freshman Sean McDonnell (Scranton/Scranton Prep) at 35th with a time of 28:31.25.

Senior Damon Rutherford (Reading/Exeter HS) ran for the first time in a month and finished 42nd in 28:45.26 while sophomore Matt Plewinski (Hatfield/North Penn HS) finished 53rd in 29:16.12. Moravian’s final two competitors were sophomore Justin Arnold (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge HS) in 57th place at 29:22.33 and junior Josh Heebner (Lansdale/North Penn HS) in 70th position at 29:59.57. Men’s Soccer – 8-10 (Commonwealth Conference 4-3, MAC 7-6) Last Week – Lost to *Elizabethtown, 1-0; Defeated *Juniata, 3-0. *Commonwealth match This Week – Mon, Oct. 30th at Muhlenberg College, 3:00 p.m.; Wed., Nov. 1st at in Commonwealth Conference Semifinals Freshman goalie Greg Bechtel (Reading/Exeter HS) made five saves in his first start in over three weeks and he allowed just one goal but the Greyhounds fell to Elizabethtown College, 1-0, in Commonwealth Conference action last Tuesday. The match was played a day earlier than scheduled due both schools hosting women’s soccer playoff matches on Wednesday.

Freshman midfielder Brian Donofrio (Havertown/Archbishop Carroll HS) scored in the 49th minute to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead in route to a 3-0 victory over in Commonwealth Conference action to clinch the Greyhounds’ first playoff appearance since 1991. The Greyhounds are now the third seed in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs and will play in the semifinals at Elizabethtown College on Wednes- day, November 1st. Donofrio scored on an unassisted goal to put Moravian on the board after a scoreless first half. Moravian took a 2-0 lead in the 67th minute on a score by freshman midfielder Tim Shannon (Leesport/ Schuylkill Valley HS) off a pass from junior midfielder Paul Melniczek (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic HS). The Greyhounds completed the scoring in the 81st minute on a goal by freshman midfielder Anthony Merz (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan HS) off an assist from freshman midfielder Mike Grillo (Pennington, NJ/ Pennington School). Bechtel made four saves for his first career shutout

Women’s Volleyball – 20-7 (Commonwealth Conference 5-2, MAC 8-2) Last Week – Defeated *Widener, 3-0; Defeated $Western Maryland, 3-1; Defeated $Salisbury State, 3-1; Lost to $Roberts Wesleyan, 3-2; Defeated $Gettysburg, 3-2. *Commonwealth match, $Elizabethtown College Tournament This Week – Wed., Nov. 1st at Susquehanna University, 7:00 p.m. in Commonwealth Conference Semifi- nals Freshman outside hitter Kim Zipf (Wyomissing/Holy Name HS) had 13 kills and 12 digs to lead the Greyhounds in a 15-4, 15-3, 15-13 victory over Widener University in Commonwealth Conference action and to clinch a tie for second place in the regular season. Moravian will be the number three seed in the playoffs and travel to Susquehanna University on Wednesday, November 1st for a Commonwealth Conference Semifinal. Senior middle Becky Falk (Allentown/Dieruff HS) had ten kills in the win while junior right side hitter Sara Walkiewicz (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS) added nine kills and 12 digs. Freshman setter Amy Lawrence (Gettysburg/Delone Catholic HS) had 38 assists and 11 digs in the match.

Zipf led Moravian to a 3-1 record at the Elizabethtown College Halloween Classic and was named to the All-Tournament Team along with Lawrence. Zipf had 15 kills and 32 digs to lead the Greyhounds in a 14- 16, 15-5, 15-3, 15-9 victory over Western Maryland College in the first round of the tournament. Lawrence added 44 assists and 25 digs Walkiewicz had nine kills and 16 digs. Lawrence had 50 assists and 22 digs while Zipf had 18 kills and 25 digs to lead the Greyhounds to a 15-10, 17-15, 12-15, 15-10 triumph over Salisbury State University. Walkiewicz had five kills and 23 digs while senior defensive specialist Emily Shonk (Ligonier/Ligonier HS) contributed four service aces and 15 digs. Freshman outside hitter Shannon McNeil (Reading/Reading Central Catholic HS) had five kills and 15 digs while senior middle hitters Falk and Sara Young (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock HS) contributed 14 and 13 kills respectively.

Zipf had 24 kills and 28 digs to lead the Greyhounds in a 13-15, 15-6, 8-15, 15-13, 11-15 loss to Rob- erts in the championship bracket of the tournament. Lawrence ran the Moravian offense with 66 assists and she added 14 digs while Walkiewicz had 17 kills and 27 digs and Young had 16 kills and three blocks in the loss. Zipf had 29 kills and 29 digs while Lawrence had 62 assists and 12 digs to lead the Grey- hounds to a 7-15, 15-13, 16-14, 13-15, 15-13 win over to finish second in the tournament. Walkiewicz contributed 16 kills and 13 digs in the match while Falk had 12 kills and four blocks and Young added seven kills. Greyhound Weekly Update, October 30, 2000 (-5555-)

Women’s Tennis – 12-2 (Commonwealth Conference 6-1, MAC 10-1) Season Complete Senior Corinne Kleinsmith (Shillington/Governor Mifflin HS) has been named to the 2000 Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth All-Star Team and Greyhound head coach Dawn Ketterman-Benner, a native of Lititz, PA, has been tabbed as the Commonwealth Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. Kleinsmith and Ketterman-Benner helped lead Moravian to an overall record of 12-2 and the squad’s fourth MAC Team Championship in five seasons this fall. Since 1994, the Greyhounds have posted a record of 101-11 and won four Commonwealth titles in addition to the four MAC Championships. Kleinsmith, who moved to the number one singles slot this fall, posted a singles record of 5-8 and she has a career singles mark of 25-10. This season, Kleinsmith teamed up with sophomore Jen Genevese (Whitehall/Whitehall HS) to record a 12-4 record at the number one doubles position. The duo was 3-1 in the MAC Individual Tournament with the loss coming in the championship match.
