nd 2 OECD Meeting of Mining Regions and Cities DarwinDarwin -– Nhulunbuy Nhulunbuy 23 – 24 November 2018 Nhulunbuy Itinerary P a g e | 2 DAY ONE: Friday 23 November 2018 Morning Tour (Approx. 9am – 12pm) 1. Board Room discussions - visions for future, land tenure & other Join Gumatj CEO and other guests for an open discussion surrounding future projects and vision and land tenure. 2. Gulkula Bauxite mining operation A wholly owned subsidiary of Gumatj Corporation Ltd, the Gulkula Mine is located on the Dhupuma Plateau in North East Arnhem Land. The small- scale bauxite operation aims to deliver sustainable economic benefits to the local Yolngu people and provide on the job training to build careers in the mining industry. It is the first Indigenous owned and operated bauxite mine. 3. Gulkula Regional Training Centre & Garma Festival The Gulkula Regional training is adjacent to the mine and provides young Yolngu men and women training across a wide range of industry sectors. These include; extraction (mining), civil construction, building construction, hospitality and administration. This is also where Garma Festival is hosted partnering with Yothu Yindi Foundation. 4. Space Base The Arnhem Space Centre will be Australia’s first commercial spaceport. It will include multiple launch sites using a variety of launch vehicles to provide sub-orbital and orbital access to space for commercial, research and government organisations. 11:30 – 12pm Lunch at Gumatj Knowledge Centre 5. Gumatj Timber mill The Timber mill sources stringy bark eucalyptus trees to make strong timber roof trusses and decking. They also make beautiful furniture, homewares and cultural instruments. To minimise the environmental impact of sourcing timber, Gumatj mill has a special agreement with mining company Rio Tinto, which allows it to source trees prior to the company clearing land for its bauxite mine near Nhulunbuy. Afternoon Tour (Approx. 12.30 – 5.30pm) 6. Tour the Rio Tinto Gove operations Rio Tinto Gove Operations has been supplying the global aluminium industry with bauxite for more than 40 years. Using conventional open-pit mining methods, Gove Operations consists of a continuous bauxite mining operation, 18 kilometres of overland conveyor to transport mined bauxite to the export wharf, stockpiles and a ship loader. In November 2017, Rio Tinto announced that it would not restart the Gove Alumina Refinery which had been curtailed and under care and maintenance since 2014. Since curtailment, annual bauxite production has more than doubled. Since announcing the closure of the Refinery detailed works have been undertaken to determine a process to safely remove the infrastructure located at the Refinery. Dinner will be held at the Gove Boat Club, with invitations extended to regional stakeholders Accommodation will kindly be provided by Rio Tinto. P a g e | 3 DAY TWO: Saturday 24 November 2018 Indigenous Cultural Immersion (Approx. 8:30am – 12:15pm) Day 2 is an opportunity to immerse yourself in an Indigenous Cultural experience hosted by the Traditional Owners of the Nhulunbuy Township. Walk with the locals and share in a custom designed journey hosted and crafted by Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation specifically for the OECD East Arnhem Land visitation. Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation Immersion 9:30 am: Welcome to Country followed by Bunggul (performed by Rirratjingu traditional owners/dancers) at Rika Park, Yirrkala. Locals will be making spears on the side and will provide cultural information, interacting with guests. RAC will engage with the audience and encourage participation in the dance. 10:15 am: Meet and greet at Rirratjingu Board room. This session will provide insight to local culture, the history of land rights and what RAC does as a corporation. The relationship between TO’s & Rio Tinto including the Gove TO Agreement will be explored, including business opportunities and other positives for the region. 11 am – 12:15pm: Visit to Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Centre, Yirrkala. Enjoy a personalised guided tour of Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Arts Centre. Established since 1976, this is a multiple award-winning remote Indigenous art centre, digital studio and museum of the Yolngu people of North-East Arnhem Land or Miwatj Region. The art and craft of Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka is drawn from Yirrkala and the approximately 25 homeland centres within a radius of 200km. Visit the centre and meet some of the artists. 12:30pm – 2pm - Lunch will be held at the Walkabout Lodge Return to Darwin (leave restaurant 2:00pm for 2:30pm check in. Depart Gove Airport 3:25pm flight) .
