It was only their second World Cup appearance and they have not been back since. It took Turkey ten attempts to qualify for their first UEFA European Championship final tournament, and after losing all three matches at EURO '96 they reached the quarter-finals at UEFA EURO 2000 under Mustafa Denizli. They went one step further eight years later in Austria/ Switzerland, a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Croatia putting Fatih Terim's team into the semi-finals, where they lost 3-2 to Germany. After missing out in Poland/Ukraine, they returned to the finals at UEFA EURO 2016 by qualifying as the best third-placed side over the nine preliminary sections. EURO pedigree Matches played Overall: P122 W47 D29 L46 F145 A167 Final tournament: P12 W3 D2 L7 F11 A18 Qualifying: P110 W44 D27 L39 F134 A149 Having not managed a win in their previous two qualifying campaigns, Turkey eventually reached a first finals at EURO '96, but Terim's men could not muster a point in England. They bettered that in 2000, battling through the group stage before a 2-0 quarter-final loss to Portugal. A play-off defeat by Latvia meant Güneş' Turkey missed UEFA EURO 2004 but with Terim back at the helm they starred at UEFA EURO 2008. Last-gasp victories over Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Croatia took them through to the semi-finals, where they finally met their match in Germany. Despite making a bright start to a tough Group A in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2012, losses in Germany and, more surprisingly, Azerbaijan put Guus Hiddink's side on the back foot. Turkey recovered to finish second ahead of Belgium but Croatia were too strong in the play-offs, a 3-0 first-leg win in Istanbul proving decisive. Memorable EURO matches 20/06/2008: Turkey 1-1 Croatia (aet, 3-1 on pens), UEFA EURO 2008 quarter-finals Semih Şentürk's 122nd-minute equaliser stopped Slaven Bilić in his tracks, Turkey winning the shoot-out. 11/06/2008: Switzerland 1-2 Turkey, UEFA EURO 2008 group stage In a downpour, substitute Semih equalised before Arda Turan's 92nd-minute winner. 19/06/2000: Turkey 2-0 Belgium, UEFA EURO 2000 group stage Two Hakan Şükür goals fired Turkey into the quarter-finals for the first time at the co-hosts' expense. Did you know? Having failed to qualify in their first nine UEFA European Championship campaigns, Turkey have reached four of the last six final tournaments. *Last updated on 18/11/2015 3 UEFA EURO 2016 - FINAL TOURNAMENT DRAW Saturday 12 December 2015 - 18.00CET (18.00 local time) Press kit Paris, France Turkey - Coach profile Fatih Terim Date of birth: 4 September 1953 Nationality: Turkish Playing career: Adana Demirspor, Galatasaray AŞ Coaching career: MKE Ankaragücü, Göztepe AŞ, Turkey Under-21, Turkey (three times), Galatasaray AŞ (three times), ACF Fiorentina, AC Milan • A central defender, Terim represented Galatasaray for over a decade and played 51 games for Turkey, 32 as captain. Began his coaching career with Ankaragücü and Göztepe, before being named assistant to national team boss Sepp Piontek and put in charge of the U21s in 1990. • Appointed Turkey coach in 1993, Terim led them to EURO '96. They lost all their matches in England, but just getting to the final tournament, Turkey's first since the 1954 FIFA World Cup, was a major landmark. • Returned to Galatasaray after the EURO, winning four league titles and the 2000 UEFA Cup. Serie A came calling and Terim took the helm at Fiorentina and Milan before rejoining Galatasaray; however, a run of disappointing results brought about a temporary retirement in 2004. • Reappointed Turkey coach in 2005, Terim – known as 'İmparator' (The Emperor) for his leadership skills – could not guide them through a 2006 World Cup play-off against Switzerland. Success followed at UEFA EURO 2008 with Terim steering Turkey to the semi-finals but he resigned following unsuccessful bid to reach the 2010 World Cup. • Back for a third spell as Galatasaray boss in July 2011, in his first season he inspired Cimbom to their first Süper Lig crown in four years. Repeated the feat in 2013 when also helping Galatasaray to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. Named head of the national team for a third time – on a part-time basis – in August 2013, he parted company with Galatasaray in September to assume the role full time. Was unable to lead Turkey to the 2014 World Cup despite winning three of his four qualifiers in charge, but did take them to UEFA EURO 2016. 4 UEFA EURO 2016 - FINAL TOURNAMENT DRAW Saturday 12 December 2015 - 18.00CET (18.00 local time) Press kit Paris, France Turkey - Team facts EURO record Pld W D L GF GA Overall 122 47 29 46 145 167 Final tournament 12 3 2 7 11 18 Qualifying 110 44 27 39 134 149 UEFA European Championship records: Turkey History 2012 – did not qualify 2008 – semi-finals 2004 – did not qualify 2000 – quarter-finals 1996 – group stage 1992 – did not qualify 1988 – did not qualify 1984 – did not qualify 1980 – did not qualify 1976 – did not qualify 1972 – did not qualify 1968 – did not qualify 1964 – did not qualify 1960 – did not qualify Final tournament win 2-0: Turkey v Belgium, 19/06/00 Final tournament loss 3-0: Turkey v Denmark, 19/06/96 Qualifying win 5-0: Turkey v Moldova, 11/10/06 5-0: Turkey v Liechtenstein, 16/10/02 5-0: Turkey v Iceland, 12/10/94 Qualifying defeat 8-0: England v Turkey, 14/10/87 Final tournament appearances 9: Rüştü Reçber 7: Hakan Şükür 7: Ogün Temizkanoğlu 7: Arif Erdem 7: Alpay Özalan Final tournament goals 3: Semih Şentürk 2: Hakan Şükür 2: Nihat Kahveci 2: Arda Turan 1: Okan Buruk 1: Uğur Boral Overall appearances 38: Hakan Şükür 38: Rüştü Reçber 31: Tugay Kerimoğlu 30: Alpay Özalan 30: Arda Turan 26: Emre Belözoğlu 26: Hamit Altıntop 25: Ogün Temizkanoğlu 5 UEFA EURO 2016 - FINAL TOURNAMENT DRAW Saturday 12 December 2015 - 18.00CET (18.00 local time) Press kit Paris, France Overall goals 21: Hakan Şükür 9: Nihat Kahveci 7: Arda Turan 7: Burak Yılmaz 5: Arif Erdem 5: Tayfur Havutçu UEFA EURO and FIFA World Cup campaigns Season Competition Result Pld W D L GF GA 2016 EURO qualifying Qualifying round, 3rd in group 10 5 3 2 14 9 2014 World Cup qualifying Qualifying round, 4th in group 10 5 1 4 16 9 2012 EURO qualifying Play-off for Final Tournament 12 5 3 4 13 14 2010 World Cup qualifying Qualifying round, 3rd in group 10 4 3 3 13 10 2008 EURO finals Semi-finals 5 2 1 2 8 9 2008 EURO qualifying Qualifying round, 2nd in group (qualified) 12 7 3 2 25 11 2006 World Cup qualifying Play-off for Final Tournament 14 7 5 2 27 13 2004 EURO qualifying Play-off for Final Tournament 10 6 2 2 19 8 2002 World Cup finals 3rd place 7 4 1 2 10 6 2002 World Cup qualifying Play-off for Final Tournament (qualified) 12 8 3 1 24 8 2000 EURO finals Quarter-finals 4 1 1 2 3 4 2000 EURO qualifying Play-off for Final Tournament (qualified) 10 5 4 1 16 7 1998 World Cup qualifying Qualifying round, 3rd in group 8 4 2 2 21 9 1996 EURO finals Final tournament - Group stage, 4th in group 3 0 0 3 0 5 1996 EURO qualifying Preliminary round, 2nd in group (qualified) 8 4 3 1 16 8 1994 World Cup qualifying Qualifying round, 5th in group 10 3 1 6 11 19 1992 EURO qualifying Preliminary round, 4th in group 6 0 0 6 1 14 1990 World Cup qualifying Qualifying round, 3rd in group 8 3 1 4 12 10 1988 EURO qualifying Preliminary round, 4th in group 6 0 2 4 2 16 1986 World Cup qualifying Qualifying round, 5th in group 8 0 1 7 2 24 1984 EURO qualifying Preliminary round, 4th in group 8 3 1 4 8 16 1982 World Cup qualifying Qualifying round, 5th in group 8 0 0 8 1 22 1980 EURO qualifying Preliminary round, 2nd in group 6 3 1 2 5 5 1978 World Cup qualifying Qualifying round, 3rd in group 6 2 1 3 9 5 1976 EURO qualifying Preliminary round, 3rd in group 6 2 2 2 5 10 1974 World Cup qualifying Qualifying round, 2nd in group 6 2 2 2 5 3 1972 EURO qualifying Preliminary round, 3rd in group 6 2 1 3 5 13 1970 World Cup qualifying Qualifying round, 3rd in group 4 0 0 4 2 13 1968 EURO qualifying Preliminary round, 4th in group 6 1 2 3 3 8 1966 World Cup qualifying Qualifying round, 4th in group 6 1 0 5 4 19 1964 EURO qualifying Preliminary round 2 0 0 2 0 7 1962 World Cup qualifying Qualifying round, 2nd in group 4 2 0 2 4 4 1960 EURO qualifying Round of 16 2 1 0 1 2 3 1954 World Cup finals Final tournament - Group stage, 3rd in group 3 1 0 2 10 11 1954 World Cup qualifying Qualifying round, 1st in group (qualified) 3 1 1 1 4 6 1950 World Cup qualifying Qualifying round, 1st in group 1 1 0 0 7 0 6 UEFA EURO 2016 - FINAL TOURNAMENT DRAW Saturday 12 December 2015 - 18.00CET (18.00 local time) Press kit Paris, France Turkey - Head to head against

  • Il Napoli Ha Ingaggiato Carlo Ancelotti, Il Tecnico Italiano Più Titolato in Attività, Con Un Triennale Ed Un Chiaro Progetto: Vincere

For the leaders of the national associations and of UEFA, there is no such thing as a quiet period either. This year, for example, UEFA’s member associations first had the delicate task of deciding who UEFA’s president would be for the next four years. Just a few months later, in April, it will be up to the UEFA Executive Committee to decide where EURO 2012 will take place. 2007 is also likely to be a crucial time in relations between European football and the European Union.
