Both men credit Merle Miller and the article What It Means to Be a Homosexual with paving the way for their coming out. It will be a reference book to most people but it is a short read and an interesting one ...a glimpse into the beginnings of gay liberation. BORN THIS WAY, Real Stories of Growing Up Gay by Paul Vitagliano is right on topic with the Merle Miller book, just 40 years later. It was published by Quirk Books on October 9, 2012, right before National Coming Out Day. It is based on the blog of the same name, Born This Way. It features 100 photographs and personal narratives about coming out ...from the 1940s to today. Vitagliano is DJ Paul V., a club and radio DJ and an event promoter ...a self- proclaimed “promosexual”. Most of the “narratives’ are from what would be termed ordinary homosexuals, if there is such a thing. Baird Thesis Adviser: Ellen Gorman, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Studio 54, the infamous New York City discotheque open from 1977 to 1980, was a notorious site in New York City for not only being one of the most sought-after venues in nightlife, but also for its ruthless red velvet rope culture. Disco was a defining artifact in American culture in the 1970s and greatly reflected the social and political atmosphere across the country. With the culmination of various political upheavals such as the Vietnam War and the Watergate Scandal, many Americans simply wanted to party, use drugs, and openly explore their sexuality. Studio 54 was, arguably, the most influential and well-known of the many discos— admired and loathed by those within and on the outside of the disco scene. Many outsiders and eager spectators observed the club as exclusionary and dictator-like. This thesis deconstructs the red velvet rope culture and analyzes the innate behavior and qualities of the clubbers with the aim to understand how these people contributed to the tremendous popularity of Studio 54. Gossip columns, newspapers, tabloids and archived footage offers compelling insight to the way of the disco-door as well as the qualities and behaviors that club goers possessed as such to gain admission.

I'm not sure what they are planning or hoping to do, but as long as they are peaceful and quiet and do not disrupt the proceedings, if they want to sit there it's fine with me. The counterculture of San Francisco in the 1960’s worked to reMove itself from MainstreaM society by creating their own realM on the outside of “normal”. The counterculture aMong the youth in San Francisco, contrary to popular belief, was a highly disorganized MoveMent with little to no political motives. It was an oddly unified chaos fueled by the idea of trying to find oneself and dig deeper into the individual. While many other youth moveMents were focused on the ideas of coming together in society, the counterculture in Haight-Ashbury focused on the individual. The counterculture moveMent that evolved in the Haight during the 1960’s was doomed to end from the start as the ideals of dropping out of society could never fully be achieved. Once the moveMent was picked up by the main streaM media, the people of the neighborhood felt that they were in a zoo as people from all over flocked to San Francisco to witness and sometiMes even try and take part in their culture. The music and events that evolved within the Haight neighborhood becaMe one of the main outlets of expression for the hippies as it works hand in hand with the culture that they created there. The music scene and sound showcase ideals of individuality and the uniqueness of it all shows how the hippies were trying to create their own reality and separate from the mainstreaM.
