HECK (Riyadh,Saudi Arabia) Abstract The financialand economicstrengths of the early Islamic state have been a source of ongoing speculation,causing some scholarsto even questionmedieval Makkah's economic reasonto exist. This articleexplores the role of preciousmetals-gold and silver--in lend- ing vitality to the economyof WesternArabia in the formativeyears of the Ddr al-Islam. Combiningprimary source evidence with artifactsand qualitativeand quantitativeanaly- sis of mining residuals,including carbon 14 dating, it producesevidence suggestingthat such metalsplayed a far more significantrole in contemporarycommerce and industrythan has been heretoforegenerally acknowledged. The Historical Perspective The economic dynamicthat impelled the early Islamic state remainsa source of currentintellectual controversy.Even now, after decades of focused West- ern research, works continue to appear that add challenging new dimensions to scholarly debate over the incipient vitality that characterizedthe commerce of the fledgling Muslim empire. Most recently, Shaykh Hamad al-Jasir has appended illuminatingnew insights into the productionof precious metals in medieval Arabia in his annotatededition of al-Hamdani'sseminal work: Kitdb al-Jawharatayn al-'Atiqatayn al-Ma'i'atayn: al-Safr-' wa al-Bayda'. A 1991 ar- ticle by Husayn S~bir, technical advisor to the French Geological Mission to Saudi Arabia, likewise adds valuable input based on in situ knowledge and recent archaeological discoveries that support the evidence provided by the medieval Islamic sources.') Today Arabia, which legend holds was home to the famed mines of biblical King Solomon, is experiencing a significant rebirth of this historic industrial heritage, as precious metals mining, a source of significantwealth at the time of the rise of Islam, is once again gaining attention.Currently there are 782 1) Al-Hamdani 1987, pp. 203 ff.; H. KoninklijkeBrill NV, Leiden, 1999 JESHO42,3 GOLDMINING IN ARABIAAND THERISE OF THE ISLAMICSTATE 365 major known gold occurrencesin the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia-in sites that usually also contain associatedadmixtures of silver, copper,lead, zinc, and iron ores. Of these sites, 31 are estimatedto contain more than 1,000 kilogramsof gold, and 99 contain gold reserves in the 100 to 999 kilogramrange. Many of these deposits are extremely rich in gold content--averagingtwenty to thirty- five grams per metric ton, contrastedwith an average worldwideyield of about 7 grams.2) The Saudi DirectorateGeneral for MineralResources, in fact, has identified more than 800 potentially commercially viable hard mineral sites in modern Saudi Arabia.At many of the sites identified,there is clear geological evidence confirming previous mining activities. Indeed, more than 1,000 locations in WesternArabia show signs of historic mining. Carbon 14 datings from wood residuals at the smelters that supportedthese mining operations indicate that many of these activities dated to the classic periodof Islam.3)Currency minting operationsalso may have taken place using the ore yields of these sites. Sug- gestive of this possibility,an Umayyadcoin datingto the year 105/724, includes the phrase:"the mine of the Commanderof the Faithful in the IHijaz."There are likewise numerous contemporarycopper coins (fultis) bearing the same inscription.4) Currently,several of these sites are under active development.Operations at Mahd al-Dhahabcommenced in 1990. The productionof this mine, believed to contain 1.1 million tons of ore, is projectedto reach 2.5 metric tons of gold per year. The Sukhaybaratmine, situated 187 miles east of al-Madinahon the his- toric Arabiancommercial route to Iraq, also startedup in September,1991. Its ore reserves are assessed at 8.4 million tons. Though its annualproduction was originally estimated at 3,300 pounds of gold, more than thirteentons of gold alreadyhad been producedby the close of 1996-valued at nearly $155 million at then currentglobal market prices. " GOLDMINING IN ARABIAAND THERISE OF THE ISLAMICSTATE 367 Leasing licenses similarly have recently been granted to commence opera- tions at a site known as "al-Masani'," meaning"the factories"- so-called for its proliferationof medieval smelting operations--locatedin Wadi Sa'dah, 75 miles northwestof Najran(at 18 degrees, 8 minutesN latitude,43 degrees,51 minutes E longitude)on the key inland medieval commercialroute connectingMakkah with Yemen. It is estimated to contain some 8.5 million tons of gold, silver, zinc, and copper ore, requiring17 years of productionemploying currenttech- nologies.6)Development licences likewise are pendingat Hamdah,Jabal Sayyid, and Bulgah; and anotherhistoric mine in this region--called al-Ma'malah,also meaning "factory"-is also currentlyunder active exploration.It is located in Wadi Turabah,on al-Ta'if-al-'Aqiqroad (at 21 degrees, 4 minutes N latitude; 41 degrees 20 minutes E longitude), and is believed to contain 960,000 metric tons of ore. In all, the Kingdom is estimated to possess more than 20 million tons of commerciallyexploitable gold ore.7) That Saudi Arabia should now emerge as a major hard minerals producer, however, should come as no surpriseto serious studentsof the region's history. The ancient and medieval sources aboundwith referencesto such mining activi- ties. The classicalGreek, Roman, and Persian sources, among them Agatharchides,8) Pliny,9) Strabo,1o)Polybius,") and Diodorus Siculus,12) all attest to the abun- dance of gold and silver on the ArabianPeninsula in their eras. The latterstates that Arabiangold was so pure that no smelting was necessary.Biblical Midian, a region historicallylegendary for its gold, was situatedin the region surround- G.C. Miles 1948, pp. 106-109. An inscribed stone found in the residual medieval gold tail- ings at Mahd al-Dhahab by geologist K.S. Twichell in the 1940s reads: "In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate, 'Abd Allah Ja'far, the Imam al- Muqtadir bi-Allah, Commanderof the faithful, may God preserve him, ordered the minister al-Hasan 'Ali b. 'Isd, may God perpetuatehis great work, to build a wide highway for the pilgrims of God's house, with the hope of earning a rich reward from God. This work was administeredby the judge Muhammadb. Mfsa, may God exalt him, and carried out by Abu Ahmad b. 'Abd al-'Aziz and Mus'ab b. Writing the prophetic biography (PB) is essentially the job of the historians as they were the first to take interest in writing the prophetic biography (PB) as an integrated work. This was done either as a dedicated work like that of Ibn Hisham, Ibn Is’haq, Al-Halabi and others; or as a part of historic encyclopedias like those of Al Tabari, Ibn Al Atheer, Ibn Kuthair, Al-Mas’udi, Al Yaqubi, and others. The Muhaddithin have left on impact on highlighting some of the chief points in the prophetic biography (PB). It is well known that the writers of the prophetic biography tended to apply the methodologies of the historians in conveying the events of the PB, however, at times, they used to adopt the methodology of the Muhaddithin in weighing between the conflicting narrations, particularly those who had a wide scope of knowledge of the Muhaddithin’s methodologies.

The decision of the isolation seems to be one of the most serious of these reactions. Although it is generally called as boycott, in my view it is more appropriate to call it isolation. This decision was not only applied to the Muslim community, but also to those who were non Muslims and supported the Muslims. By this decision, the Prophet Muhammad and His close relatives were subject to isolation in an area called “the District of Abu Talib” for two-three years. Later, this event was described in deep consideration by the Muslim historians.1 In order to be more effectively against Muslims, the idolaters posted this declaration on the wall of Ka’bah. However, when this event bothered the close relatives of Muslims who were subject to a great distress, this decision was annulled and then Muslims were free. Because of this tragic application, some Muslim writers gave some rhetoric and mysterious knowledge in their writings. For example, some writers claimed that the paper of this isolation decision was eaten by desert ants or tree worms except the word of God and Messenger.

He is one of the pillars of the science and the most prominent intellectual, and to reach this rank and graduate it scientifically with what is recognized as a wonderful intellectual achievement is reflected in his remarkable scientific position and the ongoing praise of many scientists, thinkers and historians over time. He wrote many religious and jurisprudential books, including "measurement and scale" and "rank in the application of the supervision. He issued many fatwas and some of them singled out the Christians, especially in the construction of churches and restoration. He was subjected to both rejection and acceptance particularly in the case where he refused to demolish any church built before the Islamic conquest and others supported the demolition of churches built after the Islamic conquest, where this incident happened as a result of the arrival of the Christians of arrogance in their treatment with Muslims, especially the people of Egypt; this resulted in fatwas.     Journal of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology ISSN: 1007-6735 The Anonymous Poetic Examples And Quoting Them By Ibn Hisham In His Book "Mughni Al-Labeeb" -A Regular Grammatical Study Dr. Talib Hameid Khalaf University ofAl-Anbar College of Physical Education Abstract The poetry has been given a much attention by the old linguists and grammarians as they considered it the second pillar of quotation after the Holy Koran. On this basis, they build the rules of grammar and its constant principles in language. The word "Example" subsequently has become limited to poetry. We therefore rarely find books of language and grammars devoid of poetic examples to such extent that they become indispensable. The old and late linguists' method is that they quote a lot the poetry whose teller is anonymous if it comes from a trustworthy authority. They, therefore, consider the verses mentioned in Seebawayh's book as the most proper examples adopted by predecessors and successors. Although many of these verses are anonymous, their authenticity and acceptance are unchallenged in the principles of grammar. The Grammarian Ibn Hisham followed the traces of his predecessors in quoting form the anonymous verses especially in his book "Mughni Al-Labeeb in Book Al-Aareeb" (The Enricher of The Knowledgeable from The Arab Books) in which he quoted many verses without mentioning their source. This simple paper is a study and analysis for some of the anonymous poetic examples. I present the grammatical points for which these examples are mentioned and the grammarians' views for them. I found some of these anonymous examples attributed to some poets, but mostly their tellers are still unknown as mentioned by the enquirers of grammar books in which these examples are mentioned.

In Muslim societies, various terms have been used for caliph; besides, persons holding different offices have been called this way. In Quran, the words “khalifa,” “khilafat” and “khulafa” do not bear any sense of head of the state; nevertheless, hadith sources employed such nominations together with expression that relate with leadership. For accession to caliphate, election-like methods were put to use during Rashidun era; nevertheless, the method was abandoned in upcoming periods. Moreover, during time of Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman, caliph represented all Muslims, while political dissolution began in Muslim society together with accession of Ali, and disputes became even more apparent in upcoming periods. Hereby study analyses transformations, accession methods, influence and abolition of caliphate, as well as the interest of Western colonialist powers in the institution, beginning from its appearance in 632 after decease of Muhammad (a.s.) until the abolition in 1924. These geographical boundaries later become most useful in finding plausible explanations for the reasons behind the inaccuracies in the early Islamic sources regarding many issues relating to the first Islamic conquest. In order to provide more support for an accurate picture of the first Islamic conquest of Aelia (Islamic Jerusalem) the study further analyses the history of Aelia beginning from the start of the first Islamic conquests in Syria in 13 A.H/ 634 A.D until the arrival of Umar Ibn al-Khattab in the region in 16 A.H/ 637 A.D.
