EEC/07/188/HQ Public Rights of Way Committee 10 July 2007 Definitive Map Review 2005-2007 Parish of Dunterton Report of the Director of Environment, Economy and Culture Please note that the following recommendation is subject to confirmation by the Public Rights of Way Committee before taking effect. Recommendation: It is recommended that the Committee note that to date there are no proposals for modifying the Definitive Map in the Parish of Dunterton. 1. Summary The report concerns the Definitive Map Review in the Parish of Dunterton. 2. Background The original survey under s. 27 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act, 1949, revealed no public rights of way to be recorded on the Definitive Map and Statement for Dunterton in the Tavistock Rural District. The reviews of the Definitive Map, under s. 33 of the 1949 Act, which commenced in the 1960s and 1970s but were never completed, produced no valid proposal for any addition, upgrading or deletion. The Limited Special Review of Roads Used as Public Paths (RUPPS), carried out in the 1970s, did not affect this parish. 3. Consultations The current review started in 2005 has consulted all statutory consultees and landowners. Proposals submitted to Devon County Council since the original Review were picked up, but produced no valid proposals for modification of the Definitive Map. General consultations have been carried out since January 2006 and the responses have been: County Councillor Mrs Marsh - no comment West Devon Borough Council - no comment Milton Abbot & Dunterton Parish Council - no comment British Horse Society - no comment Byways and Bridleways Trust - no comment Country Landowners' Association - no comment National Farmers' Union - no comment Open Spaces Society - no comment Ramblers' Association - no comment Trail Riders' Fellowship - no comment Cyclists Touring Club - no comment 4. Conclusion There are no other recommendations to make concerning any modifications. However, should any valid claim be made in the next six months it would seem sensible for it to be determined promptly rather than deferred. 5. Legal Considerations The implications/consequences of the recommendation have been taken into account in preparing the report. South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty 2010 Audit of Archived Historic Sources relating to the AONB An Audit of Historic Sources in English Archives relating to the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty January 2010 Overview This audit was commissioned as part of the 50 th Anniversary of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It is designed for more advanced research enthusiasts and professionals. The audit identifies and lists the locations of various bodies of material which relate to the history of the AONB. Local sources in summary There are several main sources for the parishes in the South Hams AONB. Devon Record Office contains material for the east of the area, whereas the western side is mainly held at the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office. Some areas are also covered by local museums such as the Brixham Heritage Museum which has a collection of photographs and documents. The Cookworthy Museum holdings appear to be principally prior to the 20 th century, although it has a collection of material on the 1 South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty 2010 Audit of Archived Historic Sources relating to the AONB Women’s Land Army and the South Hams Evacuation. It also holds an incomplete collection of the Kingsbridge Gazette, but the full collection is housed at the British Library Newspaper Library at Colindale in London. Plymouth Central Library, adjoining the Plymouth Museum and Art Gallery, also has the Western Morning News and Express and Echo on Microfiche.

The Identifications of the Domesday Manors of Devon
TIIE IDENTIFICATIONS OF THE DOMESDAY MANORS OF DEVON. BY ri. N. \YOETI{, F.G.8. (Ilead at Torquay, JuIy, 1893.) Tun Ibllowing paper coutains the result of a somewhat lengbhened attempt to identify the Domesday llanors of Devon. In most cases this san be done with absolute certainty-certainly in three-fourths of the total, Quite two-thirds of the remainder can be identified with reasonable probability. Comparatively few-under 10 per cent.-pre- sent auy substantial doubt. Tbe chief cause of uncertainty is the existeuce in several cases of a number of manors of the same name, especially in such instances as those of the Combes and Leighs. Here it, is difficult, sometimes quite impossible, to be sure which modern estate may represent a particular eutry. Few of the Domesday names seem to have disappeared, though some have been greatly modified, and it is clear that some must have been corrupted from the first by the foreign scribes engaged in the compilation. In order to eulist the sympathies of my fellow-members of the Association, and to bring to my aid that loca1 knowledge which in such an encluiry is all-important, I last year issued a preliminary list, in the hope that it might be lreely criti- cised and aurended. That expectation, however, has been disappointed. I have not received a dozen letters.
