    Imperial Technology and ‘Native’ Agency This book explores the impact of railways on colonial Indian society from the commencement of railway operations in the mid-nineteenth to the early decades of the twentieth century. The book represents a historiographical departure. Using new archival evidence as well as travelogues written by Indian railway travellers in Bengali and Hindi, this book suggests that the impact of railways on colonial Indian society were more heterogeneous and complex than anticipated either by India’s colonial railway builders or currently assumed by post-colonial scholars. At a related level, the book argues that this complex outcome of the impact of railways on colonial Indian society was a product of the interaction between the colonial context of technology transfer and the Indian railway passengers who mediated this process at an everyday level. In other words, this book claims that the colonised ‘natives’ were not bystanders in this process of imposition of an imperial technology from above. On the contrary, Indians, both as railway passengers and otherwise influenced the nature and the direction of the impact of an oft-celebrated ‘tool of Empire’. The historiographical departures suggested in the book are based on examining railway spaces as social spaces – a methodological index influenced by Henri Lefebvre’s idea of social spaces as means of control, domination and power. Mainul Islam* [Abstract : Chalantika (1930) Dictionary was published at a time when many Bangla dictionaries, large and small, were readily available. Despite having such a large number of dictionaries, Rajshekhar Basu realized the lack of a handy and at a time effective dictionary. So he decided to compile such a dictionary which will help much the readers who faces trouble reading modern literature. To meet the objectives Rajshekhar Basu followed some special strategies in the Compilation of Chalantika.This paper is concerned almost exclusively with the process and techniques of compilation applied in Chalantika] Key words : Lexicography, Compilation, Entry, Orthography, Synonym, Appendix. The effects of the Renaissance in the nineteenth century that were observed on education, social development, study of native culture etc. in British India became much clearer in the next century. Along with other sectors, many positive changes and developments were noticed in the study of language and literature. Study of Bangla Lexicography moved a step forward in twentieth century. The most important and mentionable achievement for this sector is that, native lexicographers took several initiatives to compile Bangla Dictionary and showed profound skill in their works. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract This study of the ideology of domesticity among the Bengali Hindu middle-class of Calcutta between 1880 and 1947 problematises the relation between anti-colonial nationalism and domesticity by contextualising it in a social history perspective. The thesis argues that the nationalist domestic ideology of the class was not a mere counter-discursive derivative of colonial power/knowledge. Its development was a dialectical process; in it the agency of the lived experience of domesticity, as the primary level of this group’s reproduction of its class identity, material anxieties, status, and gender ideology, interacted with nationalist counter- discursive abstractions. This dialectic, the thesis argues, made the domestic ideology of the colonial middle class a transforming entity.
