  • The Discourse of Muslim Intellectuals
THE DISCOURSE OF MUSLIM INTELLECTUALS AND `ULAMA’> IN INDONESIA A Historical Overview Khoirun Niam IAIN Sunan Ampel, Surabaya - Indonesia Abstract: Muslim intellectuals and `ulama’> are two notions necessary for attempts to get deep understanding of particularly Indonesian Muslim scholars. This paper analyses the discourse of Muslim intellectuals and `ulama’> in Indonesia before the independence period. The focus is on the practices and vectors which paved the way for the Muslim intellectuals and `ulama’> to come to the forefront in socio-political and cultural arena of Indonesia. The paper argues that the emergence of Indonesian intellectuals was not only influenced by Muslim organisations but also by Study Clubs. It further argues that irrespective of the diverse identification of Muslims intellectuals, those with secular educational background dominated the public spehere of Indonesia in the pre-independence period than those trained in pesantren or traditional Islamic education. This codition was a result of the nexus of the colonial contribution through so-called ethical policy, the rise of socio-political and cultural association, and the emergence of study club, which gave rise to Muslim intellectuals with secular educational background. Keywords: Muslim intellectuals, `ulama’> , Study Club, Ethical Policy. Introduction Research on ‘ulamā’ and Muslim intellectuals dates back to colonial times and is still of interest to scholars taking different approaches and extents. At the end of the nineteenth century, Christian Snouck Journal of Indonesian Islam; ISSN1978-6301 Published by the Institute for the Study of Religion and Society (LSAS) and the Postgraduate Program (PPs), the State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Sunan Ampel Surabaya - Indonesia Khoirun Niam Hurgronje1 did research on Indonesian pilgrims in Mecca, whom he referred to as jawah ‘ulamā’.

DEVELOPING IDENTITY: EXPLORING THE HISTORY OF INDONESIAN NATIONALISM A Thesis Presented by Thomas Joseph Butcher to The Faculty of the Graduate College of The University of Vermont In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Specializing in History May, 2021 Defense Date: March 26, 2021 Thesis Examination Committee: Erik Esselstrom, Ph.D., Advisor Thomas Borchert, Ph.D., Chairperson Dona Brown, Ph.D. Cynthia J. Forehand, Ph.D., Dean of the Graduate College Abstract This thesis examines the history of Indonesian nationalism over the course of the twentieth century. In this thesis, I argue that the country’s two main political leaders of the twentieth century, Presidents Sukarno (1945-1967) and Suharto (1967-1998) manipulated nationalist ideology to enhance and extend their executive powers. The thesis begins by looking at the ways that the nationalist movement originated during the final years of the Dutch East Indies colonial period.

  • “What's the Matter with Being Indonesian?”
“What’s the matter with being Indonesian?” A Social Representation Approach to Unravel Indonesian National Identity MSc Social Research Dissertation School of Social and Political Science 2012 – 2013 Exam Number: B029071 Word Count: 14.461 1 Acknowledgement I would like to thank my supervisor, Ross Bond, since this research could not be completed without his invaluable guidance and patience. I sincerely thank the Directorate General of Higher Education (DGHE) Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture for funding my education at the University of Edinburgh. Comments and feedback given by Rahkman Ardi, Reza Wattimena, and Charlotte Olcay have also been a tremendous help. I am also very grateful for the endless love and support given by my parents and brothers that kept me going. Finally, I would like to thank my friends and research participants who have been very helpful during this process. 2 Abstract Having announced its independence in 1945, Indonesia is still “a state in search of a nation.” Consisted of more than 300 ethnic tribes and around 600 local languages and dialects, ruthless religious, ethnic, ideology, region conflicts, and civil war have even been intensified after the New Order regime collapsed in 1998. By using Social Representation theory, online survey research involving 114 Indonesians living in the United Kingdom is used to explore these points; how Indonesian negotiate their ethnic, religious, and national identity, the historical theme and important figures in Indonesia’s history, and the connection between ethnic, religious, and national identity and attitudes towards the New Order. Research findings suggest that national and ethnic identity, as well as ethnic and religious identity, is consensual, while the relation between religious and national identity is emancipated.

Han Bing Siong Captain Huyer and the massive Japanese arms transfer in East Java in October 1945 In: Bijdragen tot de Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde 159 (2003), no: 2/3, Leiden, 291-350 This PDF-file was downloaded from http://www.kitlv-journals.nl Downloaded from Brill.com10/07/2021 03:57:08AM via free access HAN BING SIONG Captain Huyer and the massive Japanese arms transfer in East Java in October 1945 The interested layman surveying the historiography of Indonesia in the period immediately following the surrender of Japan will soon be struck by the obvious anti-Japanese bias of most Dutch historians (for examples see Han Bing Siong 1996,1998, 2000, and 2001b). Many of them interpret the part played by the Japanese in events in the post-surrender period negatively, as being antagonistic to the Dutch and supportive of the Indonesian cause. And where the Japanese did fight against the Indonesians and protected the Dutch, these authors often trivialize the Japanese actions and describe them as being too hesitant and ill-timed, as being inspired by concern for their own safety or by vindictiveness, or as following on direct orders from the Allied authorities. A few exceptions aside - such as the diaries or memoirs of H.E. Keizer-Heuzeveldt (1982:77), J. van Baal (1985:368, 1989:512), and G. Boissevain and L. van Empel (1991:305), and several other contemporary publications - there is a noticeable reluctance to acknowledge that Dutch people in some cases in fact owed their lives to the Japanese.1 This is curious, as many of these Dutch historians belong to a younger generation or have 1 According to Wehl (1948:41) the situation in Bandung especially was very dangerous for the Dutch.
