Mon. Aug. 11: Finance Council meeting, Fillmore, 6:00 pm followed by Parish Council meeting, at 7:00 pm Pope Francis appeals for peace in the Holy Land VATICAN RADIO: JULY 14, 2014 — Pope Francis on Sunday asked for prayers for peace in the Holy Land. Speaking after the Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope described his appeal as ―heartfelt‖ and said we must all continue to pray insistently for peace in the Holy Land in the light of the tragic events of the past days.

Fresh in mind – the Pope said - is the memory of the Vatican encounter on June 8th between the Patriarch Bartholomew, President Peres and President Abbas, during which an invocation for the gift of peace was pronounced and the call to break the cycle of hatred and violence was reflected upon.

Some may think – he continued - that that encounter took place in vain. But no! Prayer helps us – Francis said – not to be conquered by evil or to resign ourselves that violence and hatred may prevail over dialogue and reconciliation.

And Pope Francis exhorted all interested parties and all those with political responsibility, both on a local and on an international level not to spare their prayers, and not to spare all their efforts to achieve the cessation of all hostilities and the desired peace for the good of all.

And then the Pope invited everyone, first in silence, and then vocally, to join him in prayer:

“Lord help us! Give us your peace, teach us peace, guide us towards peace. Open our eyes and our hearts and give us the courage to say: “never again war!”: with war all is destroyed! Give us the courage to perform concrete gestures to build peace. Make us available to listen to the cries of our fellow citizens who ask us to transform our arms into instruments of peace, our fears into trust, our tension into forgiveness. Amen”.

Pope Francis’ appeal followed his weekly Angelus Prayer with the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square.

After having greeted those present, he reflected on the reading of the day according to which Jesus preached to great crowds along the shores of the lake of Galilee and spoke to them in parables of the sower who sowed his seed on different grounds where it did not thrive. But some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit. A well-known parable that speaks to us today – the Pope said – as it did to those who listened to Jesus 2000 years ago. It reminds us – he explained – that we are ground upon which the Lord tirelessly sows the seed of his Word and his love.

And he reminded us that we too are sowers and we must ask ourselves what kind of seed falls from our hearts and from our lips? Our words – Pope Francis said – can do good, but they can also do evil; they can heal and they can hurt; they can encourage and they can depress.

The Pope concluded his reflection pointing out that Our Lady teaches us, with her example, to receive the Word, to guard it and to make it yield fruit. TRI-PARISH DIRECTORY

VATICAN RADIO—JULY 14, 2014: The Vatican’s Secretary of State is in Mexico to discuss issues related to emigration, ―A huge challenge – ―he says – which is currently facing the entire human family‖. Cardinal Pietro Parolin arrived in Mexico City on Sunday to participate in a seminar entitled ―Colloquium Mexico-Holy See on International Migration and Development‖.

In an address today to the President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, Parolin emphasized the fact that the Vatican considers the issue of migration as an extremely important one, and appreciates the efforts made by Mexico, both at a national and at an international policy level. Parolin specifically mentioned the Mexican Reform that was ratified in 2011 and its underlying principles that uphold the rights of immigrants.

He said the Church supports policies which protect the dignity and rights of all migrants. And, from a pastoral point of view, Parolin expressed the Pope’s gratitude for the many initiatives the Mexican government has embraced in aid of migrants and in the effort to meet their needs.

The aim of the seminar is to find ways to coordinate a joint programm between the Mexican government and the Holy See, on the issue of migration. During the meeting participants will exchange ideas and identify areas of interest on issues related to international migration, social inclusion, human rights, respect for the dignity of migrants and the contribution of migration to the development of the countries of origin and destination.

Parolin’s schedule includes meetings with the Mexican Foreign Minister, with federal authorities and lawmakers, and with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.

The Vatican Secretary of State was invited by President Peña Nieto during his official visit to the Vatican last June. It is an occasion to continue working on a shared agenda, especially in multilateral fora, and to make the protection of individuals, their welfare and development into a core issue.

The seminar comes at a time during which the Mexican government is dealing with a humanitarian crisis which sees thousands of migrant children traveling alone to the United States.

All Central American countries are reportedly involved in this forced exodus, and the Catholic Church is in the forefront of the nation’s humanitarian response as almost all hostels for migrants in Mexico are run by Catholic organizations.

An official Mexican communiqué states that Mexico and the Holy See established diplomatic relations in 1992 and work in coordination on various issues of common interest, on the basis of mutual respect.

Ibrahim Case Reflects Deeper Problems in Sudan, Says Bishop: ‘There is no genuine freedom of religion and conscience in the country,’ Bishop Edward Kussala told Aid to the Church in Need.

CNA/EWTN NEWS: JULY 14, 2014: YAMBIO, Sudan — The ―disgraceful case‖ of Sudanese Christian Meriam Ibrahim is only one of many examples of discrimination and harassment faced by Christians in Sudan, a bishop in the region has said.

―Christians in Sudan can attend divine service unmolested, but there is no genuine freedom of religion and conscience in the country,‖ Bishop Edward Kussala told Aid to the Church in Need .

Bishop Kussala heads the Diocese of Tombura-Yambio in South Sudan, a Most Rev. Edward Kussala, country that became independent from its northern neighbor in 2011. The Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese region suffered a bloody civil war from 1983 to 2005. of Tombura-Yambio Ibrahim, who was born to a Muslim father but raised a Christian, was sentenced to death in May for alleged apostasy from Islam. She was also sentenced to flogging for adultery on the grounds that Sudanese law does not recognize her marriage to a Christian man. Ibrahim, who would not renounce her faith, gave birth to a baby girl in prison with her legs shackled.

She was released on appeal in late June, re-arrested while trying to leave the country, then released again. She and her husband are presently at the U.S. Embassy to Sudan, hoping to move to the U.S., where her husband is a citizen.

Bishop Kussala said that there are other religious-freedom problems in Sudan. Priests and bishops live ―as de facto illegals‖ and are barred from holding passports. ―They cannot leave the country and would likely be barred from returning, should they leave,‖ the bishop said. Some priests have been expelled from the country, and ―the bishops are condemned to remain silent,‖ he added.

About 3 million Christians live in Sudan. While they have the same constitutional rights as Muslims, these are not enforced equally, and the Sudanese government holds Christians responsible for the breakaway of South Sudan. Bishop Kussala said that the Church ―does not pursue any political aims. We only call upon politicians to respect freedom of religious faith and conscience.‖

Religious Freedom and Corruption Concerns In May, Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., suggested that the Sudanese’ government’s refusal to recognize religious freedom was a motivation for the region’s lengthy civil war. Smith is the chairman of the House Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health and Human Rights.

Sudan’s population is 97% Muslim, and the nation scored an 11 out of 100 in Transparency International’s "2013 Corruption Perceptions Index," ranking at 174 out of 177 among nations based on the perception of their public-sector corruption — ahead of only Afghanistan, North Korea and Somalia. Since 1999, the U.S. State Department has listed Sudan as a country of particular concern due to religious- freedom violations.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, which advises the U.S. government, said in its 2014 report that Sudan’s government ―continues to engage in systematic, ongoing and egregious violations of freedom of religion or belief.‖ The report noted that the country’s ―restrictive interpretation of shariah law‖ is imposed on both Muslims and non-Muslims.

Bishop Kussala called on Catholics, especially those in the West, to pray for their fellow Christians in Sudan. He also asked them to work to bring attention to their suffering and persecution to their lawmakers: ―Don’t let them remain invisible.‖ Save This Date!!!
