ALABAMABACK ROAD - DAY It's a sunny, winter day on a paved country in south/western Alabama. In the distance, peaking over a loping hill we see a faded metallic green, 1964 Buick Skylark with a white convertible top and New York plates. As it approaches, we see two young men in the car, both with dark hair and sunglasses. They look cool. ON THE ROAD ( The two-lane paved country road passes through huge fields of cotton plants - little shrubs with little, fluffy tufts of white. On the side of the road, every 100 yards or so, we see 8' X 8' X 20' trussed-up, squared-off bales of cotton covered with plastic tarps - waiting to be picked up and trucked off. Up ahead they approach a long bed truck filled with logs on the way to a sawmill -- this is also lumber country. They overtake the truck. They also pass a lot of things you see in the deep south that you don't see up north -- little, ramshackle fruit stands with weather-beaten signs saying "We accept food stamps," crude hand-lettered signs offering Vidalia onions, pecans, propane, bull• for sale, a cattle crossing sign -- a black silhouette of a cow on a round yellow background with a black border, grain silo• -- big and small.

Vincent Gambini and Mona Lisa Vito are back!By Kali the CatIf you loved the movie 'My Cousin Vinny' with Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei then this one is for you. Vincent (Vinny) Gambini and Mona Lisa Vito return to Brooklyn, NY after his successful win in the murder trial of his cousin Bill and Bill's friend Stan. Not sure what he's going to do to get cases his mentor Judge Molloy refers him to do arraignment work in Brooklyn's criminal court. Here he makes new court room friends that will have you laughing. On a referral a woman is sent to Vinny who thinks she's going to be arrested and charged with murder. Yes, another murder trial for Vinny. This is a funny and fast moving book. As others have said, while reading the dialog I couldn't help but seeing Vinny and Lisa talking. I also purchased the Audible copy of this but didn't like the narration because it wasn't done by Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei.

  • WHAT I LEARNED at the MOVIES ABOUT LEGAL ETHICS and PROFESSIONALISM by Anita Modak-Truran
WHAT I LEARNED AT THE MOVIES ABOUT LEGAL ETHICS AND PROFESSIONALISM By Anita Modak-Truran HOW I GOT HERE I’ve been fortunate. I practice law. I make movies. I write about both. I took up my pen and started writing a film column for The Clarion-Ledger, a Gannett-owned newspaper, back in the late 90s, when I moved from Chicago, Illinois, to Jackson, Mississippi. (It was like a Johnny Cash song… “Yeah, I’m going to Jackson. Look out Jackson Town….”) I then turned my pen to writing for The Jackson Free Press, an indie weekly newspaper, which provided me opportunities to write about indie films and interesting people. I threw down the pen, as well as stopped my public radio movie reviews and the television segment I had for an ABC affiliate, when I moved three years ago from Jackson to Nashville to head Butler Snow’s Entertainment and Media Industry Group. During my journey weaving law and film together in a non-linear direction with no particular destination, I lived in the state where a young lawyer in the 1980s worked 60 to 70 hours a week at a small town law practice, squeezing in time before going to the office and during courtroom recesses to work on his first novel. John Grisham writes that he would not have written his first book if he had not been a lawyer. “I never dreamed of being a writer. I wrote only after witnessing a trial.” See http://www.jgrisham.com/bio/ (last accessed January 24, 2016). My law partners at Butler Snow have stories about the old days when Mr.

And then it may perhaps happen that one fine day you will, with a peal of laughter, seen all metaphysical palliatives packing, metaphysics herself leading the great exodus. Nieztchel Comedy is a social phenomenon, a reflection, if not critique of the prevailing (or narrow-minded) beliefs of a given culture. It develops as a community outgrowth, a moment of light attack on the existing norms of a given population. Comedy finds its way into the smallest forms of human communication and expression, extending from tiny-witticisms or ill-mannered jokes to the full-blown parodies or comprehensive sat- ires of human existence often found long-form in the mediums of novels or films, or, in other words, through the outlets of pop culture itself. Comedy defines itself in relation to social categories 2; directed as an often derisive attack on the status quo, it situates itself as a disre- spectful observer of a given situation, society, culture, or even a partic- ular human behavior. While comedy consists of universal components attributable to many facets of human interaction and activity, its true thrust (and intended goal) depends on its ability to delve into a commu- * J.D., University of California at Los Angeles School of Law, 2001.

Unfortunately, on their way, they are mistakenly arrested in the state of Alabama for the murder of a convenience store clerk. They clearly did not do it, but there seems to be a large amount of evidence against them, and they could find themselves facing the death penalty if they don't have a very good lawyer. Unfortunately, they don't have a very good lawyer, but Bill is able to get his cousin Vinny to come to Alabama to represent them. It's Vinny's first murder trial.

  • 'My Cousin Vinny' Plays Big Role in Merrick Garland Opinion
'My Cousin Vinny' Plays Big Role in Merrick Garland Opinion Cross-examination drawing on lessons of My Cousin Vinnyhelped undermine a nursing home operator’s claimed reason for firing several union organizers, according to a federal appeals court. Chief U.S. Circuit Judge Merrick Garland—whose Supreme Court nomination failed after no vote was taken—wrote the March 5 opinion for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, report the National Law Journal and Above the Law. “In 1992, Vincent Gambini taught a master class in cross-examination,” Garland wrote, with a footnote to My Cousin Vinny. “Trial counsel for the National Labor Relations Board and the National Union of Healthcare Workers apparently paid attention.” Garland’s opinion upheld the NLRB determination that Novato Healthcare Center violated labor law by firing the workers. In the film and the case, Novato Healthcare Center v. National Labor Relations Board, cross- examination showed time estimates to be wrong. In My Cousin Vinny, the time lapse helped establish innocence in a murder. In Novato, the time lapse helped show that two employees sleeping on the night shift may have been snoozing only during their 10- minute break, as allowed by their employer. In the film, New York lawyer Vinny Gambini comes to a small Southern town to defend his cousin, Bill, who is wrongly accused of murdering a convenience store clerk. Vinny wanted to establish that Bill left the store long before the murder. Vinny, played by Joe Pesci, establishes during cross-examination that witness Sam Tipton was likely wrong when he said only five minutes had elapsed between the time that he saw Bill enter the store and the time he heard the gunshot.
