ALABAMABACK ROAD - DAY It's a sunny, winter day on a paved country in south/western Alabama. In the distance, peaking over a loping hill we see a faded metallic green, 1964 Buick Skylark with a white convertible top and New York plates. As it approaches, we see two young men in the car, both with dark hair and sunglasses. They look cool. CLOSE SHOT - RADIO A hand turns the dial in search of something contemporary - finding nothing but country music ••• RADIO (singing) If you can't live without me, then why aren't you dead ••• ? ••• and local ads with southern accents, farm reports, evangelists, gospel singers, and a woman with marital problems seeks guidance from a radio preacher. ON THE ROAD ( The two-lane paved country road passes through huge fields of cotton plants - little shrubs with little, fluffy tufts of white. On the side of the road, every 100 yards or so, we see 8' X 8' X 20' trussed-up, squared-off bales of cotton covered with plastic tarps - waiting to be picked up and trucked off. Up ahead they approach a long bed truck filled with logs on the way to a sawmill -- this is also lumber country. They overtake the truck. They also pass a lot of things you see in the deep south that you don't see up north -- little, ramshackle fruit stands with weather-beaten signs saying "We accept food stamps," crude hand-lettered signs offering Vidalia onions, pecans, propane, bull• for sale, a cattle crossing sign -- a black silhouette of a cow on a round yellow background with a black border, grain silo• -- big and small. -

Introduction While it is important that the Scottish Parliament continues to investigate and monitor the state of the creative and screen industries in Scotland, the time has surely come for action rather than continued deliberation(s) The time has surely come when we need to stop having endless working parties and spending money on consultants trying to work out what to do. Remember the ‘Yes Minister’ Law of Inverse Relevance ‘ ‘The less you intend to do about something, the more you have to keep talking about it ‘ ‘Yes Minister’ Episode 1: Open Government Therefore, please note that we already know what to do. That is: 1.1 - Appoint the right people with the vision leadership and energy to succeed. 1.2 - Provide a positive legislative/strategic/policy framework for support. 1.3 - Provide better budgets and funding for investment and/or leverage for the same. (You already have access to the data on existing funding for projects and programmes of all kinds. If the Scottish Government wishes to help to improve performance in the screen sector, there will need to be a step change in investment. There is widespread agreement that more is needed.) 1.4 Give them space to get on with it. That is what happened with the National Theatre of Scotland. This is what happened with MG Alba. Ms PRU GOWARD (Goulburn) [10.10 a.m.]: The Opposition does not oppose the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Amendment (Children's Employment) Bill 2009. The bill seeks to amend the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1988 and related legislation with respect to the employment of children. The amendments will extend the existing safeguards relating to the employment of children less than 15 years of age to children aged 15 years and over but less than 16 years and who, in particular, are employed as models. The amendments will include an increase in the maximum penalty for certain offences in relation to the employment of children from 10 penalty units, or $1,100, to 100 penalty units, or $11,000. A consequential amendment will also be made to the code of practice in the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection Child-Employment) Regulation 2005, which will include children between the ages of 15 to 16 years. It is useful to remember the background to this amendment bill. In 2008 Kirstie Clements, the editor of Vogue, called for a 14-year-old model to be pulled from the Australian Fashion Week. -

WHAT I LEARNED AT THE MOVIES ABOUT LEGAL ETHICS AND PROFESSIONALISM By Anita Modak-Truran HOW I GOT HERE I’ve been fortunate. I practice law. I make movies. I write about both. I took up my pen and started writing a film column for The Clarion-Ledger, a Gannett-owned newspaper, back in the late 90s, when I moved from Chicago, Illinois, to Jackson, Mississippi. (It was like a Johnny Cash song… “Yeah, I’m going to Jackson. Look out Jackson Town….”) I then turned my pen to writing for The Jackson Free Press, an indie weekly newspaper, which provided me opportunities to write about indie films and interesting people. I threw down the pen, as well as stopped my public radio movie reviews and the television segment I had for an ABC affiliate, when I moved three years ago from Jackson to Nashville to head Butler Snow’s Entertainment and Media Industry Group. During my journey weaving law and film together in a non-linear direction with no particular destination, I lived in the state where a young lawyer in the 1980s worked 60 to 70 hours a week at a small town law practice, squeezing in time before going to the office and during courtroom recesses to work on his first novel. John Grisham writes that he would not have written his first book if he had not been a lawyer. “I never dreamed of being a writer.
